Modern cities face a number of simultaneous challenges ranging from a changing demographic, a desire to improve the quality of peoples lives, government demands for reduced pollution, generally increasing traffic demand, increasing extremes of weather, increasing demand for public information and a call for improved incident management.

With the ImCity® central system, multiple sub-systems and equipment become connected, storing their information (data) centrally. Having data in one place enables automated responses to incidents, allows a single operator to monitor and control more sub-systems and supports the delivery of additional services.

In control of your systems

Managing the city Modern cities face a number of simultaneous challenges ranging from a

changing demographic, a desire to improve the quality of peoples lives,

government demands for reduced pollution, generally increasing traffic

demand, increasing extremes of weather, increasing demand for public infor-

maton and a call for improved incident management.

Historically, city functions have been managed by separate depart-

ments each with their own objectives and budgets. Due to the current

challenges, many responsible managers are looking to the benefits of

sharing information and data to bring about better overall coordina-

tion and improved efficiency. To turn this concept into reality a city

manager needs access to a central system tool-kit that will work with

their existing systems but will provide the coor dination and added-

value brought about by sharing information.

Make your information work for youWith the ImCity® central system, multiple sub-systems and equipment

become connected, storing their information (data) centrally. Having data

in one place enables automated responses to incidents, allows a single

operator to monitor and control more sub-systems and supports the delivery

of additional services.

Operator efficiencyExisting sub-systems may have their own user interfaces but by combining

the essential information into a single, logical, uniform format an ImCity®

operator is able to react more quickly and appro priately to a developing

situation. At the ImCity® user interface emphasis is placed on providing a

uniform approach to accessing information independent of the source of

the data and then similarly to applying controls where necessary. Access to

such a range of data empowers operators to actively manage their network

and activate strategies to efficiently manage developing situations.

Increases focus on automation to reduce costs

Provides a familiar environment for operator efficiency

Speeds up the response to a developing situation

 Increases automation, reducing human error

 Promotes inter-department information sharing

Assists in the need to keep the public informed

Uses open communications to enable interoperability

Supports typical ITS functions including variable message signs,

access control, air quality, car parks, CCTV (cameras), meteoro-

logical data, public transport signs and vehicles, traffic detectors,

UTC links, automatic license plate recognition links, ramp

metering, traffic signals, transport routes, accidents, incidents, road

works and events

Example situationsThe mobile age has benefits but also its challenges. By integrating data from

a diverse range of systems such as CCTV, road works, traffic signals, weather

stations and variable message signs, operators in one city can activate strate-

gies to respond to abnormal conditions and in the process inform travellers

both through road-side signage and via the internet.

Another city use their ImCity® system in a very different way. They leave

the system to ‘run itself’ with pre-defined strategies being used to activate

strategic Variable Message Signs on major roads when specific, monitored

for, events occur. The system’s very high ‘availability’ makes this possible.

ImCity® in useThe ImCity® suite is in use in many cities. Each installation is different but

they share common underlying software modules and a common recogni-

tion that there is more value in a centralised pool of data. The scale of the

systems varies too from those that are connected to only two equipment

types to those which are connected to and monitoring over ten different

sub-systems with both data consuming and XML data publishing functions.

ImCity® Technical SpecificationsThe table below gives a summary of the ImCity® functions and capabilities. Functions are brought about from a tool-kit of soft-

ware modules that are installed to suit our clients' needs.

Strategy supervisor Strategy tool for executing groups of commands en-masse

Scripting tool for simple or complex and powerful programs that monitor, analyse and react to

recognised situations.

Schedule tool enables automated execution of strategies and scripts.

Provides facilities to remind operators of required actions.

Remote monitoring Graphical User Interface provides at-a-glance health-status of connected equipment. For a

number of connected equipment types it provides additional information on the map e.g. for

car-park controllers visual indication of the remaining available capacity is shown.

Control Provides facilities for issuing of commands and configuration to appropriately equipped devices.

Reports Extensive list of pre-defined reports available in CSV, XML or Microsoft Excel.

Customised reports available using the export-data tool.

Data publishing Supports manual data broadcast to public web-sites.

Supports automated XML data download to public web-sites.

Operator notes Facility provided that enables multiple operators to share information even if remotely located.

User interface Multilingual user interface.

Icon representation of connected equipment and sub-systems.

Multiple customisable map views possible which can be saved for future use.

Map layers can be turned on and off. Multi-criteria filtering and object visibility settings can be

used to optimise clarity for the operator.

Standardised object property pages provide access to common operations for all equipment.

User management ImCity® supports extensive control over individual users and groups enabling administrator

defined configuration of create, read, write, control, export and execute operations.

Supported

equipment

ImCity® has built-in support for Variable Message Signs, Access Control, Air Quality, Car Parks,

CCTV, Meteorological, Public Transport signs and vehicles, Traffic Detectors, UTC links, ANPR

links, Ramp Metering, Traffic signals, Transport routes, Accidents, Incidents, Road works, Events.

Other interfaces can be developed.

ImCity interfaces directly with Imtech's other UTMS products (RMS and ImFlow) supporting fault

information exchange and scenario managment functions.

Supported functions Journey Time, Real-time Passenger Information, Car Park Guidance, Back-up, Archive,

Notification email.

Communication ImCity® is based on internet technology with support for both wired and wireless IP networks.

For non-IP based equipment adapters are developed to communicate using legacy protocols.

System dimensions

& technology

The ImCity® central system is based on the Oracle database. There are no physical limitations

to the number of equipment connections and sub-systems. Up to 20 operator stations can be

simultaneously connect to the central system. ImCity® is UTMC compliant utilising standard open

interfaces such as DATEX2, SIRI and XML.
