Education Week A sincere thank you to all of the members of our amazing school community with your willingness to support this year’s Education Week celebrations. It truly was wonderful to see the children proudly embrace this year’s theme of “Celebrating Careers” and the various activities throughout our school. Please refer to Mr. Edward’s piece that further explores what occurred. The table below and associated photographs depict what some of the children completed as part of their Education Week home learning and their future career aspirations. I hope everyone enjoys them.

30th May 2019 Term 2, Issue 08

Ria (Year 3) is an avid singer and recently she competed in the Fast Track singing competition and sang the song, “Freedom” by Pharrel Williams. She competed against 10 other children and has subsequently qualified for the semi-finals. At this point in time Ria is not sure where or when the next round will be held however she is busily practicing singing the Eurovision song “I’m not your toy.” Naturally this is an amazing achievement and we look forward to hearing how Ria goes at the next stage – well done and congratulations Ria as we are all extremely proud of you! Lost Property It is quite saddening to see the number of parents and children at the lost property tubs on a regular basis and quite frustrating when jumpers, hats etc are not returned because they are not named. Please ensure all school uniform is named so it can be returned to its rightful owner. A poem to complete my section of this fortnight’s newsletter Recently a friend sent me this beautiful poem, it certainly connected with me both as an educator and parent, I trust it does with you too:

WOOLWORTHS EARN AND LEARN

Once again our school would like to invite families to contribute towards the Woolworths Earn and Learn program which essentially involves collecting one sticker for every ten dollars spent at Woolworths and donating them to our school. The collection box is located near the main office and your stickers can be 'posted' here. The stickers will then be converted to points which we will use to purchase additional resources for our school such as sporting equipment. The Woolworths Earn and Learn program operates between May 1st and 25th June. Thank you for supporting our school and we look forward to receiving lots of Earn and Learn stickers! If you have any queries about this program please see Mr Catalano or myself.

HELPING YOUR CHILD MAKE AND KEEP FRIENDS

My son Henry is 3½ years old and a very sensitive soul. He attends day care two days a week and has just started coming home with friend troubles. I am really pleased that this article has come across my desk and that I am able to share it with you all, because I will be taking these recommendation home to Ellen (my wife) to have a conversation about how we will approach this important part of Henry’s development. I would encourage you to do the same. Happy reading.

By Michael Grose

Helping your child make and keep friends Children who develop healthy friendships generally have a definite set of social skills that help make them easy to like, easy to relate to and easy to play with. One such skill is the ability to adjust their behaviours to suit the social requirements of a particular situation. Many boys struggle in this area and can be loud, overbearing and bossy when their peers want them to be quiet, cooperative and to follow others. You can coach your child to fit in with the requirements of many of their social groups using this three-pronged approach: • Remind: Be pre-emptive with your teaching. Before your child visits their friends

provide some relevant pointers about their behaviour. “Remember to say hello quietly and ask them if they’d like to play with you.”

• Rehearse: It’s useful to practise with children how they should act in social situations. “Okay, Jeremy tell me what you will say when you want to enter a game. Let’s practice waiting for a break in the game, approaching someone you know and saying, “Excuse me. Can I play with you guys?”

• Revisit: Give your child feedback after the event but keep it positive and upbeat. “That was great the way you let the other kids lead the way. Your friends love it when you let them be boss.” Boys, in particular, benefit from being told what works well in terms of their friendships behaviours.

Page 7: Important Dates For Your Diary · 2019-05-29 · Important Dates For Your Diary May 30th Excursion to St. Kilda Beach and Pier Yr 4 31st Interschool Sport Yr 6 June 4th SMART8 Yrs

Encourage healthy friendships The wellbeing of many primary school girls is heavily impacted by her relationships with her peers. When relationships are going well she’ll tend to be happy, however when friendships become tricky then she can feel unhappy, even distraught. Help your daughter identify what a healthy friendship looks and feels like – she should feel safe, valued and able to speak up. Unhealthy relationships, such as cliques, are restrictive, one-sided, full of gossip and criticism. To assist them to reflect on the nature of healthy relationships help your child to formulate responses to these questions: “What does a good friend look like? How does a good friend behave? What do good friends do?”

Encourage friendships with both genders The primary school age is an ideal time for children to form friendships with both girls and boys. This is particularly valid if your child has siblings of their own gender, or don’t have siblings. It’s through these early relationships that we gain the confidence to mix with different genders in the later years. Forming friends across genders helps to break down the mystique that sometimes forms, when a child has little contact with the ‘other’ gender.

Understand the impact of gender on friendships Research shows that boys’ friendship groups are more inclusive and less changeable than friendships enjoyed by girls, particularly those in the eight to twelve age group. If you have a girl, be ready to support your daughter through the hurt of friendship breakdowns and remind them that new friendships are just around the corner. Many girls take a disagreement with a friend personally as they don’t have the emotional development to deal with conflict constructively. Help her reflect on her own place in a friendship breakdown, and encourage her to be open to restoring a relationship once emotions are in check.

Remember, friends a feather flock together If you think that your child doesn’t have as many friends as a sibling or other children their own age, don’t be too alarmed. On average, children usually have only two or three significant friendships at any one time. It’s the quality rather than the quantity of friendships that counts. If you are concerned that your child lacks friends at school encourage them to take up a variety of extra-curricular activities. It’s easier to strike up a friendship with someone when you have something in common. Above all else, encourage your child to be friendly by talking to others, showing an interest in what other children do, offering help when needed, and being willing to enter a game or social situation. Consider teaching your child, if necessary, alternatives to fighting and arguing when there is disagreement and conflict within groups.

CIS Splash

According to research, it is estimated that university graduates today will have an estimated five to seven career changes in their lifetime. So it was not surprising to hear from some of our learners over the last few weeks that whilst they had researched one career, many of them had multiple thoughts and ambitions on their future vocations. Over the past two weeks, all of the children across the school had an opportunity to listen to three guest speakers at varying stages in their career. Selvam, who works in programing and app design to improve safety on our roads (a classic

example of someone working in job that did not exist when starting their career decades

earlier).

Deepa, who works for the Australian Government in the area of immigration.

Bree, who works for Kraft Heinz and develops food and beverage products sold in our

supermarkets.

Interestingly, all of them stated that they had started their career path journey with different ambitions and intentions before moving to the job that they are in now. All three had similar messages for our children, which were: The importance to staying focused on your learning.

When it comes to jobs and careers, keep an open mind.

Follow your passions.

It was wonderful to see and hear how the learners in our school took on these messages. Last Friday, as the Home Learning projects arrived at school it was fascinating to observe the depth and variation of careers in STEAM that the children had considered. Importantly though, they had put deep thought in to the question of why their chosen career was important to society. As stated in a previous piece, one of our intentions when developing the tasks and events for Education Week was to ensure we connected to our Glen Waverley Primary School Purpose of developing individuals who: Learn about themselves and the world around them

Grow to become effective members of the community now and in the future

Achieve personal fulfilment and a love of lifelong learning

Each time I listened to the children speak, I felt immense pride in our entire school community for the way that they engaged in this purpose. The events of Education Week would not have been possible without the combined efforts of students, families and GWPS staff effectively working

together to plant the seeds of ambition, which one day will lead to the fruits of success, innovation and societal impact.

In my last piece I had the opportunity to share with you the purpose of Education Week. In this piece, I have chance to celebrate and reflect on

the learning of the students during this time.

Welcome back to the third Captain’s Corner of this term! This term has gone past quickly,

hasn’t it? We hope you are enjoying the term.

This week is Education Week, and on Tuesday was Open Morning. We focused on STEAM

careers, and walking round through all the classes was really eye opening. From the Preps to

the Year Sixes, all of the displays and presentations were amazing! Doctors, Vets, Engineers,

Teachers, the range of jobs and careers was endless. Well done to all of the students, your

displays were awesome.

On the Wednesday the 26th of May, our whole school read the book Alpacas with Maracas

for the Simultaneous Story Time. At 10am, collectively throughout the school and throughout

Australia, we read about the tale of two alpacas. All the year levels were assigned different

learning tasks and we hope you enjoyed the book!

Thank you for taking the time to read this and we hope you have an amazing week.

The “Kids’ Corner” section of our school newsletter provides the opportunity

for the children to showcase their talents or communicate something special

The Kids Corner section of this fortnight’s newsletter features a number of writing pieces from the children, I hope you enjoy them as much as they enjoy sharing and me reading them too!

Kyra (Year Prep) – The Lost Dog Once upon a time there was a sad dog because she was lost. She was not finding food too and was very hungry. On the way she found a farm and there was another dog. They became good friends. Her friend gave her food and helped her find a home. Her mum was looking for her. Her mum had a map. After a long time her mum found her and both went home happy.

Aditi (Year 3) – “Funny Onion”

Funny Onion

Once there was an onion who wanted to be funny. He wanted to be a comedian and make people laugh, but he only made people cry because he was an onion!!!! So he thought to himself, I shall teach the world how to be funny. So one day, as Funny Onion was walking he saw a carrot. Carrot said “wear a funny hat”, but he still cried.

He met eggplant and he said “wear silly shoes”, but he still cried.

So Funny Onion gave up. But then pineapple came to him and whispered in his ears “to be funny say something funny”, then pineapple huddled away. Then Funny Onion stood up and he did a honking noise and a jump, then everyone stopped and LAUGHED!!!!! Funny Onion could not believe he was now funny so people liked him!! Funny Onion jumped in happiness and I bet he is still a comedian! NOW …….THE END…..

Jash (Year 4) – A Student Should be a Principal Hello everyone this is Jash in Year 4, today I am going to argue that students should be a principal. Here are some of my reasons: They can get experience – in essence, I think students should be a principal because they can experience if they would like to in the future. If I was the principal I would learn a lot. If Mr Catalano teaches us we can learn how to be a principal, what challenges he has. Why he goes to other schools etc. If I was principal I would contribute to every assembly and have strong tremendous ideas for our school to be exceptional. I would make my ideas come true just for our school and show how much affection I have for our school. I will help other students be kind, help Mr. Lewis and Mrs. Tomecek and the other teachers. I may be young but remember, “elders can learn from the young!”

Linaya (Year 4) – Cat This narrative is inspired by Margaret Wild. Learning Intention: To understand our personal journey. Through large tracks, over bundles of dirt, runs a cat with a wombat snagged in his gentle narrow mouth. He takes her to his home down the dirt buried bank. Where this place was no one knew, not wombat, not me, not you. Cat tried to soothe wombat’s fractured paw. What happened no one would ever believe, imagine or want to think about, eternally. The terror that transpired was the result of an evil person’s schadenfreude. How could something change so quickly? This is what they call an extreme case. Bright orange, black and silence. These three things etched in wombat’s vision every time she hesitantly closed her eyes. How on earth could one go from grazing on native grass to having no choice but to hide in a place tucked away in the deep shrubbery, or so she thought? The truth was, she really didn’t know where she was. All she had knowledge of was the vision in the back of her eyes, and an attentive cat, treating wombat as though she was a kitten fresh from labour. After a sleepless night, still dazed she could make out the first sound she heard since this unknown began. A male’s harsh voice began to discuss the treacherous occurrence. The only two words wombat could make out of the muffled voice was “Japanese” and “Bomb”. Two words right now she could not comprehend why they were in the same sentence. (To be continued)

Japanese

Bomb????

Avani (Year 5) - The End The long tongues of fire flickered through my ears whispering, ‘help’. I could hear screams of young children scrambling out of the burnt and torn homes. I could feel her tears sink into me as the burning wind swept her hair. The sorrow in her eyes had a hint of anger. We both stay motionless until she whispers “…..Why?” Her words would scare me forever. In that moment, I felt like everything was in slow motion. One of her tears, dragged by the fires steam, flew past me. Then the world froze. Time stopped. I turned around to finally see her face, her cold hearted expression. I need to rewind time, fix things. I hug her as the same big, gentle eyes stare into my soul. “Run, run away”, I thought. But it was a choice I didn't get to make. There was no escaping the terrible, terrible truth. I looked to the side as fire moved its way through my boat, ripping and tearing, savaging the deck. The fire was hiding, scrambling to stay alive from the villagers’ dirty water, spreading through the floor in attempts to extinguish the blaze. I collapse on the floor. I bury my hands into my eyes as tears flood through the holes of the shredded bamboo sticks beneath me, sizzling out the flaring fire as it crawls up my pants. I yell “why?!” The sorrowful echoes ripple as the world crumbles around me and draws its last breath. As my eyes close, a bright light begins to form in front of me…. Memories flow through my veins as a door appears, pulling me towards… somewhere ….I give in to it and the warm glow slowly carries me through.

A health message from Nurse

Kate

Hand Hygiene

Primary school students across Victoria are being taught lifelong healthy hand hygiene habits to prevent the spread of germs and diseases in the community.

Better hand washing is one of the most important ways to reduce the spread of infectious diseases such as influenza and gastroenteritis.

In schools, these diseases can spread very quickly and significantly impact the school community. By washing your hands thoroughly, you can get rid of germs and stop yourself and others from getting very sick.

Everyone should wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water After going to the toilet Before and after eating After coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose After touching pets and animals Whenever they look dirty.

The best way to wash your hands is wetting your hands with water, rubbing soap all over your hands for 20 seconds, rinsing the soap off your hands and drying them with a paper towel or hand dryer.

Practicing good hand hygiene can help keep friends and family healthy and stop the spread of dangerous diseases. That means fewer absences - for both students and teachers - and better

learning outcomes for the children.

At our school we provide soap in all of the bathrooms and encourage the children to wash their hands as recommended above. May I take this opportunity to also request that families read this article with their child in order to further enhance this important message and the home/school partnership.

If you have any questions pertaining to this article, please do not hesitate to see or contact me at school.

Warm regards,

Kate Wright School Nurse

The annual CSEF amount per primary school student is $125.00. The CSEF payment cannot be used towards voluntary school charges, books, stationery, school uniforms, before/after school care, music lessons, or formals/graduations.

How to Apply for CSEF If you applied for the CSEF at Glen Waverley Primary School in 2017/2018, you do not need to complete an application form in 2019, unless there has been a change to your family circumstances; such as a change of custody, change of name, change of concession card number, or new siblings commencing at the school in 2019. Check with the school office if you are unsure. If you are new to our school please print off the CSEF Application Form (or collect one from the School Office), complete it and bring it to the school office together with your Concession Card.

State Schools’ Relief (SSR) Each year State Schools' Relief assists families who are experiencing financial disadvantages with school clothing, shoes and other essential items. SSR has received additional government funding so that it can help more families needing financial assistance. Students starting prep or year 7 in 2019, who meet the CSEF criteria outlined above, are automatically able to get help with uniforms. SSR will provide basic uniform items and/or a voucher for each student who meets the criteria. The uniform items available for prep students will be advised by SSR during Term 1 2019. How to Apply for SSR Parents of Prep 2019 students must apply for CSEF by the closing date before they are eligible to apply for a uniform pack. Once your CSEF Application has been lodged, and funds received by the school, we will send you a SSR Application for completion and return. Please do not contact SSR directly as they cannot accept applications from parents. The applications for Prep 2019 CSEF uniform packs will be submitted by us in Terms 2 and 3 2019. Please note: the 2019 Prep Package will be determined by the SSR Board mid Term 1, 2019. Shortly after this, all schools will be notified.
