This piece goes out for printing at the beginning of August for reading at the start of September. We look forward to something new but, of course, we feel that we have sort-of been there before.
The last three months in the life of Illogan Parish Council have included the formal welcome to a new Rector of the ecclesiastical parish and, in the civil parish, the second year of the revived Illogan Parish Fair and of the (nearly) new Illogan Gardens Competition. The formal “welcome” at St Illogan Church was kindly made by the Vice-Chairman, Cllr Jill Ferrett whilst I was there that evening in my [other] church role and, at the Parish Fair, she kindly covered my brief stay in hospital.
It was a real pleasure to make the formal prize presentations for the Gardens Competition, supported by Cllr Wilkins, whose Events Committee had done all the work that delivered the event, judging visits and so forth.
The common thread in all three is that none of them would have any meaning or outcome without the support of the wider “crowd”. The beyond-normal contributions of organising committees, secretaries, various clubs, societies, sheer enthusiasts and a general willingness to get involved; these enable our society and community to be more than just a collection of people who spend some time during the week in the same general location, having done work, school, college or whatever. This ranges from showing off a ginormous steam roller, to the W.I. ladies giving up a glorious summer Saturday to provide the refreshments at a prize-giving. They make the rather formal role of Chairman the pleasure and honour it can be. They also make Illogan the pleasurable and vibrant place it is.
Please do not let this treasure slip through our collective fingers. Encourage the enthusiasts, support and help them/us all. And there is something we can all do - ready for next year. Decide now to have a go at the Garden Competition. There are so very many and varied gardens here – not all of them that grand and permanent. (I know one that for the time being is a small corner and all in pots whilst someone moves house). We probably all know of a garden we secretly admire. So enter yourself and “suggest” friends and neighbours. The council staff will happily keep a little list! The more entries, the more categories and more prizes! (And possibly even more eatables from the W.I. next July. What more could we possibly want?)

By the time you read this, we will be into September and the majority of our tourists will have departed for another year. What a brilliant summer they have had and I hope it encourages them to come back again next year.
We had a very successful village fair, thanks to the hard work of Steve Turner and his team and an equally successful garden competition. My job was to chauffeur the judge, Andrew Tompsett, to the entrants’ gardens. I’m glad it wasn’t my job to judge, because everyone would have won a prize! Thanks to all those that made the effort to enter and if you didn’t, there is always next year. Also, can I thank the New Inn, Keltek Brewery and the Robartes
Arms for their generosity with prizes for the competition.
It seems silly sitting here in a sunny garden in August, thinking about planning the Christmas Lights Festival at both ends of the village but, “time and tide wait for no man” they say, and there is a lot to plan.
And lastly, an update on swings for Illogan Park. I was hoping to get them installed for the summer holidays but there is a delay on the installation of the new soft surface. My phone and email are red hot trying to get Cornwall Council to get a move on with this, and I won’t give up so that our children have got some swings.

Illogan Parish Council is pleased to report that it has been given a clean bill of health by Grant Thornton, the External Auditors. Grant Thornton reviewed the Council’s financial management for the year ending 31st March 2013 and found no cause for concern or any other matters for attention.

Polite Notices
As a courtesy to those members of the public who have asked us, may we remind people about two important
health and safety issues.
One of our biggest complaints is dog fouling. Never mind the fact that you can skid on dog excrement better than
any banana, dog faeces carries bacteria and can be harmful, particularly to small children. There are dog bins
available all over the Parish. They are quite expensive to install but we have placed as many as is financially and
strategically possible and we would urge dog owners to use these facilities or to take their poo bags home for later
disposal. Bear in mind, too, that excrement left on verges is just as likely to cause a health issue, and think of the
poor contractor who has to do the strimming! You can actually be fined if caught, so it makes sense to be health and
safety conscious.
Please avoid parking on pavements. This is also a health and safety hazard, not least for members of the public who
are blind or partially sighted who rely on a clear thoroughfare when using the pavements. It is also difficult to
manoeuvre pushchairs and cars parked on pavements force parents to move into the main road just to get past. So
please think before blocking other peoples’ paths. Thank you.
Illogan – some of it is seen by others, much of it gets carried out unseen by all but God himself. But we all have an obligation to care for one another – not based on friendship necessarily, but on the fact that God himself has placed the highest value on every human being. Each person is valued and loved by God, (as you are valued by God) each person is significant to him (as you are signifi-cant to him) and therefore all of us have an obligation to care for our fellow human beings, simply because God loves them.
Each of us has much to contribute to fostering a sense of pride in the place we love but it begins by caring for each other simply as neighbours, and by wanting the best for each other.
Jesus said, “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you ..” Matt 7:12. If we managed that, we'd certainly have reason for a sense of pride in the place we lived.

A Sense of Pride in the Place we Live
Jackie and I have been here in Illogan Parish for all of a few months now and we're feeling right at home. It was a privilege to be invited to open the summer fete and it was a pleasure to meet a number of people and organisations in the parish.
I've also been to an Illogan parish council meeting where I met some of the councillors and was told about the Parish Plan. I've since received a copy and had a look through. Its good.
The first theme is 'Community', with an accompanying aim that reads: “To foster a sense of belonging, and pride in the place we live.”
Those who had contributed to the public consultation identified a need for more community events such as Tea Treats (yes!), summer village shows (sounds good), the celebration of local heroes and Cornish culture (right'on).
To love and be loved
As I think about it, I wonder too whether the desire for community events is also fundamentally about wanting to know each other better, and to increase our sense of 'neighbourliness'. Perhaps even more foundational, a desire to love and to be loved.
Love and friendship, after all, are a big part of what enhances life. This theme is expressed rather beautifully in the film 'Toy Story', and the opening song (nominated for an Academy Award) by Randy Newman goes like this:

When the road looks rough ahead
And you're miles and miles from your nice warm bed
You just remember what your old pal said
Boy you've got a friend in me
Yeah you've got a friend in me.
Each of us wants (I would even say, needs) to feel that we have a place where we belong; where we are important, and where people care about us. I think we'd agree, none of us is created to be alone or totally self-sufficient. Yet some people are lonely, and others are finding themselves required to be self-sufficient for lack of people who care.

What’s on at Illogan Village Hall

We had a great day at the Parish Fair which was, in part, held at the hall. A big thank you to our regular users who came along and added interest and colour to our bit. We are now looking forward to our late summer / autumn season which, apart from our usual activities, will feature two special events:-
The first event is the Illogan Players show on Friday 20th and Saturday 21st September, which this year has ‘Music through the Ages’ as its theme. As the name suggests it will be musically based but with a healthy dollop of humorous offerings too… £4 adults and £3 children. Suitable for all ages. Tickets can be booked in advance on 843845 then simply collect and pay on arrival. All profits to local good causes.
The second is a children’s Halloween party (14yrs and under) on Thursday 31st October from 6.30pm to 9pm, organised by the friends of 1st Illogan Scouts. Only £1.50 entry per person, which includes a disco, food, soft drinks and games. Under 7’s must be accom-panied by an adult.
Appeal
The Illogan Players, our local drama group, are still in need of a piano (traditional upright or electric). If you have one that you would like to donate to the group, please phone 843845.
The Village Hall still offers a broad range of activities for all age groups so, if you haven’t done so already, why not pop along to the hall and try one out. These taster sessions are usually free.
Helping with the running of the Village Hall is also a great way to get involved in community activities. You might like to join the management committee or may have some free time and can help in more practical ways. Please phone Steve on 843845 for an informal chat about how you might be able to help out.
Hire of the Village Hall
The hall is available for parties, receptions, meetings and conferencing at very competitive rates. Facilities available include the main hall, a fully equipped kitch-en and a smaller meeting / training room. Tables and chairs are also available, as is a public address system. Something for everyone? We definitely tried this year. We opened for longer and had even more to look at and do. The Parish Fair Project Group were delighted with the amount of people that came along and the larger number of exhibitors, stallholders and performers.
Our sincerest thanks go to all those who supported the event. Your generosity meant that we were once again able to give four local charities and good causes a financial boost.
Mr Simon Hague, Head of Illogan School, presided over the opening ceremony. After a few words of thanks, Mr Hague handed over to our newest member of the Parish, the Rev’d Steve Robinson, who graciously declared the second Illogan Parish Fair open. In the after-noon, once the show judging had taken place, Cllr. Jill Ferrett, Deputy Chair of Illogan Parish Council and Rev’d Robinson awarded the show cups.
The Horticultural and Domestic Show was another success, attracting even more inter-est from younger members of the Parish than last year. Geoff Curnow swept the board in the vegetable section, winning 4 cups overall – the best horticultural exhibit and the best vegetable exhibit for his
potatoes, the cup for most points in a section and the overall winner’s cup. Carol Richards achieved the most points in the flowers & pot plant section and was award-ed the flowers & plant cup. Warren Pearce received the Cornish trophy and the best exhibit in the cookery for his ginger fairings. Other best in show cup winners were: Margaret Jewitt for her cross-stitch item, Mrs S Wood-house for her ‘Garden Snippets’ floral arrangement and Roy Davey in the watercolour painting category.
Cook of the Year with the most points was Lesley Keast, and joint winners of the photography cup were Eleanor Glanville and Kenny May. The children’s cups were awarded to Rufus Bowie under 5 years, Jemma Kearney 5 – 7 years and Tammy Kearney 8 – 11 years.
The entertainment programme was even more ambitious than last year. We are particularly grateful to Illo-gan Sparnon Silver Band, Illogan Folk Dance Group, Cornish folk groups Hevva, Ros Keltek, Bagas Crowd & Gorvagas and to local rock bands SHED and Kennel. They are all connected to the Parish, many having members from Illogan.
So our parish fair is truly a local event, put on by people from the Parish for the benefit of the Parish.
The hard work of the project group members should also be acknowl-edged. Not only did they improve on last year but they are starting to establish a show that any community would be proud of.
The main project group this year comprised Sylvia Rutishauser James, Andrew Mills, Treve Opie, Joan Opie, Sarah Prouse, Jeanette Tapping, Steve Turner and Mon-ica Wilkes.
We are, of course, grateful to all the other helpers too - too many to list - who gave varying amounts of time but whose contributions were vital to the success of the event. The Parish Fair Project Group members are extremely grateful to all these people but particularly to Illogan Parish Council for their on-going help and support.
Next year will be different. The Illogan School site is being developed to include the new Kernow School. We will still have all the usual attractions, but we will just be doing things a little differently. The person asked to open our fair could be anyone from our Parish, so if you would like to nominate someone to open the fair next year please be sure to let us know why you are nominating them.

THE FRIENDS OF ILLOGAN SCHOOL
The committee and its officers hold regular meetings, usually on the second Tuesday of the month. The aim of The Friends is to raise funds for the School to pay for things that cannot come out of the School budget. These include outdoor play equipment, class trips, prizes for competitions, and supporting School clubs. The Friends hold various fund-raising events throughout the school year, such as the Summer Fete and sponsored walks and bingo evenings. Volunteers are always needed so anyone interested in joining The Friends can have a look at the Illogan School website for details of the next meeting.

The Illogan garden competition was judged on a glorious day in July and the number of entries was similar to 2012,
including some gardens that had not been entered the previous year. After a difficult late spring, the July warmth
promoted some very colourful displays when judge Andrew Tompsett accompanied by Councillor Terry Wilkins did
the rounds on 20 July.
At the prize-giving at the Village Hall on 27 July the results were revealed and the trophies
presented. All who attended enjoyed refreshments prepared by members of the W.I. and our
thanks go to these enthusiastic ladies who are always so willing to support our events.
Overall winners were Mr and Mrs Williams of Ventonraze whose colourful layout and well tended
plants secured top marks, earning them the annual trophies for both their garden and their
hanging baskets and planters. Highly commended certificates were awarded to Mrs Johns of
Warwick Avenue, Mr and Mrs Jenkin of Penwartha Vean, Stanley Hocking of Oxland Road, and
Linda Amess-Hamilton of Clifton Row with her great example of what can be achieved in a small
space.
The junior entries were Jemma and Tammy Kearney of Rainham Close where result where the
judge favoured Jemma, but Tammy’s entry was highly commended.
Illogan School was highly commended for their gardens and a special award was made to Teresa
Davies for her support with the pre-school children.
With more support next year the organisers would like to widen the categories to give more incentive to
people with small gardens. Other special groups might include wildlife-friendly gardens and perhaps
gardens which include ‘grow your own’ vegetables and herbs.

Illogan Pre-School is charity based and run by a committee of parents who want to help make their child’s first taste
of education the best it can be. We run various fundraising events throughout the year from sponsored walks to
table-top sales. The proceeds from these types of events allow us to replace and renew equipment for the children,
and help us to maintain the building and its surrounding garden and play area.

I am delighted to have been asked to provide you with a regular update on Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service’s Camborne, Pool, Redruth and Hayle Emergency Cover programme.
As part of this programme we plan to build a new Camborne, Pool and Redruth Community Fire Station and Service Headquarters facility, to be located at the old Cornwall Hydraulic Services site and adjacent land off Boswithian Road, Tolvaddon. These new facilities are part of a wider programme that will enable us to reach an additional 13,900 people within our ten minute critical response time across the Camborne, Pool, Redruth and Hayle area, as well as delivering required service revenue savings.
I was fortunate to be able to meet with you many of you at our drop in sessions in May and June to discuss our plans. It was great to be able to share these with the local community, answer their questions and address any concerns, and I was really pleased by how positively the plans were received. I look forward to building on these relationships as this work progresses, with one of our aims being that our new facilities become an integral part of the local community.
Our planning application is currently being reviewed by Cornwall Council, with a decision expected in September. If everything goes to plan, I anticipate work starting on site in late 2013/early 2014, with Camborne, Pool and Redruth Community Fire station opening in August 2014 and Service Headquarters opening in November 2014.
I look forward to keeping you updated as this work progresses.

Mobile Phones
A lady has now changed how she lists names on her mobile phone, after her handbag was stolen, which contained her mobile phone, credit cards and wallet. 20 minutes later when she called her husband from a payphone telling him what had happened, he said “I received your text about our pin number, and I replied a while ago.”
Realising what had happened, they rushed to the bank, and were told that a lot of money had been withdrawn. The thief actually used the stolen mobile phone to text ‘hubby’ who was in the contact list, to learn the pin number.
And the moral of the story? Do not disclose relationships between you and the people in your contact list. Try to avoid names like Home, Hubby, Dad, Mum etc. More importantly, avoid texting sensitive information.
Sat. Nav. Systems
Another simple tip but one that might not seem obvious. Don’t put your home address in your Sat. Nav. Put a nearby address known to you like a shop or filling station so that you will still be guided to your home vicinity should it be necessary. If your car is stolen with the Sat. Nav. In it, the thieves have an instant homing device and can ransack your house before you even realise your car is missing!

FAR WALKER’S GROUP The Far Walker's Group has been walking together each Wednesday for more than a year. We now ven-ture further afield than Spar Lane, and take longer routes away from the village. These are more challeng-ing and are of a longer duration, generally in excess of two hours and are equivalent to a Level 3 walk. They will typically include gradients and uneven paths. It is therefore the responsibility of the individual walker to know their own limitations and to consult their G.P. if in any doubt. We walk in all weathers! Transport to the venues is shared, as are the decisions in planning the routes and deciding where we have coffee or which pub to go to for lunch! If you would like to join us please contact:
Active Plus is a ground-breaking initiative funded by the Big Lottery Silver Dreams fund, which trains injured
veterans to provide safety information, group activities and support to older people that have become socially isolat-ed and lonely. The injured veterans are from a variety of backgrounds including military intelligence, Special Forces and regular service roles. All veterans start as unemployed volunteers that suffer with physical injuries or Post Trau-matic Stress Disorder. Many older people become lonely through unemployment, bereavement, illness, disability, family breakdowns or because they are carers. The lack of contact with others can lead to depression, anxieties and other medical issues and vulnerabilities. The project runs one day a week for six weeks and involves sharing some of the veterans’ personal experiences and backgrounds with the group. This helps to break down motivational and confidence barriers that people can face when living alone. The aim is to make older people safer and the veterans provide training and advice in:
First Aid & CPR Fire safety Personal safety Computer awareness Electrical safety Crime prevention Neuro Linguistic Programming
Alongside this, the project includes group and problem-solving activities, promoting communications skills, team-work and a sense of achievement. We aim to promote friendship, discussion, develop peer support and help older people to participate in their community. The injured veterans prove to be highly effective trainers with their natural leadership and skills sets. Participants find them easy to relate to as people who have experienced similar life issues after leaving the services. The empathy and credibility of the veterans in delivering essential personal skills is fundamental to the success of Active Plus. All of our older people that have participated so far have reported improved confidence and motivation and have made more friends.
