1. Welcome and introductions - Peter

Peter thanked Brenda Boyle and Al Ain Colleges for hosting the meeting and their generous

hospitality. Peter welcomed everyone to the meeting including all the new members and paid tribute

to all the ILC Coordinators who left or moved positions over the summer: Alan Pollock; Darcy

Harris; Janice Coats; Nick Fallows and Swapneela Koul. Peter thanked them for their valuable

contribution to the ILC Group including their ILC action plan projects and dedication to the ILCs/SSCE

at HCT. They will be sorely missed and we wish them all the best in their future ventures.

3. ILC PD Day during PD Week - Peter

A proposed ILC PD day during PD week (4-8 Jan 2015) was discussed. Coordinators were asked to

submit their ideas for an ILC PD Day online. A Dyslexia support workshop has been offered to ILC

Coordinators on Wednesday 07/01/15 by the FWC counsellor Marie-Anne Glavan and FWC

Foundations faculty Abbey Abdul.

4. ILC Action Plan Project 2013-14 Final Reports by Team Leaders (TL)

4. HCT ILC Strategic Plan 2012-17 Final Report – Louise

Project aims:

The aim of the project was to create an ILC strategic framework aligned with the HCT Strategic Plan

2012- 2017.

Project outcomes:

� Review of the HCT Strategic Framework

� Decisions made which strategies and initiatives were appropriate to align with HCT ILCs.

� Creation of a template with the following information:

� Individual ILCs completed their portion of the template.

� First draft produced for fine-tuning.

Notes:

o Initiatives commenced

o Proposed initiatives

� Many new ILC Co-ordinators this year, so what happens at a local level may change.

� The framework is a first draft and will need to be regularly updated.

5 ILC Marketing Plan Final Report – Danville

Project aims:

� Marketing ILC activities to the broader management of HCT, including the campus directors, and

CS management.

� Marketing ILC activities campus wide.

� Marketing ILC activities within the ILC coordinators’ group.

Project outcomes:

The HCT ILC website http://hctilcs.weebly.com/ was designed to promote the Independent Learning

Centre resources, services and best practice to the HCT community and raise the profile of

Independent Learning Centre locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. The site is fully mobile

compatible and displays on iPhones, iPads and other smartphones.

The site’s landing page (below) offers visitors an ILC one-stop shop:

6. ILC Best Practices Final Report – Peter

Project outcomes:

A total of 22 ILC Best Practices were submitted last year with the majority of colleges represented.

Submissions ranged in complexity from” iPad App of the Week” to “Setting up an Online Learning

Zone (OLZ)” The target audience/beneficiaries covered all levels from Pre-foundations to Masters

and all subjects. All 6 HCT strategic directions were addressed. The time required to set-up and

implement the best practice ranged from an hour to a whole semester.

7. New Learning Zone/Knowledge Centre at DMC – Andy

Andy briefed everyone on the exciting new, state of the art 15,000 sq. ft Knowledge Centre Learning

Zone at DMC , due to open January 2015. The proposed space is in the existing outside corridor which

will be closed with solid walls/glass partitions. The Collaborative Zone and Creative Zone will both be

open, flexible and bright with flexible furniture and wall mounted video screens and writable walls.

8. Dubai Colleges Learning Zone Website demo – Andy

Andy demod Dubai Colleges Learning Zone website http://calmdc.com/lz/wp/ highlighting the

various sections such as College 101, Instructional Videos, Applied Research Basics, Foundations

Vocabulary, Library Help Videos.

9. ILC Action Plan Ideas 2014/5 – ALL

For this year’s annual ILC Action Plan Projects Peter suggested conducting some quantitative research

(for accreditation and marketing purposes) on ILCs via a student questionnaire that coordinators can

administer locally, selecting from a bank of survey questions submitted by the ILC group (us!). Peter

requested ILC Coordinators contribute questions to the bank. The format can be a typical five-level

Likert statements (eg I am satisfied the technology available in the ILC meets my needs (Strongly agree,

Agree, Neither agree nor disagree, Disagree, Strongly disagree) and/or Checkbox questions ( I visit the

ILC to.... Study as part of my class with my teacher, Study alone, Relax etc) and/or open ended

questions (eg What could the ILC offer in the future?)

ACTION - Peter to send out online suggestion form. ALL to submit questions for the question

bank.

Other projects suggested included ILCs testimonials from teachers and students to publish on the HCT

ILC website, with a goal of every ILC submitting 2 or 3. Abu Dhabi Men’s, Fujeriah Men’s and RBSAM

Naval College already have great examples on the HCT ILC website http://hctilcs.weebly.com/why-

Another proposal was devising an inter-college Spelling Bee based on the Oxford 3000 word list for

Foundations students using Visual Thesaurus (ILC subscription software).

10. ILC Peer Review Prgm – Brenda, Louise and Danville

The aim of the ILC Peer Review Prgm is to:

� Provide a ‘critical friend’ assessment of our ILCs

� Identify areas for improvement within our ILCs

� Support change and improvement within our ILCs

� Facilitate the exchange of ideas and good practice

� Showcase individual ILCs internally and system-wide

Brenda, Louise and Danville presented their findings the following ILCs:

� ILC Peer Review of KBZ - Brenda

� ILC Peer Review of ADW – Louise

� ILC Peer Review Naval College – Danville

A total of 5 ILC Peer Reviews have been completed over the last 12 months.

ACTION

Peter to publish ILC Peer Reviews reports in the ILC Annual Report.

ALL requested to submit their preference to which ILCs they’d like to peer review this

academic year.

11. HCT Teaching & Learning Handbook ideas - ALL

David Kennedy has requested volunteers to contribute/produce fun activity ideas/activities that can

be used for f2f and online professional development to support the new HCT Teaching & Learning

Handbook

ACTION – ALL requested to submit their interest online.

11. New Clarity Software Ideas

Clarity have approached our group inviting a wish list from us of potential new English language

learning related Apps we would like to see developed.
