Unleashing new possibilities with LED 5Proessional LED lighting catalogue 20124
What are LEDs? How do LEDs work? What’s so dierent? An LED is an light emitting diode. Its light is produced by
an electrical current passing through a s emi conductive
material, so it does not require a lament like an
incandescent bulb.
LEDs have advanced at remarkable rates to enable an
entirely new category o lighting that will bring sense
and simplicity to our everyday lighting. LED lighting is
highly ecient, long lasting, environmentally riendly and
inherently controllable - enabling both new and traditional
applications o light. Already LED based solutions
illuminate amous buildings, bridges, retail shops, television
studios, theatre stages, hotels, casinos, hospitals, restaurants
and celebrity-lled nightclubs around the world.
LEDs produce light in a very unique way; they produce light
via a process called electro-luminescence, a rather complex
process that starts by turning a s emi conductor material into a
conducting material. A semiconductor with extra electrons is
called N-type (negative) material, since it has extra negatively-
charged electrons. In N-type material, ree electrons can move
rom a negatively-charged area to a positively charged area.
A semiconductor with extra holes is called P-type (positive)
material since it has extra positively-charged gaps called holes.
When excited with current the negative electron leaves its
atom and the P-type material’s positive attraction draws the
ree negative electron into its hole, and the hole also moves
toward the electron, so on and so orth. As an electron travels
to a hole, it carries energy, but in order to t into the hole it
must release any extra energy, and when it does, the extra
energy is released in the orm o light. When we maintain a
steady fow o electrical current to the diode, it continues
the process o allowing electrons to fow rom the negative
charged material and all into the positive charged holes which
maintains a steady stream o light out o the LED.
LEDs consume less electric power. An LED bulb utilizes around
10 watts o energy that is conrmed to be 10 times less
energy consuming than an incandescent bulb, which utilizes
up to 100 watts o electricity. The lengthy hours o usage and
energy-saving unctions o LEDs will denitely support you
to save more when compared with continually buying other
inexpensive light bulbs that have shorter lie span and have no
energy-saving unctions.
Durability is another eature o LED lighting. They don’t have
glass tubes that may break and trigger injury. They are made
o materials that do not generate toxic chemicals like that
o incandescent and also fuorescent bulbs. Lastly, LED lights
generate pure light which has no ficker and causes no glare.

Sustainability and LED
solutionsSustainability and respect or the environment are core
values o Philips. With LED based solutions, we take a major
step orward in achieving both aims. When considering the
sustainability o LEDs, the rst aspect that generally springs to
mind is low energy use . Apart rom this, there are plenty o
other benets, including waste reduction, recyclability, ecient
use o materials and resources and the eect on buildings and
design practices.

Unleashing new possibilities with LED 11Proessional LED lighting catalogue 20120
1. Like all light sources, LED sources slowly ade over time. This light
output degradation, or lumen depreciation, is determined by testing
LED sources over a period o 6,000 hours or more. Factors that can
cause lumen depreciation include drive current and heat generated
within the device itsel. Lumen maintenance describes how long a
ighting xture retains a certain percentage o its initial light output.
White light sources used or general illumination are commonly
considered to be at the end o their useul lie when their light output
alls below 70% o the initial output. For white and colored accent andnon-task lighting, the lumen maintenance threshold is oten considered
to be 50%. Well-designed LED lighting xtures can retain 70% o their
nitial output or 50,000 hours or more, depending on operating
conditions and other actors. At 24 hours per day o continuous use,
such xtures can deliver useul light or six years or longer — many
times as long as incandescent sources, and up to t wice as long as long-
ie fuorescent sources.
2. I you compare the raw lumen output o conventional lamps with
the lumen output o many LED lighting xtures, it oten seems that
LED xtures deliver less light than the conventional alternatives. Such
comparisons, however, are inaccurate and misleading, as they ail to
account or the signicant amount o wasted light in conventional
lighting solutions. Simply put, lumen output is a poor measure o the
suitability o a lighting xture or a given task. A better measure is
delivered light — how much light a xture delivers to a surace or
area, as measured in lux (lx) or ootcandles (c). You can make accurate
comparisons between conventional and LED lighting xtures on the
basis o delivered light, as it measures how much o a light source’s
raw lumen output reaches a surace or area you want to illuminate.
To determine how much o a conventional lamp’s raw lumen output
reaches a task area, you must discount any light lost in the xturehousing (oten over 30%), as well as any light lost as a result o lensing,
shading, and ltering. Since incandescent and fuorescent lamps emit
light in all directions, you must urther discount any light emitted in a
direction away rom the target area.
LED lighting xtures are integrated systems in which t he light
sources (LEDs), the xture housing, and the primary optics are
inseparable. Lumen measurements o LED lighting xtures, thereore,
are perormed on the entire system, and already account or light
lost to the xt ure housing and lensing. Furthermore, since LEDs are
inherently directional, they emit almost all o their light outp ut in the
desired direction, rather than dispersing it in all directions. And since
LEDs natively produce intensely saturated colored light, they require
no gels or lters which can block a signicant percentage o a xture’s
light output (over 90% or certain shades o deep blue).
When comparing lighting xtures on the basis o delivered light, LED
xtures oten perorm as well, and in some cases signicantly bett er,
than conventional xtures, while consuming ar less energy.
3. Many manuacturers test their LED chips on lab benches at room
temperature with short pulses that produce a high ecacy that cannot
be achieved in practical use . While these results are not incorrect, they
do not refect the typical expected output o LED sources integrated
into lighting xtures. Although percentages vary, it is not uncommon tosee ecacy losses o up to 40%. Reputable LED xture manuacturers
do not base lumen measurements on the test results o their LED
source suppliers. Instead, they use independent, third-party testing labs
to measure and validate the output o their lighting xtures according
to test conditions spelled out in the LM-79 standard, published in 2008
by the Illuminating Engineering Society o North America (IES). Some
highly ecient white-light LED lighting xtures can achieve ecacy o
over 40 lumens pe r watt (lm / W), sucient to earn ENERGY STAR
and other energy-eciency ratings. For example, linear LED cove
lights rom a leading manuacturer achieve ecacies o 43.9 to 53.1 lm
/ W in normal operating conditions.
4. Because o incandescent light bulbs, you’re probably used to looking
at wattage to determine the light output o a light source: a 100-
watt lamp puts out more light than a 60-watt lamp. The act is that
incandescent lamps have a very low ecacy compared with CFLs,
high-output fuorescent lamps, and LED light sources. All general
service incandescent lamps use the same lament material heated
to the same temperature, the only way to increase the ir light output
is to increase the wattage. This is one o the main reasons why
incandescent lamps are so energy wasteul. LED sources are much
more ecient at converting watts to lumens. Dierent materialscan be used within the LED sources themselves, each o which has
its own light ext raction ecacy. For these and other reasons, two
dierent LED sources can consume the same number o watts but
dier widely in lumen output. Because watts can’t be used as an index
o light output, evaluating the “brightness” o LED sources or a given
situation requires you to think dierently about lighting. A standard
60-watt incandescent lamp emits a total o about 800 lumens, but the
light is emitted e qually in all directions. When you’re reading at your
oce desk, your book does not receive all 800 lumens rom your
desktop lamp, nor do you need it to. As described in Myth #2, the
crucial measurement is delivered light. According to t he IES, serious
reading requires an average o 50 c or 500 lx on t he page. Many
linear LED under-cabinet xtures and other task lights can deliver this
level o light while consuming ar less than 60 watts. For example, an
Choosing the right LED solutionAvoiding common misconceptions about LED sources and xtures
under-cabinet LED light rom a leading supplier delivers 50 c in typical
desktop situations while consuming only about 6 watts per oot.
5. Because they produce no inrared energy, the beam o light rom
an LED source is cool. However, waste heat is produced within the
LED itsel during the conversion o electricity into light. This waste
heat must be properly removed rom the lighting system to maximize
xture perormance and to avoid damage to the LEDs. In well
designed LED lighting xtures, heat removal is accomplished through
careully designed and engineered heat sinks that draw heat away rom
the LEDs and dissipate it into the air surrounding the xture housing.
6. Initial xture costs may be higher or some LED lighting solutions
than or comparable incandescent and fuorescent lighting solutions.
But initial xture cost does not account or the total cost o owning,
operating, and maintaining a lighting system. Because o their long
useul lie, LED lighting xtures avoid the maintenance and materials
costs which multiple relampings o incandescent xtures require over
tens o thousands o hours o operation. And because LEDs consume
ar less energy, annual power costs can be reduced by up to 80%. The
total cost o LED lighting systems, thereore, can be signicantly lower
than conventional systems. In act, payback on LED lighting solutions
can oten be realized in less than three years.
7. Two important measurements o white light quality are correlated
color temperature (CCT) and color rendering index (CRI). CCT
describes whether white light appears warm (reddish), neutral,
or cool (bluish). The standard denitions o CCT allow a range o
variation in color that can be readily discerned by viewers even when
the CCT value is the same. Ensuring color consistency, thereore,
is a major concern o LED manuacturers. Leading LED lighting
manuacturers use various LED selection schemes (binning) to ensure
color consistency rom xture to xture. On a scale o 0 (worst) to
100 (best), CRI measures the ability o a light source to reproduce
the colors o objects aithully in reerence to an ideal light source
— the sun, or example, or an incandescent lamp. Most oce, retail,
educational, medical, and residential spaces require a minimum CRI o
70 – 90. Many white-light LED lighting xtures available today achieve
CRIs o 80 or better, comparable to many CFL lamps, quartz metal
halide lamps, and some cool white fuorescent xtures sucient or
the vast majority o applications. Because o well-known shortcomings
o the standard CRI test or LED lighting, some LED lighting xtures
with low CRI scores produce visually pleasing light that renders colors
appropriately. Color Quality Scale (CQS), a color-rendering standard
that better accounts or the unique properties o LED light sources, is
currently under development. Until CQS or a similar alternative is in
place, you should observe LED sources with low CRI scores in pe rson
to evaluate how well they render color.
Ecacy o LED sources
• LED sources far surpass incandescent lamps in efcacy and compare favorably with most uorescent lamps.
• Highest efcacy in reds and coolest whites — 5000K and above.
Comparing LED and conventional light xture e cacy
This table shows the st arting ecacy o various xtures, percentage o light loss, and net ecacy
The LED downlight has the lowest starting ecacy, but its net ecacy exceeds the asymmetric linear fuorescent and
equals the CFL downlight.

Committed to India or over 109 years, Citi takes pride in being a premier locally-embedded nancial
institution backed by an unmatched global network. Citi’s presence in India spans 42 Citibank branches
across 30 cities, over 700 ATMs and is an employer o choice to approximately 7500 employees in
India. With capital investment o around US$4 billion, Citi is the single largest oreign direct investor in
the nancial services industry in India and oers consumers and institutions a broad range o nancial
products and services, including consumer banking and credit, corporate and investment banking, securities
brokerage, private banking (Citi Private Bank), alternate investments and private equity (CVCI) and wealth
management. In line with our commitment to make a positive dierence in the communities we work, Citi
India’ citizenship programme is ocused in t he priority areas o nancial capability and asset building, micro-
nance, enterprise development and youth, education and livelihoods.
The solutionTo gauge the complexity and the nature o the issue Philips carried out a survey o the lighting levels.
Ater analyzing the inormation the ollowing solutions were proposed to the Citi team:-
• Realignment of the light ttings would improve the efciency of the lights used in the ofce. For example:
shiting light ttings above rows o back-to-back work-stations, so only a single row o lights was adequate.
• There was a scope to reduce over-all ttings at workstation areas, cabins and passages.
• The gap between downlighters installed at passage area was increased from existing 4’ to 6’.
The recommendations were accepted by Citibank. Philips installed Sereno 2’x2’ fttings and Ledo
downlighters. The results were highly eective. They were able to reduce the number o 2’x2’ light ttings
by 24 %( 78 t o 59) and also reduce the number o downlighters by 27 nos. Overall average illumination level
on workstations improved rom 200 lux to 430 lux (expected to stabilize in the range o 375 – 400 lux in
6 months time).Technically, the new lights are approx 100% more ecient than the old ttings. Due to the
high-eciency and long-lie o the product, in addition to energy saving, maintenance cost is ex pected to be
negligible or the next 2 years.

network o oces in 26 count ries to provide holistic, multi-service delivery in key industry verticals. Saving
energy is one o t he prime areas o corporate social responsibility that HCL believes in and practices
diligently. For there new campus at Manesar, they wanted a lighting partner who can provide products which
are energy ecient and oer lowest possible light power density.
The SolutionPhilips proposed a combination o LED and T5 based lighting solution based on client’s requirement. LED
lighting oers a solution that is fexible, energy-ecient, easy-to-upgrade and maintain. We installed Sereno

including outdoor areas, so that we are able to save lot o energy or achieving LEED certifcation. For
achieving this we were looking or a lighting partner and got the answer in Philips. Basically, we have used

Bio-PlanetLeuven, Belgium
“With the green supermarket concept, Philips ts in seamlessly
with Bio-Planet’s green philosophy. It is a clever selection o
environmentally riendly and cost-eective lighting solutions,
as well as being customer-riendly.”- Tamara de Ridder, Marketing Manager Bio-Planet
The project Bio-Planet is an appropriate name or Belgium’s greenest supermarket. The Colruyt Group stores are
known or their extensive selection o organic and green products, but their environmental awareness
doesn’t stop there. Opening a new branch in Leuven gave them the perect opportunity to speciy the
most durable and energy saving materials.
In this endeavour Bio-Planet was not alone, says Tamara de Ridder, the supermarket chain’s Marketing
Manager. “Philips developed a customized Green Supermarket lighting concept, a clever selection o
environmentally riendly and cost-eective lighting solutions attuned to the various sections o the
supermarket.” The attractive properties o t he light turned out to be an added bonus: products were
illuminated in a more attractive way and looked resh or longer. Bio-Planet really stands out rom the
crowd in a eld where competition is important.
The solutionBio-Planet’s customer sees the eect o the green supermarket concept all around when shopping. At
the entrance LuxSpace downlights tted with phosphor LEDs create an inviting ambiance. Compared to
the usual energy saving lamps, 50% more energy is saved and they have a 50,000 hour liespan. The same
combination o attractive illuminations with energy saving and low maintenance costs was the aim or the
entire store. The total energy saving or the current lighting is 25%. In addition, ingenious applications o
LED technology eed the imagination. For example, at the resh ood counter Fugato FM Fortimo Food
LED downlights make meat cuts look really natural. In the cooling cabinets Fortimo LED Food Modules
provide a ull light spectrum without UV radiation, which prevents product discolouration and keeps the
products resh. The bakery department was tte d with adjustable spotlights with champagne colored LED
light. The bread products are also attractively illuminated and because o t he minimal heat generation the
products remain resh or longer. The use o the robust, waterproo Pacic LED armature in the ruit and
vegetable department highlights Bio-Planet’s innovative approach. Apart rom their economical and ecient
illumination, LEDs also benet rom higher light output in colder areas.

Fussl FashionVienna, Austria
“Fussl Fashion is not just a byword or high-quality clothing, but
also or social and environmental responsibility. For us, a long-
term approach is important when we think and act. Installing
Philips’ innovative LED systems proves this.”- Ernst Mayr, one o the managing directors o Fussl Fashion
The projectFussl Fashion specializes in ashion or men, women and children, rom exclusive labels to internationally
renowned brands. The rapidly growing company currently has 115 branches throughout Austria and
anticipates 2010 sales o over 100 million euros. But Fussl’s nger is not only on the ashion pulse. The rm
also takes its environmental protection responsibilities seriously.
The tough environmental challenge is to be saving 1000 tonnes o CO 2 per year in the near uture. For thisreason, throughout the new 645 m2 branch in Shopping City Süd in Vösendor (Vienna), they planned to
install a LED lighting system that would pay or itsel within 5 years at most. A lighting concept would show
o the color and quality o the garments in every part o t he sales area. It also had to be low maintenance
and provide a high light level o 1000 lux, which was standard in nearby ashion boutiques.
The solution155 Latina LED compact lights illuminate the general area in Fussl’s new fagship store in one o Europe’s
largest shopping centres. The attractive downlights are supported by 26 innovative DayZone lights. Their
warm, non-glare light with color temperatures of 3000 K make a great impression. Thanks to the circular
light’s beam – the lamp itsel is angular – the DayZones signicantly improve the ambience and are eective
in preventing any tunnel effect. The garments are highlighted with compact StyliD spots 25 W (3000 K and
4000 K). 100 swivelling StyliD recessed luminaires were installed in the entrance area, 110 swivelling StyliD
semi-recessed luminaires are positioned in the walls, and 75 StyliD power-track spots were put in the
display area and the store. Because o the modern accent lighting system the space looks much wider and
deeper. Herbert Gadermayr, CEO o Gadermeier, the electrical installation company: “With these innovative
Philips LED systems, we have achieved an ideal lighting system with e xcellent color reproduction, that also
meets Fussl Fashion’s environmental requirements.”
Compared with halogen lighting, the fagship store now realizes a signicant drop in CO2 emissions and a
long-term all in energy costs. As a result o the long 15 year ser vice lie, operating and maintenance costs
will also all substantially. Thanks to the relaxed atmosphere the shopper eels at home and is able to clearlysee the color and te xture o each garment. The sta nd the new lighting ar more pleasant particularly due
to the reduced glare level and the low level o heat generation. For these reasons, the new lighting concept
has successully been introduced in many other branches o Fussl Fashion.

Heineken The City Amsterdam, The Netherlands
“LED lighting is innovative, oers a great many new possibilities and
really suits the ‘look and eel’ we wish to convey. Furthermore, by
tting the entire shop with LED lighting we are 100% distinctive
rom everyone else.”- Marc van der Mijn, Store Manager Heineken brand store
The projectClose to the Rembrandtplein in Amsterdam there is a unique st ore where you can experience the
Heineken brand in a spectacular way: Heineken The City. Spread over the our areas o music, ashion, travel
and events and a beer shop (beer-related products), the visitor is oered a range o possibilities. From
booking tickets or events, the purchase o exclusive clothing and bags to designing your own beer bottles,
Heineken literally brings its mission o ‘serving the planet’ to lie here.
The solutionIn the hyper-modern equipped retail store architecture, technology and LED lighting fow together in
harmony. Whereas the LED lighting sometimes supports the architecture, it oten demands a dominant
role itsel. LED string has been used in this way or supportive (He ineken) green accent lighting in the coves
above the wall urniture. And the cool white light o the LEDline² is appropriately ever-present in the lie-
size decorative rerigerators containing beer bot tles. Warm white light provides an intimate atmosphere
in the recording studio. From the mirror wall which comes to lie wonderully thanks t o ‘LED pixel’
backlighting, the Spot LED or the lighting o Heineken gadgets, to the resh spotlighting o the LEDline² or
the walls and either side o t he entrance; LED lighting is applied rereshingly and unctionally throughout.
The benefts
“Our visitors are oten bowled over by the store’s ambience.
The lighting certainly contributes to that eect. LED lighting has a clear added value compared to other
lights,” says van der Mijn. “It creates a real atmosphere, while at the same time providing good light.
Furthermore, LED lighting has a very low energy consumption, which is even more attractive with so many
light sources.” A urther advantage is the long liecycle o the bulbs. “The Spot LED has been used in some
‘inaccessible’ places. Fortunately we don’t have to replace them very oten.”

Case study
“Thanks to foodlighting and other lights using LED, colors and
details can now really be seen. Even the bullet holes in the
acade, which only older Rotterdammers knew were still there,
are visible again.”- Marco de Boer, Primo Exposures
The projectAt the moment, the Coolsingel in Rotterdam is going through a complete metamorphosis thanks to the
implementation o a new lighting plan, and the illumination o the City Hall is also currently being worked
on. The stunning architecture and history o th e building are now shown in their ull glory once again.
Rotterdam City Hall was completed in 1920 and surprisingly it survived the bombing raids o 14 May
1940. Aside rom the ground foor, there are three storeys and an attic and the building also has a clock
tower which is more t han 70 metres high. Rotterdam’s citizens are proud o their city hall, but accordingto Marco de Boer o Primo Exposures, there was a large discrepancy between this pride and the building’s
illumination, which is why he took care o the nal design and installation o the new lighting. “The town hall
was illuminated at night by sodium lights and their yellow light made the acade look completely fat. We’ve
now illuminated the building in such a way that justice is done to its ne architecture.”
The solutionLEDline² was installed along the edge o the majestic roo. The clear white light, enriched with a small
amount o blue, emphasizes the blue-grey hue o the slate roo. The stepped gable has also be en tted with
LEDline2, supported by our Profood light xtures, two o which are aimed at the statue at the centre. The
two narrow windows at the sides o the main entrance are magically illuminated. “We achieved this eect
by using the most modern Profood light xtures, tted to two posts opposite the building. This is a rst
or the Netherlands,” says Marco de Boer. The ten statues along the acade are each lit by t wo to our LED
modules and in addition another LEDline2 light xture was placed in a recess in the corner tower, behind
the large statue o Johan van Oldenbarneveld. This brings the statue into the oreground even more. Marco
de Boer has received many positive reactions to his project. Thanks, amongst other things, to foodlighting
with LED lights, the building’s colors and details can now really be seen. Even the bullet holes in the acade,
which only older Rotterdammers knew were there, are visible again.

“ The bulb in a foodlight lasts three years on average, while an
LEDline lasts 25 years. This makes one thing cer tain: Vilvoorde
will get enjoyment out o its light concept or a very long time”- Christophe Thomas, Lighting Designer or Outdoor Lighting Belgium and Luxembourg
The project
Background
The Flemish town o Vilvoorde has recently gained a prestigious light installation with its renovated town
hall, thanks to warm white light rom surace illumination created by foodlights, and cool light rom
vertically arranged LED foodlights – city beautication at its very be st.
The Challenge
“This was a very important project, not only technically, but also regarding Philips’ image. This is why we
created a model, not only to demonstrate the natural transition to t he end product, but also to create a
connection by making our design tangible. And despite the act that our concept was considerably more
expensive than that o our biggest competitor, mayor Jean-Luc Dehaene was very happy to team up with
us,” says Christophe Thomas, Lighting Designer or Outdoor Lighting Belgium and Luxembourg.
The solutionThomas’ light design stands out through its simplicity: there aren’t too many rills, but rather a meticulous
blend o warmth and austerity. There are reasons or this: “The town hall is an old building with a classic
appearance, which means the lighting plan has to be kept simple, while also highlighting the right areas and
being easy to maintain.” Thanks to the subtle light combination rom foodlights and LEDlines, this has been
a great success. “In total we used our dierent light varieties: DecoFlood, Mini DecoFlood, Pompeï and
LEDlines. The latter product illuminates t he vertical lines o the building in p articular, but without being
dominating. The cool white light rom the LEDlines, contrasted with the warmer light rom the foodlights,
creates a distinct tone or the overall concept, especially in combination with the town hall’s blue bricks.”
Because the LEDlines have been mounted at a great height and are e xactly as wide as the columns they
illuminate, they can barely be seen.
The benefts
What’s possibly even more important is that they will last a very long time. Thomas: “The bulb in a foodlight
lasts three years on average, whilst an LEDline lasts 25 years. This makes one thing certain: Vilvoorde will get
enjoyment out o its light concept or a very long time.”

municipalcorporation -LED street lightingWest Bengal, India
“Philips Lighting partnered with Kolkata Municipal Corporation
and the Climate Group to help municipal corporations understand
practical ways in which they could make substantial cuts in urban
emissions and savings on energy rom street lighting.”- Aditi Dass, The Climate Group
The projectThe Climate Group is an independent, not-or-prot organization working internationally with government
and business leaders to advance smart policies and technologies to cut global emissions and accelerate
a clean industrial revolution. Its global coalition o companies, states, regions and cities around the world
recognizes the economic and environmental imperatives o taking decisive actions now. The Climate Group
is working with the world’s most infuential business and government leaders to make clean technologies
commercially viable.
The group wanted to take up the very new technology - LED lighting which consumes about 40-50% less
energy than the conventional sodium vapor lamps. This reduction o 40-50% goes up to as high as 70-80% i
the LEDs are controlled by smart adaptive controls.
The solutionPhilips Lighting partnered with Kolkata Municipal Corporation and the Climate Group to help municipal
corporations understand practical ways in which they could make substantial cuts in urban emissions and
save on energy from street lighting. In Kolkata, the group has retrotted around 300 street lights with
Philips Roadstar LED streetlights.

Royal mail NDCDaventry, UK
“ The highly energy-ecient LED technology delivers huge energy
savings, reduces CO2
consumption and minimizes maintenance costs
without any compromise on light quality.”- Saurabh Talwar, Regional Key Account Manager (North) – Industry Segment, Philips Lighting India
The ProjectPhilips in partnership with Romec - BBTS overhauled the lighting system at Royal Mail’s National
Distribution Centre in Daventry through the use o cutting-edge LED technology. The collaboration
provided Royal Mail with a bespoke LED lighting scheme that was sensitive to the operational needs
o the building, making sure the working environment or sta was enhanced by the lighting installation,
delivering the benets o LED technology, without compromising on light quality. The North Hamptonshire
based 30 acre delivery depot employs over 700 people, and handles letters and parcels or over 60 mail
centres accounting for 40% of the UK’s daily mail.
The SolutionAt the centre o the lighting scheme was GentleSpace, a new LED high-bay luminaire, which is built
around the LEDGine LED platorm, meaning it is upgradeable and uture proo. GentleSpace met all the
requirements set by Royal Mail, as it is able to achieve higher lighting levels, but with the added benets o
using ewer lighting points, which means reduced costs and lower energy consumption. Energy savings were
an important additional element to this scheme as customers in industrial and warehousing applications are
constantly looking or ways to reduce the amount o energy required to light their acilities. GentleSpace is
the rst LED high-bay luminaire that can directly replace HID high-bays o up to 400W, enabling signicant
energy savings. With this new lighting scheme Royal Mail can expect energy savings o £9,000 per year
energy, which is the equivalent o 61,712kg o CO2.

BPTilburg, The Netherlands
“ Low energy consumption is impor tant, and so is a sense
o security. But the most important actor is the customer
experience. Customers should experience the shop as a
pleasant environment to stay in. This has been made possible,
thanks to Philips.”- Tamara de Ridder, Marketing Manager Bio-Planet
The project Joost van Aardenne talks about the complete renovation of the BP petrol station at the Kempenbaan West
in Tilburg. “We had a unique opportunity to give the station a complete acelit. We wanted to signicantly
improve the customer experience - but not at the cost o the environment. Another priority was to reduce
the station’s energy consumption.” The ultimate goal was clear: within six and a hal weeks, the new BP
signboard and Wild Bean Caé had to be up and running. The entire project is to s erve as a pilot project or
the rest o The Netherlands.
The solution“Philips Lighting has supported us by sharing their e xpertise and experience in lighting. That is how we
ended up with the LED concept. This is the rst petrol station illuminated entirely by LED lighting,” adds
a proud Joost van Aardenne. “LED oers all kinds o possibilities. It does not need time to warm up, it
consumes little energy, and it has a longer lie span.” Spotlighting certain elements gives customers greater
ocus. And the intensity o the light is varied to create a pleasant atmosphere in the Wild Bean Caé, while
giving the products in the rerigerated section stronger and more appealing visibility. LED lighting also
provides signicant advantages outside the shop. “The awning lights dim when there are no cust omers and
brighten when a customer drives up. This not only results in tremendous cost savings, but also gives
customers a greater sens e o saety,” according to Joost van Aardenne.

Scandic PalaceCopenhagen, Denmark
The projectConsideration or the architecture and the original atmosphere o the hot el was one o the major
challenges. Managing Hotel director Pia Jakobsen: “It was crucial that the new lighting matched the spirit
o the hotel. Through generations, the Scandic Palace has settled in the minds o the guests, a act that we
do not want to put at risk. At the same time, we aim to become swan-labelled, and being a member o the
Scandic chain since spring 2009 has naturally also caused us to comply with the environmental policy o
Scandic, which was ormulated as early as 1994. It has been a dicult balancing act.” Another challenge was
the wish or the return o the investment t o be measurable t hrough concrete results. Pia Jakobsen: “We
have set clear objectives, both short term and long term, or reunding and reducing energy consumption,
because it is obviously important or us to reduce our CO2
emissions.”
The solutionScandic Palace Hotel has drawn up a plan or the new lighting in collaboration with Philips. Technical
manager Jan Brink-Pedersen reports: “Luckily, the development o LED lighting has speeded up so much
in recent years that the quality now is top-notch. For example, in terms o color, where we have chosen
through-going, warm lighting, which is in accordance with t he nuances and light sources that were intended
or the hotel.” As a result, the majority o the 4390 light sources in the classic hotel in Copenhagen are LED
products. “The low heat generation rom the LED lighting is undoubtedly going to lead to less demand or
air-conditioning,”says Jan Brink-Pedersen.

The Westin Palaceadrid, Spain
Case study
The ProjectThe Westin Palace Madrid volunteered to be a pilot hotel and test the new bulbs generation rom Philips.
The process started by an audit rom Philips in October 2008. Jerome Lienaert, Manager Six Sigma Black
Belt accepted to lead this project. The new bulbs were rst t ested in rooms, on the foors and in the
banquet corridors, with nobody noticing any dierence in quality or warmth o the lighting between the
conventional and the energy saving bulbs. On top the new bulbs were very aesthetic. The lie time o a bulb
varies between 3.000 and 8.000 hours and calculations showed a return on investment o 10 months.
The back o the house (BOH) is currently being renovated and this new project also includes the Philips
new generation bulbs. The initial project saves 741 804 Kwh per year which represents 7.9% of 2008 total
consumption. This represents savings o 67.000€ on electricity. It also represents an impressive 318 975 k
annual reduction on CO2 emissions or the equivalent o 15 949 trees.
The Spanish government economically motivates such investments and i the study is accepted, the Westin
Palace will be able to claim around 4% o the total project cost or an ex tra 3 800€. Finally Philips was so
pleased with the outcome o the study and our decision to buy the bulbs that they will sponsor the lighting
o the dome (value 7.000€) and use the Westin Palace Madrid in their advertising. In addition, since Spain
has eliminated the monopoly o the electricity supplier we ollowed the project o the Westin Valencia and
hired the expertise o Evolutia or an annual ee o only 900€. They made recommendations or where we
could buy our energy rom. Since July 1st 2009 we decided to buy our electricity rom a pool o suppliers
and have since then saved 28 737€ in cost o electricity. We calculate that by the end o t he year on top o
the investment o low energy bu lbs we will save another 7% by buying electricity more eciently.

County HallLondon, UK
The projectSitting on London’s Southbank, once the headquarters o local government or London, County Hall is,
perhaps, better known or its tourist attractions, businesses and hotels, which have made their home within
this grand architectural space.
The solutionArchitainment Lighting Ltd installed a st ate-o-the-art LED lighting solution. Oering exceptional lighting
projection o up to 500 eet, Philips ground breaking ColorReach™ Powercore technology has ensured that
County Hall is now as much o an iconic landmark on London’s Southbank by night as it is by day.
With LED development moving ever orward, the project took ull advantage o the latest introduction
o Philips ColorReach™ Powercore and the benets it oered ensuring its 2 main objectives were
ullled. The rst o these was that the illumination o the building should allow County Hall to become adistinctive and attractive landmark on the night time scene as well as providing a sense o cohesion with
other attractions along this popular stretch o the river. Secondly, the lighting solution should be fexible
enough to accommodate the requirements o corporate clients who hire out the area or their own events.
The thinking here being that the lighting could be changed to refect the brand colors o the individual
companies involved. ColorReach™ Powercore is the rst LED architectural foodlight which is powerul
enough to illuminate large-scale structures having more lumen output than any other comparable xture
or exterior illumination. Indeed, it oers over 5,000 lumens over an unprecedented light projection o over
500 eet. As Peter Castelton, Managing Director o Metropolitan Estates explains, “Having seen what Philips
ColorReach™ Powercore was capable o at the initial trial we were completely convinced that this was
the right solution or us. We have certainly not seen anything that can beat its fexibility, superb projection
capability and excellent precision control. What is more is that it provides saturated color output at
signicantly less cost or installation, operation and maintenance as compared to traditional light sources –
and in today’s current economic climate these cost elements simply cannot be ignored.”

GatesheadMillennium BridgeNewcastle, UK
Philips has supplied a state-o-the-art LED lighting solution at
Gateshead’s world amous Millennium Bridge. This truly unique
piece o engineering is now complemented by ground breaking
ColorReach™ Powercore technology.
The projectAcclaimed as the world’s rst and only tilting bridge the LED lighting solution supplied is in itsel a
revolutionary development in LED technology. When Gateshead council decided that the time had arrived
to update the existing lighting system it was an ideal opportunity t o put orward Philips ColourReach™. It’s
the rst LED architectural foodlight which is powerul enough to illuminate large-scale structures having
more lumen output than any other comparable xture or exterior illumination.
The solutionIndeed, ColorReach™ oers exceptional light projection o up to 5,000 lumens over 500 eet providing
color mixing eects through both static and dynamic color changing sequences. In this instance, the
ColorReach™ modules also oered an energy saving opportunity operating at 290 W at ull output
compared to the 700 W traditional foodlights they replaced.
Simple and easy to use the system is programmed to run rom sunset through to 1 a.m. each evening. To
create these s tunning eects, a total o 8 RGB LED ColorReach™ Powercore luminaires were installed, all
incorporating a fexible selection o beam angles allowing diering combinations o dynamic displays to be
produced. These were run via an DMX controller using astronomically triggered timelines as well as real
time special events.
Potential also exists, or example, to use one beam on the module’s lower hal to bathe the vertical plane
with color at deck level whilst utilizing a dierent beam angle to project a contrasting or complementary
color hundreds o eet up at t he top o the bridge arch. In addition, two remote touch screens have been
installed to allow bridge sta to take manual control o the syst em or last minute special requests or
specic color requirements.
Without doubt, the additional dynamic fexibility oered by ColourReach™ will urther add to its multi
award winning status as a major national and international tourist attraction.

PUB department storeewcastle, UK
“Lighting plays a signicant role in the project, balancing the
historical roots with a modern, constantly changing content.
“The dome breathes light!”- Kai Piippo, Lighting designer, Proessional Member o PLDA
The projectThe project was to re-design PUB, the oldest department st ore in Sweden. Formerly a rather anonymous
city galleria, PUB is changing into a modern department store ocused on ashion or a young, urban,
internationally orientated target group.
The lighting design concept or the cupola aimed to emphasize its role as a natural cen tre point o the
department store. The architectural design allowed or an interesting play with light, shape and movement.
The elegantly lit dome is the visual centre piece o PUB, Stockholm’s oldest department store. The upper
level space is intended to ser ve as a natural gathering point, and thereore the dome’s lighting scheme was
designed to draw customers up rom the store’s lower foors.
The designers sought to create a dynamic atmosphere where customers would experience various scenes
during their visit, and Philips intelligent LED lighting proved the ideal choice or bringing their concept to lie.
During the day, ten dierent lighting scenes create a variable ambiance in the space. For example, customers
visiting in the morning are treated to a teen-minute sunrise scene, incorporating warm colors and smooth
movements to align with the human biorhythm. In the aternoon, the pulse o the store quickens; the colors
become more vivid and the dynamics more playul and experimental.
The solutionBy changing the colors, the intensities and the speed o the dynamics o the 500 RGB LED light ttings that
are hidden in the construction, the cupola transorms into a living element that breathes light.

Asian paints,experience color storeMumbai, India
“We eel we’ve created something engaging and inspiring that
has redened not only perceptions o Asian Paints in the
market, but the Indian retail landscape in general”- KBS Anand, President o Decorative Business, Asian Paints
The projectHome décor in India is handled almost entirely by contractors. Consumers have little involvement in home
decor and do not use much color in their homes. The challenge o Asian Paints color store project was to
design a fagship store that would inspire consumers to do more with color. For example, the entrance o
the store is highlighted with hundreds o lights sus pended in an arch, inviting guests to choose a color rom
a series o pedestals. Motion sensors hidden within pedestals send a pulse o the select ed color up through
the archway lights and across the acade, creating constant color shits through the whole store-ront.
The rst Experience Color Store opene d in Mumbai in 2009 and has already won a couple o design awards
in the region:
- Best International Retail Interior, Retail Interior Awards 2008
- Best Manuacturer’s Showroom, Best Innovative Concept, Best in Class or International Store Design,

- Visual Technology in a Visual Display, VMSD International Visual Competition 2009
- Silver IDEA, IDSA IDEA 2009
- A.R.E. Award 2009
The SolutionPhilips Color Kinetics - iColor Flex SLX are embedded into the suspended disks in the entrance. Using red,
blue and green LEDs motion sensors with light system manager creates constant color shits th roughout
the whole store-ront.

“Practise what you preach. I you are going to promote
sustainable business then you really ought to make sure the
lighting is an ‘illuminating example’ as well.”- Thomas Schuurmans, New business developer at Reggs
The projectReggs, a design agency in Amsterdam, translates design and communication into brand strategies and
eective ‘carriers’, such as products, packaging and corporate identity. Reggs does this on the basis o its own
unique vision. ‘Creating added value through sustainability’ is the slogan Reggs uses to convince clients that
sustainable business really is possible.
Schuurmans explains: “We wanted to use light to create a cosy, riendly atmosphere whilst at the same time
retaining the industrial character o the space. Echoing the unctional grid o actory lamps t hat used to hang
here, we chose to install a grid o lamps that are reminiscent o t he archetypal incandescent lamp.”
The design agency is located in the production hall o what used to be a bubble-gum actory. The studio has a
foor space o 750 m2 and is 8 m high. Schuurmans explains: “We wanted to use light to create a cosy, riendly
atmosphere whilst at the same time retaining the industrial character o the space. Echoing the unctional
grid o actory lamps that used to hang here, we chose to install a grid o lamps that are reminiscent o the
archetypal incandescent lamp.”
The solutionInitial research into the possibilities showed that the Philips MASTER LED would be the most suitable. “It
has the amiliar shape o an incandescent lamp, but thanks to t he LED technology it is very energy-ecient,”
says Schuurmans. “The lamp produces light that is bright white yet personal at the same time – this ties in
nicely with the creative atmosphere in the space. The bold design with cooling ribs ts in beautiully with
the industrial ‘look and eel’ o this environment.” Various calculations to determine the light output showed
that a total o 216 lamps would be required to light the space eectively. These have been installed in a
ne-meshed grid below the ceiling. “Because they are all at exactly the same height, as dusk alls it looks
as i there is a se cond, transparent ceiling between the foor and the ceiling, and this creates a riendlier
atmosphere in the large actory hall.”
