Il Trovatore
The Met: Live in HD has come to the 10th season! Since its inception in 2006, the series has become a global phenomenon with, so far,
87 performances in 2,000 venues before 17 million audience worldwide. This season will start with a revival of Il Trovatore, Verdi's
grand opus on love, obsession, jealousy and revenge.
There is an old cliche about the only thing necessary to stage Verdi's "Il Trovatore" is the "four greatest singers in the world." Therefore,
the Metropolitan Opera brought a superb cast to fulfill this requirement. Anna Netrebko is singing Leonora, a role she has dominated in
Europe. She showed a rich, dark-hued sound, and brought beautiful and intricate coloration in all her singing. It's not surprising that
Anna Netrebko is showered with applause the moment she walks on stage.
Dmitri Hvorostovsky, the superstar baritone playing Count di Luna, announced over the summer that his doctors had identified a tumor
in his brain. But, he managed to interrupt the hospitalization in order to return to the Met to sing the role he first sang in 2009.
Hvorostovsky was also greeted with thunderous applause upon his first appearance on stage, a showstopping moment that literally
forced conductor Marco Armiliato to put down his baton and join in the clapping. His return seems to inspire him to give the white-hot
performance opera fans dream of.
Dolora Zajick has owned the role of the vengeful Azucena since her 1988 Met debut and her performance simply gets better and better
with age. Her interpretation is commented as "the best of modern times".Young and promising tenor Yonghoon Lee sings as Manrico,
the mysterious trovatore. He has given a breakthrough performance.
Few operas can be as emotionally rousing as Il Trovatore, and with the stellar cast the Metropolitan Opera has put together, the raw
passion of the music burns anew. Come to the cinemas to enjoy this show.

Background
The Met: Live in HDHong Kong 2015-2016 Season
Anna Netrebko as Leonora
"her vocal command is as assured as ever"
- Wilborn Hampton, Huffington Post
"Netrebko basically knocked everything out
of the park vocally"
- David Shengold, Opera News
Dmitri Hvorostovsky as Count di Luna
"The deafening ovation greeting his big aria, "Il balen del suo sorriso," toward
the end of the first half of the opera, was well deserved, for neither illness
nor enforced absence from the theater had dimmed his hauntingly beautiful
voice and gallant Verdian style"- James Jorden, Observer
"that aria was sublime, a passionate rendition that showcased his spiced
caramel tone and arching, seemingly endless phrases that have made him one
of the most treasured baritones of his generation."
- Eric C. Simpson, New York Classical Review
3
Yonghoon Lee as Manrico
"An admirably plausible romantic figure onstage, Lee varied dynamics,
and the softer accents of "Ah si, ben mio" and the final duet with
Azucena suited him well." - David Shengold, Opera News
"winning, passionate and convincingly youthful"
- Michael Tanner, The Spectator

IL TROVATORE An opera by Giuseppe Verdi
Dolora Zajick as Azucena
"The powerhouse mezzo-soprano Dolora Zajick, who made her 1988 Met
debut in this opera as Azucena, still owns this role"
