What is VITAMIN C?● water-soluble vitamin● also known as L-ascorbic acid● sensitive to heat, light, action of oxidising

agents and metal ions● acts as a reducing agent● in human beings it is not synthesized in

body so consumed through diet

Page 4: Impact of Vitamin C on Oral Health

● chemical formula-C6H8O6

● 6-C lactone of alpha-keto-L-gulonic acid

FUNCTIONS OF VITAMIN C

● protective role as powerful antioxidant

Page 6: Impact of Vitamin C on Oral Health

● formation of collagen by acting as an electron donor in collagen hydroxylation that helps the collagen to attain a stable triple helix structure

Page 7: Impact of Vitamin C on Oral Health

● vitamin C reduces cancer risk by preventing the formation of N-nitroso compounds, which are potentially mutagenic

● wound healing● tissue integrity

EFFECT ON ORAL HEALTH● After 1-3 months of total vitamin C deficiency

scurvy develops.● Signs and symptoms are remembered of 4Hs- *Hemorrhage *Hyperkeratosis *Hypochondriasis *Hematologic abnormalities

Page 9: Impact of Vitamin C on Oral Health

● HEMORRHAGE:bleeding or abnormal blood flow;may be internal or external.

● HYPERKERATOSIS:thickening of stratum corneum with the presence of abnormal quantity of keratin.

● HYPOCHONDRIASIS:worriness about having a serious illness due to an inaccurate perception of the condition of body or mind despite the absence of actual medical condition.

● HEMATOLOGIC ABNORMALITIES:disorders primarily affecting the blood.

Page 10: Impact of Vitamin C on Oral Health

● In oral tissues,Scurvy is associated with- Redness of Interdental papillae Bleeding gums Dry and pale lips Ulceration Glossitis Multiple caries in teeth Tooth loosening

Page 11: Impact of Vitamin C on Oral Health

interdental papillae

● the enlargement and redness is due to inflammation in the lamina propria of the tissue.

Page 12: Impact of Vitamin C on Oral Health

● on even slight provocation gingival bleeding occurs which if left untreated may lead to severe gingivitis

gum bleeding

Page 13: Impact of Vitamin C on Oral Health

dry pale lips

● lips become dry and pale coloured sometimes even associated with bleeding

Page 14: Impact of Vitamin C on Oral Health

ulceration● painful sores inside the mouth,on the tongue,on soft

palate or inside the cheeks● round white or gray in colour with a red edge or border

Page 15: Impact of Vitamin C on Oral Health

glossitis

● soreness of the tongue● inflammation with depapillation

of dorsal surface ● erythematous or reddened tongue

surface with petechial submucosal hemorrhages

Page 16: Impact of Vitamin C on Oral Health

dental caries● decay occur due to demineralisation of enamel and dentin

Page 17: Impact of Vitamin C on Oral Health

tooth loosening

● due to defect in connective tissue formation tooth becomes loose and falls out early.

Page 18: Impact of Vitamin C on Oral Health

PEOPLE AT RISK● chronic malnourished persons who take less than 2

servings of fruits/vegetables per day-

Page 19: Impact of Vitamin C on Oral Health

PEOPLE AT RISK● people with other medical conditions that prevent the

intake/absorption of vitamin C- *dialysis patients *malabsorption disorders *severe dyspepsia● people who live in underdeveloped third world countries

where general malnutrition exists.
