Goodbye As we head towards the end of the year we are pleased to share with you further details of staff both leaving and joining IGS following on from the update we gave you at Easter. We wish the following members of our team at IGS a fond farewell and the very best for the future as they head off this summer to pastures new.

Mrs Morgan (Assistant Headteacher) We are delighted to celebrate Mrs Morgan’s promotion to Deputy Head (Student Services) at King James's School Knaresborough. Mrs Morgan has been an integral part of our Leadership Team at IGS where she has had responsibilities for Pastoral, SEN, Post 16, Inclusion and Alternative Provision, Safeguarding and teaching since joining us in 2005.

Mr Beynon (Head of Geography) Mr Beynon is looking for opportunities outside teaching and hoping to work in a Geographical field in the Leeds and West Yorkshire area. He is looking into a career change but not ruling out returning to teaching in the future as he has enjoyed passing on his enthusiasm for the outdoors and Geography as a subject.

Mr Stonehouse (Co-ordinator of Citizenship) Mr Stonehouse has been at IGS just under 4 years after carrying out his PGCE placement here too. As he leaves, he admits he will always have a soft spot for IGS.

Mr Cass (Teacher of English)

After 35 Years of teaching, Mr Cass is retiring. His immediate plans include re-stringing his guitars and getting a chance to play them again, walking the Camino de Santiago in the Spring and learning to enjoy Sunday nights!

Mr Mouton (Teacher of MFL) Mr Mouton is leaving IGS after joining the MFL department in 2012 and is looking forward to new challenges.

Miss Drogan (Teacher of Biology) Miss Drogan joined IGS in 2010 and is returning to the North West, taking up a post teaching Biology at St. Ambrose College, an all-boys’ Catholic school in Cheshire.

Mrs Daly (Key Stage 4 Administrator) Mrs Daly heads off on maternity leave at the start of summer – we wish her and her family all the best for their own special project!

We also say goodbye to Mr Abbas (Teacher of ICT), Mrs Scott (Teacher of Art) and Miss Hutchinson (Teacher of RE and Citizenship) who have been with us this year. We wish them the very best in their new endeavours.

Although we will be sad to say goodbye to some of your teachers next week, we are equally excited about next year and confident that our new teachers will pick up the IGS mantle and build on it with enthusiasm and dynamism (once we’ve all had a well-earned summer break)!

It has been a fantastic first year for me as your Headteacher and I have been amazed by your talents, prowess and abilities, detailed in in-form each week, throughout the year. From sporting success to academic accolades and fantastic fundraising...you have been amazing. Year 7 Challenge and Celebration Week 2015 Year 7 were ‘Challenged’ and definitely ‘Celebrated’ their way through ‘The Big Mix’ this

week.

You all had a day at the circus and were taught juggling, diablo, trapeze and hoola hooping, tightrope walking and how to unicycle. Step forward the thrill seekers as you headed off to Lightwater Valley, spent a day ‘down pit’ at the National Coal Mining Museum, enjoyed the high life at Aerial Xtreme, appreciated art at the Yorkshire Sculpture park and walked the Wharfe (sorry about the rain!). What a week you have had...and you were brilliant!

Year 8 Challenge and Celebration Week 2015 Year 8 enjoyed a Challenge and Celebration Week in London with ‘The Big Trip’.

It’s probably quicker to mention what you didn’t see! With visits to the Olympic Park, Globe Theatre, Tower of London, The London Eye, Wembley, Natural History Museum, London Dungeons, Harry Potter Studios, a boat trip on the Thames and you even had time to catch a show...Charlie and the Chocolate Factory! Thank you and well done to the Art group who worked on a fantastic Art Project that will go on to be displayed in the KS3 shelter. Your behaviour during the week was...as expected...impeccable...good job Year 8!

Year 9 Challenge and Celebration Week 2015 Year 9 took over the lake District by land and sea (well lake!) and enjoyed a boat load of

activities.

You journeyed through the Lakeland, taking in the beautiful scenery, took to the lake on boats and canoes, orienteered around the Brathay site and enjoyed a cabaret and bonfire and a disco! Even though the weather wasn’t always dry and sunny we know you got the most out of your week and you can all be very proud of yourselves that you went that extra mile!

Year 10 Challenge and Celebration Week 2015

Our Year 10s and some of our Year 12s focused on the challenge side of Challenge and Celebration week and completed a week of work experience, scattered around the

country as well as one or two in Europe.

It is essential that you have the opportunity to do work experience as it gives you a chance to experience life in the ‘real’ world and make decisions about future career pathways. The week allowed you to impress potential employers on your placement whilst gathering essential work skills which all employers are looking for. You always return from your work experience week with a more mature attitude and are more focused in your studies. Well done to you all— you showed yourselves and the school in the best possible light, impressing employers, who could in the future offer part time work, apprenticeships or even sponsorship through university.

Year 12 Challenge and Celebration Week 2015 Our Post 16 students took part in ‘The Big Choice’ for Challenge and Celebration.

Whether you were an iLeader on a Year 7, 8 or 9 trip, visited Krakow with the Humanities team, headed to Stratford and London with your fellow culture vultures, enjoyed their Chemistry week, organised your own work experience or took part in an EPQ activity you did yourselves proud!

Thank you and well done!

The Art Project

This is the space that will be transformed!

Why not go and have a look at the mural in its new home!

The Art Project has been based on The Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The week started with students working in small mixed ability and year group teams to research the theme and present their findings. Students were then given an article from the declaration to develop ideas around. At the beginning of the second day students split into four groups to generate compositions for the final murals. The students have been outstanding in their work ethic and creativity this week. We are so proud of the group’s ability to work together to resolve issues and produce work of a such a high quality. Well done!

Thank you and well done to our gardeners; Lucy Flesher (7AMD), Sophie Allman (7AMD), Thomas Lambe (7LNR), George Emsley Sharp (7VEC), Natasha Cheater (9JB), Penny Burns (9CW), AJ Johnson (9GPS), Jake Broughton (9GPS), Peter Phillips (9GPS), and Lewis Hunter (9GPS) who impressed the Ilkley in Bloom judges last week. We were visited on Friday 3rd July and they inspected our front garden and talked to the Gardening Club about, what they had planted, and how they were using the garden.

It’s great credit to the Gardening Club that our garden looks both beautiful and functions on a practical level (regularly providing the school kitchen with fresh fruit and vegetable). They work weekly on the garden, as does Mr Johnson who works voluntarily with the students giving them guidance on how to care for the plants. We should find out over the holidays what the judges though of our garden…watch this space in September for more news.

Congratulations to Jamie Kidd (8PB) who won the London Open for the 3rd time in his Taekwondo career. Jamie defeated Liverpool Academy’s Cameron Murphy 14-12 in a fierce semi-final of his new 53kg weight cadet ground, before winning in style 16-8 against Aaron McCardle of South Hams in the final to win gold. This is Jamie’s second 1st Place finish, having won the Keumgang Open in Belgium earlier this year. Jamie also won Bronze at the USA Open earlier this year. The tournament consisted of over 500 competitors from the UK and other European countries, including Belgium, Holland and Norway.

Excellent Eruptions!

Our Year 8 Geography students took to the front garden last week to demonstrate their skill at both building and erupting volcanoes. Each year students take part in this rite of passage and the volcanic creations never fail to amaze both teachers and fellow students...and this year was no exception! Real volcanic eruptions are produced over thousands of years as heat and pressure build up. That aspect of a volcano is very difficult to recreate in a home experiment. However, this experiment gives you an idea of what it might look like!

Add the vinegar and the food colouring...

Squeeze in the washing up liquid and 2 tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda...

This is a classic experiment in which a chemical reaction can create the appearance of a physical volcano eruption. The reaction makes the homemade volcano bubble up and flow down the side like a real volcano (only much faster!) Here’s how the experiments went:

A bit more vinegar just to make sure it blows!

Stand back and watch the eruption!

The summer term, a time to unwind, and gently countdown to the holidays? Not if you’re Molly Harris (12DXB) and Paige Holdsworth (12NPG), two of our Year 12 Media students who have been busy planning two music videos to be shot in just one day, the annual ‘Music Video Day Challenge’! As in previous years, a host of familiar faces appear in the resultant videos.

Molly and Paige deconstructed shot by shot an iconic music video, Christina Aguilera’s Candyman, a jazzy, swing number which uses a 1940s barn dance and diner settings, aiming to reshoot a parody of it. Stand-in locations were identified and rooms booked, with follow-up meetings with site team and catering staff to check on times when B Hall and Courtyard Café could be used. Wigs and hats were sourced, with one of the Year 13 Media students, kindly dashing in to school to lend a wig used for last year’s Lady Gaga shoot! With shortlists and call sheets sorted, locations agreed, and props, make-up and costume organised, all that was missing was…a cast! Paige and Molly accordingly set about involving students from KS3 and KS4, leading to further meetings and discussions with teachers, tutors and Year Leaders. They also gathered up a good number of their Year 12 colleagues, male and female, to do a turn as Christina – Media Studies is never a drag, but is sometimes in drag!

There was, of course, a purpose to all of this frenetic activity, the now traditional start to our A2 Media course. For one, it brings to life abstract academic concepts that we explore, such as Judith Butler’s controversial argument that gender does not exist – we ‘perform’ it. The lessons learned from this event, in pre-production planning, production organisation, filming and editing are a key factor in the great success our Media students have enjoyed – already averaging a UK-leading 94% on coursework in 2014, our marks have gone higher again – and many of these productions will be screened soon in a new local cinema (replacing ads!). The 50,000+ views on our YouTube channel is also a small fraction of the views on students’ own channels. This challenge carries with it the very distinct possibility of failure, as getting all the required shots in such limited time is always extremely difficult, never mind when, as students, you’ve got to organise and direct so many other students (and some staff too!). Having handled two simultaneous shoots at points in the day, with Paige also choreographing dance scenes, we added into the mix another full video shoot, this time getting students and staff to lip-synch and dance in front of a green screen, leading to the viral-style videos we’ve seen following Creative Arts Evenings in the past. These help us explore the academic debate around ‘web 2.0’, with the likes of David Gauntlett arguing we now need to talk about “the former audience” as the barrier between audience and producer has become so blurred. Such ‘convergence’ was also well demonstrated by Paige controlling a Bose speaker through her iPhone for playback of the song during the shoot!

Determined to carry on the tradition of featuring Media Technician Mr Cockshaw in the Media parody videos, the green screen was kept up for an additional day, helping the girls capture not just the iconic twirl, but a host of other staff and students on what turned out to be another busy day of shooting and choreographing! The results of these efforts will hopefully be shared with everyone just before we break up in the final week – the girls have also taken on a request from Ashlands Primary to film their production and produce a DVD for sale!

For now you will have to make do with the sample screenshots from the shoot, and from the blogging and editing that has followed on from this – although you can always google ‘IGSMediaStudies YouTube’ and use the music videos playlists to view past productions, featuring a host of familiar faces, including some no longer at IGS. A link will be sent round once we get editing done – a stiff challenge with Celebration Week meaning this is now down to just a few days of school time! I’d like to thank all the staff and students who took part, the teachers who agreed to give some of these students time to do so, and the catering and site teams for their help and co-operation. I’d also like to congratulate Molly and Paige on a hard job very well done!

Friday 3rd July was our Transition Sports Day, when our new Year 7 students joined with students from all the feeder primaries to take part in the event. Our Year 8 and 9 Sports Leaders ably ran the sports on offer, alongside sporting outside agencies. There was American football, cricket, athletics, rugby, dodgeball and tennis to name just a few of the activities on offer...and judging by the sporting finesse on display we have some fantastic talent heading towards team IGS!

He’s Behind You! Upstagers are holding open auditions for anyone aged between 6 and 20 years old, who is interested in being part of their pantomime, Peter Pan. The show will take place on the Sunday 6th September 2015 and rehearsals will commence in October. The auditions are mainly for the chorus and anyone interested in a principal role should contact the artistic director ahead of the auditions on [email protected]. There will be no need to prepare anything specific for the audition, but it will involve some singing, dancing and acting. Keep an eye on the Upstagers website and Facebook page for further information.

The Key Stage 3 Shelter £16995 Biology microscopes £750 Drama microphones £2438.49 Piano £4000 RE Department artefacts collection and trolley £375

It has been another great year for the PTA, full of fantastic fundraising, and some of who may have also helped. Did you shake a bucket at the car boot sale or take part in the quiz night...if so thank you! So far this year the PTA have raised £8500. This includes:

£107.67 from The Weather Lottery £479.50 from The Quiz Night £2890.43 from The Auction of Promises £5406.90 from the 3 Car Boot Sales

Pentaquark Discovery Last week’s in-form include details about our recent visit to the Large Hadron Collider and it is doubly exciting for us to hear the news from CERN about the discovery of a new particle - the pentaquark. In the 1950's and 60's much smaller colliders began to create unfamiliar particles, in the way described in the previous article. There were so many and they were so different in their properties that people began to speak of the "particle zoo". However, after a while Physicists, especially Murray Gell-Mann, realised that all the heavier beasts could be explained by assuming that they were made of combinations of three simpler particles which he called quarks. Particles made of quarks are called hadrons, hence the name of the collider, and protons and neutrons (but not electrons) are the simplest examples. However, scientists realised that in theory quarks could also exist in combinations of four or even five, and it is one of these five quark particles which has been announced this week. This confirms some theories and opens up exciting new possibilities for future research as the LHC increases in power. Why has a discovery expected for forty years been announced this week? I can only assume that one of the intelligent questions asked by our Ilkley Grammar School students has led to the breakthrough.."
