January 2018
As the 2017 Season comes to an abrupt end, it seems this year of extremes continues right to the end. Despite the wet beginning and the drought in the middle, the plants looked good all season. We continue to grow more of those plants that can take the fluctuations in the weather like, Alliums and Amsonias. While Allium Millenium is the PPA plant of the year, we are focusing on our own selections. Allium x August Asteroides is very close to Millenium in size and stature, it blooms a bit later but just as heavy. The color is a slightly lighter too. Allium x Windy City is closer in color to Millenium but blooms earlier on shorter plants. It’s just beginning to pick up momentum in the trade. We also have Allium Medusa from Walters Gardens like a taller form of the twinging onion with more substantial grey-green foliage and taller pink-purple flowers 12-15” tall. And don’t forget our mostly sterile Chivette which blooms in May and has exceptional vigor. Our newest Amsonia x illustris Seventh Inning Strech is a hybrid with illustris which normally has taller open habit and glossy wide foliage that is a bit loose for my taste, but this more refined foliage is still glossy but about half as wide, yet still ¾”. The fuller plants have more foliage too. The habit is more refined at 3’ + and upright. Bright yellow fall color with red parts in the stem peeking through.Geum may not like a drought, but they do like rich moist conditions and our two new varieties are some of the best. Cherry Bomb starts with semi-double reddish but quickly takes on some rose-pink as it ages and fades. This one is sterile and shorter at 12-15” tall. Top Shelf Margarita is an improved Limoncello with clear lemon yellow flowers that nicely glow against the deep green foliage. The flowers are held on very upright red stems with red buds. Rebloom in July 2017 was around 40%, our most so far.Travel has many benefits and my October 2015 trip to Holland yielded Astrantia major Pink Sparkling Stars from Rijnbeek Nursery. It has proven as vigorous here as it was in their fields. Mounds of cut foliage bloom twice a year on 24” + stems with intricate umbels of wine colored pedicels holding pink florets above creamy white and green bracts.More daylilies and 8 new Hostas keep those staples exciting and ever evolving, including of the biggest and best selling Empress Wu and a mini called Sun Mouse. After years of promoting Lavandula Blue Cushion as the best for the Midwest I have decided to offer a new one that has foliage that looks so clean it could be fake. Essence Purple is that in-between lavender blue-purple color. We have a first year offering of Liatris ligulistylis Butterfly Magnet our seed strain is more reserved at 4’ – 5’ tall but has the same chemical attraction the male Monarch butterflies love. After a few years trying to get a nice crop of Bradbury’s Bee Balm, we have a crop worthy. Our form has deep green foliage with chocolate-red highlights and spring growth. Soft pink spotted flowers in June. Best on well drained to dry soils. Phlox x paniculata Jeana has been on our radar for a while. It’s supposed to be more attractive to butterflies. Smaller flowers in large cluster on 4’ plus tall plants. We have two new Rudbeckias. One is the shorter form of Henry Eilers called Little Henry which is still 3-4’ tall. The flowers have rolled yellow petals and bloom from late summer into fall. Then we have Rudbeckia x Glitters Like Gold PPAF that has broad hairy foliage that resembles Goldsturm in size but is resistant to Septoria fungus. Heavy blooming plant start in July on 3’ stems. Flowers are a bright gold color and 3” plus wide. Sedum rupestre Making Progress PPAF is a great compliment to Angelina and Blue Spruce. In late fall through May the stems are plum red with dark green needle like foliage. Yellow flowers are a sharp contrast. Lastly, we are propagators and growers so let us grow something for you. A few of our favorites to grow are Allium, Aster, Echinacea, Geranium, Heuchera, Peony, Penstemon, Phlox, Salvia, Sedum, Veronica and almost any grass.Thank you all for your continued support. We look forward to another year of growth and sharing our love for plants and the joy they can bring. I’m already looking forward to spring and winter is just starting.
