Stories from Around the World

Foreword Thank you for taking time to come down and watch the talents of our P2 pupils. We truly hope you will be entertained with a great performance by the children. Drama is more than just about putting up a good play. In the process of learning and rehearsing, the children have developed a strong character and acquired useful skills that will help them even beyond the stage. They have been given a platform for creative expression that exercises their imagination and at the same time have gained more confidence, independence and an awareness of speech clarity that they will bring with them outside the classroom. The theme for today’s show is stories from around the world. Let your imagination soar as we travel across the globe, from Europe, to Asia, to the Middle East to discover tales of old and new. These stories will transport you to different lands where you’ll explore different cultures and exciting adventures that will keep you entertained throughout the show.

Synopses

Chika & The Treasure (2B) We begin our journey in Africa. A long time ago, the world did not know what a story was. A selfish giant had kept all the stories of the world in a magical box which he carried with him wherever he went. He knew how amazing and precious stories were, and wanted to have them all to himself. A curious little spider named Zola stumbled upon the giant who was sitting under a tree one day. Zola observed the giant carefully as he looked into the box and enjoyed one story after another. Zola was so intrigued by the box that he decided to steal it while the giant was asleep that night. Out on the wide starry African plains, Zola lifted the lid of the box and released a wonderful collection of stories from all over the world. The Greedy Rats (2E) This is a modern tale all the way from Europe. A bunch of rats consider themselves kings of the highways of England as they ride around on their motorbikes and terrorise anyone who crosses their path. Innocent animals fear passing through the highway because as soon as they do, they will be stopped by the ferocious rats who steal their food, leaving them with nothing. Guardians of Akaishi (2H) This story brings us back to old Japan where the villagers of Mount Akaishi were preparing for their annual festivities to usher in the New Year. Among the villagers lived Osami and his son Yahiko. Osami made and sold paper umbrellas for a living. He decided to sell some extra umbrellas in town one morning so that he could buy rice cakes for his son to enjoy for the New Year. However, none of the people in the town wanted to buy his umbrellas that morning. On his way home, Osami encountered a bunch of old traditional scarecrows called Kakashis. Seeing the Kakashis all covered in thick snow, Osami gave up his umbrellas to them for protection from an impending storm. His kind deed did not go unnoticed.

Synopses The Silly Dingoes (2A) Out in the Australian outback, three hungry dingoes caught a wombat and decided to make Wombat Stew. As they were busy brewing up their gooey chewy stew, other animals came by to suggest more ingredients for them to add to their stew. The greedy dingoes agreed to adding mud, flies and creepy crawlies, not realizing that the animals were trying to stall and trick them out of cooking their friend the wombat. The dingoes were in for a nasty surprise when it was finally time to taste their stew. The Six Blind Men of Indostan (2C) A group of wise blind men from Indostan debate and argue over what best describes an animal that none of them can see. No one concedes to being wrong in this battle of wits and so they go on arguing, not realising that while each is partly right, all of them cannot be further from the truth of what an elephant really is! Never Break a Promise (2F) The town of Samarkhand is plagued by rats, hundreds of them, which make life miserable for the townspeople. Help comes in the form of a stranger who promises to rid the town of the pesky rats for a considerable fee, which the Sheik agrees to pay. The Rat Catcher fulfills his end of the bargain but the Sheik does not. As a result, the whole town pays an even bigger price that will break their hearts. The Real Cowboy (2G) Slim was a young Texan cowboy who constantly got teased and bullied by the other cowboys in the range because he lacked the skills and experience of being a true blue cowboy. However, he did have a special gift. He could write and recite amazing poems which could calm even the wildest of beasts. Sadly, his talent went unseen and unappreciated. That is, until a grave danger approached the cowboys one day as they were moving a herd of cattle. The cowboys were in for a rude awakening as Slim stood up to save the day with his fancy words. The Mountain Keepers (2D) A long time ago, there was a great famine that plagued the animals that lived deep in one of the thick forests of Indonesia. The animals were so hungry their tummies hurt. Legend has it that there was a magical tree in the forest which would grow juicy, tasty fruit if a special word was called out. But nobody knew what the word was. Some of the animals took turns to journey to the mountain to ask the wise Mountain Keepers, but in their hurry back to the forest, they had forgotten the word. Finally, Tiny Tortoise volunteered to go to the mountain. None of the animals had confidence in him, but Tiny Tortoise surprised them all.
