What is the difference between a vector based image and a bitmap (or raster) based image?

Bitmap stored as pixels Vectors use mathematical formulas to make

shapes. Bitmap eg. JPEG, GIF, TIFF, PNG Vector eg. WMF, EPS, CGM, CDR.

What is the difference between a GIF formatted file and a JPEG?

JPEG : Images with lots of colour, lossy (some of picture thrown away) method of compression.

GIF : Images with fewer colours, lossless method of compression.

GIF used for text, logos, lines and buttons. JPEG used for photographs.

What is the difference between and embedded graphic (image) and a linked graphic (image) in a Word or Powerpoint document?

Main difference is where data is stored: Linked is in a source file. Embedded is part of the actual word document.

Embedded is the default. Why is it important? We found out by researching on the net.

What is a 'colour pallette'?

A block of bytes dividing colours available for use in an indexed colour image.

Small Pallette: GIF File Large Pallette: TIFF File

What is lossless compression? Do JPEG format files normally use this?

Reducing file size with no loss in image quality.

JPEG files do not normally use this. This is important to reduce the artefacts in

the image.

What does the FBS skills wiki say about using PNG files?

Portable Network Graphics. A bitmapped image format that employs

lossless data compression. Overcomes problems with GIF and JPEG

files. It does not support animations. Are there other new formats?: We didn’t find

any!

What is BAD about using .bmp format files in your work? Why should you try to avoid this?

These files don’t support compression = very large files.

The files are not supported by web browsers.

This should be avoided so that the files are not huge.

What is Flickr?

Flickr is a photo sharing website and web services suite. Allows photos to be tagged.

Recreational: Photo sharing Academic: Bloggers as a photo repository Allows categorizations of photos.
