Para-badmin- ton will be a paralympic sport from 2020 onwards (To- kyo). The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has recognized the Badminton World Federation (BWF) as the competent federation for para-badminton. BWF is thus responsible for the regulations and promotes badminton and para-badminton worldwide with the philosophy “one sport – one team”. This philosophy is now put into practice in Basel: for the first time, the World Championships and Para World Championships are hosted in parallel. The athletes can enter in men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles. Classification Para-Badminton Athletes must be assigned to one of six sport classes. These ensure that athletes are able to compete with other athletes with similar impairments depending on their physi- cal disability and guarantee fairness in para-badminton. WH1 (Wheelchair 1) The athletes use a wheelchair. Core stability: weak to poor. WH2 (Wheelchair 2) The athletes use a wheelchair. Core stability: normal. SL3 (Standing Lower 3) The athletes play standing up and limp while walking or running. They have severe difficulties with starting, stopping, turning, explosive movements, and balance. SL4 (Standing Lower 4) The athletes play standing up and limp slightly when walking or running. They have moderate difficulties with starting, stopping, turning, explosive move- ments, and balance. SU5 (Standing Upper 5) The athletes play standing up and have impairments primarily in their upper limbs. SS6 (Short Stature 6) The athletes are of small stature.
