The season is almost half over already. I guess whoever said time fl ies when you are having fun must have had Sandy Pines in mind. Members are out golfi ng, using their remote control cars on all levels of tracks, enjoying the ropes course and its additions, the bike course, bocce, and all the other “regular stuff” we have to make us the “best of the best” parks. We have an election coming up and we need good people to fi ll the empty positions on the Board so come to the “Meet the Candidates” and then get out and vote. Since its Sandy Pines and we are not much different than other small towns, we have to deal with the stories, gossip, and/or “rumors” that go round. If you hear a story, do not necessarily assume it is true. Assumptions and a lack of dialogue can only increase the mystery and increase friction among the members. We, the Administra-tion, the Board, and the members, need to communicate facts if we want to avoid confl ict. Do your part. As we indicated in last months Footprints, please do the following: When you hear a story, check it out; do not just pass it on as the gospel truth. Let’s all do our part in keeping the rumor mill to a minimum. Get out and enjoy the rest of the season with the friends and ac-quaintances you have made here at the Park. Take advantage of all the available activities and have FUN.

Our Independence Day Parade will be on Saturday, July 7 at3 pm. If you wish to participate, please line up at the Rec-

reation Station at 2:15. TheScottville Clown Band will be joining us this year and will put on a Comedy Showat the Chapel at 5 pm.

Where does the time go? It seems we were just working on plans to turn off the water and work on winter projects. Now, in a short time we will turn the water back on and fi nish spring projects!

Fourth of July. What a great time at Sandy Pines! We have one of the best parades around. This year, the Scottville Clown Band will be joining us. Please decorate your carts, bikes and family members, and join us for a great time. We will also have our outstanding Fireworks Display. We ask you to please follow our rules and not bring fi reworks into the Park. If you have been following news ac-counts of recent house fi res, grass fi res and forest fi res, many of them have been started because of the use of fi reworks. It is a scary situation to have a fi re at Sandy Pines. We have had one grass fi re already due to illegal fi reworks. One is enough. The new Dog Park, BMX Bike Course and the Bocce Courts are being used by

many of you. The Tot Center has been a wonderful place for Grandmas and Grandpas to bring the little ones. We are working on a ‘Name the Bears’ contest. We have six bears around Sandy Pines, and they need names. Please check the Weekend Flyer for contest rules and how to enter. Please enjoy your summer and be safe. Please make sure the young drivers at your site understand what safety with a golf cart is all about.

I know what Sandy Pines was then (we enjoyed it) and we know what it is now. It keeps getting better year after year thanks to the

quality leadership that has been given both by paid staff and many volunteers. I am willing to use my gifts/skills to do my part to keep this park moving in a positive, creative, fi scally responsible direction while being sensitive to the needs of the several generations who enjoy our park. My career has been a variety of opportunities. I’m a retired Re-formed Church in America pastor, having served churches in Clymer, New York; Westland, MI; and Or-lando, FL, over a span of 27 years. I’ve also been a school bus driver; a family service counselor and an usher for the city of Orlando Ven-ues, most notably, The Orlando Magic. Each of my jobs has re-quired special administrative and people skills. My desire is to use the leadership skills I’ve learned in each of my jobs to be the best board member I can be. I have served Sandy Pines al-ready by preaching at the chapel and am serving by working with the Thursday morning volunteers and along with my wife am cleaning CC#2. I look forward to serving as one of your board of directors. My immediate family is my de-voted wife Ellen for 47 years, a son and two daughters, all married and avid associate members. We have ten grandchildren ranging in age from 17 years to 1 year of age. They all love to spend as much time as possible at Sandy Pines and love to introduce the park to their friends. My sister and brother in law Marlene and Wayne Hinken have been members in the park for many years. If you choose to vote for me and I am elected, I will be humbled. You will not be disappointed. A word of thanks to our Sandy Pines Park RangersMemorial Day ended up having a “bloody end” to it when a very large grilling knife cut the top of my foot, and stopping the bleeding was an issue. Thanks to a helpful husband, and two Park Rangers who kept their cool and applied their medic training, the bleeding was stopped, the foot was properly bandaged and then I was helped into our vehicle. A trip to the hospital and stitches were avoided, I believe, due to the care and evaluation given. So, thank you to our Sandy Pines Park Rangers for being there in my time of need and for keeping all of us safe. I appreciate what you did for me! Sincerely, Chari Brink, D116

Thank you to our wonderful Ranger and Maintenance Staff. They all did a great job over the Memo-rial Day Weekend. You are appreciated! Jim & Karyl Childs

Your Board of Directors is always looking to improve communication with our membership. The rumor mill has been active at Sandy Pines for many years. We have found that the majority of these rumors are not only false, but can be destructive to the morale of the Park. We would like to solicit help from our membership. When you hear a rumor, we request that you inform the Board, in writing, even if you know the rumor to be false. Please contact us by using the e-mail address [email protected]. We will use this column to clarify misconceptions. Your Board will also address any issues at our monthly public board meetings. Thank you for your help with keeping Sandy Pines the best it can be.

PARK RANGER NEWS by Steve Deyarmond

Park Inspector News by Don Weiss

Thank you! As a new season at Sandy Pines begins, we would like to thank you in advance for your help in keeping your Park clean. As you take leisurely strolls around the Park, many of you stop to pick up trash and papers that have been dropped along the roadside, or has blown into the Green Areas. We realize that it would not be possible to keep the Park in such beautiful condition without your help, so we want to recognize you and say ‘thanks’ for taking the time to keep your Park beautiful. Have a great season!

While cleaning sites, I have noticed that some people are still dumping leaves from their sites into the green area. If you are caught doing this, you will receive a fi ne, and be charged the cost of having the area cleaned up. If you own a retired site you are required to clean it as well. In the last week I have caught a few people re-shingling roofs without a permit. Please remember that a permit is required for this project, to avoid any fi nes. I have been advised that next years date for lot clean-ups and equipment cleaning will be changing to June 1st. I know this is a long way off, so I will periodically keep reminding everyone. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at 616-896-7286 [email protected] .

Ranger Reminders:

Bicycles:Please observe the same rules as vehicles while operating your bike in the Park.

Texting and Driving:Please do not test and drive. The Park does not permit texting while driving and a violation will be issued if you are found doing this in the Park.

Flotation devices:Please provide properly sized fl otation devices for children and teens while boating. Safety is always our fi rst concern, and we want everyone to be safe while enjoying time on the lake.

Swim Areas:Please supervise your children at swim areas. Do not rely on siblings to watch over a swimming child.

They are making a return visit for a 7 pm performance at the Pavilion. These gals are also known as the Grand Rapids Chorus.NOW on to The Cardboard Boat Race. New date this year is July 29. I need captains to register your boat and start building. The new date allows for our college bound sailors to make a lasting impression on all of us. Don’t forget the new class of boats that you can build on race day starting at 8:30 in the morning and be ready to sail at 1 pm. I will provide the Cardboard and Duct tape, you supply the design and labor. How good are you? This class is designed for all sizes of boat crews, singles, families, clubs and groups. Check with the Recreation Dept and get registered today. Don’t miss out on the fun.

I hope that you are taking advantage of all that Sandy Pines has to offer you! Check out some of the things going on in your Park: The Golf Lessons are going great! You may join in anytime without registration. We meet at the Golf Course every week. Please check the Summer Activities Schedule for the time your group meets. The June 20 version of our Potluck Dinner featured the theme called “DERBY NIGHT.” We were entertained by Sandy Pines’ own Nancee Jelsma, who is the 2012 Kentucky Derby Famous Hat Contest winner! She explained the complicated process involved with the design and construction of the more than 8,000 hats that are entered into the competition each year. This is the second time Nancee has claimed the top spot in this world wide competition. Thanks Nancee, for an enjoyable and entertaining night. Also featured as part of the evening’s events was our own Sandy Pines Hat contest. The winner was Marcia Phelps. Congrats, Marcia! The night fi nished with a four horse race. Victory was claimed by a horse named “MaxiMillion”
