Since launching some of Phuket’s first affordable luxury pool-villas in 2003, the Two Villas Group has expanded exponentially with a flourish of trendy concepts and distinctly warm customer service and is widely recognised as a developer of vibrant communities with a conscience.

In just eight years, the Two Villas team of local architects has developed unique residential pool-villa projects at the rate of more than two per year, totalling 264 villas nestled in nice neighbourhoods around the island.

Named after the company’s first project of two pool villas to be designed and built by the team of architects, the Two Villas Group have since completed 18 residential projects in Phuket, all of which have been instant hits with local and international buyers investing in developments with a sense of community spirit.

As native Phuketians, the people in the Two Villas Group have a genuine concern for their island’s ecological welfare and her sustainability and their sensible tropical designs have spelled success.

Two Villas launched two new projects this year: Wings, which celebrates individual artistic expression with one-bedroom pool villas of modern Sino-architecture; and Saiyuan Estate, a vibrant community founded on environmentally-friendly principles.

Building Communities with Conscience

One of Two Villas’ most admirable traits is their after-sales service to make residents feel part of a friendly community, such as day trips with Phuket Heritage Tours, exploring little-known gems of Phuket’s past.

Wings is like an art collection of 28 secluded homes inspired by Phuket Old Town’s architectural heritage, offering sanctuary to the artistically inclined near Layan and Bangtao beaches on the east coast, ideally suited to trendy singles and couples.

Saiyuan Estate is a showcase of the Two Villas Group’s caring conscience and a marvellous example of the kind of harmony with nature that can be achieved. It’s a modern community of 19 homes built with “organic passion” – representing Two Villas’ transition into a caring developer that respects nature, taking care of the environment right from the start with chemical-free construction processes allowing residents to lead organic lifestyles.

The two distinct yet down-to-earth tropical home designs in Saiyuan estate, Onyx Essence and Oriental Essence, each

include innovative features for living harmonious and organic lifestyles, including organic kitchen gardens.

Renewable energy plays a significant role at Saiyuan Estate with every effort made to reduce impact on the environment with built in energy and water-saving devices.

Ultimately, Wings and Saiyuan Estate are wonderful examples of how all can benefit from a group of developers’ collective conscience by placing greater value on cultural identity and appreciation for nature.

Phuket is a well known international destination with a great mixture of cultural sites and interesting history which complements its fabulous natural beauty and famous beaches. It is not easy to see everything here in one trip, even though the island is relatively small. We recommend a visit to some of the following interesting museums as a guide for where to focus your other sightseeing.

Phuket Museums

Thalang National Museum After taking a photo of the Heroines Monument, you can move 200 metres along Paklok Road to Thalang National Museum. It has four main halls segmented by historical focus.

The main hall gathers stories about the civilisation of Thailand in general and the relationship of Thais and other ethnicities. The highlight of this hall is the Narai idol, which is considered the most complete in Thailand.

Moving into the next hall, you can discover information on the geology of Phuket. There are several boards which display details of iron ore mining in Phuket and the Andaman area, the archaeology of Phuket in the beginning eras, and some old containers and accessories. The movie ‘Pearl of the Andaman’ is also available for viewing here.

The next hall is where you can discover the heroism of Thao Thepkasattri and Thao Srisoonthorn, who protected the island from Burmese invaders in the age of King Rama I and are memorialised by the Heroines Monument. Some ancient weapons used in that war are also displayed here. The next hall focuses on the Chinese tribe known as the Hokkien, ancestors of the local Phuket population and leading developers of Phuket Island. Visitors will enjoy the human models with traditional costumes and the ancient house models.

The last hall contains information on the people and indigenous culture influenced by the Chinese and by Islam. There are also exhibits of local livelihoods in rubber plantations and fisheries around the Andaman shores.

Open: Daily except New Year’s Day and Songkran (13 – 15 April) Time: 9.00am - 4.00pm Tel: 076 313 397 and 076 311 426 Entrance fee applies

Seashell Museum Travel along Viset Road on the way to Rawai Beach and you will see a big, beautiful building housing the Phuket Seashell Museum on the right side. If visiting this museum, you will see more than 2,000 seashell species. The main highlight here is the left-handed Noble Volute and some other exclusive treasures from the sea like giant clams, 380-million-

Phuket AquariumOkay, it’s technically not a museum but the Phuket Aquarium is a learning centre and part of the Phuket Marine Biological Centre. Walking through this facility gives you the sense of being on a deep-sea voyage. There are more than 150 species of underwater life forms for you to meet on the journey. Stepping into the large, clear tunnel-tank makes you feel like you’re standing in an underwater world. Let those sea creatures swim above your head for a while: it is an impressive feeling you should not miss! At 11am on holidays and weekends, you will also see a feeding show in this tunnel presented by the aquarium authority. Please be sure you have enough time to say goodbye to the giant groupers waiting for you at the exit.

The Phuket Aquarium also has a Turtle Hatchery Hall, which is located 20 metres from the main aquarium building. This is worth visiting and no extra entrance fee is charged.

Open: DailyTime: 8.30am – 4.00pmTel: 076 391 126Entrance fee: 100 baht per adult and 50 baht per child

Phuket Thai Hua Museum Moving towards Phuket Town on Krabi Road, you will see a Sino-Portuguese house. Before it became a museum, it was the first Chinese Language School on the island. This museum provides knowledge about the history of the province and the nearby area. It gathers information about the beginning of and growth of the school, the first move of Hokkien (local Chinese population) heroes of Phuket and their interesting backgrounds. Additionally, there are details of culture including local traditional costume known as ‘Ya Ya’, festivals, Sino-Portuguese architecture and the economies on the past based on mining, rubber plantations and more recently the development of tourism. The main purpose of this museum is to preserve Phuket’s stories for future generations and all visitors.

Although you wouldn’t know it by the size of the clothes for sale, eating is practically a national pastime in Thailand and you will never have difficulty finding something new to try. Among the greatest adventures in the country is sampling the range, which is one of the most incredible in the world, with no less than 50,000 street vendors in the capital alone.

Street vendors can be found virtually everywhere in Thailand, from the busy market areas to small town alleyways or in front of simple village homes. The customer base ranges from the poorest day worker to the richest Bangkok business people, and of course, plenty of foreign tourists. Some vendors carve out quite a reputation for themselves with superior fare drawing in crowds all day. Many restaurant owners actually started out as street vendors. With everything from noodles to skewered meats and exotic desserts on display – you are sure to find an impressive array of dining choices.

‘Somtam’ is an all-time favourite of Thai people and foreign visitors alike. This green papaya salad is zesty and spicy, and also very healthy. It’s freshly made right in front of you and goes well with sticky rice and grilled chicken. Sometimes

Delights of Thai Street Food

fermented crab is added to this dish and unless your stomach is pretty strong, you should give that a miss.

In the movie ‘There’s Something About Mary’, the lead characters mention that there are not enough meats on a stick. Well, clearly they’ve never been to Thailand. You can find all sorts of grilled meats on a stick – pork, chicken, fish, squid or beef – just about anything. And for the vegetarians there’s even grilled tofu on a stick. The most famous meat on a stick is satay, with the meat being lightly dusted in turmeric powder and served with delicious peanut sauce and vinegary cucumber salad.

Noodles make for a filling street treat if you need more than just a skewer of meat. Various noodle dishes are sold by vendors, ranging from simple soups to hearty ‘pad Thai’. Don’t forget to try ‘raad na’ (noodles in a thick gravy) and ‘pad see- ew’(dry flat noodles fried with soy sauce). ‘Kanom jeen’ is a favourite noodle dish eaten for breakfast, and ‘baa mee’ is a delicious egg noodle soup. ‘Khao soi’ is a yellow curry noodle dish you can easily find in the North of Thailand. Most of the time, there will be a few little tables and chairs out around noodle stalls where customers can eat, and drinks are usually available as well.

If you need something a bit heartier try the ‘khao man gai’ or chicken served with rice that has been cooked in broth. Many vendors also sell fish which has been crusted in salt and grilled. Peeling back the salty skin reveals the moist flesh that goes well with the chilli sauce provided.

Fried bananas are a delicious snack that can be enjoyed any time of day. Thick slices of banana are battered and deep fried in oil. Eat too many of these and you will have a hard time getting into your swimsuit though! Sticky rice with mango is another popular street food. The sticky rice is doused with sweet coconut milk and goes very well with the ripe mango. You can also find bamboo which has been stuffed with sticky rice and banana or other tasty ingredients.

Insects are delicious to dine on as well, usually fried until they’re crispy. Try the ‘chik goong’, or large crickets. High in protein and low in fat, they are a great snack if you manage to get past the appearance.

‘Kanom krok’ is one of the best street foods; this is suitable for breakfast and snacking. These are little coconut milk hotcakes grilled in small round moulds. It’s just 10 baht for 8 or 10 of them, depending on where you get them from.

There are also plenty of vendors selling soft drinks, coffee, sweet drinks, and sliced fruit. Sometimes vendors go mobile and you’ll see them moving all over town, especially if they are selling something like drinks or fruit. Don’t forget to try the homemade ice cream – served in a bread bun! Thai desserts like bananas in coconut milk or black jelly on ice are also refreshing on a hot day.

The types of food sold by street vendors vary in different regions of Thailand and eating at their stalls will give you a good sampling of local cuisine. For example, you might find a lot of Halal food in predominantly Muslim areas of the South, or some very exotic hill tribe desserts in the North.

Not all street food will agree with Western stomachs, and you should keep a few tips in mind when eating a la food cart. Try to look for popular vendors, ones with a line of customers. Their food is likely to be fresh and clean – as those who make the locals sick don’t stay in business for long. Don’t try to eat anything too spicy or anything that you are unsure of, and also be aware of the hygiene of the person preparing the food. Keep an eye out for if and how they keep insects off the food. When in doubt, only eat food that is cooked thoroughly and served hot.

Kitchen PlusFor the month before our big holiday season begins, let us suggest a restaurant for you to dine an authentic and exotic Thai cuisine, which you can enjoy with your family, friends or your loved ones. Kitchen Plus offers a nice and relaxing atmosphere, providing you both an air-conditioned dining room and an alfresco dining area.

Since its opening two years ago, Kitchen Plus has been well known among locals and tourists, as one of the best places to experience authentic Thai food, with no compromise on spiciness.

The restaurant serves a wide variety of Thai specials, along side international dishes, amidst a chic and luxury setting - a Tong Loh style which is mostly seen in the Sukhumvit area of Bangkok.

Some of the restaurant’s recommended dishes are;

Peek Gai Nom Sod or Deep Fried Seasoned Chicken Wings with Fresh Milk. Choosing this for your starter will never let you down as the dish is delicate, delicious and rarely found elsewhere.

Stir-Fried Tiger Prawn in Tamarind Sauce, fresh large tiger prawns served with a sweet and sour tamarind sauce and fried onions.

Spaghetti Laab Moo or Ground Pork Salad with Spaghetti, a perfect match between two world favourites, Italian for the Spaghetti and Thai for the popular Isaan dish Laab Moo. With its well balanced taste of sour, salty, and hot Laab Moo adds an interesting aspect to an Italian classic.

Hongkong Noodle Moo Hong, tender thin noodles fried with egg and served with Phuket style braised pork, in a sweet and dark soya sauce.

Khao Pad Nam Prik Goong Hor Kai Jiew Cha-om. The dish is a creative combination of spicy delicacies. Fried rice mixed with prawn chilli paste and served in a deep fried acacia egg wrap. This dish has a flavour that strongly represents the typical Thai palate and you should never miss out on a chance to try it. To give you a hint of what your bill will look like at the end, this dish is only 90 Baht.

Khao Pad Maeo Meaw is another must try dish. Fried rice with Mackerel adorned with a pyramid of green shallot, served hot with an Isaan style Jaew Dip.

Kitchen Plus is located at the first floor of HomePro Village, Chalong. Open daily 11.00 am – 9.30 pm. Enjoy live Bossa Nova music every Friday, Saturday, & Sunday nights. To celebrate their success and their third year of business, they will soon introduce “Tablespoon” – an expansion to the second floor. According to the plan, it will be ready to serve customers later this month. Tablespoon will focus on salads and steaks, traditional and some with a Thai twist.

in Phuket, October 2011What to Do

I can hardly find the words to describe this amazing island. Beyond the fabulous natural beauty, wonderful art and culture, Phuket is also a heaven for everyone who loves shopping, especially if you are able to make your stay here over a Saturday or Sunday night – when you’ll have the chance to explore the magnificent weekend market

Chao Fah Variety Weekend MarketThe concept of this weekend market is the same as other weekend markets in Thailand. Starting from the Asian economic crisis in 1997, when people lost their jobs and brought their clothes, belongings and house wares to sell from car boots, the tradition of the weekend market has carried on. In Thai, they are called Talad Thai Rod. Nowadays, these markets have become very popular and items sold have increased in variety and have extended beyond second-hand products.

Originally, the weekend market was located near the Phuket Bus Station. Now it has moved opposite the Naka Temple. If you are driving from Central Festival towards the Chalong Temple, turn left at the first traffic lights, go straight for around 500 metres, and the market is on your right, covering on area of around 13 rai.

There are hundreds of stalls under hundreds of continuous awnings. Under those roofs, there are mostly clothing stalls. Principally, they are local designs

and often in Thai sizes (small when compared with Western sizes). Overall, pricing here is not expensive and this is the main attraction for the crowds of local people who flock here. Various kinds of ornaments, from different parts of Thailand, are also available here. They are usually popular souvenirs for visitors to take back home.

Food stalls are numerous. Indigenous Phuketian style food, fruits, snacks, drinks and even some special dishes like fried insects are found at another side of the area. Many of Phuket’s well known food shops come here to open a small branch to offer visitors convenience during their great shopping experience.

The area in the back, adjacent to the parking area, is a small wonderland to please kids. Bouncy castles are available for their fun while parents can chill out at one of the bars with some refreshments.

This is a market that allows you to practice your bargaining skills as prices are not fixed and are controlled by the seller. Keep trying for some discounts (of course in a nice manner) as you know Thai people are very kind, especially when you ask them in Thai! This is a trick to increase the possibility of a discount (I cannot guarantee the result).

You may be concerned about the communication between foreigners and sellers here as this is considered a local market and targeted towards local

Note: This weekend market operates every Saturday & Sunday; starting from around 5pm. Products differ according to the changes in trend and season.

Department Stores in Phuket Phuket also provides many choices of well known department stores and of course, there are some local souvenirs and ample food awaiting shoppers.

• Central Festival Phuket: Located on Wichitsongkram Road in Phuket Town. Just at the corner opposite to the giant Thai restaurant, Thai Nan.

• Jungceylon: A modern shopping centre located in Patong, providing full shopping facilities.

• Big C Supercenter: Located near Central Festival Phuket on the Bypass Road.

• Tesco Lotus: From Big C Supercenter, drive 1 kilometre further towards Sarasin Bridge on the Bypass Road. It’s on the right.

• And if you drive for about 5 minutes more, you will reach the new shopping mall named Premium Outlet where you will find some brand-name products at discounted prices.

• HomePro Village: Located near Chalong circle.

• There are two other choices on Tilok-U-Thit 1 Road in Phuket Town, which are Ocean Department Store and Robinson.

people. Relax though, as language is not a big barrier on this

international island. Most of the sellers can speak English and sometimes a calculator is the best tool to finalize the deal.
