IN REACH EXISTS TO ENHANCE THE LIVES OF CHILDREN, YOUNG PEOPLE, AND FAMILIES

We know that family life isn’t always easy and sometimes we

all need a bit of help, advice and support. We offer a range of

services to children, young people, parents and families to help

with a range of issues. We also work with many other agencies.

In Reach, is a Community Interest Company (CIC) based

in Wigan. As a CIC we invest all of our profits back into our

community. All profits and assets are used for the benefit of

families, particularly those who may be disadvantaged as a

result of social, health or educational issues. We promote strong

family to family community networks across Wigan and beyond

and actively promote the value of family in everything that we do.

WE bELIEVE IN ENHANCING THE LIVES OF CHILDREN, YOUNG PEOPLE AND FAMILIES bY WORkING ALONGSIDE LOCAL PEOPLE THROUGH COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES TO FIND LOCAL SOLUTIONS TO LOCALLY IDENTIFIED NEEDS.

WHAT ARE THEY?The Community Support Service is made up of specially

trained Community Ambassadors which is a sustainable,

cost effective and nationally recognised peer support

system, that enables parents to gain practical support from a

trained volunteer that lives within their local community. Our

volunteers are passionate about building on the strengths and

skills of other parents living in less advantaged or deprived

communities or may be socially isolated or particularly

vulnerable. Relationships are at the heart of our support and

are the key to the success of our Community Support Service.

Community Ambassadors are important intermediaries who

carry out a role midway between that of a professional and a

friend. They also assist parents to ‘take the first step’ towards

accessing other local services, preventing problems becoming

entrenched that are then difficult and costly to resolve. By

offering advocacy, informal support, useful information and

encouragement to other local parents they can reach those

who are wary of professionals, building bridges to help all

parents feel valued and supported.

WHO ARE THEY?Community Ambassadors are trained volunteers. They are parents from all walks of life who want to make a difference in their local community. Each Community Ambassador gives a number of hours each week to the family they are matched with to be a constant source of support, accountability and encouragement.

THEbENEFIT

COMMUNITY SUPPORT SERVICEFOR VOLUNTEERSMany of our volunteers often go on to further education,

employment or other hands-on roles within their community.

Typical personal changes we see are:

An increase in self-confidence and self-esteem

The importance of celebrating success

Improved knowledge of health, family well-being

and parenting

Many of our volunteers are also inspired to gain nationally

recognised qualifications and look at their time spent with the

family they support as a life changing experience. This not

only benefits the person that volunteers but also their own

family and people in their world.

FOR PARENTS AND FAMILIESParents benefiting the most are those facing higher levels of

disadvantage, deprivation and isolation. ‘Before’ and ‘after’

comparisons documented with parents that have had a

Community Ambassador be part of their lives, show in many

cases a dramatic, positive change in a wide range of health,

well-being and social issues.

Parents benefit by having an increased awareness of their

local community and services available to them. They also

gain increased self-confidence, self-esteem and develop

practical skills to make positive life choices for themselves

and their families. Often crime and anti-social behaviour,

social isolation and behavioural issues are reduced.*

THEbENEFIT

FOR WIGANBecause all of our Community Ambassadors live in Wigan,

they understand the complex culture that we live in. This

places our Community Ambassadors in a unique position to

build strong relationships with parents and families to address

some of the key issues that are affecting our communities.

We have seen a measured reduction in anti-social behaviour,

aggression and domestic violence and families not being

able to access support they need to move their lives forward.

In addition to this, families become more aware of their

impact on their community and through relationship with

their Community Ambassador begin to address key life

issues such as:

Lack of qualifications and English language skills

Unemployment (often a third and fourth generational standard)

Drug and alcohol misuse

Financial deprivation

Healthy eating and lifestyle changes

Emotional well-being both individually and as a family

Community Ambassadors impact almost every facet of the

parents lives that are gaining support through In Reach and

the wider benefit to Wigan can be seen in both financial, social

and visibly tangible ways such as:

Reduction in crime

Safer communities

Reduction in truancy with children in school

Reduction in unemployment

Development of behavioural and mental health issues

And many more*

It has been wonderful seeing katie progress over the last

6 months. She has gone from being deeply depressed

to being happy and enthusiastic about her job and

her plans for the future. She has started a weight

loss programme and is talking about the possibility of

returning to education.

PARENTING IN THE COMMUNITYPROGRAMSWHAT IS IT?Parenting In The Community is a series of parenting, social and

employability development programmes. Each course or workshop

is ran by an accredited facilitator with experience in adult learning

and developing long lasting change. Here are a number of our

programs specifically aimed at parents and young people.

TRIPLE P PROGRAMTriple P is a parenting program identified as cost effective in reducing

conduct disorder in children and young people. A robust

assessment process is carried out that will identify if an evidence-

based programmes is an appropriate intervention for the family

at that particular time. Group Triple P is offered to local families

experiencing difficulties with the child or teen behaviour.

Page 11: In Reach

THE bENEFIT OF TRIPLE PIncreasing parents competence in managing common behaviour problems & development issues

Reducing parents use of coercive & punitive methods of disciplining children

Improving parents communication about parenting issues

Reducing parenting stress associated with raising children

Supportive learning environment parents share and discus ideas and receive practical information

THE NURTURING PROGRAMThe Nurturing Program develops emotional and mental well-being

which are both crucial in sustaining effective relationships and

family life.

To lead satisfying lives, fulfil our potential, enjoy good physical and

mental health, play our part as citizens, sustain close relationships

and enjoy parenting our children, we need to be emotionally healthy.

This means, we need to be emotionally literate. We all have innate

emotional intelligence; but unhelpful childhood experiences make

it difficult for this intelligence to be developed - this is what The

Nurturing Program addresses.

The Triple P Group Program is

delivered over 9 weeks. Sessions are

weekly and will last for two hours.

Week one is a taster week.

The Nurturing Program is a 10 week program with sessions on a weekly basis and will last for two hours. Various session times are available.

IF NOT US -WHO?IF NOT NOW - WHEN?In Reach is an essential service for Wigan and the surrounding

areas. For too long, things have continued to get worse in

areas of the town and for the thousands of families stuck

in the trap of deprivation, lack of support and generational

thinking about what they are capable of doing with their lives.

Now is the time to make a change in the way we treat the root

causes of problems that have plagued many of our estates

and communities for decades – because if not us, who?

By being very specific in the way we are working in the

community, our whole approach is very results driven. We

exist to make a difference to the lives of children, young

people and their parents in Wigan – people who need help

and support, but also need to be shown a fresh way of

thinking about themselves and what they are able to achieve

with their lives.
