LESSON STEPS1. Read the story in Luke 18:1-8. Explain that this parable compares a judge toGod, telling us that God will care for us even more. God will be fair and act quickly. This parable is related to prayer. It teaches us not to give up praying to God, notto quit, and not to lose heart. God hears our prayers and cares about us deeply.

2. Pray together. This may be a good time to stop and ask the students to sharethings they need to pray about continually. Accept all prayer requests and have atime of prayer together. You may want to quietly sing a prayer song together.Remember to take time to keep praying for these and other requests throughoutthe rest of this unit.

3. Read Psalm 47. Explain that the Israelites often thought of themselves asGod’s only people. Have students take a close look at verses 7-9. Verse 9 talksabout the “princes of the peoples.” Psalms contains frequent references to a daywhen “the peoples”—that is, all ethnic groups—will exultantly praise God. In thispsalm they not only join in, they do so as “the people of the God of Abraham”—that is, as insiders included in God’s covenant with the Israelites. We can bethankful that this includes us today! We, too, can praise our God, the King.

4. Complete the handout, “A God Who Is Faithful and Just.” The scriptures giveexamples of God as judge and king. Both are images of attentiveness, caregiving, and leading. Have students look up the verses. Draw a line from the verses to theimage reflected in the passage.

5. “Jesus Is the Real Thing.” Conclude the final Images of God section by lookingat this handout. First, show examples of authentic items like a can of Coke (“thereal thing,” according to advertising), and a $50.00 bill. (Explain that banks traintheir tellers to recognize counterfeit bills by helping them become as familiar withreal money as possible. In time, they are able to detect counterfeit money quickly, simply because they are familiar with the real thing.) Show more examples of thereal and authentic.

Distribute the handout. Have the students look over the list of who Jesus isand how he meets our needs. Ask them to share what particular images stand outto them and why. Have them write down their favorite examples and share whatthese examples mean to them.

EXTEND THE LESSON(These activities will extend the lesson to longer than 50 minutes.)

• Personal reflection. Play the song by Mark Schultz entitled “I Am.” Have the stu-dents list the “I am” statements from the song. Play the song a second time, to givethem another chance to write down as many images as they can.

I am the maker of the heavens I am the bright and morning star, I am the breath of all creation Who always was and is to come

God has a place of authority. When God sent Jesus to the earth, Jesus had thissame authority. God is someone who discerns right from wrong in decisions, rulings, and matters of judgments. God is a fair judge and king, who is concerned aboutjustice.

You may want to have students look up John 12:47: Christ was clear in thisverse that he did not come to judge the world, but to save it.

2. Jesus says in John 15:1, “I am the vine and my Father is the vine grower .”

3. Give two points of how making a pinch pot is similar to how God molds our lives.(Answers will vary.) God is our creator. God fashions or forms us like a potter fashions clay. God knowsall about us. Clay is pressed, shaped, and molded. God shapes us, if we are willing. A space is made inthe pot; we need a space in us to hold the things of God. Each person has a texture to his or her personalitylike the texturing of a pot. Clay needs to be watched and attended to, just as God watches and cares forus. Potters knead the clay; they know what the clay needs. God works with us and knows just what weneed. Even when the pot seems ruined, it can be saved. God can save us and rework our lives for good.

4. Explain what the metaphor of God as Master Potter means to you.Answers will vary.

If even one sheep out of 99 strays and is lost, the shepherdwill search for it and find it. The shepherd will rejoice when the sheep is found. God searches for us.God stays with us and cares for us. God protects us and comforts us.

7. In the book of John, Jesus said, “I am the good shepherd.” List one other example of the“I am” statements Jesus made. May include: I am he; I am the bread of life; I am the true vine, and my father is the vine grower; I amthe way, and the truth, and the life; I am the light of the world; I am the gate for the sheep; I am fromabove; I am not of this world; I am the resurrection and the life
