VALUE OF AUTOMATION

“The first rule of any technology used in

a business is that automation applied to

an effective operation will magnify the

efficiency. The second is that

automation applied to an ineffective

operation will magnify the

inefficiency”

Bill Gates

CASE STUDY: SOFT GATE

Page 28: IMPLEMENTING PROJECT GOVERNANCE · 2018-03-31 · •Are the required documents being uploaded onto your PPM tool? •Are your project benefits, risks, costs and effort being stored

HARD VS SOFT GATES

• Soft gates puts the power and responsibility in the hands of the proejct manager to move the project through gates.

– Goal – Responsibility to entrench & understand values for the PM

• It is not trying to allow some work in the next stage to proceed in parallel with planning and conducting the gate review.

HARD GATE (PRODUCT)

Page 31: IMPLEMENTING PROJECT GOVERNANCE · 2018-03-31 · •Are the required documents being uploaded onto your PPM tool? •Are your project benefits, risks, costs and effort being stored

HARD VS SOFT GATES

• Hard gates places the responsibility and

power in the hands of the decision makers

to re-review the investment. It ensures that

the project manager is constantly re-

evaluating the risk, cost, benefit, effort.

• Goal – Responsibility to entrench & understand

values for the Gate Keepers / Decision Makers

• It is not trying to ensure that all activities in

a stage are completed and no work in the

next stage is started until gate approval.
