Aisyah Hanum Abu Bakar andDr Nik Aloesnita Nik Mohd Alwi
Center for Modern Languages and Human Sciences (CMLHS) recently
hosted Bahasa Melayu for International Students (BMfIS) Program.
The first group involved eight students from Northern Illinois
University (NIU), USA. The students, aged from 24 to 58 years old,
were here to experience and acquire the use of our national
language, the Bahasa Melayu, in authentic settings. Because of the
emphasis on the authenticity, four academic staff from CMLHS were
appointed as the module developers, i.e. Dr Nik Aloesnita Nik Mohd
Alwi, Dr Zailin Shah Yusoff, Ms Normala Samsudin and Miss Aisyah
Hanum Abu Bakar. Professor James T. Collins, the Director of the
South East Asian Studies, NIU engaged as a consultant throughout
this programme. Nine UMP students were assigned as facilitators cum
tutors for this programme.
They were Mohd Hafizuddin Mamat, Wan Nursyazana Wan Suhaimi,
Mohd Fahmi Mohd Rusi, Nurainatul Fatimah Burhanuddin, Wong Kok
Keen, Lai Yew Chong, Shahida Mohd Zain, Nur Azura Karjanto, and
Rozanne Shamini d/o Francis.
Throughout the program, the participants engaged in using Bahasa
Melayu in the natural contexts particularly through communicating
with the locals during their visits to several places in Kuantan,
for example the Kuantan town, Tanjung Lumpur, Pekan and Sungai
Lemg.
During the visits, the participants interviewed and interacted
with the community in Bahasa Melayu. They also tried to do several
hands-on activities for instance, making keropok lekor, ikan masin
and tenunan. The participants were fortunate to have the chance of
experiencing a Malay wedding ceremony to witness the related
culture and tradition, including the gotong-royong
activity carried out prior to the wedding day. The participants
also had the opportunity to enrich their knowledge on Malay
culture, tradition and custom during the stay with their host
families at Felda Lepar Hilir 2, Lepar Hilir, Pahang. This program
helped CMLHS to achieve the target to support the UMP KRAs, which
are KRA 2 (Financial Sustainability) and KRA 4 (Branding for
Strategic Planning). As the organizer, we have gained so much
experiences that we believe we are able to offer more enriching
programs similar to and even better than this in the future.

INSPIRING LEADERSHIP FOR HUMAN ADVANCEMENT MILIEU
My sincerest thanks and praise to Allah the Almighty for His
blessings and consent that the ILHAM bulletin is now published.
This issue is a special edition as it covers the whole years news
and compiled into one publication for the year 2011. My heartfelt
congratulations also go to the editorial team who have worked hard
to materialize this special edition.
The year 2011 had so many sweet and precious moments which are
worth to be captured in images and words. The programs conducted
were all in line with UMP Strategic Planning 2011-2015 which are
categorized under four University Key Result Areas (UKRAs) :
UKRA1: Enhancement of Academic Quality; UKRA2: Financial
Sustainability; UKRA3: Socio-Economic Development and UKRA4:
Branding for Strategic Planning.
For instance, under UKRA 1, CMLHS seized opportunities to be
involved in collaboration with international universities. This is
to strengthen its existence in the education system nationally as
well as in the international arena. The collaboration with
international universities in which we have had so far the Republic
of China, Germany and the United States. Not only we had the
opportunities to exchange ideas with our international counterparts
but also to generate financial income to the university, which is
under UKRA 3.
The Bahasa Melayu for International Students (BMfIS) program
marked the highlight of all events throughout the year. CMLHS has
shown its capability to organise such a big program involving
participants from the Northern Illinois University (NIU), the USA.
The program would not have been possible without a strong
dedication and commitment shown by our staff. The authenticity of
Malay was well portrayed to our guests through genuine
communication with the locals facilitated by our very own UMP
students. Well done to all involved!
The establishment of Mandarin Language and Culture Center in UMP
headed by our CMLHS staff is also evidence that our center is
capable to liaise with international universities. I am very
certain in a very near
future, more strategic collaborations can be materialised as the
success that we have achieved so far are only the beginning of many
more excellent achievements. May CMLHS vision to be a premier
learning center becomes a reality sooner than expected.

supportive throughout the workshop. Indeed, the course
successfully achieved its objective as it demonstrated that with
the knowledge of self-control, champion rises from the ashes of the
phoenix.
Yong Ying MeiThursday - 11 August 2011. From July 20
to August 10, 2011, Mandarin Language and Culture Center (MLCC)
set out an Introductory Mandarin Course for UMP staff. The course,
which was launched by Professor Dr. Abd Jalil Borham, the Dean of
Center of Modern Languages and Human Sciences, is one of MLCC
programmes, under UMP collaboration with Hebei University of China.
The partnership which was officially announced early this year by
Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah, the Deputy Minister of Higher Education,
aims to gauge more interest
and participations among Malaysian students of higher
institutions in learning Mandarin. Therefore, the setting up of the
center in a higher institution like UMP will help to inculcate the
interest among students.
The Dean was positive in his aspiration and hoped that MLCC
would help UMP students to learn Mandarin so that they would be
more competitive in the job market. It will also be an added value
for UMP staff if they are able to converse with the students in the
language in support of the move.
UMP has a plan to develop MLCC into a regional Mandarin Center
for the East coast region. According to the Dean, until now the
center has received three volunteers of Chinese teachers from the
Mainland China.
The course comprised simple Mandarin language patterns and
effective strategies for daily conversations. It was conducted by
Mr Chong Ah Kow, Director of MLCC and Miss Yong Ying Mei, a

years working for the industries, Professor Dr. Badhrulhisham
changed his career path. He thought there was more that he could
contribute in the world of academic and how he could channel the
knowledge and experience gained in the industry into shaping
suitable curriculum for engineering programmes in tertiary
education. He shares his
strong belief in teaching and learning with all our associates
and that he hopes that UMP is able to produce graduates who not
only holds academic excellence but also are futuristic in nature,
highly competent in soft skills and wise to explore opprtunities in
the global arena. In his speech also he highlighted that according
to the most recent research, our UMP graduates are now among the
most sought-after fresh graduates by the key players in the
industries.

Ezihaslinda NgahThursday - 26 May 2011. Moodle or
Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment is a free
source learning platform, which eases learning and teaching
experiences. Owing to this factor, the Modern Language Department
of CMLHS organized a workshop on Moodle and Its Classroom
Application to a group of lecturers. The trainer for the one-day
workshop was Aziman Abdullah, a lecturer from the Faculty of
Computer Systems and Software Engineering. He has been using the
platform for quite some time and is very much passionate about how
lecturers and students should make full use of its application in
the teaching and learning process.
During the workshop, the participants had the opportunity to
have a hands-on training under the Azimans guidance. Some of the
lecturers have already used Moodle and some are very new to the
platform. The training was indeed a beneficial one to all
participants involved as there is so much more that we can explore
in delivering knowledge to students especially in using technology
as a tool. The lecturers expressed their appreciation to the
trainer who has been more than willing to spend his time and
knowledge to train us at the center. It is certain that he will be
invited again if more are interested to know on how to use this
learning platform for their respective courses.

For that, the center first colloquium for 2011, held at UMP Library
Auditorium, had gathered CMLHS associates at a knowledge sharing
session on research conducted by Dr. Yap Chui Yan and Dr. Norrihan
Sulan. Dr. Yap, whose study concentrates on Predictive Effects of
Managerial Need Support, Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction and
Role Overload on Work Management aims to explore whether or not the
relationship between managerial need support and work engagement is
mediated by basic psychological need satisfaction and moderated by
overloaded role.
Whilst, the latter, Dr. Norrihan Sulan shared her study on
Corpus Based Study of Morphological Productivity of English
Language in Chemical Engineering Text Books which focuses on
theories of word recognition. The study proposes decoding and
linguistic comprehension
to be included in reading texts which are deemed to be necessary
for reading success. The colloquium, which was also the fourth of
its kind, was first initiated last year by Professor Dr. Abdul

event for the center to set stage quality research outcomes
especially for those who have just returned from their PhD
studies.

MOODLE AS A TOOL IN CLASSROOM TEACHING AND LEARNING
PUBLISH OR PERISH?
A three day ISI Journal Writing Workshop was conducted at the
CENFED Training Room from 19-21 April 2011. This workshop was
organised by the Center for Modern Languages and Human Sciences and
was open to academicians from all faculties for Day 1 and 2. Apart
from getting a step by step guide on how to get published in an ISI
journal, the speaker, Prof Kamaruzaman Jusoff from Universiti Putra
Malaysia also gave participants feedback on participants own
writings. The esteemed Professor has an impressive curriculum vitae
and serves as Editor-in-Chief/Editorial Board Member of six
international ISI/Scopus/Citation Indexed journals, and
reviewer/referees for many DOAJ/oAo/CIJ papers ranging from arts,
humanities, and social sciences to engineering and sciences. All in
all, though now the choice to publish or perish lies in the hands
of academicians, publishing is still easier said than done.
However, with the strategies and advice obtained from this
workshop, it is not that difficult either. What important is to
start writing, so start writing now!

Pahang (UMP) has successfully organized a self-motivation
program to 160 pupils in six schools, who will sit for the Primary
School Achievement Test (UPSR) this year. The program, conducted by
lecturers from the Center for Modern Languages and Human Sciences
(CMLHS), aimed to encourage the pupils to achieve outstanding
results in examinations, to increase learning motivation and
learning skills and to expose participants to an effective learning
environment. The CMLHS Dean stated that such program is compatible
with the requirements of the current education system to develop
talented and well-balanced beings, in addition to building a better
future. The program, which was conducted by CMLHS Deputy Deans,
Associate Prof. Dr. Muhammad Nubli Abdul Wahab and Dr. Norihan
Sulan, also gave the school pupils the chance to experience a
little bit of campus life. They visited the laboratory of Chemical
Engineering Faculty of Engineering and Natural Resources (FKKSA)
and computer labs at the university.
The children were also demonstrated to the use of Biofeedback
tool, a tool which can be used to identify and overcome stress
problem related to a persons study, life or career. Associate Prof.
Dr. Muhammad Nubli Abdul Wahab has been
conducting research using the Biofeedback tool for years, and he
stated that the tool works just like the practice of yoga. The only
difference between Biofeedback and yoga is that biofeedback
utilises technology in helping to solve human problems. The tool is
able to detect the level of emotional instability which also works
excellently as a therapy in solving students problems.
Ezihaslinda NgahMonday 23 May 2011. As the saying goes, The

Wan Jumani FauziGraduating students either prepare
for job interviews or they prepare to pursue post graduate
degrees. But did they know that they could decide how to dress for
an interview based on a companys website? Did they also know that
taking the IELTS would enable them to work overseas? These are all
interesting morsels of information they would learn if they
participated in any one of the two Finishing School Programmes
offered by the Center for Modern Languages and Human Sciences in
collaboration with International and Academic Affairs Department,
namely Excel in IELTS (7 9 January 2011) or Grooming for Interview
Workshop (8 and 9 January 2011) . The first took place in CMLHS
Mini Theatre and the second was held in CMLHS Lab 10 and 11.
Majority of the students who signed up were not aware that IELTS
(i.e., the Academic Reading Module) was an entry requirement for
post graduate studies in many universities local and abroad. They
also learnt that the test (i.e., the General Training Module)
allowed them to get a job overseas such as in Australia, New
Zealand and the Great Britain. After the three days, the
participants took home strategies on how to face IELTS and ace
it.
As for the Grooming for Interview Workshop, about 80 students
who registered actually went through a comation of three different
workshops. They were (1) From Campus to Corporate Workshop which
was conducted by Wendy Lee from Chapter One Asia Sdn. Bhd. (2)
Resume Writing: The First
Contact Workshop and (3) Interview Success Workshop conducted by
CMLHS Consultancy and Training Unit.
In From Campus to Corporate Workshop, students were asked to
dress as they would for an interview and were given instant
feedback on their attire. They also learnt the difference between
good image and good grooming, that appearance can make a difference
in an interview and at work, how to dress appropriately and stand
out in interviews, appearance wise. Apart from that, they learnt
the appropriate way to give a good handshake as well as dining
etiquette.
In Resume Writing: The First Contact, students learnt the impact
of good and bad grammar, how to customize their resumes for
different positions and organizations. It was a hands-on writing
course and at the end of the workshop, students had their
application letter and CV edited with the assistance of the
workshop trainers and facilitators.
Last but not least, students had to go into a three-part
Interview Success Workshop. The first built students confidence to
communicate in English, the second prepared them for interviews
through role-plays and frequently asked interview questions and the
third was a mock interview session conducted by their respective
faculty lecturers, workshop trainers and facilitators. Students
found this really helpful as they received feedback on their
appearance, resume, and interview skills. Some even went through
this nail-biting experience twice!

What is the best way to link a nations culture other than with
food?
This year, JanPU club enlivened the recent Chinese New Year in
UMP with a touch of aesthetic in Japanese culinary delights,
selling homemade sushi. With the budget of RM 489, the halal
guaranteed cuisine was sold out fast to all sushi enthusiasts in
UMP. Not only the customers had the chance to enjoy sushi but also
were exposed to the culture that surrounds it. The club members on
duty led by Siti Azreena Mohamed and Yvonne Yeo also dressed up in
Yukata which had contributed to the authencity of the atmosphere to
the customers. Indeed, it was a success. The clubs effort paid off
as all the customers favoured the sushi and experienced a taste of
Japanese culture.

KEBARA is one of professional foreign language bodies ever set
up in UMP to cater the need of teaching and learning Arabic. This
club was established in 2010 after UMP team emerged as the champion
for the Arabic category during the 2009 Royal Malaysian
Intervarsity Debating Championship. With Hassanal Haris as the
first president of the club, KEBARA was initiated to educate UMP
students about the language and to recognize the value of the
language as one of the most widely used language in the world and
language of the Quran amongst its members.
Eventually the club has successfully contributed many
achievements to UMP under the advisory of CMLHS associates and
especially ever since Rosjuliana Hidayu Rosli takes up the baton
from her predecessor. From 17 22 December 2010, two debating teams
from the club represented UMP in the 2010 Royal Malaysian
Intervarsity Debating Championship hosted by Universiti Tun Hussein
Onn Malaysia (UTHM). On 29 June 2011 until July 1st, three debating
teams under KEBARA represented UMP for the third Intervarsity
Arabic Debating Championship.
An invitation from IKIM.fm on 27 September 2011 marked the
moment for KEBARA when two civil engineering students from UMP,
Mohd Zulwafi Bahaudin and Shahira Mohd Basir, were invited for the
Inspirasi bersama Warga IPT slot
in that particular radio station. These students demonstrated
excellent communication skills and good command of spoken Arabic
during the interview. Upon an interview question, they admitted
that they did not possess any background in Arabic, yet set in
their determination to learn it by heart once they signed up for
Arabic course in UMP.
During the closing ceremony of Program Diskusi Ilmu bersama
Profesor Dr Sheikh Saad Gawish Tokoh Ilmuan Tafsir and Hadis
Universiti Al-Azhar, Mesir on 5 October 2011, Norziatulhusna Abdul
Basith and Saiful Adnin from KEBARA mesmerised the audience with a
poem recitation entitled Kekasih kita junjungan Nabi Muhammad
s.a.w. Finally, the clubs diary for 2011 was carefully wrapped
with their participation during the third ASEAN Higher Learning
Institutions Arabic Debate Competition at Universiti Sains Islam
Malaysia (USIM) in November. In this championship, UMP was
represented by three students whilst two Arabic language teachers
from CMLHS namely Mohamad Baihaqi Hasni and Rosjuliana Hidayu Rosli
participated as the judges for the competition.
As a whole, it was apparent that our Arabic club has been very
committed in playing their role to provide excellent medium for UMP
students to hone their communication skills in Arabic and to
promote our university at tertiary till international level.
Congratulations to KEBARA for its achievements!

Tuan Sidek Tuan MudaWednesday 29 June 2011. The Colloquium
and Knowledge Management Unit organized a lecture at the
university level. The lecture was delivered by Professor Dr. James
T. Collins, a fluent Malay speaker, who is a Malay Language
Professor and Director of the Center of Southeast Asian Studies at
Northern Illinois University (NIU). He also serves as the Online
Editor for the Multimedia Learners Dictionary of Malay, a special
project of the Education Ministry of the United States since August
2009. His lecture was conducted in conjunction with the Malay
Language for International Students (BMfIS) program, a joint
programme between UMP and NIU. This program began on June 1, 2011
and ended on July 12, 2011. Professor Collins was the anchor man
behind this special UMP-NIU collaborative program and contributed a
great deal of ideas towards the success of this program. The topic
of his lecture was lexicography which attracted interests of many,
including personnel from Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP), the local
media and a few other NGOs who came upon invitation. The
interesting part was that he presented his talk entirely in Malay
and to see an American speaks fluently in Malay was a rare view.
The lecture was also attended by the Vice-Chancellor, several
personnel from the universitys top management, academic and
non-academic associates as well as the students.

THE SPIRIT OF IFTAR
BIO SYNERGY - TRANSFORMING PEOPLE, THRIVING FOR BEST RESULTS
Marziah RamliFriday 9 September 2011 UniK had successfully
hosted CMLHS
Aidilfitri Celebration to signify the end of fasting season of
Ramadhan. The festive occasion not only spurred the spirit of
sharing from the donors but also demonstrated culinary talents
among the staff who generously contributed their time and skills to
prepare the refreshments for the event amidst their hectic
schedule. The programme started with the welcoming speech from the
dean, Prof. Dr. Abdul Jalil Borham. During the 3 hours gathering,
the guests hugely enjoyed all the scrumptious cuisines and drinks
served by each department such as lasagna, curry mee, Puding Raja,
spaghetti, cakes, Malaysian tropical fruits, fresh salads and many
more. The 3 hours celebration was also joined by six new foreign
language teachers from China and German. Our hats off to the
committee and the guests for making the celebration a huge
success.
Ahmad IbrahimOn 29 - 30 July 2011, an overnight training
program on teambuilding gathered all CMLHS associates at DAmbang
Resort, Pekan. The program was organized by Staff Welfare Unit
(UniK) in conjunction with UMP Strategic Plan 2011-2015. The
objectives of the program were to instill team working spirit in
order to achieve synergy among CMLHS associates.
The teambuilding session not only focused on strategies to
thrive the center but also re-energized the associates through
congregational prayer led by the Dean, tazkirah sessions, Al-Quran
recitals and sports activities along the Pahang riverside. All
participants displayed tremendous esprit de corps especially during
the activity where each group was competing to build the highest
tower out using the PVC water pipes and raffia string. The
participants also witnessed the beauty of camaraderie as they
learnt to steer the raffia string
so that their PVC water pipes tower stood higher.
The pinnacle of the program was the session conducted by Y.M.
Raja Ismail Raja Shahadan or fondly known as Pak Engku of Perasa
Management. He touched everyones heart and motivated them for the
betterment with his compelling real-life stories. He said it best
and captured the essence of the teambuilding program as he stressed
on the importance of trust, openness and interdependence to
maintain comradeship.
Marziah RamliRamadhan al-Mubarak, a month not to be wasted with
idle pursuits. With the hope to foster sublime
spirit of Ramadhan, CMLHS associates like other faculties were
grateful to take up the opportunity to host an Iftar for UMP
students and associates. The annual endeavour took place in
universitys mosque and had involved various committees such as
cleaning the raw material, cooking the food, serving the food and
washing the dishes. It is hoped that event like this will be
continued in the future.

Wan Jumani Fauzi and Ezihaslinda NgahThursday 28 July 2011. Get
into Grammar
(GIG)Vaganza is a program organized under the Modern Languages
Department for UHL1312 - English for General Communication course,
which is a compulsory subject for all first year Diploma students,
Semester 0, 2011/2012. The main idea behind the event was to
strengthen the English Language proficiency of students in terms of
grammar and vocabulary. Besides that, the reason for holding such a
program was to change the perception of students towards the usage
of English Language in a more creative, interactive and fun way.
The program, which was held at UMP Sports Complex, began as early
as 7.30 a.m. in the morning and ended around 6.00 p.m. in the
evening were joined by all 536 students and facilitated by all
UHL1312 instructors.
There were a few objectives that (GIG)Vaganza aimed to achieve.
Firstly, (GIG)Vaganza contributed 5% to UHL1312 course evaluation.
Besides that, it also provided a platform to encourage and excite
UHL1312 students to practice the language they have learnt.
Finally, (GIG)Vaganza also attempted to change students perception
towards English grammar which has always been considered as boring
or hard to learn when learning English.
(GIG)Vaganza is a very new event. In fact, this was the first
time such a program was organized
for UHL1312 students. Therefore, the activities were based on
the application of vocabulary and grammar elements which emphasized
students creativity and critical thinking as well as a way to test
their knowledge on grammatical elements. It is hoped that students
would be able to apply all that they have learnt throughout the
semester such as intrapersonal skills, interpersonal skills, and
presentation skills through the (GIG)Vaganza activities. The
program on the whole was a success. The turnout was 100% as all
students who registered for the course attended both sessions,
namely the morning and the afternoon sessions. Feedback received
from the participants showed that the program was able to be the
platform in which they could apply the knowledge gained throughout
the semester. The students who involved themselves both as
organizers and participants claimed that they had the opportunity
to explore English grammar activities in a fun way, and yet could
still benefit a lot from them.
Since it was the first time such program was organized, the
committee faced a number of drawbacks. The main setback of the
program was that there were other internal as well as external
events organized on the same day/in the same week when (GIG)Vaganza
was organized. Overlapping activities and programs namely
Gagasan
Pelajar India 1Malaysia, Program Ikatan Kasih Sentuhan Hati
Karisma UMP, and Success for Co-Curriculum indicated that a number
of students were not able to fully participate in the event due to
their commitment with other events. Therefore, the committee had to
make some adjustments in order to ensure every student had the
opportunity to participate in the event. The (GIG)Vaganza required
the students to prepare for the activities since the very beginning
of the semester and much effort was put into the preparation of the
materials as well as the activities organized. Thus, to not be
present on the day of the event itself is a loss.
Despite encountering some problems on clashing of events on the
day of the (GIG)Vaganza, the event committee was grateful with the
strong support received from the CMLHS management team and
commitment shown by all UHL1312 instructors, the committee members
and the students. The commitment and support have made the program
a success. Most importantly, feedback given by students was
positive and encouraging. Certainly, if the program is to be
conducted again, it will be a blast!

INSPIRING LEADERSHIP FOR HUMAN ADVANCEMENT MILIEU
Husna HashimWednesday 21 September 2011. CMLHS
Women Welfare Unit (HELWA) and Colloquium and Knowledge
Management Unit have worked together to organize a talk on
Individual and Organisational Excellence: The balance of the body
influences your performance, which was delivered by Dr. Norhissam
Mustafa, the Chief Executive Officer of the Institut Perubatan
Komplimentari Islam (Insitute of Islamic Complimentary Medicine)
Malaysia (IP-KI). He is also the principal researcher at the
Laboratory of Islamic Bio-Energiologi (MIBE), and is active in
disseminating to the public about his studys findings, which
emphasizes a holistic perspective, on healthy lifestyle.
Through this talk, CMLHS associates were informed on holistic
lifestyle from the aspects of physiological, mental and spiritual
health. Dr. Norhissam also shared his research findings, which
showed that people are able to improve their health and performance
in life by adopting a healthy lifestyle as recommended in Islam.
His research focuses on overall function of our body system
including the organs and the immune and chemical systems. He also
claimed that a persons health is closely related to ones belief,
moral and everyday practices. System of belief or faith, which is
formed in the bodys immune system, can help fight any threat to our
body or health. Daily practices of ones religious practice help
keep the organs and body healthy. Functions of the body will be at
the optimal level if the organs are healthy and functioning
properly. For Muslims, the most important practice which can
stimulate the whole body system is prayer, which can be regarded as
the essence to the human body. Commendable character he further
said is essential to our body chemistry system as it secretes the
enzymes needed at the right time and rate. On the other hand, a
weak physiological system could lead to deficiencies in the
personal, moral and practice.
This two-hour talk held at the UMP library auditorium has
provided an insight to the audience, especially from the
perspective of health care. Health depends on lifestyle. Therefore,
let us all practise a proper lifestyle of good health which will
guarantee the success in career as well as personal life.

INSPIRING LEADERSHIP FOR HUMAN ADVANCEMENT MILIEU
Dr. Fatmawati LatadaMost of us know that the Soft Skills
department is responsible to organize all Soft Skills programs;
yet not many of us really understand how the department operates
and how eventful it has been for the whole year. Before we proceed
to the 2011 program report let us see a brief introduction about
Soft Skills program in UMP.
Soft Skills in UMP has two forms: standalone programs and
embedded. The standalone programs are courses which comprises the
Fundamental Soft Skills (UHS1021) and the Industrial Soft Skills
(UHS2021). The fundamental Soft Skills expose students to the seven
elements recommended by the ministry. The advanced Soft Skills
invite experts from the industries to share their knowledge and
experiences on the importance of Soft Skills in the industries.
Additionally, the embedded programs collaborate with UMP faculties,
centers and departments to evaluate students application of Soft
Skills in their domains.
CMLHS took the challenge in making sure the courses offered are
within the requirement
of the Ministry of Higher Education as well as meeting the
industrial needs. The ultimate goal of the program is to expose UMP
students to the skills needed to effectively encounter any
challenges in life.
Soft Skills Programs for 2011
This section will describe the standalone programs organized
throughout the year. First, lets us concentrate on the fundamental
Soft Skills. The Fundamental Soft Skills or Soft Skills 1 is
divided into two modules; UHS1011 and UHS1021. For last year alone,
for both modules, we have successfully handled 3459 participants
including those registered in semester 0, 2011/2012.
The UHS1011 is the old version of Soft Skills 1; it contains two
sessions of enhancement programs coupled with an embedded
assessment. We have organized 11 series of such programs in
Semester 1 and 6 series in Semester 2.
The UHS1021 is the new version of Soft Skills 1 where a student
has to attend eight series of classes, one enhancement and a days
worth of workshop. The participants of the UHS1021 are students who
joined the university in 2011
onwards. For Soft Skills 2 or the Industrial Soft Skills,
we have successfully handled 2046 students who participated in 4
series of industrial seminar in Semester 1 and 6 series in Semester
2. Topics highlighted in this seminar are critical thinking and
problem solving, spiritual and emotional intelligence, conflict and
change management also coaching and mentoring. The ideas of having
industrial seminars were meant to stimulate dialogue between
students and experts from the industries, and it did fairly work in
some series.
The standalone programs were successfully done as scheduled. Yet
there are still rooms for improvement. The embedded assessment on
the other hand, was not smooth in the first semester. Nevertheless,
it improved (in a very small scale) during the second semester. The
possible reasons for that were the commitment of the Soft Skills
coordinators at faculty level coupled with the two series of
workshops and awareness tours organized by the department.
Definitely, with the cooperation and commitment of lecturers and
coordinators at faculties, centers and departments we hope to see a
significant improvement in 2012.

Saturday 19 November 2011. Children are our future, and helping
the orphans are essential to provide supports and encouragement to
these children. Acknowledging this, the Human Sciences Department
of CMLHS organized a series of community service programs as part
of the requirement for the Islamic and Asian Civilization course
(TITAS). The program known as University-Community Service Program
took place at Tengku Ampuan Fatimah Childrens Home, Kuantan. The
event was officiated by our benevolent Dean, Professor Dr. Abdul
Jalil Borham. There were eight orphanages around Pekan and Kuantan
involved in the program which included Rumah Anak Yatim Penyayang,
Pekan and Rumah Anak Yatim Al-Insyirah, Kuantan. Altogether, 200
UMP students who enrolled in TITAS course participated in
conducting the activities for the children such as motivational
programs, gotong-royong and sports. The participants commitment
paid off. They gain priceless experience and the children love all
the activities.
