Collier Rutledge goes up to bat for cancer awareness

IMG Academy 3B/LF Collier Rutledge was selected to participate in the 2015 International Power Showcase in December, but he had a dilemma.

Part of participating in the event means that a player may participate in the Homeruns that Help initiative, a community outreach initiative spearheaded by Power Showcase for players to partner with local children suffering from life-threatening illnesses. However, the Houston, Texas native wanted a more personal connection to who he was helping, which is how he connected with Megan Walejko, a three-year old cancer survivor originally from Rhode Island and daughter of Joe Walejko, the Program Manager for IMG Academy Soccer.

“I saw Megan for the first time at an IMG football game, she had a smile that will touch anyone’s heart, and somehow I just knew that was who I was going to support at the Showcase,” said Collier on how he connected with Megan. “When I learned that Megan’s dad worked in the Soccer program, it just made it perfect.”

Megan, a playful three-year old with a “mischevious streak,” according to her dad, was afflicted with medulloblastoma, a relatively rare form of cancer that occurs mostly with children under the age of 10. Joe and his wife, Jeannine, had been working to raise awareness through local organizations, so Collier’s offer to sponsor her at the Power Showcase was a very welcome surprise.

“I think it’s a testament to what we are as an IMG community that not only a student, but families, would recognize somebody within IMG (battling a life-threatening diagnosis) and show support like this and raise awareness,” described Joe when the Rutledge family approached him about the opportunity.

The Walejko family had been working diligently through a number of organizations such as the Payton Wright Foundation, Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation, Hope Foundation and Greg Wohrle Foundation. Recently, Joe and Jeanine, along with eldest daughter Maggie, took part in the Paint St. Pete Gold photoshoot as another means of raising awareness.

Gold is the color symbolizing pediatric cancer. The Walejko family believes that Collier’s performance isn’t just important to them, it’s important to everyone at All

Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Fla., fighting for their lives.

“Whether Collier hits a bunch of homeruns or not, that’s not the ultimate goal,” said Walejko. “What he’s doing for Megan is not only important to us, it’s important to everyone else at All Children’s Hospital fighting childhood cancer.”

To play in the prestigious International Power Showcase, participants are required to achieve and maintain high-academics status, in addition to leadership qualities. To that end, Rutledge was a natural fit for the event.

The objective of Homeruns that Help is to raise awareness for the children’s respective conditions, or to potentially raise money for their treatment. Community service is a big part of Collier’s life, having donated considerable time in his native Houston to Bo’s Place, a charity who helps families coping with lost loved ones, and joining the annual Hydrocephalus Walk in to support his young cousin who has gone through three brain surgeries with the condition. Closer to IMG, Collier gives time to the Ronald McDonald House in St. Petersburg, and tries to participate in the Miracle League of Manasota as often as possible.
