The Italian Renaissance was a time of flowering ideas, emerging practices, and a resurgence of learning – a renewal of the human mind and spirit. What better theme for this year's AAEA conference than that?

We want to take a look at art education past along side the newest educational strategies and pedagogies and create something beautiful. Our conference will be a time to revisit our own practices and renew ourselves as educators as we develop new relationships and become immersed in the world of art ed today. Please make sure to join us in the gorgeous Sedona for AAEA's Renaissance and Renewal, November 2013.

In the meantime, In Perspective is looking for submissions from our members. If you have a fabulous lesson plan, advocacy piece, or success story in the classroom, please submit! We look forward to hearing from you!

We are now in our Arizona spring – things are heating up. And that’s a good analogy for art education too. Things are heating up – the molecules of our lives are spinning faster and faster. Are you feeling it? It’s easy to get stuck in the day to day of our lives. For those of us that attended the Fall Conference “ArtEduCon: Transform” in Tucson – we got UNSTUCK! So many new ideas. So many energizing conversations. So many connections being established and opportunities opening up. For those of us that attended Nationals, “Drawing Community Connections” recently in Fort Worth Texas, we have gotten another kick of energy and ideas and recharging. Nationals will be in San Diego next year, so start planning now for the last week in March 2014 for your spring professional development.

But next fall plan to attend our own outstanding Arizona art education professional development, “Renaissance & Renewal” in beautiful Sedona. Arizona Art Education Association is a group of dedicated art educators that are going above and beyond their own classrooms and their fast spinning lives to work together on projects that serve us all – like professional development. Next year’s fall conference planning is heating up. Read more about it in this newsletter, and look for more information to be coming your way from now until our opening Thursday evening on November 21. Our conference offers the best experiential professional development, for a great price. Workshops are the core of our conference. Please consider presenting one. We are doing things a little differently this year with an online presentation proposal that includes a 5-step lesson plan and an image. Click here to fill it out.

One of my goals is for our organization to communicate more often and more effectively. One of the challenges we all face is how to keep up with it all. Find us and follow us on Facebook, AZ Art Ed Association. And look for our redesigned website to go live in mid April. Our website will be user friendly, easy to navigate, and professional. And lastly we are changing over to a new list serve provider.

On a wider platform other areas in art education are heating up too. There is significant work being done on our new arts standards by the National Coalition for Core Arts Standards – go to http://nccas.wikispaces.com/ to learn about the latest. And the transition to Common Core standards is providing an opening for welcoming the arts back into the classroom. We can no longer be in our isolated art silo – we are part of a larger connected community. Be sure to participate.

The end of the school year is looming. This is the last stretch. It’s hard not to start checking out. But hang in there. The push for testing is almost over. But the school year is not. This is the time that students really benefit from the stimulating and challenging lessons. They need you to offer exciting engaging concepts now more than ever. The newness of the year is long ago gone. The room is looking a little worse for wear. But your delivery of art ideas and your challenging unique and authentic problems to solve in the art room – now that’s what’s going to keep them happily in their seats until the last day, and make it spring into summer for you too.

Early April in the urban air is energetic and refreshing in its promise for the upcoming summer for all of us in Arizona - a time for travel, inspiration and rejuvenation. Before we all scatter, we hope you enjoy the new "Issuu" of our newsletter for your reading pleasure.  As we look at all of the change in the national, state and local climate we can see how Arizona Art Educators can be encouraged to explore all possibilities of advancement playfully and professionally.

In light of the goals set by our AAEA President, I have been inspired by the variety of supports through professional development that is offered in our association. Whether participating in the annual state conference with peers, regional workshops throughout the state, or ongoing professional learning communities for specific ventures in the local advocacy of the arts, the vibrancy of our membership is reaching far and wide.

Sharing experiences and skills with one another is one of the highlights of my membership. At our annual professional conference "ArtEducon" in Tucson, October 2012, we learned about the culture and creation of the Mojiganja Puppets, (fun to say), modern applications of the paisley and ways to integrate common core standards in the arts as we continue to push toward excellence in our educational practices.

Regional meetings were held at conference and voila'! ... four new regional workshops were scheduled and have brought more than 50 members together to develop new professional relationships, build lessons and gain strength in our collaborative efforts.

Through inviting members in outlying areas all over the state to join in new collaborative ventures, we are developing these rich, and far reaching supportive relationships across our state membership. As we utilize our newly revised and re-oriented Regional Map, we are seeing members active on our council, conference committee, and potential radar to grow by leaps and bounds.

As a member of Arizona Arts Education Association I am consistently motivated to become more active in the arts, as it is my passion. My being an educator with these experiences offers me a variety of engagements. After an invitation, I participated as a panelist at the Phoenix Art Museum Arts Integration & Appetizers hosted by Dawn Usher. This is an ongoing and refreshing forum on Wednesday evenings. Our discussions are centered on contemporary art and its application and implication in our community.

These professional growth opportunities are what every member can look forward to in their own preferred ways. I look forward to attending more of these functions with all of you in the upcoming year in order to better serve and support all of us as AAEA members.

These are engaging and rewarding times in education. Our sights are set on the upcoming 2013 Renaissance & Renewal Sedona AAEA conference in November with you as colleagues, artists and as educators. With vision and focus on the successes of the past and the promise of the future we progress with strength together.

Our regional map has changed a bit, so take a look to see where your region is. We have gone from nine regions to five, and the reason we did is so that each region has an increased availability of collaboration and networking opportunities. Be

on the lookout for regional workshops!

Essential Question:How can students communicate their understanding of symmetry and geometry through art?

Materials:Drawing paper, rulers, protractors, scissors, construction paper, rubber cement, pencils, markers.

Procedures:1. Teach students about radial symmetry, line, and form. Have students practice drawing geometric shapes to create a pattern.2. Students will take an 8”x8” piece of drawing paper and fold it into fourths. Students will draw a geometric pattern using rulers and protractors.

3. Students will transfer their design on the other three sections of their paper to create a radial design.4. Students will color in their design with markers, and mount their piece onto a 9”x9” construction paper square.5. Once mounted, have students poke a small hole in the very center with a pencil and spin.

Assessment:Use a rubric to assess student success and quality based on intricacy of design, use of materials, and the elements and principles used for this project.
