talk from Annette Alison. For those who missed it, we are talking about Australias 3rd largest airline where you hope you are not on the frequent flyer program, but more important-ly, the many services they offer around Austral-ia. We were pleased to be able to make a do-nation on the night for this very important pro-gram. We have five of our members being trained in Food Handling thanks to Chris and the Sandybeach Centre. This will be important for future BBQs at the Farmers Market. Our next fellowship event will be at the Glen-wrights (31A Iona St) on June 4th. More from Megan shortly. Five dedicated Beaumaris members attended the District Assembly this Sunday, and I am certain Trish will update the club on the key di-rections for District and our cluster clubs being planned for her year. Next week we have an update from our Interna-tional Team on Sabu and our many internation-al projects that are active on this tiny island in Indonesia. More importantly, we will learn more about the new pilot project of solar power being installed in a school on the island. John Beaty will chair the meeting.

T #"M: R F"' D M& S%"M Annette Allison is the Public Affairs Manager for the Royal Flying Doctor Service Victoria. An-nette was a Board member of the RFDS for three years before relinquishing her role to take on the Public Affairs position 9 years ago. Annette spent 30 years in the television and radio industry and has filmed many documen-taries in every corner of Australia. She has a solid knowledge of the workings of the Royal Flying Doctor Service and a passion for the out-back and its people. The founder of the RFDS the Reverend John Flynn was one of her early heroes and his story is told on the $20 note. The Royal Flying Doctor Service has been vot-ed four times the most trusted charity in Aus-tralia.

The RFDS began as the dream of the Rev John Flynn, a minister with the Presbyterian Church. He witnessed the daily struggle of pio-neers living in remote areas where just two doctors provided the only medical care for an area of almost 2 million square kilometres. Flynns vision was to provide a mantle of safe-ty for these people and on 15 May 1928, his dream had become a reality with the opening of the Australian Inland Mission Aerial Medical Service (later renamed the Royal Flying Doctor Service) in Cloncurry, Queensland. Over the next few years, the RFDS began to expand across the country. By the 1950s, the RFDS was acknowledged by former Prime Minister Sir Robert Menzies as perhaps the single greatest contribution to the effective settlement of the far distant country that we have witnessed in our time.

Until the 1960s, the Service rarely owned our own aircraft. They used contractors to provide aircraft, pilots and servicing. They progressive-ly began to purchase our own aircraft and em-ploy their own pilots and engineers. Today, the RFDS own a fleet of 61 fully instrumented air-craft with the very latest in navigation technolo-gy. They operate 21 bases across Australia. Their pilots annually fly the equivalent of 25 round trips to the moon and the doctors and flight nurses are responsible for the care of over 270,000 patients; the same as a major hospital such as the Alfred or St Vincents.!

The Rev Flynn, the first pilot Arthur Affleck, and QANTAS founder Hudson Fysh who

leased the De Havilland bi plane Victory to the Australian Inland Mission. The initial

experiment was funded by money donat-ed by H V McKay, founder of the Sunshine

    Harvester Company .
