Meskerem Ayalew, CNA, was 11 years old when her parents moved their six daughters from Ethiopia to Virginia in search of better opportunities. Susan Lancaster worked as a licensed practical nurse for 20 years, helping cancer patients and long-term care residents, when she decided she would like to work in a hospital setting. Kim Dillard, RN II, cared for oncology patients at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital as a nursing assistant for 11 years, when their encouraging words became an inspiration.

Despite their differences in ages and backgrounds, the three had a common dream — to become a registered nurse. But they faced what at first seemed like an insurmountable hurdle: the ability to pay for the necessary education. With five sisters, Ayalew could not ask her parents for financial assistance; Lancaster and Dillard already were working full-time to help support their families. But the three women found that dreams do come true. Through their own hard work,

coupled with nursing scholarships offered through the Centra Foundation, Dillard earned her nursing diploma at Lynchburg General Hospital School of Nursing, and Ayalew and Lancaster will be awarded associate degrees in nursing in May from Centra’s new College of Nursing. The three are among the more than 100 students who have been awarded more than $202,000 in nursing scholarships since the year 2000. The scholarships help ease the financial burdens that discourage promising students from pursuing nursing degrees, according to Patti McCue, Sc.D., R.N., MSN, NEA-BC, senior vice president, Centra Patient Care Services. “The nursing profession continues to evolve quite rapidly with all the changing dynamics in the healthcare industry,” said McCue. “There will be new opportunities and practices opening up, especially in the ambulatory care setting. Our challenge is to make sure we have enough nurses and that they are educated in these new areas. “A lot of people have the passion, the drive and the academic capability to be very successful,” said McCue, “but the financial challenges often keep them from pursuing a degree in nursing. I can’t tell you how many times a nursing assistant or a licensed practical nurse at Centra has stopped me and said, ‘I would love to go back to nursing school, but I can’t afford it.’” Centra Foundation scholarships

afford people an opportunity they may not otherwise have because of current financial responsibilities. “Not only do the scholarships provide financial peace of mind, they give people another dose of confidence,” McCue added. “The scholarships mean, ‘there aren’t any more barriers in your way. You can do it.’” More than 20 students receive scholarships annually, according to Kathryn Pumphrey, Ed.D., CFRE, executive vice president of the Centra Foundation. “The scholarship fund helps students who otherwise could not attend the Centra College of Nursing without at least partial tuition support.”

Profiles in Nursing Scholarship recipients are students like Ayalew, 24, whose scholarship to the College of Nursing next semester will enable her to concentrate on her studies and not have to work. After leaving her job as a CNA in oncology at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital to help care for her ill aunt last summer and with her federal loans having ended, “I don’t know what I would have done if I hadn’t received the scholarship,” she said. “Centra helps you find a way,” she said. “The scholarship gives me the opportunity to finish my education and succeed in my dream of becoming a nurse. I love helping people and am so fortunate that I will be able to be there for people when they are most in need. “My plan is to pursue a bachelor of science degree in nursing after I earn my associate’s degree. I would love to be an emergency department nurse. My parents came here for better opportunities for

us, and that is a 100 percent possibility in this country. I’m living that possibility. In America, if you put in the time and you work hard, you can succeed.” Scholarship recipients are also people like Lancaster, who works every weekend and two evening shifts as an LPN and drives 1½ hours to and from her home in Bedford County in pursuit of her associate degree in nursing. “I have a very understanding husband,” she laughed. “It’s been beyond challenging to pay for all the prerequisites, and my scholarship has made all the difference in the world.” She received scholarship help for her final semester at Centra College of Nursing. She selected the Centra program because it was hospital based, and where she felt she would gain the most clinical experience. “The program has been fantastic,” she said. “The teachers are more than willing to help the students. They are a wealth of knowledge, and they really care about the students.” “I previously worked in a hospital setting, and would like to return,” said Lancaster, whose plan after graduation in May is to continue working and pay off her student debt, after which she

will pursue a bachelor of science degree in nursing. “I’m thankful to have the opportunity to do this.” And scholarship recipients are also people like Dillard, whose patients from when she was a nursing assistant in oncology “touched my life and encouraged me to further my education,” she said. “For years my job was perfect. Then I challenged myself, and the Centra Foundation helped me financially.” Dillard received scholarship assistance twice while she was enrolled at the Lynchburg General Hospital School of Nursing, prior to the opening of the Centra College of Nursing. She earned her nursing diploma in 2010. “I went to school Monday through Friday and worked two twelve-hour shifts at Centra every weekend for two years,” she said. “I also had a child and built a house during that time. I graduated debt-free. How wonderful is that! I could never have done it if it hadn’t been for the scholarships from the Centra Foundation. “The scholarships allow you the freedom to concentrate on your studies instead of worrying about getting a bill and having to work an extra shift to pay it,” she said. “I could go to work and go to school without stressing about the financial piece.” “I was the oldest one in my class,” said Dillard, 43. “I hadn’t done anything with computers since 1991, but the support was there for me. At Centra, you have support in every area—personal, financial and after graduation, it just continues.” Dillard has worked at Centra for 14 years and is considered a senior nurse because she was a nursing assistant for so many years. teaches clinical skills to nursing students and newly hired nursing assistants. “Someone took that extra time to show me these skills, and I want the students and the aides to see the tests like I did,” she said. Dillard sees education in her future. With a bachelor’s degree in sociology, a diploma in nursing and years of experience, she plans to pursue a master’s degree in education and apply to be an adjunct faculty member at the College of Nursing. “If it hadn’t been for the scholarships, I would still be an aide,” she said. “I never would have followed this career path. It wouldn’t have been an option for me.”

Dillard, Ayalew and Lancaster are representative of the nursing students who earn nursing degrees from Centra. “The profile of our students is different than that of other nursing schools in the area,” said McCue. “The majority of our students come from Lynchburg and the surrounding counties, and we tend to see older adults coming into nursing or those who choose nursing as a second career. These students may be funding their own children’s education, paying for childcare or being caregivers for parents. The scholarships make all the difference in the world because they pave the way for students to be able to pursue their career. “The associate degree in nursing is not just for older adults; it is attractive to anyone who wants to pursue a

nursing career who may not be able to

afford the time or the expense of four years of college.” The Centra College of Nursing offers a two-year associate degree in nursing (ADN) program, which prepares students with the technical proficiencies and competencies necessary for nurses to safely practice

in multiple settings. The college opened

its doors to its first class in August 2011 and awarded its first associate degrees in nursing in May 2013. Admission to the five-semester education program is twice per year, in August and January. In addition to attending classes at the Centra College of Nursing, students also may enroll at Centra Virginia Community College to complete general education credits. A wide variety of clinical experiences are provided at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital, Centra Virginia Baptist Hospital and other community agency sites. The college is accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools and is certified to operate by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia. The associate degree in nursing is provisionally approved by the Virginia

Fulfilling the Nursing Need

McCue noted that although it is not a requirement of the program, “It is very rewarding and exciting to have students graduate and work for Centra.” Graduates of the College of Nursing are prepared to engage in best practices, through critical thinking, interdisciplinary collaboration and building community relationships, said McCue. “Not only does an ADN degree mean better patient care in central Virginia, it makes it easier for graduates to pursue a bachelor of science degree in nursing,” she said. Changes in the landscape of healthcare means registered nurses will be in ever-increasing demand in the near future, noted McCue. With age 48 the average age of nurses in the United States, more than 50 percent of the nursing workforce is close to retirement. Recent reforms in healthcare have given millions of people access to the healthcare system, and more nurses and health professionals are needed. In addition, an aging population is projected to create a strain on healthcare across the country. “Much of the nursing shortage is geographical, and we are feeling fairly stable in central Virginia, for now,” said McCue. “However, even at Centra we are beginning to see more of our nurses retire. We believe the demand for nurses in central Virginia definitely will increase over the next two to three years. Some of that is a shift in where we need nurses. The ambulatory care sector

is rapidly growing, and there is a real need for nurse practitioners. “The majority of students who attend the College of Nursing have their roots in central Virginia, and they take great pride in that,” said McCue. “Very few of our graduates leave this area because this is their home, and they want to be part of the healthcare system that cares for their family, friends and neighbors.”

The Importance of Scholarships

The importance of nursing scholarships offered by the Centra Foundation to the College of Nursing cannot be understated. Not only do they help students pursue personal dreams, scholarships mean “Centra is doing its part to ensure we have enough nurses to provide necessary care,” said McCue. “Our students are afforded a quality education that prepares them very well to provide care to the people that we serve in our region.” The Centra Foundation offers a variety of scholarships, including a general nursing fund, scholarships for

minority nursing students and funds that help students from designated regions of central Virginia. “I would like to thank everyone who has supported our nursing scholarships since 1997,” said Pumphrey. “Our donors range from those who support these funds annually to those who support them periodically to people who attended our nursing school years ago who have made provisions for nursing education in their estate plans. “The gifts of these scholarships have made a tremendous difference in the lives of so many people, not only the students, but also our patients.” Both Pumphrey and McCue look to the future creation of an endowment, which would afford the Centra Foundation the ability to offer scholarships far into the future. “We often have patients who are touched in a special way by one nurse or all the nurses who cared for them,” said McCue. “It would be wonderful to have the opportunity to tell those patients that one of the best ways to honor and show their appreciation would be to make a donation to a nursing endowment of the Centra Foundation.” Pumphrey added, “An endowment would mean that the monetary aspects of attending nursing school would not be prohibitive to anyone who wanted to attend the College of Nursing. S. Preston Craighill III knows Centra

well. He grew up in Lynchburg, just

around the corner from some of the

people who are now providers for the

regional nonprofit healthcare system.

He’s received life-saving treatment at

its hospitals. The company of which he

was chief executive officer, C. L. Lewis

& Company, renovated or constructed

many of Centra’s buildings, including

the Centra Alan B. Pearson Regional

Cancer Center, the Rosemary & George

Dawson Inn and Centra Medical

Group Stroobants Cardiovascular

Center and has begun construction of

Centra’s new medical office building on

Nationwide Drive.

“I support the Centra Foundation

both personally and professionally.

During the years, we have built many

relationships,” said Craighill, who

is now co-owner and president of

Jamerson-Lewis Construction. In

January, C. L. Lewis & Company joined

forces with J. E. Jamerson & Sons to

form a new construction company

headquartered in Lynchburg.

“As a business, Centra treats its

suppliers fairly,” he said.“In addition, I

have a lot of respect for the hospital. As

a small community, we are fortunate

that Centra can attract such high

quality physicians. Centra is very

progressive. You can see this in its

state-of-the art cardiology and cancer

programs. So many Centra physicians

would be number one in their field

wherever they went.”

Craighill speaks from personal

experience. During an appendectomy,

a Centra pathologist found a goblet cell

carcinoid, a rare form of cancer.

“It is a very obscure type of

cancer,” Craighill said. “If the

pathologist hadn’t found it, I would

have been in a lot of trouble!”

“My family has a history of

prostate cancer,” continued Craighill,

who is 58. “After a PSA test, I was

sent to a urologist, and sure enough

I had prostate cancer. The surgery

performed with the DaVinci robot

was simply amazing. I spent one

night in the hospital and was walking

A year ago, Craighill had his

shoulder replaced. “My physician

told me people think they need to

go out-of-town. I can tell them from

experience that they don’t.

“It’s wonderful to have this kind

That was built because patients and

The Centra Foundation raised

$2.1 million in a capital campaign to

build the 20-room inn to meet the need

for overnight lodging close to Centra

hospitals and medical centers for

patients and their loved ones.

“The people at Centra work really

hard, and they sincerely care,” he said.

“Working with them and knowing

them has made me a better person.

They are not all about themselves. They

give back to our community.

“We are lucky to have such

fine medical professionals. They

have definitely prolonged my life.

Sometimes I’m my own worst enemy;

they are keeping me healthy.”

The integrity, values and

commitment to the community that

Craighill finds at Centra mirror those

of Jamerson-Lewis Construction, as

well as the company where Craighill

got his start in the construction

business, C. L. Lewis & Company.

Founded in 1929 on the brink of the

Great Depression, early achievements

for its founder, Charles Langhorne

Lewis, included the Lynchburg City

Armory. Over the past eight decades,

C. L. Lewis & Company expanded to

encompass all categories of commercial

construction.

Like Centra, Jamerson-Lewis

Construction is forward thinking. Old

construction techniques have evolved

to web-based project management,

building information modeling and

virtual estimating and scheduling. C. L.

Lewis built the first certified Leadership

in Energy and Environmental Design

(LEED) building in Lynchburg and

Jamerson-Lewis is building a similar

project for Centra. The company’s

hands-on approach during the

construction process is coupled with

its desire to build strong relationships

based on trust, integrity and respect.

Relationships are what matter

most to Craighill, who, with 37

years of experience with C. L. Lewis

& Company, worked in the field as

a laborer, carpenter and assistant

superintendent. At Jamerson-Lewis

Construction, Craighill works with

Phillip Jamerson, former co-owner

and president of J. E. Jamerson,

who is chief executive officer. Kevin

Hooper of C. L. Lewis and William

Cook of J. E. Jamerson have joined

Craighill and Jamerson as partners

in the new business. Robert P. Brown

Jr., Craighill’s partner at C. L. Lewis &

Company, retired at the end of 2013,

but continues to work several days

a week.

“I know the people on the boards

of Centra and the Centra Foundation,

and I know central Virginia will be

served in good ways,” said Craighill

who serves on the board of the YMCA

and has served on committees for

the City of Lynchburg and First

Presbyterian Church.

“Excellent healthcare and good

school systems attract people and

businesses from other areas,” he added.

“I’m sure we wouldn’t have some of the

firms we have here if we didn’t have a

first-rate medical community.

“You are not a number when

you are a patient at Centra. You are

a person,” Craighill said. “You know

what to expect, and that takes so much

of the worry out of it. Centra does

everything with a personal touch.”

A Alan B. Pearson has one goal in life — to help change the face of cancer care in central Virginia. He’s doing just that through his support of the Centra Foundation and the Centra Alan B. Pearson Regional Cancer Center. Although he points to extensive community support and will acknowledge only that he “got the ball rolling,” Pearson’s original $3 million donation to fund the cancer center followed by another $1 million in May of this year has ensured that residents of central Virginia receive the finest in cancer care. With the opening of the cancer center in 2008, a comprehensive array of services and state-of-the-art technology were conveniently united in a thoughtfully designed location where a multi-disciplinary team of medical and radiation oncologists, clinicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, patient navigators and social workers plan, coordinate and accompany patients on

a path of treatment. “I feel so good about it. Do we have a fine cancer center!” exclaimed Pearson. “It gives me pleasure every day. It helps so many people. We have some of the finest doctors anywhere. Great doctors attract great doctors, and that benefits patients. Having this cancer

center means you don’t have to go anywhere else for treatment. You can stay right here in central Virginia. The care is just incredible. “Plus, it’s just a marvelous building,” he said. “I don’t think anyone thought it would turn out like it is. People come from all over the country to look at it. When other cancer services come to look at your center, you know you are on your way. “I’m so pleased to be a part of the cancer center,” he said. “It’s really been a community effort. Anyone who has been treated here or has seen the building knows it’s just outstanding. The center is staffed by a great bunch of people, and they help others every day.” Pearson has been supporting cancer care through the Centra Foundation for the past decade. His generous donations have sponsored free PSA screenings for men since 2003. He also has contributed more than $100,000 to create scholarship funds

through the Centra Foundation for nursing students at the Centra College of Nursing. “I feel strongly about nurses and their importance to our community and our future,” he said. “We have a great nursing school here, and I’m hoping to continue that support in the future.”

“The foundation does so much for the residents of central Virginia,” said Pearson, whose combined donations are among the largest personal gifts ever made to the Centra Foundation. “The board members dedicate their time and expertise. I’m extremely impressed by how they work together for the good of our community.” In addition to his support for the Centra Foundation, Pearson’s generosity extends to the Jamerson Family YMCA, and he throws a holiday party every year for residents of a number of group homes in Lynchburg. “I have been very fortunate in life,” said Pearson, who with his brothers operated the Lynchburg drug store chain, Pearson’s, until it was sold in 2000. “I’ve got so much more that I want to do.”

The Centra Foundation held its annual Centra Society Donor Recognition event October 8 at Boonsboro Country Club. The event, which recognizes donors who give $1,000 or more to the Centra Foundation Annual Fund, is held each fall.

E.W. Tibbs Jr., president and CEO of Centra, and Kathryn Pumphrey, Ed.D., executive vice president of the Centra Foundation, welcomed members of the Centra Society and thanked donors for their ongoing support of the foundation’s mission. This year marked the Centra Foundation’s 20th anniversary, and the event featured a special presentation by Dilan Ellegala, M.D., medical director of Centra Neurosciences Institute.

Through their contributions to the Centra Foundation’s Annual Fund, Centra Society members have provided for our community by enabling Centra to offer more free community health education events, free health screenings, nursing scholarships and medical equipment. Funds also have been used to assist patients who are unable to afford their healthcare.

The next Centra Society event will take place in the fall of 2014. Donors who contribute $1,000 or more to the Annual Fund will be invited to this special event.

The Centra Neuroscience Institute Fund was established in 2013 to support patients with conditions affecting the brain, spine and peripheral nervous system. Previously, patients in central Virginia often had to travel out of the area to receive advanced neurological care. The primary purpose of this fund is to provide the best comprehensive neurologic care available to the community. IGHT OF HOPENFundraiser for the Cancer Patient Care Fund

and the Dawson Inn Fund

More than 150 people attended the Centra Foundation’s third annual Night of Hope fundraiser May 3 at the Centra Alan B. Pearson Regional Cancer Center. Funds raised from this event support the Cancer Patient Care Fund and the Dawson Inn Fund.

Alan B. Pearson, for whom the cancer center is named, made a surprise presentation at the event of $1 million to Centra President and CEO E. W. Tibbs Jr. in support of the cancer center and its patients.

Guests enjoyed music from Ryan Thomas and accompanying musicians while participating in a silent art auction. All artwork for the auction was donated by artists from central Virginia.

The Cancer Patient Care Fund was established in 2007 to support patients with cancer in central Virginia in a compassionate and comprehensive way. The fund provides support for prostheses, nutritional supplements, home medical devices and equipment, transitional medications, transportation to and from radiation and chemotherapy treatments, major capital equipment purchases and educational programs for both the staff and the community.

The Dawson Inn provides family-centered, home-like lodging and support services to patients and their family members who are receiving medical treatment far from their own communities. The Dawson Inn Fund was established recently to support patients and families of patients who are unable to afford a stay at the inn.

MRaising Awareness and

Funds for Mammograms

Vivian Pinn, M.D., former director of the Office of Research on Women’s Health at the National Institutes of Health, addressed more than 325 guests at the Centra Foundation’s 11th annual Mammograms Annually A Must (M.A.A.M.) luncheon October 11 at Lynchburg College. The event, which raised over $21,000, increases awareness of the importance of screening mammograms and provides funding for mammograms for women who cannot afford them.

While the luncheon supports the M.A.A.M. Fund and its mission, members of the M.A.A.M. Committee work throughout the year to raise awareness and serve the central Virginia community. In addition to the luncheon, the M.A.A.M. Committee participated in the four-mile walk associated with the Virginia 10 Miler. Volunteers cheered on the sidelines, walked in the race wearing pink shirts and distributed pink gloves for runners to wear to demonstrate their support of the M.A.A.M. Committee’s mission.

For the past three years, the Lynchburg Fire Department has demonstrated its support of M.A.A.M. through its “Live Fight Dream” T-shirt campaign since 2011. The Lynchburg Fire Department has donated more than $32,000 to the M.A.A.M. Fund from the proceeds of this campaign.

Many luncheon attendees and M.A.A.M. Committee members have been touched by breast cancer and want to make a difference in the health of our region. In 2013, M.A.A.M. sponsored 224 free mammograms and assisted patients with follow-up diagnostic mammograms and care.

HILDREN’S MIRACLE NETWORKHOSPITALS

CHelping Children in Our Community

Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals achieved several important goals in 2013, including the opening of the Center for Childbirth and Family Education in partnership with Centra Virginia Baptist Hospital. The center, which opened in March, offers classrooms for prenatal classes and the Centering Pregnancy program.

Another project completed in 2013 was a campaign to raise funds for equipment to airlift premature babies and infants less than six months old by the Centra One medical helicopter to Centra Lynchburg General Hospital. Ambulance transport to Danville, South Boston and Farmville can take two hours or more. The airlift reduces that time to as little as a half hour, which can mean more positive outcomes for the patient.

CMN Hospitals also raised funds to complete the child-friendly pediatric pod in the emergency department of Centra Lynchburg General Hospital. The pod, decorated with animal murals, has new equipment to treat children who are brought to the emergency department and can be found by following paw prints painted on the floor.

CMN Hospitals works with a number of business partners in central Virginia including Walmart, Sam’s Clubs, Food Lion, Dairy Queen, Credit Unions, IHOP, Ollie’s, Re/Max, Rite Aid, Long John Silver’s, Lone Star Steakhouse and Great Clips among others to raise funds during the year.

Fundraising events hosted by CMN Hospitals in 2013 included the Red, White and Blue Evening of Honors in March, which recognized local military and featured speaker retired Maj. Gen. Gale S. Pollock, and the annual Love of Children Ball, which raised funds for the equipment for the pediatric pod at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital. CMN Hospitals also sponsored the annual I Am Woman 5K Walk and Run in October, during which women of all ages braved cold weather conditions to race and raise funds for children.

Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals works for improved facilities and care for local babies and children hospitalized at Centra. CMN Hospitals thanks its supporters for helping to make miracles happen for the children of central Virginia.

OMMUNITYHEALTH FAIR

CCentra Foundation and Jamerson YMCA

The Centra Foundation partners with the Jamerson Family YMCA to sponsor a community health fair every year in February. This event includes free cholesterol, blood pressure and bone density screenings. A wide variety of service lines are represented at health information booths to address concerns including mental health, nutrition, cardiovascular care, orthopaedic care and rehabilitation and senior services. The mobile mammography van offers on-site digital screening mammograms.

This partnership with the Jamerson Family YMCA is not the only health fair sponsored by the Centra Foundation. Many other free events sponsored by the foundation offer residents of central Virginia access to health information and screenings to help them

discover and address health issues. The Centra Foundation sponsors community health education events on a variety of topics from atrial fibrillation to joint replacement.

The Centra Foundation’s 6th Employee, Physician and Volunteer Annual Fund Campaign raised more than $363,481 to support the Centra Foundation’s mission. Of the 1,968 employees who participated, many also donated their vacation time to support the campaign, Centra’s projects and programs and our community’s health. Gifts to the Annual Fund support: • Community health education and health screenings • Patients who cannot afford healthcare • Nursing scholarships • Buildings and equipment

Ten percent of the total amount given by employees and physicians support Centra’s Helping Hands Fund, which assists employees in times of acute, unexpected need. In 2013, more than $36,000 was transferred to the Helping Hands Fund for this purpose.

Those who give to the Annual Fund are honored on special recognition walls located at Centra Lynchburg Hospital, Centra Virginia Baptist Hospital and Centra Southside Community Hospital. Donors who contribute $1,000 or more annually are invited to attend the foundation’s annual Centra Society Donor Recognition event.

Eight Ways to Make a Bequest...And a Difference

Passing your assets through your will to the people and causes you care about is easy. Here are accepted ways to make a gift to Centra in your will, known as a bequest. For additional information on how to establish bequests, please contact your legal counsel.

Specific bequest. This is a gift of a specific item to a specific beneficiary. For example, “I gave my golf clubs to my nephew John.” If that specific property has been disposed of before death, the bequest fails and no claim can be made to any other property. (In other words, John wouldn’t receive the value of the golf clubs instead.)

General bequest. This is usually a gift of a stated sum of money. It will not fail, even if there is not sufficient cash to meet the bequest. For example, “I gave $50,000 to my daughter Mary.” If there is only $2,500 cash in the estate, other assets must be sold to meet the bequest.

Contingent bequest. This is a bequest made on the condition that a certain event must occur before distribution to the beneficiary. For example, “I gave $50,000 to my son Joe, provided he enrolls in college before age 21.” A contingent bequest is specific in name and fails if the condition is not met. (A contingent bequest is also appropriate if you want to name a secondary beneficiary, in case the primary beneficiary doesn’t survive you.)

Residuary bequest. This is a gift of all the “rest, residue and remainder” of your estate after all other bequests, debts and taxes have been paid. For example, say you have an estate worth $500,000, and you intend to give a child $50,000 by specific bequest and leave the balance of the residuary estate to your spouse.

Unrestricted bequest. This is a gift for Centra’s general purpose to be used at the discretion of Centra Foundation’s governing board. A gift like this – without conditions attached – is frequently the most useful, as it allows us to determine the wisest and most pressing need for the funds at the time of receipt.

Restricted bequest. This type of gift allows you to specify how the funds are to be used. Perhaps you have a special purpose or project in mind. If so, it’s best to consult the foundation when you make your will to be certain your intent can be carried out.

Honorary or memorial bequest. This is a gift given in honor or in memory of someone. Centra is pleased to honor your request and has many ways to grant appropriate recognition.

Endowed bequest. This bequest allows you to restrict the principal of your gift,requiring Centra to hold the funds permanently and use only a small percentage of the income the funds generate. Creating an endowment in this manner means that your gift can continue giving indefinitely.
