Background about the projectIn April 2010, EWS-WWF launched a project to implement a comprehensive awareness and research programme using the latest in science and technology, including satellite tracking, with the aim of understanding the biological and development needs of the turtle population and to identify habitat use and distribution. This will, in turn, promote the conservation of the marine turtles of the region, and even worldwide. The project engages important stakeholders in each country involved, and will combine scientific research and monitoring with environmental awareness, centered on marine turtle protection. The overall aim is to bring about regional change – a positive change resulting in the long-term conservation of marine turtles.

So far, 25 female Hawksbill turtles have been tagged in Iran, Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Over the next 3 years, the project aims to tag up to 75 post-nesting Hawksbill turtles in the region to verify important overseas migration routes and near-shore habitats that are favoured by turtles.

Interesting FindingsOnly a few months into its first year, the project has already generated several interesting findings. For example, all 5 turtles tagged in Iran unexpectedly left the coral rich Iranian cost, and headed towards Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

And against all expectations, one of the 5 tagged turtles in Oman left the Omani coast and travelled into the Gulf, moving into the same feeding ground preferred by the turtles tagged in the UAE. This is the first recorded migration of a turtle from the Sea of Oman to the Gulf, challenging a long-established theory.Track the journeys of these magnificent turtles on our project’s website www.gulfturtles.com.

Human activities over the last two centuries have steadily tipped the scale of survival against the Hawksbill turtle. Constantly threatened by habitat loss, accidental fishing, pollution, human harvest, and climate change, these ancient mariners have been declared critically endangered by the IUCN Red List of endangered species.

Although some regions of the Gulf area and the Sea of Oman remain a popular spot for Hawksbill turtles, there has been increased pressure on their numbers due to recent development in the area. Under these conditions, the Emirates Wildlife Society in association with WWF (EWS-WWF) has embarked on a region-wide marine turtle conservation project.

Marine Turtle Conservation project

This issueThis issue’s main focus is The Marine Turtle Conservation project that aims to protect and conserve the marine turtle habitat and ensure their survival. We also interviewed Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, CEO of Masdar, who shared Masdar’s vision with us. Last but not the least; we hope that you enjoy reading this issue as much as we have enjoyed putting it together for you..

The packs are available at the Shelter (both Al Quoz and Sharjah), Al Boom Dive Centres, and the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry. More locations will be coming up in the near future, so keep an eye on www.gulfturtles.com for an updated list.

How you can helpSponsor a turtle:If you are an organisation that wishes to support the project, you can sponsor a turtle for AED 30,000, thus gaining the right to name the turtle and track its migration pattern. This amount covers the full tagging costs for that particular turtle.

Adopt a turtle: For individuals who are looking to contribute to the project, we offer symbolic turtle adoption packs. These packs include a brochure on the Gulf Marine Turtles Conservation Project, a certificate with your name on it, a sticker, a facts card and a turtle soft toy. All funds collected from the packs will exclusively go towards developing this project.

Tagging Process- The process of tagging is painless and completely

safe for the turtle. A post-nesting turtle is fitted with a transmitter at the top of her shell using a combination of fibreglass and resin.

- The transmitter sends information to the tracking satellite every time the turtle surfaces to breathe, and powers off when she is underwater.

- As the shell of the turtle grows, the glue around the transmitter gradually cracks, causing the transmitter to harmlessly fall off.

CORPORATE INTERVIEW

with Dr. Sultan Al Jaber CEO of Masdar

1) Can you introduce our readers to the different units of Masdar?

Masdar was launched in April 2006, rooted in the principles of resource conservation and sustainable development practiced by the UAE’s first President and Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. In fact, Sheikh Zayed received the WWF’s highest accolade, a “Golden Panda”, in 1997 – marking the first time the award was bestowed on a head of state.

Masdar itself is a new kind of energy company that takes a holistic approach to the changing realities of power generation, transmission and consumption around the world. Commercially driven, Masdar operates across the full spectrum of renewable energy and sustainability technologies and seeks to collaborate with global partners and institutions as it helps develop a “greenprint” for how we will live and work in the future. As we move toward these goals, we also play a major role in contributing to the Emirate’s economic diversification and to development of its knowledge-based industries.

Dr. Sultan Al Jaber is the CEO of Masdar, a multi-faceted company advancing the development commercialisation and deployment of renewable energy solutions and clean technologies. In this interview Dr. Sultan touches upon the five main divisions of Masdar and gives us a comprehensive outline on the much talked about Masdar Institute of Science and Technology .

Page 7: in association with - Pandaassets.panda.org/downloads/dar_alkhair24_eng_print.pdf · 2010. 10. 26. · In partnership with the Environmental Agency-Abu Dhabi. Endorsed by the Ministries

Masdar operates through five divisions:Masdar Institute of Science and Technology is an independent, homegrown, research-driven graduate university focused on the science and engineering of renewable energy and sustainable technologies.

Masdar Power is a developer and operator of renewable power generation projects and also strategically invests in technology relevant to utility-scale renewable energy.

Masdar Carbon manages projects that bring reductions in carbon emissions through energy efficiency and waste-heat/CO2 recovery, as well as through carbon capture and sequestration (CCS).

Masdar Capital invests in the world’s most promising renewable energy and clean technology companies. Its two funds are the Masdar Clean Tech Fund and the DB Masdar Clean Tech Fund, both of which are growth and late-stage venture capital investment vehicles.

Masdar City, which aspires to be one of the most sustainable cities in the world, is an emerging global clean-technology cluster located at the heart of the international renewable energy and sustainable technology industry.

2) Can you tell us more about the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology? What role does it play within Masdar’s overall activities?

The Masdar Institute of Science and Technology is the world’s first graduate-level institution dedicated to providing real world solutions to issues of sustainability. The Institute’s goal is to become a world-class research-driven institution focused on advanced energy and sustainable technologies. Located in Abu Dhabi, Masdar Institute aims to support the Emirate’s economic diversification by nurturing highly skilled human capital and serving as a source of intellectual capital – thereby directly contributing to the development of the Emirate’s knowledge-led economy. Masdar Institute, which enjoys a strong collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), integrates theory and practice to incubate a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship. The first intake of students was in 2009 with 88 students from 22 countries, selected from over 1200 applications. Already more than 30 research projects are underway and seven patents are pending at the Institute, which is located in the heart of Masdar City. Eventually Masdar Institute is expected to host 150 faculty and 800 students. The Institute is the backbone of the research, development and application of alternative energy and sustainable technologies that feed the other facets of Masdar, including Masdar City.

3) How do you see this sustainable city affecting the current urban fabric, both locally and globally?

Masdar City is the first of its kind and so is pioneering how sustainable cities of the future can be master planned, designed, built and operated. What we learn here can be shared with the wider Abu Dhabi and UAE community, as well as the world at large. The City will help drive research and development into new sustainable technologies by challenging the convention that ‘sustainable’ means constrained living. By implementing and integrating the full range of sustainability technologies, we believe we can substantially reduce the environmental footprint of the city and its residents, while still delivering a world-class working and living experience. Regarding the urban fabric more specifically, the City is blurring lines that generally are not crossed in more conventional developments. For example, there are no separate zones for industry, culture, academics, business, entertainment, residential or leisure. All are integrated. We also are eliminating the divide between agricultural and decorative land use. We are using the term “productive landscaping” to refer to our efforts to replace purely decorative planting with trees and plants that will provide shade and cooler green areas, while also producing fruits and vegetables such as dates, mangos and cucumbers.

4) How can the Private Sector play a role in all of this?

The private sector is already playing an integral role in many of Masdar’s projects because we understand that it will be the thousands of innovations and improvements made by private sector companies and research universities across the globe that will help the world collectively address the challenges posed by climate change and the need for energy security. At Masdar, we have a strong ‘partnership approach’ which ensures that we collaborate with leading organizations in their respective fields. For example, we have teamed with Spain’s SENER on a joint venture company that is developing several innovative concentrated solar power projects and with Deutsche Bank to develop the DB Masdar Clean Tech Fund, which raised USD265 million in its first close earlier this year.

5) What does protecting the environment mean to you personally?

As a global citizen who values the world we live in, I have always felt strongly about contributing to the preservation of the environment and the earth’s natural resources. The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan taught us the value of conservation, and now more than ever, we need to stand up, on a global scale, and take individual actions that recognize the need to secure the sustainability of our planet for future generations.
