Project Description
IIWC-LMTV01/Abu Hurairah Orphan House/
Salatiga City-Central Java/Kids, Edu/Any date except July 2015 /18+/1 vols
Abu Hurairah orphanage is one of moslem orphanages located in Salatiga (2 hours by bus from
Semarang city center) with 65 children living in this orphanage. This orphanage serves the function as
a place to stay for the children as well as to have education at least up to senior high school (in most
cases up to the children reach the age of 18 years old). Most of children are orphan but many of them
are also coming from poor family background that cannot afford for the children's education.
The needs that we identified from this project are: capacity building for the children to increase their
self-confidence, inter cultural learning, additional English classes, and skill development for the
children.
Please note that the orphanage has 3 parts; 2 in Kauman (girls orphanage and for boys aged from 6-15
years old) and Soka part (for older boys). The volunteer’s placement will depend on the need and
decision of the orphanage, either the volunteer will go to Kauman or Soka part.
Project: Volunteers will organize additional English lessons for the children in the afternoon and
evening (the children live separately between girls and boys). During the weekend or holiday, the
volunteers can also organize additional fun activity for capacity building and self-confidence raising.
Because of the limited time that the volunteers can spend to have activities with the children (most
children will go to schools in the morning), the
project will be also combined with school projects
where the children are going to.
Work: Organizing additional English lesson for the
children in the afternoon, organizing English classes
at schools in the morning where the children are
going to, organizing different kind of skills
development activities like cooking, drawing, music,
etc, organizing intercultural night for example movie
nights or other cultural performances together with
the children.
Accommodation: in the orphan house together with the children. The volunteers will have their own
room with an Indonesian shared bathroom and toilet, simple matters and closet, shared kitchen or
else the volunteer will be accommodated in the boarding house close to the orphanage.

Borobudur Village, Magelang, Centra Java/World Heritage Education/ any date except July 2015
/18+/2vols
Project: The world heritage volunteer program which is under the framework of the UNESCO World
Heritage Education Program was officially launched in 2008. The activity initiated is still only in the
form of international work camp highlighting the raising awareness about the necessity to protect,
preserve and promote cultural and natural heritage in general and the inscribed or potential world
heritage sites in particular.
The project furthermore aims at demonstrating the value of non-formal education as an approach to
disseminate the values and expertise developed at the inter-governmental level to a large public and
to young people in particular.
It is also aiming at exploring opportunities for a dynamic dialogue between the heritage and education
expert involved in the promotion and protection of the sites and the volunteers and youth groups
developing concrete world heritage projects to be carried out.
In general, the patrimonito projects are expected to:
− sensitise the international and local volunteers, the local community as well as the concerned
authorities around issues related to World Heritage;
− increase the contribution by youth and voluntary service organizations to WH promotion and
preservation with activities planned, based on the concrete needs of the site and in coordination
with the site management and local/national authorities;
− create and strengthen synergies between the local youth organisation and the local community,
site management, national and local authorities and link cooperation to the issue of sustainable
development.
Indonesia International Work Camp has been carrying on the patrimonito project since 2008 by
organizing Borobudur International Camp. The activity was organized based on the need of the
awareness raising among the youth in protecting, promoting and preserving the world heritage site in
Indonesia especially in Borobudur Temple.
In 2009, the 2 weeks international work camp had successfully established a network of senior high
school students under the frame of: The Young Guardian for Borobudur temple. The project was also
launching an awareness campaign in the temple area involving the Young Guardian for Borobudur
temple and the visitors, creating educational materials in 5 different languages for the visitors to
protect and preserve the world heritage site, making posters for campaign and actively outreaching
visitors for short discussion about the future expectation of the visitors toward the existence of the
temple.
Seeing the positive results from the activity and the high motivation of the students involving in the
network, as well as the commitment from the students, local people, local stage holder and IIWC in

IIWC-LMTV11/ Support Children Living at Tegalrejo Red District Area/

/18+/3 vols
Project: Vulnerable group especially less fortunate children in the city area and sub-urban area with
various backgrounds is not yet holistically supported by the government or by other formal
institutions in Indonesia. Children living in a prostitution area potentially experience daily lives with
less non-formal educative interaction and space for playing with their peers. In Tegalrejo Prostitution
area situated in Semarang region uptown the city live more than 15 children with this less advantage
situation. Based on this fact, IIWC is fully aware that there is a need of comprehensive support address
this issue. As an NGO organizing IVS projects in Indonesia, IIWC observed that IVS projects with long
term goal involving all stakeholders could be one of best solution of this issue. So, since 2006 IIWC has
started some IVS actions for children living in Tegalrejo prostitution area by organizing annual bilateral

IIWC-LMTV15/YPAC School for Disabled Children/
Semarang, Central java/ Kids, Special Education / any date except July 2015/18+/2vols
Project : Your project will take place in YPAC a school for disabled
children in Semarang and there are 16 YPAC all over Indonesia. Initially it was intended to take care of
the handicapped children suffering from poliomyelitis. But since 1969 YPAC has extended its services
Page 24
Page | 24

Page 24
to children suffering from Cerebal Palsy. As a consequence, at this moment YPAC provides services for
both types of handicap, e.g physiothheraphy for the physically handicapped and mental education for
the mentally handicapped children. It has also facilities for other physical and mental retardation such
as speech theraphy, occupational theraphy , music theraphy, etc. Since 1981 the institutes has also
provided the education for the mentally retarded in the afternoon. The objectives of YPAC is to help
the handicapped children who suffer from Poliomyelitis and Cerebral Palsy which includes their
health, education and social welfare so they can stand on their own and they do not become the
burden of the society. YPAC is located in the city center of Semarang, where you can find easily
internet cafes, swimming pool and some universities and other public facilities.
Works :
The work you will do in the YPAC will be depend on your skills and motivation in which part (kind of
services you would like to choose ). If volunteer have a background of medical, they can help in
medical services, teaching background in the educational services and other in other services
togteher with the staff based on the project schedule of YPAC. Generally is helping the staff run their
activities. But there are additional things that you can do there, the other idea are :
1. Organizing and managing any activities or an additional English classes in the afternoon with
the children who stay in the dormitory.
2. Having club of activities (for example drama, music, drawing, etc) with the children in spare
time
3. Character building of the children by organizing outside activities in holiday for the children.
4. Supporting the skill development of the children together with the staffs in the dormitory or
school.
Notes:
1. Organizing and managing additional English
classes in the afternoon with the children who
stay in the dormitory.
After the school time (also at YPAC), the
children mostly do not have many things to
do. Some children go back to their home,
some of them go back to the dormitory and
spend the time naping and wait the sunset for
evening activities.
Additional English (or other languages) is very
needed because English is considered to be
very important at school, but also very
difficult for the children. To do this program,
volunteer can discuss it with he staff who
responsible in the dormitory.
2. Having club activities
Besides additional English lesson, volunteer can also organize club activities with children to
grow their talents like music, drawing, singing or others. This aims to grow the talents of the
children and give them space to express themshelves through positive activities. Volunteer can
do this together with he educational services.
Page 25

Page 25
3. Character building for the children
The defable children mostly having low self esteem and confidence. It happens because most
of them are coming from disable condition in physic or mentally. Then the discrimination
among friends often happens as well. Thus, building characters for the children will be very
necessary to increase the self confident.
So, activities like out bound or other out door activities for group and personal charactert
building can be organized by the volunteers during their stay. Weekend or holiday period of the
children will be a good time to do these activities.
4. Supporting the skill development of the children
Based on the objectives of YPAC, that the goals is that the children can stand on their own and
not become burden of the society, so it is important to give some skills (working togetehr with
workshop staff )
This skill development is aimed to prepare the children with sufficient skills so that they can be
independent in the future. Hence, it will be very nice for the children if the volunteers can also
introduce easy, simple, applicable and sellable skills to the children like making cookies, making
dried foods, candies, or others.
