A Word from the PresidentHappy New Year to you! I wish you abundant blessings from our good and merciful God.

As we move into this new year, many people look forward to some newness in their lives while maintaining meaningful traditions. We are doing the same at Immaculata Academy. If you are reading this, then you are looking at the brand new platform of the enduring and informative Immaculatan magazine. A few years ago, we pledged to go as green as possible to help fulfill our Franciscan mission to care for our Sister Mother Earth. This e-version of the magazine is the latest in our green efforts which began by using electronic communications internally and with our parents. You will find it three times a year, right here on our website: ImmaculataAcademy.com. Interesting bits of information will be posted between versions on the website and the IA Alumnae Facebook page. Please let us know what you think of our new format.

Other areas of newness within our traditions include the well-received Carols and Cocktails: A Mater Christi Event which featured a more relaxed and mingle-centered atmosphere. Also, the IA Parents Guild will add a splash of newness to their major event this year by changing the theme of their Sweeps party to be more encompassing. It will be a Spring Sweepstakes same great opportunities to win cash and prizes. Look for the ad on the last page of this e-magazine! I hope to see you there.

Within our hallowed walls, our teachers are finding new ways to incorporate STEAM into their classrooms. Look for articles about this, and others about our many alumnae who had successful starts at IA and are now using their talents in exciting ways.

We ask too that you become part of the newness at Immaculata Academy. I ask that you consider becoming a new donor to our Capital Campaign or Annual Fund. By doing so, you have the opportunity of being part of our mission and legacy. We also have initiated a scholarship in honor of Sr. M. Paulette Tirone, FSSJ, who passed away in June 2015. She was a constant source of inspiration to us at Immaculata through her many roles guidance counselor, assistant principal, principal and president. She guided and mentored many of you who are reading this. Please consider contributing to her scholarship.

I want to personally thank those of you who have contributed to any of our efforts to create more scholarship and tuition assistance dollars for our students. Your contributions and your prayers are what keep us going on a day-to-day basis while we engage young minds and help form future global leaders.

May God, in this Year of Mercy, grant you many graces and blessings.

Recently, a letter was sent out to the whole Immaculata Academy Family regretfully informing them that Sr. M. Paulette Tirone, FSSJ, the former president and principal of the school for over thirty years, passed away on June 17th, 2015. While we are all mourning the loss of such an inspiring and beautiful soul, the Sr. M. Paulette Tirone Memorial Fund Scholarship was put into place as a way to honor her and ensure her guiding hand will influence the students of IA for years to come. Thus far, the scholarship fund has garnered over $8,500.

Many of us have so much love, respect, and admiration for Sr. Paulette. In reflecting on the ways she impacted your life, please consider contributing to this scholarship fund as a way to pay tribute to this special woman of God.

Sister Jean M. Cherry, FSSJ, IA President

started at a young age and so she felt this career path was a good choice.

Erin has been able to focus on her two loves, art and science, both in and out of school. In the classroom, she credits her science teacher, Robert

Smith, for helping her learn so much about biology and human anatomy. Outside the classroom, Erins greatest inspiration is Ms. Judi Witt, a local artist, with whom she takes private classes to enhance her artistic abilities.

Erin has won a multitude of awards for her artistic abilities including first place in the Junior Fine Arts Competition at the Erie County Fair, first place in the St. Patricks Day Art Competition sponsored by the Buffalo Irish Center, and honorable mention for the 2015 Drug Free New Year Art & Poetry Contest.

Erin is looking into colleges that offer this special degree including the Rochester Institute of Technology, the Rhode Island School of Design or the Cleveland Institute of Art.

Over the last few years, you may have seen the acronym STEAM used in the world of academia. STEAM refers to initiatives for focusing on the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. Curriculum and extracurricular activities are focused on these five subjects as a means to encourage, educate, and prepare todays students to pursue careers in STEAM-related fields.

At Immaculata, we are excited to offer many avenues for the girls to pursue their interests in each particular area of STEAM.

Erin Reilly, a current junior, is just one of our students who has eagerly delved into the world of STEAM. Her future goal is to pursue a degree in Biomedical Illustration in college. A biomedical illustrator is a professional artist with specialized training in medicine, science, and art. When asked what piqued her interest in this type of study,

she replied, I have always had a passion for art and science, and

after recently winning an award from The Buffalo News for a

cartoon I drew, it opened me up to looking into careers

that involved illustration, and also my love for

science. Erins interest in the complexities

interface called Choregraphe," Lindner said. They also learn to edit the commands by using the Python coding language.

Clifford Quinn, the schools STEAM coordinator, said he is excited to have the NAO robot at the school because it offers a hands-on, interactive way to expose students to robotics design and computer coding.

Our coding and robotics course allows our students the opportunity to explore specifically the python coding language and gain experience programming a robot,

he said. We are excited that our students will be able to

make more informed decisions about their interest in computer science moving on to college and that our students will have the opportunity to make these connections through coding and robotics, a field traditionally underrepresented by women.

Although still deciding on what she plans to study in college, Abbys interests in the other components of STEAM include medicine and biology. A career as a nurse practitioner or physician assistant may be in her future.

    Winter 2016 IMMACULATA ACADEMY 4

In the classroom, a robot is helping to marry the components of STEAM to create a more dynamic learning experience for our students. The NAO robot, pronounced now, is produced by a French company, Aldebaran. It stands about 23 inches tall and has two video cameras for visual learning and facial recognition. As well as looking humanoid, NAO is also equipped with microphones and speakers to allow the students to interact with it in that way. The robot runs on an open source, Linux-based operating system, which makes it a good companion for the Coding and Design class. It has been lovingly given the name Pawlette because IAs mascot is a bear and to honor Sr. M. Paulette Tirone, FSSJ, who passed away this past June. Abby Choboy, current junior, said she has always had an interest in computers, and her father is a software engineer. Because Immaculata focuses on STEAM, I am able to get a jump-start on my future, Choboy said. Using the robot allows me to utilize my coding skills and watch the programming come to life. I can code the robot to say and do things that can make performing tasks easier.

Abby was excited to take Coding and Design. It is a class definitely "outside the box," an opportunity to try something brand new that had never been offered at Immaculata.

Melissa Lindner, chair of the technology department, and instructor for the class, said the robots technology has significantly benefitted the classroom.

In our Coding and Design course, we use the robot daily. The girls are taught to use a graphic user

Don Oliver Immaculata Academy Mathematics Teacher and Department ChairAs a teacher at Immaculata Academy, I have seen first-hand how important philanthropy is to a private institution such as ours. It opens doors to those who might not otherwise have the sufficient means to attend. It creates opportunities to teach in a facility equipped to handle the challenges of preparing students for a future that is forever evolving. In my 18 years at Immaculata Academy, I have seen the educational experience grow inside, as well as outside the classroom. This is why I choose to give back.

Korleen Brady 10 BA in Sociology, Le Moyne College 14 MA in Special Education, Teachers College, Columbia University 15 Special Education Teacher, Brilla College Prep, South BronxImmaculata Academy gave me the power to believe in myself. I had not realized how truly confident I was in my academics until I arrived at college and saw how far behind my peers were. Not only did IA prepare me academically for college, it also prepared me for life. The relationships I had with teachers at IA are the foundation with which I built relationships with college professors, and now my colleagues and bosses. The cross country and track team experience taught me the value of perseverance and the importance of team spirit. The friendships I built at IA taught me valuable life lessons about trust and loyalty. All in all, my experience at IA was an integral part of my formation and I am so grateful for the lessons I learned there.

Lawrence M. Kavanaugh, Jr. Immaculata Academy Golf Coach Father of Emily 09 and Madeline 12 Capital Campaign Committee MemberFor my two daughters, IA could not have been a better fit. Franciscan traditions, the wonderful Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph, the great teaching staff and all the wonderful parents and their children have helped to form my daughters into wonderful, educated, faithful young women. This was the promise IA made when I agreed to send the girls there, and they delivered. Its been my privilege to stay on at Immaculata in a small way. Coaching the golf team all these years, chairing the Mater Christi Gala, serving on volunteer committees, supporting scholarship initiatives, and most importantly, to see and admire the hard work of all those committed to Franciscan education.

Please consider supporting Immaculata Academy and making a ripple of your own.Ways you can give back: volunteer at IA, make a gift to the IA annual fund, scholarships and/or capital campaign, or remember IA in your future plans. For more information contact the Institutional Advancement Office at [email protected] or (716) 648-4307.

The Parents Guild meets the second Thursday of every month in the IA cafeteria at 7 PM. All current IA parents

are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Students Raised Over $700 for Gerard Place by Sleeping out for the HomelessTwenty-three students from Immaculata Academy braved the elements to sleep out for the homeless and to raise over $700 for Gerard Place in Buffalo. From Friday, November 6th until Saturday, November 7th, students set up camp in the back parking lot of the school using cardboard boxes, tarps, sleeping bags, and blankets in exchange for pledges from family and friends. A prayer service was held at midnight to pray for all those who are homeless. The event, sponsored by the Franciscan Club, is an example of faith in action, an ideal emphasized through the Academy in various

ways. Kathy Hens-Zuppa, Marketing and Event Coordinator for Gerard Place, came to speak to the students about what they do and how the students can get involved and help. Gerard Place provides support and transitional housing for single-parent families that have experienced the pain of poverty, homelessness, and/or domestic/substance abuse. This year marks the 13th time the Academy has held the event.

Immaculata Academy Tugged at Hearts with Performances of Little Women, The MusicalCrowds were delighted with Little Women in November as students from Immaculata

Academy and St. Francis were center stage. Performances were held November 20th-22nd with a special dress rehearsal on the 19th for local grammar school students. The musical, written by Allan Knee and based on Louisa May Alcotts novel, tells the story

of the four March sisters during the Civil War. Each sister had her own personality, adventures, and obstacles to overcome. With a mix of song genresstories of love, loss, and heartbreakthe show had audiences on the edges of their seats and tissues in their hands!

Students Help Bring Christmas CheerDecked out in holiday socks, uniform skirts, blue Immaculata Santa hats and various IA gear, students helped to spread holiday cheer as they marched down the streets of Hamburg in the annual Hamburgh Holidays Santa Claus Parade. The white IA bus served as a float and donned a

festive wreath on the front and students distributed candy and IA pencils to parade viewers. This was the first year Immaculata participated in the parade, but it looks like this is an event that the Academy will continue to attend for years to come.

Senior Class Makes Memories in BostonImmaculata Academy's senior class spent the weekend in Boston in October making memories while visiting historical hotspots, touring, and shopping. Stops on the trip included the New England Aquarium, the Boston Harbor, Quincy Market, Cambridge, and Harvard Square. In addition, students walked

the Freedom Trail, visited Bunker Hill, viewed Boston from the Skywalk Observatory at the Prudential Center, and went on a Duck Tour!

Broadcasting Students Tour WIVB Studios Immaculata's Elements of Broadcasting class

toured the studios of WIVB Channel 4 on October 23rd. Students visited and learned about all of the departments that work together to produce a news broadcast, had an opportunity to take their turn in front of the green screen to give a mock weather forecast, and stand behind the news desk. A highlight of the trip was getting a chance to chat with Rich Newberg.

Students, Faculty, Staff Donate Hair to Pantene Beautiful LengthsMore than 544" of hair was collected from 32 Immaculata Academy students and staff as they received haircuts in the lobby of the school for a Pantene Beautiful Lengths ponytail cutting event. Created in partnership with HairUWear and the American Cancer Society, Pantene Beautiful Lengths encourages individuals to grow, cut and donate their healthy hair to make free wigs for women who have lost their hair due to cancer treatment. By giving so selflessly of themselves, they joined thousands of people across the country who have already made the kindest cut of all. To complete the event, the school body gathered in the auditorium for a donation ceremony, where before pictures were shown and new hairdo reveals were made.

    Fall Sports Recap

    Winter Sports

Soccer continued to have success on the field this year, despite the league's major overhaul. The Bears were Division B champions of the MMHSAA, but fell short of advancing passed the quarterfinals in the A bracket playoffs. The Bears finished their season with an 11-4 record. Leading scorer Kiley Austin was honored by WKBW as one of their Super 7 Athletes of the Week.

JV and varsity volleyball also had great seasons. Varsity won their quarterfinal game against Mount Saint Marys, pitting them against St. Marys of Lancaster in the semi-finals. The Bears put up a great fight, spiking and digging their way to a lot of points in each game, but unfortunately were unable to finish. Fantastic season, Lady Bears.

The world of golf stayed fascinating for another year, as the team really came together by the end of the season. Through a great deal of dedication and hard work by all of the girls, the golf team continues to be a contender in the MMHSAA.

The cross country team enjoyed their best season in the history of the school this fall. The girls won a variety of invitational meets, went undefeated in the league, won the All-Catholic title for the sixth year in a row, and many runners set individual records. After such a successful season, the team moved on to the State Federation Meet in Wappinger Falls, NY and held their own against some of the toughest competitors in the state, finishing in 22nd place overall! Rachel Luczak had an amazing senior year, as she went undefeated in the league and made the All-Western New York cross country Team.

If the past two years are any indication of future success, the indoor track team is gearing up for what could be its best season yet. Although the 2015-16 season is young, the team has already broken two school records in the first week of competition. Our young ladies hope their hard work to get stronger and faster will continue and soon show in the record books. Immaculata competes in Section VI along with other private schools from the area.

The JV & varsity bowling teams continue to be strong competitors in the MMHSA. The Bears enjoy the strength that

comes with experience at the varsity level, but will still need to take each game one frame at a time in order to win their matches. In contrast, the JV Bears feature many fresh faces this year, which will make them a fun team to watch as they improve each match.

The JV and varsity basketball teams look to keep the ball rolling into the second half of their seasons. Both teams are having very successful seasons thus far and look forward to continuing to come together on and off the court. The varsity Bears are led by a strong core of upperclassmen, but also rely on their youth to provide key minutes off the bench. After an appearance at the New York State Championships last season and welcoming Jordan Heinold into the illustrious 1,000 Point Club, the Bears are looking forward to some stiff competition in the coming weeks as they continue their push to return to another state championship.

Immaculata has a presence on the MMHSAA hockey team this year with freshman Magdalene Sypche in goal. The team has been facing some stiff competition, but has been successful on the ice.
