• Import of Building Material in the MENA region witnessed a growth compared to the strong decline in global imports for the period (2011-2015). While decline in oil prices, reduced government earning coupled with global slow down led to fall in the demand of building material products in the recent year 2015.
• The Kingdom witnessed a reduction in demand for its products as a result, the import of building materials from KSA has decreased over the last five years
• Bars & Rods and Electric Wires & Fitting were the major constituent of the building materials imports from Saudi Arabia to MENA
This report looks into the overall imports of building material in MENA vis-à-vis the Kingdom’s share in the imports. It also outlines the import potentials in building material product categories such as Bars & Rods, Metal Sheets, Electric Wires & Fittings, Pipes & Tubes and Glass & Ceramics. Saudi Exporters are encouraged to carry out in-depth analysis for better insight into import potential of any of these product categories.

SUMMARY
4
The global economy is still struggling to find its footing since the last recession, and this struggle is reflected through its industrial and construction sector. Reduced government earnings, oil price crash, lower income levels and stagnant GDP growth have affected the demand of building material industry and in turn global imports. The industry encompasses product categories like cement & plasters, bricks, glass & ceramics, bars & rods, electric wires etc. Figure 1 shows global imports of building material from 2011 to 2015.
The MENA construction sector had been experiencing unparalleled growth; but with the falling oil prices in 2015, didn’t attract adequate business opportunities and government policy saw substantial decline in capital investment into the region. Also, majority of the demands is fulfilled through trade, rather than being local, thus we witness a decline in total imports of building materials by the region.
As shown in figure 3 imports of building material in the MENA region has witnessed a growth of 2% in last 5 years. Over this period, imports to two regions – GCC and North Africa has increased which has contributed to growth of the overall imports of MENA. ROME’s imports declined by 3% per year over the last 5 years. GCC and ROME were the largest consumer with share of roughly 37% and 33% respectively of the overall imports in 2015 for MENA.
The figure shows imports of building material products across the world. The world imports decreased by 3% per year from 2011 and stood at close to 5.2 trillion SAR in 2015. European countries are the major importers of building material products. Imports to Europe accounted for almost 34% of the total imports in 2015 and also the imports to this region have decreased by 5% per year.
Figure 2 shows MENA region has been a net importer of building material products in the past years.
