22 nd IIWC International Symposium Wooden Heritage Conservation: beyond disciplines 30 th September – 2 nd October, Bilbao Since the ICOMOS International Wood Committee (IIWC) was established in 1975, the need for a set of conservation principles has been a continuous theme in the Committee’s ongoing discussions and activities. In the of the 19th General Assembly of ICOMOS held in Delhi on 15th December 2017 the new IIWC ‘Principles for the Conservation of the Wooden Built Heritage’ were adopted as ICOMOS doctrinal text. These new ‘Principles’ replace those adopted previously in 1999. Last year, the 21st IIWC Symposium held in York was a multidisciplinary forum for the interchange of experience, ideas, and knowledge of ‘New Horizons’ in the conservation of wooden built heritage as embraced in the new ICOMOS ‘ Principles’ adopted in 2017. This year we want to take a step further with the organization in the Basque country of a symposium and a course that amplifies the progress made in York and focus on the holistic approach to wooden heritage conservation that extends beyond structures to include its complex intangible side together with the materiality of wood construction. The scope of the Symposium and Course will include the diversity of professions involved, possible approaches and processes from a global perspective, and their adaptations to the conservation of local wooden heritage. We are hoping to create a forum to reveal, exchange and discuss different theories, including processes, methodologies and intervention techniques in wooden heritage from different points of view through different disciplines but with a common goal which includes every specialism involved (carpenters, engineers, architects, archaeologists, historians, wood scientists, administrators and stakeholders).

22nd IIWC International Symposium
Wooden Heritage Conservation: beyond disciplines
30th September – 2nd October, Bilbao
Since the ICOMOS International Wood Committee (IIWC) was established in 1975, the need for a set
of conservation principles has been a continuous theme in the Committee’s ongoing discussions
and activities.
In the of the 19th General Assembly of ICOMOS held in Delhi on 15th December 2017 the new
IIWC ‘Principles for the Conservation of the Wooden Built Heritage’ were adopted as ICOMOS
doctrinal text. These new ‘Principles’ replace those adopted previously in 1999.
Last year, the 21st IIWC Symposium held in York was a multidisciplinary forum for the interchange
of experience, ideas, and knowledge of ‘New Horizons’ in the conservation of wooden built
heritage as embraced in the new ICOMOS ‘Principles’ adopted in 2017.
This year we want to take a step further with the organization in the Basque country of a
symposium and a course that amplifies the progress made in York and focus on the holistic
approach to wooden heritage conservation that extends beyond structures to include its complex
intangible side together with the materiality of wood construction. The scope of the Symposium
and Course will include the diversity of professions involved, possible approaches and
processes from a global perspective, and their adaptations to the conservation of local wooden
heritage.
We are hoping to create a forum to reveal, exchange and discuss different theories, including
processes, methodologies and intervention techniques in wooden heritage from different points
of view through different disciplines but with a common goal which includes every specialism
The ICOMOS International Wood Committee (IIWC) organizes an annual International Scientific Symposium. In 2019, the event will be held in Bilbao, and with the title Wooden Heritage Conservation: beyond disciplines, it is aimed to extend its scope including the diversity of professions involved, possible approaches and processes, from a global perspective and their adaptations to the conservation of local wooden heritage.
In this context, and for the first time, the IIWC is organising an international course on Wooden Heritage Conservation, which covers a range of interdisciplinary topics and a number of outstanding local and international conservation experiences.
The targeted audience is the broadest possible, including a wide range of professionals, institutions of the heritage conservation field, both local and international. With the aim to improve the experience of the participants, the two-day course has been designed to give room to the exchange of experiences among lecturers and participants. In addition, it will include a one-day visit to some of the most interesting wooden heritage conservation interventions of the region, with explanations given by the authors of those interventions and lecturers of the course participating in it.
The course will allow for exchanges and discussion about the IIWC Principles and the diversity of their application in different cultures and contexts.
