Summary
While Alcatel took a major competitor out of play by acquiring Lucent Technologies in 2006, It also took on a
gargantuan challenge in consolidating and rationalizing the two organizations from top to bottom. Recent losses at
Alcatel-Lucent (-$5.12bn net for the year following the merger), coupled with a weak outlook for its 2008 fiscal year,
point to bigger problems than the threats posed by the IMS standards, but the vendor's ability to address the IMS
paradigm will be instrumental to its long-term success.
