Underrated sires come to the fore
The race of the year.” At least so far, according
to the reaction of many after a thrilling finish
and sterling win by Verry Elleegant (Zed) in
the Chipping Norton Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at
Randwick on Saturday. This is what racing is all
about.

have been colts with the most expensive of those yesterday the Lord
Kanaloa colt who co-trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace bought
in partnership with Coolmore. The dual-state trainers already train this
season’s Inglis Nursery (RL, 1000m) winner Acrobat (Fastnet Rock) for
Coolmore, among others.
With a strong working relationship already in place, Maher and the
Coolmore team agreed to team up on the session-leading colt after both
parties assessed him on the sale grounds late last week.
“I saw the horse up at Kulani and they did a great job preparing horses
for the sale and he presented beautifully,” the leading trainer said.
“He has got a beautiful temperament. There was a horse playing up
out the back next to him and he just went about his business.
“That is something that is very important in colts. You want them to go on
and be stallions and I think he’s got the necessary characteristics to do that.
(A horse’s temperament) is a bit of an insight into how they handle pressure.
“I know they are only young and walking, but you see them on the
farm and you see them again when they first get to the sale and again
when they have been out of their stables a lot of times, particularly the
popular ones, so you can see how they react to that little bit of pressure.”
He added: “It was great to purchase another colt like this with
Coolmore. We’ve had the likes of Merchant Navy and some other really
nice horses through the stable. We’ve got Loving Gaby’s sister as well out
of Magic Millions, so they are great to race with and hopefully we can find
the next Coolmore Stud Stakes or Royal Ascot winner.”
Offered by Kulani Park on behalf of Arrowfield Stud as Lot 504, the
colt is the first foal out of ATC
Sweet Embrace Stakes (Gr 2,
1200m) winner Believe Yourself
(Sebring).
Kulani Park’s Rhys Smith
had previously rejected
overtures from Arrowfield to sell
yearlings on their behalf, but
took on the opportunity for the
2021 sale.
“Paul (Messara) had
approached me a few years ago
and we wouldn't do it then, but
we decided it would be a good
idea to do it this year,” Smith
said after the sale of the Lord
Kanaloa colt.
“He's a great colt, a really early horse, good
muscle and did everything right and looked
a treat. He did over 200 parades, which is a
lot of parading, and Coolmore has bought
him, so obviously they’ll look to win an
early race and get him to stud.
He's going to get every chance and
I think Ciaron is the right trainer for him,
Whether it be in Melbourne or Sydney I'm sure
he'll be in those early two-year-old races.”
Signing under the Ciaron Maher Bloodstock banner, the trainer has
bought 16 yearlings with various parties so far this week and he described
the sale as “very solid”.
“You have got to do your homework and the horses you like, you have
to always go a bid or two more,” he said.
“It’s always quite strong here in Melbourne and the studs like
Arrowfield have a draft through Kulani Park supporting the Victorian
breeding industry. That is great and I think the sale is getting stronger and
stronger each year.
“There are also more and more Victorian breeders and you’ve got the
likes of Toronado and Written Tycoon, who was standing here, Rosemont
is expanding and getting more active, so it is really bright for the future of
Victoria.
“It has always been second fiddle for the Hunter but it’s certainly
improving each year.”
While Maher and Eustace maintained their spot at the top of the buyers’
podium, fellow Victorian training partnerships Robbie Griffiths and Mathew
de Kock and Lindsay Park have also been active, buying eight yearlings each,
while Caulfield-based Clinton McDonald and agent-trainer brothers Paul
and Mike Moroney have also each signed for eight yearlings.
The aggregate is already up 20 per cent year-on-year, with
$56,991,500 worth of yearlings already traded at the Melbourne sale at
an average of $143,195, up 11 per cent compared to the 2020 auction.
The median of $110,000 has held firm, but the clearance rate of 86 per
cent shows the demand from a huge array of buyers to participate in
the market.
Last night, Inglis general manager of bloodstock sales and marketing
Sebastian Hutch described the proceedings at the Premier sale so far as a
“sterling two days”.
“We knew there were some good horses right the way through the
catalogue, and there are some good horses to come tomorrow, but the
nature of the competition on the really sought after horses was fantastic,"
Hutch said.

horses we have bred but I have lost a lot of money
along the way with that,” laughed Travis Kelly.
Casting jokes aside, Kelly reflected on
the intriguing life journey of Lunar Fox
and explained; “I bought his dam from the
broodmare sale in Melbourne. She was already
in foal with him. I really liked the Foxwedges
and we foaled him down at home.
“We got him into the weanling sale and put
a price on his head and nobody wanted him
there and got him into the Melbourne Premier
Yearling Sale and nobody wanted him there
either. Then we tried to syndicate him and train
him ourselves but we could not sell shares and
hence we fought tooth and nail to get him into
the Melbourne Gold sale.
“We got him into that sale and luckily Karina
(O’Sullivan) bought him and the rest is history.”
So what was it, in his view, that was putting
buyers off him for so long?
“The Foxwedge colts were hard to move,”
added Kelly. “He’s been known as more of a
fillies-type stallion so that probably pushed a
few away I would suggest.
“He was a lovely yearling and athletic. We
don't get them as big and bulky as other breeders,
we breed racehorses and not show ponies, so
maybe that put them off as well,” he said.
Together with Rebecca, who trains a small
string of racehorses and manages a band of
12 broodmares at their 22-acre property in
Gippsland, they juggle commitments of raising
their two young children and work long hours to pay
the feed bills and run their little horse enterprise.
Rebecca, who is out at Oaklands Junction
this week selling yearlings under their ‘Kelly
Thoroughbreds’ banner, took some time out of her
busy schedule to share her views on Lunar Fox.
“I always liked him, he had a lovely attitude.
The mare (Grant’s Moon) was lovely and had
a great attitude and she's thrown that into her
foals,” she said.
She confessed to another rejection twist in
the Lunar Fox tale that goes right back to his
first few months as a foal when he was gracing
their paddocks.
Kelly offered the original owners of his dam,
Grant’s Moon (Malibu Moon), the opportunity
to invest in him when he was a foal.
“The original breeders of the mare came
and saw him but they said no and thought the
line might not have enough depth and now

he's made the line again but unfortunately the
mare’s gone.”
Grant’s Moon’s life was cut short at the age
of just 16 after breaking her neck in a paddock
accident.
Her legacy might yet live on through two fillies
she left before her death. One is an unnamed
youngster by Holler (Commands) that Rebecca
trains herself and the other by Frosted (Tapit)
which is in a foal share arrangement with
Darley and expected to go through the Inglis
Melbourne Gold Yearling Sale this year.
The person that showed the ultimate leap
of faith in Grant’s Moon’s best son, Lunar Fox,
was trainer Karina O’Sullivan who selected him
at the Inglis VOBIS Gold Yearling Sale in 2019.
“When Karina started looking at him he got
cheeky on the turnarounds and that's what she
said confirmed her bid. Some buyers like that
bit of spunk,” said Kelly.
“Karina took the punt on him and got a
Sires’ Produce Stakes win out of him.”
Kelly admits he looked a different horse at
the Melbourne Gold sale compared to when he
was offered at Premier.
“He really furnished up after the first sale.
He went out for a month and came back in and
it did him the world of good,” she added.
“When they get broken in and have some
time out it’s amazing the step they take.”
Karina and her father Terry O’Sullivan, the
original trainers of Lunar Fox, are now serving
out a disqualification on cobalt charges and in
March last year the horse was moved into the
care of Horsham trainer Paul Preusker.
Until Saturday, his form since joining that
stable was patchy.
“He had a few just OK runs and obviously
they found the key to turning him around,” added
Rebecca Kelly. “We always had faith he had the
ability. They put the blinkers on him at the right
time and gave him a bit of
a hurdle at home and that
woke him up.”
Lunar Fox has since
been awarded a wild card
entry into the $5 million
All-Star Mile (1600m) at
Flemington on March
13 and, as he continues
on in his racing life, will
probably have to do a bit
more than the average
Group 1-winning horse to
prove his was no fluke.
As for the Kelly’s who bred this brown colt
with the crooked white blaze, life goes on as
normal doing what they love; breeding and
selling a few yearlings each year.
At yesterday’s Inglis Melbourne Premier
Yearling Sale they had no trouble this time
in selling an Impending (Lonhro) filly out of
Young Love (Danzero) for $80,000 to Moloney
Racing.

Kemalpasa in top shape for Newmarket assaultTrainer Richard Jolly is hoping for better luck
on the straight track at Flemington when
Kemalpasa (Magnus) lines up in the Newmarket
Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) on Saturday. Jolly, who
trains in partnership with daughter Chantelle,
travelled to Melbourne on Saturday to watch
All Banter (I’m All The Talk) and Alleboom
(Spirit Of Boom) finish out of the placings in
their respective races. Kemalpasa, however, has
a brilliant record over Saturday's 1200-metre
course with two wins and a third from three
starts. The five-year-old gelding has had two
starts following a break, finishing second to
Behemoth (All Too Hard) in the Durbridge
Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Morphettville in
January before running third in the Oakleigh
Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) on February 20. "He's a
horse that gets better with a bit of racing and
we're quietly confident that he's a good genuine
chance on the way he ran the other day," Jolly
said. "And he loves the straight."
Waller sprinters unlikely to clashStablemates Nature Strip (Nicconi) and Haut
Brion Her (Zoustar) are unlikely to clash in the
Challenge Stakes (Gr 2, 1000m) at Randwick
on Saturday, with Waller keen to save the latter
for The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m) a fortnight later.
Nature Strip showed he had returned to form
with an impressive victory in the Black Caviar
Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at Flemington
on February 13, while Haut Brion Her’s last
competitive run was a credible second behind
Gytrash (Lope De Vega) in the $1 million Yes
Yes Yes Stakes (1300m). "I don't think she (Haut
Brion Her) could beat Nature Strip over 1000
metres so the owners are happy to wait for the
Galaxy at this stage. But she is ready to go if she
needs to," Waller said. "You'll see her in the
nominations but I spoke to one of the owners
and he was keen to wait for the Galaxy."
Nature Strip back in Sydney for ChallengeNature Strip has continued to thrive since
returning to Sydney following his win in the
Black Caviar Lightning, according to Chris
Waller. The six-year-old was given a few days off
after holding out the late charge of stablemate
September Run (Exceed And Excel) to win
the Lightning at Flemington first up and he is
in good shape ahead of the Challenge Stakes
this weekend. "He had a few days at the farm
in Melbourne and came up the Wednesday
after his race," Waller said. "He's settled in well.
He galloped last week, galloped (Saturday)
morning and he will have one this week." There
were 11 nominations for the Challenge Stakes
on Monday, including Godolphin sprinter
Bivouac (Exceed And Excel), who also holds
nominations for the Canterbury Stakes (Gr
1, 1300m) and Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1,
1200m) in Melbourne and up-and-coming filly
Written Beauty (Written Tycoon).
All-Star Mile field confirmedThe All-Star Mile (1600m) field was completed
last night with the announcement of five
wildcard runners that will line up in the $5
million contest at Moonee Valley on March 13.
Star Of The Seas (Ocean Park) secured his berth
with victory in the Blamey Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m)
at Flemington on Saturday, while Shout The Bar
(Not A Single Doubt) has also been handed a
wildcard after claiming the Empire Rose Stakes
(Gr 1, 1600m). Saturday’s upset Australian
Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Lunar Fox
(Foxwedge) will be the lone three-year-old in
the field after connections accepted a wildcard.
Mugatoo (Henrythenavigator), who finished
second in a trial at Gosford yesterday morning,
has been handed a wildcard, while the final slot
has gone to CF Orr Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) winner
Streets Of Avalon (Magnus).
Berry excited to reunite with RemarqueTommy Berry is looking forward to reuniting
with the Team Hawkes-trained Remarque
(Snitzel) when he attempts to put his Golden
Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) campaign back on track in
the Todman Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick
on Saturday. Remarque, an impressive winner
on debut at Rosehill January, was slated to run
in the Silver Slipper (Gr 2, 1100m) but suffered
a setback, prompting his Hawkes Racing
training team to change course to the Todman
Stakes. Berry has not been aboard Remarque
since he finished second to Shaquero (Shalaa)
in a February 11 barrier trial but he has
been keeping an eye out for the youngster at

Eight), is also the fourth dam of Verry Elleegant.
His blood is purple yet his sire record goes
relatively unnoticed. The demand for his stock
at recent sales doesn’t match his ability to get
winners - 144 of them in total, of which 14 are
stakes winners.
He has a very mixed history which includes,
incredibly, a stint serving Clydesdale mares. That
would seem a hurdle too tall to overcome yet he has,
and this season is proving to be one of his best.
In January, Waisake claimed the Wellington
Cup (Gr 3, 3200m), a week ago Robusto bagged the
Avondale Cup (Gr 2, 2400m) and, of course, Verry
Elleegant is going gangbusters across the Tasman.
Furthermore, Irish Flame had a very lucrative
spring in Victoria, culminating with a win in the
Ballarat Cup (Listed, 2000m). A two-year-old
Group 3 winner in New Zealand, he has won nine
times with stakes earnings of $700,000.
Speaking to ANZ Bloodstock News
yesterday, Grangewilliam Stud’s Mark
Corcoran, with half a laugh, believed the sire
was indeed, very much underappreciated.
“Yes, he definitely is,” said Corcoran. “I
was looking at his average earnings stats per
runner. His colts earn an average of $62,000
and his fillies $105,000. They don’t fetch big
money at the sales and his service fee is very
modest so he compares very favourably with
Savabeel.”
When asked about any increased enquiries
for the stallion’s services, considering his recent
results, Corcoran replied, rather candidly: “No,
not really. His first year he got a good-sized
book but after that it has dropped away. The last
few years he has served 60 to 65 mares.
“They’re just not horses that sell well so he
hasn’t been hugely supported. He doesn’t leave
big, outstanding looking yearlings but they can
run. He has over 140 individual winners and 14
stakes winners, that’s one in ten will get you a
stakes winner.”

“He got off to a rough start as a sire and that
is hard to shake off. Then again, what he has
done, he’s done it the tough way, all the way,”
added Corcoran.
“If he’d been at one of the big studs he could
have been anything but he got hurt and didn’t
do it on the track so he was never going to get
that major start.”
Regarding the future for Zed, Corcoran is
optimistic.
“Irish Flame finished just in behind them in
the Blamey on Saturday,” he said. “He would be
looking for a little more distance but is shaping
up nicely.
“I’ve had few conversations with several
trainers and there are a number of good ones
coming through the ranks. I keep hearing good
things so it’s not going to end for while yet.
“The Jomara boys have a couple and Allan
Sharrock tells me he has a pretty smart one,
too.”
The weekend also saw another stallion
collect a notable success who could fall into the
unenviable ‘underappreciated’ category, this
time on home soil as the Matamata Breeders’
Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) went the way of Bonny
Lass (Super Easy).
In what was a strong performance as well
as a clever ride from Craig Grylls, the filly
delivered a sixth individual stakes winner for
Hallmark Stud’s Super Easy (Darci Brahma),
who is showing signs of having a promising
future, despite not having worthy recognition
thus far.
Many forget that Super Easy was no slouch
before he departed NZ shores for Singapore.
In three starts at two he won at Trentham, ran
second in the Eclipse Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) then
finished fourth in the 2011 Karaka Million (RL,
1200m).
In Singapore the following season he was
unbeaten in 11 starts including five stakes wins
and was declared champion three-year-old,
champion sprinter and Singapore Horse of the
Year. Yes, he was that good.
At four, from nine starts he added a further
three stakes wins and finished third against
the internationals in the Krisflyer International
Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m). He racked up another
Horse of the Year title and was champion
sprinter a second time.
In addition to being very capable on the
track, Super Easy is also very well related. His
sire Darci Brahma (Danehill) was the champion
NZ two- and three-year-old of his crop and
is now consistently among the leading New
Zealand sires with 11 Group 1 winners out of a
total of 51 stakes winners.
Super Easy’s dam, 2015 NZ Broodmare of
the Year Parfore (Gold Brose), has produced
Group 1 winners Tiger Tees (Dubawi) and
Terravista (Captain Rio), Group 2 winner Ball
Of Muscle (Dubawi), Listed winner Our Lukas
(Generous) and Super Easy. The on-track
record of these five reveals a combined record
of 64 wins, including 34 of them at stakes level.
Bonny Lass is Super Easy’s fourth stakes
winner this season. Super Strike took out
the Anniversary Handicap (Gr 3, 1600m) at
Trentham in January. The four-year-old has a
super strike rate of five wins and four placings
in nine starts and looks like a miler with a very
bright future.
Sheezallmine beat a quality field in the
Stewards’ Handicap (Gr 3, 1200m) in November
while, more recently, Spine Tingle was a last-
start winner of the Oaks Prelude (Listed,
1800m) at New Plymouth a month ago.
Bonny Lass is the third winner and first
stakes winner from the Listed-placed Le Bec
Fin (Tale Of The Cat) mare Posh Bec, a winner of
three races. She is all-Hallmark-bred as Le Bec
Fin was resident at Hallmark Stud where Super
Easy (Darci Brahma) is currently domiciled.
Mark Baker, principal at Hallmark Stud,
told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday that he
believes Super Easy is representing excellent
value for breeders.
“The term “underappreciated” is quite
true. He is value, there’s no doubt about it,”
responded Baker. “After Saturday’s Breeders’
Stakes, his stakes-winners-to-runners ratio,
of the sires based in New Zealand, has him
heading the rankings for the current season,
ahead of Savabeel.
“We have plenty to hang our hats on this
season but, interestingly, all the stakes winners
have been retained by their breeders.
“Bonny Lass was born and raised here
at Hallmark. Sandy Moore, vice president at
Ellerslie, bred her. He also bred and raced her
mother, Posh Bec, who won three and ran
second in the Soliloquy Stakes, and it went from
there,” added Baker.
“Hallmark leased Posh Bec from Sandy and
we got a filly by Shocking. The filly (at foot) was
late so the mare has had a rest but she is booked
to Super Easy again this coming spring.”
Super Easy is only twelve and his eldest are
six-year-olds. His best may not have been seen
yet, but there is little doubt that his bookings
will increase this year and very likely the quality
of his mares will too.

Bonny Lass TRISH DUNELL
Kiwis in AustraliaWhile Verry Elleegant stole the show at
Randwick with her fabulous performance,
in Melbourne another Kiwi, Star of The Seas
(Ocean Park), also representing the Waller
stable, cemented his place in the lucrative All-
Star Mile (1600m) to be run at Moonee Valley
on March 13.
Bred by Brent and Cherry Taylor at
Trelawney Stud, Star Of The Seas’ Blamey
Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) victory ranks as the best of
his eight career wins.
In addition to the All-Star Mile, Star Of
The Seas holds a nomination to the Doncaster
Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m), a race in which he
finished second last year, one of four Group 1
placings he has assembled, all at Randwick.
Star Of The Seas is one of six winners and
the second stakes winner from his imported
dam Stella Livia (Titus Livius), herself a half-
sister to German champion Ransom Of War
(Red Ransom).
Meanwhile, over in Perth at Ascot there
were two stakes races run and the Kiwis were
triumphant in both.
The Bob Peters-bred and raced Western
Empire (Iffraaj) gave his opponents no chance
whatsoever over the concluding stages of the
Lex Piper Stakes (Listed, 1600m), bolting clear
by five and half lengths.
Foaled in New Zealand, Western Empire
went into the race with a win and three stakes
placings to his name and came out of the race
with his maiden stakes success at start seven.
He is the first stakes winner from Western
Jewel (Jeune), winner of the 2011 Perth Cup (Gr
2, 2400m), one of her eight wins.
Two races later, the Kiwi-bred three-year-
old filly Brave Angel (Tavistock) upset the
favourite Solaia (Toronado) in the Ascot 1000
Guineas (Listed, 1800m). Solaia looked the
winner at the 200 metres but Brave Angel cut
her down in the last couple of strides to claim
her maiden stakes win at start seven.
Brave Angel was offered but passed in out
of Brighthill Farms’ 2019 Karaka Book 1 draft.
Her winning dam, Svita (Success Express), has
produced three winners and now two stakes
winners. Her first, Astara (Dalghar), is the winner
of Ellerslie’s Soliloquy Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m).
Svita is a half-sister to Sandown Guineas (Gr
2, 1600m) winner Schilling (Bianconi) as well as
Group 3 winner Estonian Princess (Snitzel).
The Local SceneOtaki staged their Weight-For-Age
Classic on Saturday and, against a small
field of seven, Avantage (Fastnet Rock) was
not expected to be extended. However,
Callsign Mav (Atlante), second to her in the
BCD Group Waikato Sprint (Gr 1, 1400m) at
Te Rapa two weeks ago, ran the now eight-
time Group 1 winner to a shortening three-
quarters of a length deficit at the line.
Rider Opie Bosson commented: “I could
see him (Callsign Mav) out of the corner of my
eye, but once I gave her a few backhanders she
put her head out and had a crack.”
Meanwhile travelling stable-head Paul
Richards added: “Half way down the straight
she had a fight on her hands and she found
plenty.”
Avantage is giving stablemate Melody Belle
(Commands) a good run for her money as the
best in the country. Her next assignment is the
Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m)
and it is very possible that the two stable stars
will clash.
At Matamata, the two-year-old colts’ race,
the Matamata Slipper (Gr 3, 1200m), went
the way of the Australian-bred Sword Of State
(Snitzel). And most impressive he was too.
Ineligible for the Karaka Million (RL,
1200m), he gave the winner of that race,
stablemate On The Bubbles (Brazen Beau), a
galloping lesson and at the finish was out on his
own by more than six lengths. The time was a
very sharp 1:08.78.
Paisley Park (Azamour), a six-year-old, was
finally rewarded with his maiden stakes success
when taking out the Kaimai Stakes (Listed, 2000m).
He is one four winners and the first stakes
winner from his dam Musical Magic, herself a
member of the one and only crop of champion
sprinter Mozart (Danehill), once dubbed “The
Flying Machine” by The Racing Post.

Super Easy HALLMARK STUD
IF HE’D BEEN AT ONE OF THE BIG STUDS HE COULD HAVE BEEN ANYTHING BUT HE GOT HURT AND DIDN’T DO IT ON THE TRACK SO HE WAS NEVER GOING TO GET THAT MAJOR START- MARK CORCORAN
| 21 |
BY HARRY TROY | @RACINGMACAU
A treble across the weekend’s racing
took Japanese rider Masakazu
(Masa) Tanaka to 17 winners for
the season, and fifth in the jockeys’
rankings, as he attempts to reel in the leading
trio of Luis Corrales, Eric Cheung and Peter Ho.
Tanaka has been in great form since the start of
the Year Of The Ox, with five winners from the
last three meetings in February.
Honey Biscuit (Showcasing) got Tanaka off
the mark on Friday with a hard-fought win over
Rayson Warrior (Redwood) in the 1510-metre
Class 6. On a rain-soaked night on the sand,
Honey Biscuit refused to concede to Rayson
Warrior, who fought stoutly under Peter Ho to
go down by a neck, with Yatholing (Exosphere)
back in third.
While the rain was gone by Saturday, it left
conditions on the turf very soft. That played
right into the hands of six-year-old Fully
Realised (Fully Fledged), who broke his maiden
status under Tanaka in the opening 1200-metre
Class 6.
Also trained by Stephen Chow, Fully
Realised was still a maiden after 21 starts,
with only four placings to his credit. The
perseverance by owner Mr Yeung Kam Wing,
who also races Honey Biscuit, eventually paid
off, with the gelding suited by the soft track.
The soft turf conditions were also a friend
to former Victorian sprinter Golden Key (Pins),
who led throughout under Tanaka to win the
Class 4 over 1200 metres and notch win number
two in the enclave.
Prepared in Macau by Champion trainer
Tony Fung, Golden Key originally kicked off his
career in New Zealand with Jim Collett, where
he had three unplaced runs, before being
shipped to Victoria to the yard of Matthew
Ellerton and Simon Zahra.
From 12 starts in Victoria the gelding won
two races and finished second three times, all
on soft tracks, before being sold to Macau. One
would have thought
the gelding would
be suited to Macau,
where wet tracks are
common, however, in
his 25 runs in Macau,
Golden Key has only
struck five genuinely
wet tracks, resulting
in two wins and three
placings.
Like Golden
Key, Masa Tanaka
has also done his
share of traveling.
After completing his
apprenticeship at
Racing Queensland’s
Apprentice Academy, Tanaka commenced riding
in New Zealand where he competed for a number
of seasons, with a highlight being his Thorndon
Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) victory aboard Booming (Don
Eduardo). Tanaka then set his sights on Korea and
rode more than 150 winners in four seasons there.
Wanting to broaden his horizons, Tanaka
arrived in Macau in January last year. After a
frustrating start, he managed to ride his first winner
in March for trainer Geoff Allendorf aboard Luen
On Success (Lord Kanaloa) and went on to finish
the season in August with 12 winners.
A big break came for Tanaka when he was
asked by former Champion trainer Stanley Chin
to join the stable, sharing the bulk of the rides with
Eric Cheung. After a slow start to the season, he is
now starting to hit his stride and his services are
being utilised by many other trainers.
Former New Zealander Qian Gua (Cape
Blanco) was another that appreciated the wet
conditions and made it three wins over the
1800-metre course in the Class 2 & 3 Handicap
under Breinell Yamzon.
Six-year-old Qian Gua won two races
in New Zealand under the care of Stephen
Autridge and Jamie Richards, as well as placing
five times from his 16 runs there.
There is nothing like a wet track to throw
in an upset, and that’s exactly how things
unfolded in the Class 2 & 3 Handicap over 1500
metres with Electroplate Alloy (Golden Archer)
pulling off a surprise win.
Ridden by Roger Yu and trained by Alan
Tam, Electroplate Alloy loved the very soft
conditions, leading throughout to defeat
favourite Nuclear Fusion (Sebring), with
Victory Moment (Dragon Pulse) back in third.
Five-year-old Electroplate Alloy has been
a great buy for owners Lee Yuen Fat and Lau
Pang, who picked up the gelding for the modest
sum of AU$37,500 at the 2017 Inglis Melbourne
Ready To Race Sale.
After Saturday’s win, his record stands at 28
starts for six wins and 12 seconds.
Both Nuclear Fusion, who raced in
Australia as Mandela, and Beauty Bolt
(Redoute’s Choice), who performed in Group
company in Victoria and ran a creditable fourth
in the VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) at Flemington,
were expected to dominate the race. However,
neither performed to expectations and Nuclear
Fusion got through the conditions well, with
Beauty Bolt beaten seven and quarter lengths
into fifth.

New first season sire winnersAstern - Two of Darley’s first season sires
produced new individual winners on Tuesday
as Seradess (2 f ex Obsidian Dragon by Hidden
Dragon) dead-heated with Cloudy (Frosted)
in a thrilling finish to the Roll The Dice Racing
2YO Fillies Maiden Plate (1000m) at Bendigo. The
former was a first winner for Astern (Medaglia
D’Oro), who won the 2016 Golden Rose Stakes
(Gr 1, 1400m) and was subsequently second in
the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m). Trained
by Mark Kavanagh, Seradess was ridden by Joe
Bowditch who believed he had collared the Jamie
Kah-ridden Cloudy as his mount joined that duo
on the line. "You think you've beaten her (Kah)
and she still gets you," Bowditch told Racing.com.
"She was very green, she took everything in today
and had a good look around, so I would think
she'll improve a lot from that." Bred by Quality
Thoroughbred Breeding Joint Venture, Seradess
was bought by her trainer from the Magic Millions
Gold Coast Yearling Sale, realising $50,000 from
the Mill Park Stud draft. She is the first winner
from the stakes-placed Obsidian Dragon (Hidden
Dragon), who is herself a three-quarter sister to
the Listed scorer Danedina (Danehill Dancer).
Astern covered 72 mares at a fee of $22,000 last
year, while Seradess is one of 112 live foals to have
come from his first crop.
Capitalist - Kalashnikov (2 c ex Rough
Ride by Flying Spur) broke his maiden at the
fourth attempt on Wednesday to provide first
season sire Capitalist (Written Tycoon) with
his sixth individual winner. Trained by Paul
and Peter Snowden, Kalashnikov took out
the CG&E Maiden Plate (1100m) at Gosford
under Jason Collett, defeating Godolphin’s
Raoul (Kermadec) by a long neck. Double Ex
(Exosphere), the $2.70 favourite, was the same
distance behind in third. Kalashnikov is the
second foal out of Flying Spur (Danehill) mare
Rough Ride, who has produced two winners
from two runners. Newgate Farm’s Golden
Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Capitalist
already has a stakes winner to his name
courtesy of Inglis Millennium (RL, 1200m)
winner Profiteer. Capitalist covered 237 mares
in 2020, his fourth season at stud, at a fee of
$44,000 (inc GST).
Frosted - Cloudy’s (2 f ex Applegate by
Exceed and Excel) dead-heat at Bendigo on
Tuesday was the third individual Australian
winner for Darley shuttler Frosted (Tapit).
Trained by James Cummings, the Godolphin
homebred ran third behind stablemate

Ingratiating (Frosted) and General Beau
(Brazen Beau) in the Maribyrnong Trial
(Listed, 1000m) at Flemington on October 3,
while she got off the mark at the fourth time of
asking despite idling under Kah’s urgings. "She
was just wandering around, she just needed
another horse to take us a bit further," Kah
told Racing.com. "When the leader (Audrey
Girl) stopped, she just wanted to do a bit
wrong. The team placed her lovely today, she's
maturing every race. She was a bit fierce last
start and today she was in a really good rhythm
and comfortable. A dead-heat is better than
nothing." Cloudy is a half-sister to last season's
city-placed juvenile Favell (Street Boss),
being out of Ottawa Stakes (Listed, 1000m)
heroine Applegate (Exceed And Excel), who
herself is a half-sister to Summer Cup (Gr 3,
2400m) winner Yulalona (Dubai Destination).
Cloudy joins Ingratiating and Frost Flowers
as southern hemisphere winners for Frosted,
with all three having already achieved black
type. Frosted covered 131 mares at a fee of
$22,000 in 2020, while he is currently standing
at Darley’s Jonabell Farm in Kentucky for a fee
of US$25,000 (approx. AUD$31,650).
Maurice - Maurice (Screen Hero) sired his
second Australian winner in style on Friday as
impressive debutant Mazu (2 c ex Chatelaine
by Flying Spur) led home Conrad (Maurice) in
a 1100-metre Canterbury Maiden to earn the
former Japanese Horse of the Year a quinella.
The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Mazu
showed plenty of promise in a Randwick
trial last week and backed that up with a
commanding front-running performance
under Tommy Berry, who guided Mazu to
a head win over Conrad. Jai Lei (Sebring)
finished one and a quarter lengths back in
third, while hot favourite Forbes (Capitalist)
failed to finish in the picture. Mazu, a
$180,000 Classic Yearling Sale purchase by
Triple Crown Syndications, could be put on a
path to the Golden Slipper, with the training
partnership set to make a plan depending on
how Mazu pulls up over the coming days. He
is the fourth winner out of Chatelaine (Flying
Spur) and is a half-brother to Coolmore Stud
Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Headway (Charge
Forward). Maurice, who shuttled to Arrowfield
for three seasons between 2017-2019, is the
sire of Japanese stakes winner Pixie Night. He
stands at Shadai Stallion Station for a fee of
8,000,000 JPY (approx. AU$100,000) in 2021.
Shalaa - Cheerful Legend (2 c ex Jemison
by Commands) broke his maiden at the
third attempt in the 1200-metre two-year-
old handicap at Moonee Valley on Friday to
provide Arrowfield shuttler Shalaa (Invincible
Spirit) with his third Australian winner. The
John Sadler-trained colt cruised to a two-
length win over the James Cummings-trained
Micro (Medaglia D'Oro), with Treporti (I Am
Invincible) another two and a half lengths back
in third. Cheerful Legend is a half-brother to
dual Hong Kong Group 1 winner Contentment
(Hussonet) and is the fourth winner from
four runners for Commands (Danehill) mare
Jemison. Shalaa, the sire of Breeders’ Plate (Gr
3, 1000m) and Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL,
1200m) winner Shaquero, is currently standing
at Haras de Bouquetot in France for a €15,000
(approx AUD$23,300) stud fee.
New Group/Grade 1 winnersAll Too Hard - Vinery Stud's All Too Hard
(Casino Prince) brought up his third individual
Group 1 winner as Forbidden Love (3 f ex Juliet's
Princess by More Than Ready) burst through
late to claim the Surround Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m)
at Randwick on Saturday. A $150,000 purchase
for Richard Freedman at the Magic Millions
Gold Coast Yearling Sale in 2020, Forbidden
Love is out of the stakes-placed Juliet's Princess
(More Than Ready), who has a colt by Epaulette
(Commands) at foot and was served by All Too
Hard in 2020. All Too Hard stood for $27,500 in
2020.
Captain Of All - Group 1-winning sprinter
Captain Of All (Captain Al) became a Group
1-winning stallion after his son Linebacker (3
g ex Thin Red Line by Redoute’s Choice) took
out Saturday’s Cape Derby (Gr 1, 2000m) at
Kenilworth. Trained by Vaughan Marshall,
the gelding was winning for the second time
in six starts as he beat favourite Rascallion
(Vercingetorix) by a length and a half. The
Gatekeeper (Dynasty) was another half a length
away in third. Linebacker is out of the Group
3-placed Thin Red Line (Redoute’s Choice).
Captain Of All stands at Klawervlei Stud for a
fee of R10,000 (approx. AUD$850).

Foxwedge - In a shock victory, Lunar Fox
(3 c ex Grant's Moon by Malibu Moon) became
a fifth Group 1 winner for Foxwedge (Fastnet
Rock) in the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m)
at Flemington on Saturday. Lunar Fox was
a $40,000 purchase by TKO Racing from the
Inglis Melbourne Gold Yearling Sale in 2019.
His dam, Grant's Moon (Malibu Moon), died
in September last year, and has a yearling filly
by Frosted (Tapit). Foxwedge stood the 2020
breeding season at Woodside Park Stud for a
fee of $11,000.
New stakes winnersAzamour - The Graham Richardson and
Rogan Norvall-trained Paisley Park (6 g Musical
Magic by Mozart) took out the Kaimai Stakes
(Listed, 2000m) at Matamata on Saturday to
provide the late Azamour (Night Shift) with
his 43rd individual stakes winner. Fourth in
the Taranaki Cup (Gr 3, 1800m) at his last start,
Paisley Park shot to the front rounding the home
turn before holding out all challenges to win by
half a length from Central Districts visitor Pep
Torque (Nadeem). Yatima (Savabeel) was the
same margin adrift in third. “He is a true mile
and a quarter horse, so it suited him perfectly
today,” Richardson said. “Wiremu (Pinn, jockey)
followed instructions to the letter as we wanted
him to give him a dig out of the gates and race
handy. He had to go early and thankfully he did
that, as it was the winning of the race. I haven’t
got any plans for him and will just let this all
sink in as we celebrate tonight.” He continued:
“The two wins today have given me one of the
biggest thrills I’ve ever had in life. I’ve won races
like the Matamata Cup here on my home track
but there is just something special about taking
out the feature event the club has and winning
another big one, all on the same day.”
Bodemeister - Arkansas Derby (Gr 1, 9f)
winner Bodemeister (Empire Maker) took his
tally of individual stakes winners to 20 when
Wholebodemeister (3 f ex Wholelottashakin
by Scat Daddy) scored for the third time in
seven starts by taking out Gulfstream’s Davona
Dale Stakes (Gr 2, 1m) on Saturday. Sent off
an unfancied 52-1 chance, the Juan Carlos
Avila-trained filly belied her odds as she came
home six and a half lengths clear of her nearest
pursuer, Crazy Beautiful (Liam’s Map), who
in turn was another length and a half clear of
third-placed Competitive Speed (Competitive
Edge). Wholebodemeister is the sole winner
from two starters for her dam Wholelottashakin
(Scat Daddy), who produced an Arrogate
(Unbridled’s Song) colt this year and a Union
Rags (Dixie Union) filly in 2020. Bodemeister
stands at the Jockey Club Of Turkey’s farm for
€12,500 (approx. AUD$19,585).
Capitalist - Capitalist (Written Tycoon)
became the first freshman sire to reach two
stakes winners for the season after Tycoon
Humma (2 f ex Humma Mumma by Bel
Esprit) came with a powerful finish to claim
the Very Special Kids Plate (Listed, 1000m)
at Flemington on Saturday. Trained by John
McArdle, Tycoon Humma was a $240,000
purchase for Redgum Racing from the Inglis
Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale in 2020. She
is a half-sister to Group 3 winner and Saturday’s
Bob Hoystead Handicap (Listed, 1000m) third
Humma Humma (Denman) and has a yearling
half-sister by Zoustar (Northern Meteor), who
will go through the ring as Lot 87 during today’s
opening session of the Premier auction. Tycoon
Humma defeated the Godolphin-raced Kallos
(Medaglia D'Oro) by a head, with Wanaroo
(Wandjina) a further length and a half back
in third. Capitalist, who stood last season at
Newgate Farm for $44,000, tops the first season
sire charts from Shalaa (Invincible Spirit) and
barnmate Flying Artie (Artie Schiller). He is
also the sire of Inglis Millennium (RL, 1100m)
winner and Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1,
1200m) favourite Profiteer.
Constitution - Florida Derby (Gr 1, 9f)
winner Constitution (Tapit) sired his 16th
individual stakes winner when his son Annex
(3 c ex You Make Me Sing by Unbridled’s Song)
made it two wins from as many starts with a
victory in the Palm Tree Stakes (Listed, 8.5f) at
Gulfstream on Saturday. Trained by Bill Mott,
the colt followed up his debut win at the same
track when beating Scarlett Sky (Sky Mesa) by
a head. Chess’s Dream (Jess’s Dream) was a
length and three-quarters further behind in
third. Bred in Kentucky by William Harrigan
and Mike Pietrangelo, Annex was a private
purchase after he failed to meet his reserve
when consigned by Lane's End to the 2019
Foxwedge WOODSIDE PARK STUD
Keeneland September Yearling Sale. He is the
third foal and the only winner from three to
race out of You Make Me Sing (Unbridled’s
Song), who produced an Honor Code (A.P.
Indy) colt in 2019 and an Honor Code filly in
2020. She was bred to Mitole (Eskendereya) for
2021. Constitution stands at WinStar Farm in
Kentucky for $85,000 (approx. AUD$110,315).
Dubawi - Naval Crown (3 c ex Come Alive
by Dansili) looks destined for better things
after running out a commanding winner
of the Meydan Classic (Listed, 1600m) on
Thursday night, providing Darley’s super sire
Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) with his 197th
individual stakes winner in the process. Sent
into an immediate lead by Mikael Barzalona,
the Charlie Appleby-trained colt never saw
another rival as he cruised home under a hands
a heels ride, crossing the line a length and three
quarters in front of his better fancied stablemate
Master Of The Seas (Dubawi). Yurman (Asiatic
Boy) was another eight lengths away in third.
The winner caught the eye of the northern
hemisphere bookmakers who made him a
25-1 chance for Newmarket’s 2,000 Guineas
(Gr 1, 1m). Naval Crown is the first foal out of
the Listed winning Dansili (Danehill) mare
Come Alive and is from the further family of last
year’s Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) winner
Colette (Hallowed Crown). Dubawi once again
stands at Dalham Hall Stud for a fee of £250,000
(approx. AUD$444,300) this year.
Fastnet Rock - Chris Waller has unearthed
another talented juvenile in his armoury thanks
to O’President (2 c ex O'Marilyn by O'Reilly),
who built on the promise of his four-length
win at Canterbury last month when taking out
the Skyline Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick
on Saturday. The victory provided Coolmore
stalwart Fastnet Rock (Danehill) with his 170th
individual stakes winner, while the stallion
enjoyed a quinella as the Team Hawkes-trained
Hilal finished a length a quarter adrift in second.
Capitvant (Capitalist) was the same margin away
in third. A $520,000 purchase from the Inglis
Australian Easter Sale for James Bester Bloodstock
from the Kia Ora Stud draft, O’President is the
second winner from Group 1-winning juvenile
O’Marilyn (O’Reilly). O’Marilyn is herself a half-
sister to top-tier winners Headturner (Anabaa)
and Anacheeva (Anabaa) as well as Group 2
winner Kroner (Viking Ruler), being from the blue
hen Monroe Magic (Zabeel).
Ghostzapper - Fearless (5 g ex And Why
Not by Street Cry) maintained his unblemished
record at Gulfstream Park when landing the
Gulfstream Park Mile Stakes (Gr 2, 1m) on
Saturday to provide Ghostzapper (Awesome
Again) with his 82nd individual stakes winner.
The five-year-old gelding, who was having
his first start in eight months, made it three
from three at the Florida track when defeating
Avant Garde (Tonalist) by three-quarters of a
length. Performer (Speightstown) was another
two lengths back in third. A half brother to the
stakes winner Just Whistle (Pioneerof The Nile),
Fearless was offered at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton
July Horses of Racing Age Sale but went unsold
for $120,000. He is the second stakes winner
of the three offspring of And Why Not (Street
Cry) to race to date. Ghostzapper stands at Hill
'N Dale Farms in Kentucky $85,000 (approx.
AUD$110,300).
Goldencents - Phantom Currency (5 g
ex Phantom Rising by Mr Greeley) provided
Goldencents (Into Mischief) with his tenth
individual stakes winner when landing
Gulfstream’s Mac Diarmida Stakes (Gr 2, 11f)
on Saturday. The Brian Lynch-trained five-year-
old defeated favourite Tide Of The Sea (English
Channel) by three-quarters of a length, with
Moon Over Miami (Malibu Moon) another half
a length back in third. The win was a fifth in 13
starts for Phantom Currency, who two starts
previously had finished down the field in the
Clark Stakes (Gr 1, 9f) at Churchill Downs. Bred
in Kentucky by Sally Thomas and New Dawn
Stable, Phantom Currency became the first
stakes winner for the mare Phantom Rising (Mr.
Greeley), who has three winners from her five
foals to race. Goldencents, the sire of multiple
Grade 2 winner By My Standards, stands at
Spendthrift’s US base for $15,000 (approx.
AUD$19,500).
Iffraaj - Forest Of Dean (5 g ex Forest
Crown by Royal Applause) reversed the form
with his old rival Felix (Lope De Vega) to take
out the Winter Derby (Gr 3, 1m 2f) at Lingfield
on Saturday, handing Iffraaj (Zafonic) his 75th
individual stakes winner. The John Gosden-

a long absence this winter, including when

that run again under a canny tactical ride by
Rab Havlin, who stole a march on his four rivals
entering the straight and was never in danger
thereafter. Felix ran second, beaten three-quarters
of a length, while the progressive Father Of Jazz
(Kingman), who returned the 6-4 favourite, was
another length back in third. Now the winner of
five of his 13 starts, Forest Of Dean is the fourth
foal out of the winning mare Forest Crown (Royal
Applause), who herself is a half-sister to Racing
Post Trophy (Gr 1, 1m) winner Crowded House
(Rainbow Quest). Iffraaj had earlier sired his
74th individual stakes winner when Western
Empire secured the Lex Piper Stakes (Listed,
1600m) at Ascot. The Grant and Alana Williams-
trained three-year-old ran fourth in the Western
Australian Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) in November,
while he had previously been Listed-placed on
three further occasions, but he secured his day in
the sun with a resounding five and a half-length
win over Flash Ducati (Blackfriars). Castillio Del
Lago (Alfred Nobel) was a further neck back in
third.
Manhattan Rain - Manhattan Rain (Encosta
De Lago) sired his 16th individual stakes winner
on Saturday when Hail Manhattan (4 g Beggin
by Benicio) took out the Tattersall's Member's
Cup (Listed, 1600m) at the Sunshine Coast.
The Peter and Will Hulbert-trained winner
finished three-quarters of a length to the good
of David Vandyke’s Dissolution (Snitzel), with
Sir Barnabus (Rothesay) a further neck back
in third. Hail Manhattan was winning for the
sixth time in 18 starts, albeit for the first time in
black-type company, and he has now won all
three outings in February.
Moshe - Former Sun Stud resident Moshe
(Bel Esprit) sired his second stakes winner
as Mosh Music (6 m ex Dirt Music by Jeune)
stamped her credentials for the Adelaide Cup
(Gr 2, 3200m) on Monday by taking out the Roy
Higgins Quality (Listed, 2600m) at Flemington
on Saturday. Trained by Archie Alexander, Mosh
Music bounced back from a disappointing last-
start seventh in the Moonee Valley Night Cup
(Listed, 2500m) - in which she pulled a shoe -
to beat Sin To Win (Sir Percy) by a length and a
quarter, with another three-quarters of a length
to Stars Of Carrum (Fiorente) in third place.
"We saw the nominations for this race and they
didn't look overly strong, but even though it
wasn't in our plan - we were supposed to go
(direct) to the Adelaide Cup - we took a little
diversion and we'll be going to the Adelaide
Cup now,” Alexander said. Winning jockey Mark
Zahra, who will retain the ride at Morphettville,
added: “I reckon she'll stay. In the run today
I barely touched the bridle the whole way.
She was so relaxed and when I needed her to
quicken, she did.” Moshe, a brother to Black
Caviar, was exported to Indonesia in 2019.
Sea The Stars - Sea The Stars (Cape Cross)
registered his 74th individual stakes winner
courtesy of a victory by his son Star Safari (5 g
ex Intimhir by Muhtathir) in Meydan’s Dubai
Millennium Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) on Thursday.
The Charlie Appleby-trained gelding was
winning for the fourth time in seven starts as
he beat Bedouin’s Story (Farhh) by a length
and a quarter. Halimi (Teofilo) was a further
length back in third. Star Safari is the first foal
out of French winner Intimhir (Muhtathir),
who herself is out of a winning sister to German
Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winners Schiaparelli
(Monsun) and Samum (Monsun). Sea The Stars
stands at Gilltown Stud in Ireland for a fee of
€150,000 (approx. AUD$230,770).
Snitzel - Arrowfield Stud stallion Snitzel
(Redoute’s Choice) recorded a new stakes
double across the Tasman on Saturday, with
Sword Of State (2 c ex In the Vanguard by
Encosta De Lago) becoming his 108th individual
stakes winner when producing a commanding
performance to take out the Waikato Stud
Slipper (Gr 3, 1200m). The result followed the
win of Four Moves Ahead in the Sweet Embrace
Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick, who was the
107th individual stakes winner for the stallion.
Third in the Eclipse Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m)
second time out on New Year’s Day, the Jamie
Richards-trained Sword Of State produced a
clear career best when downing stablemate and
Karaka 2YO Million (RL, 1200m) winner On The
Bubbles (Brazen Beau) by six and a half lengths
on Saturday. Dragon Biscuit (Choisir) was a
further half a length away in third.
Sea The Stars AGA KHAN STUDS
Street Cry - The front running Volcanic
Sky (6 g ex Short Skirt by Diktat) did just
enough under Frankie Dettori to land the
Nad Al Sheba Trophy (Gr 3, 2800m) at
Meydan on Thursday and become the 132nd
individual stakes winner for the late Street
Cry (Machiavellian). Now the winner of four
of his 19 starts, Volcanic Sky clung on from the
fast finishing Global Heat (Toronado) to score
by a short head. Brilliant Light (Sea The Stars)
made it a 1-2-3 for Saeed bin Suroor, finishing
a length and a quarter behind the winner in
third. Volcanic Sky is one of five winners out
of Epsom Oaks (Gr 1, 1m 4f ) third Short Skirt
(Diktat), who herself was successful in Group
3 company twice. Street Cry soon moved his
tally to 133 when Zainhom (7 g ex Kaseema
by Storm Cat) overcame a seemingly
disadvantageous draw in stall 14 to strike in
the Meydan Challenge (Listed, 1400m). The
Shadwell homebred was winning for just the
third time in 32 starts.
Super Easy - Super Easy (Darci Brahma)
sired his sixth individual stakes winner on
Saturday when Bonny Lass maintained her
unbeaten record to take out the Matamata
Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m). A comfortable
debut victory at the same track back in January
saw the Graham Richardson and Rogan Norvall-
trained youngster installed a warm $2.10
favourite for the race and she didn’t disappoint
under a heady ride by Craig Grylls, who brought
up a winning treble on the day with the success.
The fast-finishing Fonsalette (Belardo) grabbed
second, beaten three-quarters of a length,
with Beldarra (Hinchinbrook) a further neck
back in third. “She is just so professional and
she is tough,” Richardson said. “She actually
lost her back legs at the start, so to pick herself
up and get into the position she did was quite
remarkable. When she was in front, I was
looking for Lance O’Sullivan’s filly (Novashow)
as I thought she was the horse to beat. I was just
hoping we had enough to hold them all out and
thankfully we did.”
Tavistock - Hot favourite Solaia (Toronado)
could only muster second in Saturday’s Ascot
1,000 Guineas (Listed, 1800m) as Brave Angel
(3 f ex Svita by Success Express) claimed top
honours to provide late Cambridge Stud stallion
Tavistock (Montjeu) with his 27th individual
stakes winner. Solaia was sent off the $1.60
market leader having won the Challenge Stakes
(Listed, 1500m) on February 13, but it was $21
chance Brave Angel who posted a career best for
trainer Simon Miller and jockey Peter Knuckey,
turning around a four-length deficit with Solaia
having run sixth in the Challenge herself. She
had earlier finished third in the Champion
Fillies Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) on November 14.
Pure Devotion (So You Think) finished a further
length adrift in third, leading home a 3-4-5 for
Grant and Alana Williams. Tavistock died in
December 2019 having suffered complications
from an injury he had earlier sustained in a
field and he is best known as the sire of Group 1
winners Volkstok’n’barrell and Werther.
The United States - The United States
(Galileo), a Group 1-winning brother to the
high-class fillies Hermosa and Hydrangea,
got his stud career off to the dream start on
Saturday when Drakenstein Stud's homebred
Sheela (2 f ex Trip To India by Trippi) made a
winning debut in the Storm Bird Stakes (Listed,
1000m) at Turffontein in South Africa. The filly
is out of Trip To India (Trippi) hailing from the
family of European Group 1 winners such as
Continent (Lake Coniston) and Zambezi Sun
(Dansili). The globe-trotter began his racing
career with Aidan O'Brien in Ireland before he
transferred to the stable of Robert Hickmott to
race for Nick and Lloyd Williams. He added his
name to Galileo's 89 Group/Grade 1 winners
when landing the 2016 running of the Ranvet
Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m).
Zebedee - Progressive sprinter Lord
Riddiford (6 g ex Beacon Of Hope by Barathea)
took his form to new heights with a gutsy
success in the Hever Sprint Stakes (Listed,
5f) at Lingfield on Saturday, becoming the
12th individual stakes winner for late Tally Ho
Stud resident Zebedee (Invincible Spirit). In a
strongly-run affair, Lord Riddiford stalked the
pace-setting Ornate (Bahamian Bounty) before
pouncing in the straight. He fended off the
sustained late challenge of the favourite Moss
Gill (No Nay Never) by a neck. Blue De Vega
(Lope De Vega) was a further three-quarters of
a length adrift in third. Lord Riddiford has now
won nine of his 34 starts for prize-money of
£134,742 (approx. AUD$243,500).
