Ice shelves are thinning at an accelerating rate- mainly due to ocean interactions
Quantify the dominant ocean-ice shelf processes responsible for basal meltingin Dronning Maud Land
Secondary objectives
1. Quantify the dynamics of the Antarctic Slope Front associated withepisodic warm water pulses and melting under the ice shelves Fimbulisen and Nivlisen
2. Study basal channel evolution and derive melt rates from in-situ data and remote sensing
3. Improve parametrization of fine-scale coupled ocean-ice shelf processes in climate models
WP1 Oceanographic processes governing the exchange under Fimbul Ice Shelf—> PhD student (NPI/UiB)
Work packages
WP2 Observations of ice-shelf basal melting—> Postdoc (NPI/UiB)
WP3 Modeling of small-scale ice-ocean interactions—> Postdoc (APN)

Data Management
Format and Metadata
• Processed and quality-controlled. Converted to NetCDF format.
• Metadata according to international Climate Forecast (CF) conventions
(http://cfconventions.org/).
Data portal
• Full resolution processed data sets will be made public available at the Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI) at https://data.npol
• Each data set will obtain a doi and will be described in a summary
• Raw data will also be archived at the NPI
• The NPI data portal is part of Norwegian Marine Data Centre (NMDC)
What
• Oceanographic data (T, S, U,V) from ocean and ice-shelf moorings
• glacial data (ice thickness)
Outcomes and impacts
Truly unique data set: First concurrent measurements of slope front dynamics, ice shelf cavity circulation and basal melt rates
The interdisciplinary approach will warrant fundamental new knowledge of regional to fine-scale ocean-ice shelf processes in Dronning Maud Land.
Improve climate models and reduce uncertainties in climate projections andthereby allow policy makers to take measures to reduce sea level rise.
