• Sub-sea level basin or lake

• California's largest lake

• Massive flooding caused by the Colorado River in 1905

• Because there is no outlet for the water, evaporation has made the water salty over time

HOW IS THE SALTON SEA USED?

• Agricultural drainage and run-off

• In the 1950’s the lake was stocked with fish, creating a popular fishing hole

• Over 380 species of birds visit the sea while migrating

• Many endangered species make their home here

What kind of problems do you think the chemical run-off into the Salton Sea can cause? How does it affect the wild life?

ABOUT THE GREAT SALT LAKE

• Largest natural lake west of the Mississippi River

• High salt concentration because there is no outlet for water; water evaporates and leaves salt behind

• The water is too salty for fish and aquatic wild life to survive (with the exception of algae, a special kind of shrimp and some flies!)

• You cannot sink in the Great Salt Lake!

ABOUT THE MOJAVE DESSERT

• Named after the Mohave Native Americans

• Desert climate

• Driest and smallest American desert

• Receives less than 15 cm of precipitation per year

• Despite hot temps and little water a variety of plants and animals here

• A series of cattle trails about 800 miles long

• Named after Scot-Cherokee trader Jesse Chisholm

• After the Civil War, long horn cattle were abundant and herded along these trails to be relocated

• Herds as large as 10,000 were driven from Texas to Kansas

• Historically known for its steel industry

• Andrew Carnegie founded the Edgar Thomson Steel Works, which later became known as Carnegie Steel Company

• By 1857 Pittsburgh’s 1,000 factories burned 22 million bushels of coal annually

• During WWII Pittsburgh produced 95 million tons of steel

• The town was started as a tavern owned by Samuel Gettys founded in 1786

• Known for the Gettysburg Battlefield where the Battle of Gettysburg was fought during the Civil War

• Battle of Gettysburg was responsible for the largest number of causalities in the Civil War

• The Battle of Gettysburg was also the known as the turning point of the war, ending Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s invasion of the North

• Home of the first powered flight in 1903 by the Wright Brothers

• The Wright Brothers made four successful flights on December 17, 1903

• The longest flight made that day was 59 seconds long and covered 859 feet!

• After the Wright Brothers’ flights at Kitty Hawk, it would be two more years and two more designs before the first practical airplane was created

• Located on the island of Oahu, HI

• On Sunday morning December 7, 1941 Japanese warplanes attacked the United States Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor

• This is the event that forced the U.S. into World War II

• 2,403 U.S. soldiers were killed and 1,104 were wounded as a result of the attack on Pearl Harbor

• The confederacy was founded at Montgomery in Feb. 1861 and was known as the confederate capital

• The Tuskegee Institute was founded in 1881 by Booker T. Washington and Dr. George Washington Carver

• In the 1950’s and 60’s Montgomery was home to civil-rights actions like the bus boycott from 1955-956 and the Freedom March in 1965

• The Civil Rights movement began the day Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat for a white passenger in 1955

Do you think the Civil Rights movement would have been as successful without the actions of people like Rosa Parks?
