Immunization MICS3Data Analysis and Report Writing Workshop Slide 2 International Goals & Targets MDG 4: Reduce Child Mortality by two thirds among children under five Indicator 15 - Proportion of 1 year old children immunized against measles Slide 3 International Goals & Targets By 2005, Reduction in infant and under-five mortality rate by at least 1/3, in pursuit of the goal of reducing it by 2/3 by 2015 Ensure full immunization of children under one year of age at 90% nationally, with at least 80% coverage in every district or equivalent administrative unit Extend the benefits of new and improved vaccines and other preventive health interventions to children in all countries (Hepatitis B, Hib, Yellow Fever, etc) Slide 4 Background It is recommended that all children receive the following immunizations: At birthBCG (tuberculosis) and Polio 0 At 6 weeksPolio 1 and DPT 1 (diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus) At 10 weeksPolio 2 and DPT 2 At 14 weeksPolio 3 and DPT 3 At 9 monthsMeasles HepB and HiB have same schedules as Polio and DPT Slide 5 Indicators In MICS3, immunization indicators are calculated as -the percentage of children aged 12-23 months who received each specific vaccine by the age of 12 months and -the percentage of children aged 12-23 months who received BCG, DPT 1-3, Polio 1-3 and measles by the age of 12 months Slide 6 Methodological issues The model schedule is adapted in some way by most countries so that it more closely meets their needs. Slide 7 Methodological issues Routine Reporting depends on accurate, timely and comprehensive reporting from the local level to the national level can provide continuous data on trends Surveys depends on mothers having vaccination cards in the household or accurately recalling childrens vaccinations are done periodically, providing limited information on trends Slide 8 Methodological issues Coverage rates based only on data from vaccination cards can be biased because children with cards are probably more likely to be vaccinated than children without cards. So, for children without cards, mothers are asked to report whether or not their children have received specific vaccinations. Slide 9 Methodological issues Indicators are calculated for children aged 12-23 months: All children at this age should have completed all vaccinations Their experience is the most recent experience which is not truncated. Slide 10 Slide 11 Slide 12 Calculation Children vaccinated according to card data + + Children vaccinated according to mothers = Total number of children vaccinated For children without cards (or have cards with missing or incomplete dates) assume the proportion vaccinated by 12 months of age is same as for children who have cards. Slide 13 Example: BCG Percentage vaccinated according to card85.2 Percentage vaccinated according to mothers report+3.7 Total percentage ever vaccinated88.9 Percentage vaccinated by 12 months according to card98.0 Apply percentage88.9 x.98 Percentage vaccinated by 12 months87.1 Slide 14 Slide 15 Slide 16 Country data Latin America and the Caribbean 12-23 month old children immunized against BCG, 2004 Slide 17 Country data Latin America and the Caribbean 12-23 month old children immunized against DPT3, 2004 Slide 18 Country data - Latin America and the Caribbean 12-23 month old children immunized against Polio 3, 2004 Slide 19 Country data Latin America and the Caribbean 12-23 month old children immunized against Measles, 2004 Slide 20 Country data Latin America and the Caribbean 12-23 month old children immunized against HepB3, 2004 Slide 21 Country data Latin America and the Caribbean 12-23 month old children immunized against Hib3, 2004 Slide 22 Country data CEE/CIS 12-23 month old children immunized against BCG, 2004 Slide 23 Country data CEE/CIS 12-23 month old children immunized against DPT3, 2004 Slide 24 Country data- CEE/CIS 12-23 month old children immunized against Polio 3, 2004 Slide 25 Country data - CEE/CIS 12-23 month old children immunized against Measles, 2004 Slide 26 Country data CEE/CIS 12-23 month old children immunized against HepB3, 2004 Slide 27 Country data CEE/CIS 12-23 month old children immunized against Hib3, 2004 Slide 28 Country data West and Central Africa 12-23 month old children immunized against BCG, 2004 Slide 29 Country data West and Central Africa 12-23 month old children immunized against DPT3, 2004 Slide 30 Country data - West and Central Africa 12-23 month old children immunized against Polio 3, 2004 Slide 31 Country data - West and Central Africa 12-23 month old children immunized against Measles, 2004 Slide 32 Country data West and Central Africa 12-23 month old children immunized against HepB3, 2004 Slide 33 Country data Eastern and Southern Africa 12-23 month old children immunized against BCG, 2004 Slide 34 Country data Eastern and Southern Africa 12-23 month old children immunized against DPT3, 2004 Slide 35 Country data - Eastern and Southern Africa 12-23 month old children immunized against Polio 3, 2004 Slide 36 Country data - Eastern and Southern Africa 12-23 month old children immunized against Measles, 2004 Slide 37 Country data Eastern and Southern Africa 12-23 month old children immunized against HepB3, 2004 Slide 38 Country data ESAR/WCAR 12-23 month old children immunized against Hib3, 2004 Slide 39 Country data Middle East and North Africa 12-23 month old children immunized against BCG, 2004 Slide 40 Country data Middle East and North Africa 12-23 month old children immunized against DPT3, 2004 Slide 41 Country data - Middle East and North Africa 12-23 month old children immunized against Polio 3, 2004 Slide 42 Country data - Middle East and North Africa 12-23 month old children immunized against Measles, 2004 Slide 43 Country data Middle East and North Africa 12-23 month old children immunized against HepB3, 2004 Slide 44 Country data Middle East and North Africa 12-23 month old children immunized against Hib3, 2004 Slide 45 Country data East Asia and the Pacific 12-23 month old children immunized against BCG, 2004 Slide 46 Country data East Asia and the Pacific 12-23 month old children immunized against DPT3, 2004 Slide 47 Country data - East Asia and the Pacific 12-23 month old children immunized against Polio 3, 2004 Slide 48 Country data - East Asia and the Pacific 12-23 month old children immunized against Measles, 2004 Slide 49 Country data East Asia and the Pacific 12-23 month old children immunized against HepB3, 2004 Slide 50 Country data East Asia and the Pacific 12-23 month old children immunized against Hib3, 2004 Slide 51 Country data South Asia 12-23 month old children immunized against BCG, 2004 Slide 52 Country data South Asia 12-23 month old children immunized against DPT3, 2004 Slide 53 Country data South Asia 12-23 month old children immunized against Polio 3, 2004 Slide 54 Country data South Asia 12-23 month old children immunized against Measles, 2004 Slide 55 Country data South Asia 12-23 month old children immunized against HepB3, 2004
