IMS: A New Layered Network Architecture Supporting MultimediaIMS: A New Layered Network Architecture Supporting Multimedia

• IMS is a next-generation architecture designed by the 3GPP to support:

• Multimedia convergence of voice, video, messaging and data

• Access convergence amongwireline and wireless networks

• IMS splits traditional (closed) networks into independent architectural layers

• Application / Service Layer• Switching / Session Control Layer• Connectivity / Transport Layer

• IMS creates converged networks• Simpler & more standardized• Packet-based (IP)• Eliminates the need for expensive

Operator Benefits of IMS Operator Benefits of IMS

• Faster and easier development of new, differentiated applications which reduce churn and increase ARPU and can be accessed by any network

• Extend capabilities of existing applications

• Enables rich and dynamic service combinations (e.g., mid-call multimedia; combined TDM/IP services in the same session)

• Common application servers and switches can serve any type of access network

• Lower financial risk of introducing new services, since they can run on existing platforms

Lower OPEX• New services can be integrated

faster and cheaper• Lower interop costs since IMS is

based on SIP and industry standards

• Lower maintenance costs due to reduced number of systems

• Reduced costs thanks to single subscriber management across multiple networks

Lower CAPEX

Netcentrex IMS RoadmapNetcentrex IMS Roadmap

• AS (Application Server)• MyCall and Business Services that run on standard platform Intel AdvancedTCA• Also Video Service Broker, Video Calling, and Video Mail applications servers

• MRF (Media Resource Function)• MRF is available today, based MCS IP Media Server, supports Intel AdvancedTCA

• MGCF (Media Gateway Control Function)• This Netcentrex IMS component is available today (current SMC-SS7)

• BGCF (Breakout Gateway Control Function)• Class 4 functionality used by two of the three largest Class 4 service providers

• P-CSCF (Proxy Call Session Control Function)• SBC functionality already in CCS softswitch platform including NAT traversal and PT• NeoTIP acquisition for increased IP security and A-BGF function for IP trunking

• I-CSCF (Interrogating Call Session Control Function)• In addition to standard I-CSCF functionality, the Netcentrex I-CSCF supports pre-IMS

(IETF SIP and H.323) environments for load-balancing purposes and LNP• S-CSCF (Serving Call Session Control Function)

• Currently developing a S-CSCF that builds on Netcentrex’ carrier-grade expertise• Will connect to optional pre-integrated application servers and non-intelligent

terminals for supplementary features such as call waiting, transfer, conference, etc.

IMS Market AdoptionIMS Market Adoption

• Fixed Incumbents• IMS gives fixed operators more powerful ability to manage subscriber identity • IMS allows incumbents to rapidly deploy new services to compete against ITSPs,

cable operators and other new operators• Internet Telephony Service Providers (ITSPs)

• ITSPs are already network-agnostic• IMS will allow ITSPs to easily develop applications and access other networks to

also become MVNOs (if they embrace IMS standards)• Cable Operators

• With IMS, cable operators can migrate from their initial TV focus to full triple play over a common infrastructure

• Mobile Operators• Can implement IMS for applications such as Push-to-talk and WiFi integration• But to achieve the full benefits of IMS, mobile operators need to 1) fully upgrade

their networks to 3G; 2) build IMS client software into mobile handsets; 3) develop IMS compliant applications

• Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs)• With IMS, MVNOs can develop network-independent applications which can be

easily ported to different host-operators
