Our goal is for students and staff to learn more about specific disabilies and grow in our knowledge and understanding about Ausm. Here is a brief meline of laws created to support exceponal students: In 1975, The Educaon for All Handi- capped Children Act is passed, providing for free and appropriate public educaon, individualized educaon plans, due process hearings, and edu- caon in the least restricve environment possible. In 1997, The Individu- als with Disabilies Educaon Act (IDEA) includes individuals with brain injury and ausm with procedural safeguards, early intervenon, pre- school services, and teacher training. Florida legislators enact Disability History and Awareness Weeks, beginning in October 2008. April became Ausm Awareness Month. Most recently in 2008, The Higher Educaon Opportunity Act expands eligibility for Pell Grants and other need-based aid for students with intellectual disabilies to pursue postsecondary edu- caon.
