Language Arts and Reading - Sr. Meher The objective of English Language Arts (ELA) is to help our students grow into critical readers, writers, and thinkers. Fourth and fifth graders studied the following in the second quarter: Reading: The aim is to get the students to stop and ask themselves questions about a section when they read, such as Why did this event happen? and What are the main ideas in this selection? It is also important that they learn to summarize sections of the text as well as the text as a whole. JazakumAllahu Khairan to our parent volunteers who helped label books from the fourth and fifth grade libraries! Spelling: Alhamdulillah, we have covered all the words in the fourth and fifth grade Spelling bee lists and we are now reviewing! Thanks to the help of parent volunteers we are also holding optional Spelling bee review classes afterschool for 4th-8th graders. InshAllah the next review session will be afterschool on January 9, 2018. Writing: We are continuing to explore different forms of writing. This quarter we covered poetry and formal letters. All the fourth and fifth graders have participated in a poetry competition (www.appelley.org) and have written to school administration about the importance of recycling. InshAllah we are planning to visit the Roswell Recycling Center on January 9, 2018. In October we hosted Tasnim Shamma, a journalist with NPR WABE who gave a presentation on the experiences of a Muslim journalist. We had very informative discussion and the students really enjoyed the informative exchange. Fourth graders were so excited they even asked for her autograph! Fifth graders did presentations on culture and heritage which was the topic of one of their reading assignments. Both fourth and fifth graders also went on a school field trip Quest Laser Tag, which was not only educational but a great deal of fun! Please encourage your child to complete the weekly homework packets and IXL skills! Jzk!
