History:
In the mid 1960s, a proposal to set up an Institute under the name of "Institute for Planning andAdministration of National Economy" was forwarded to Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, Prime
Minister of India and Chairman, Planning Commission, Government of India. A study tour wasundertaken under Dr. M. K. Chaudhuri's commission during 1964-65 to acquire first hand
knowledge about the working of similar institutions in Europe. A working paper on Regional
Planning was circulated under the name of "Indian Institute of Planning" in 1969.
After resigning from Professorship at IIM (Indian Institute of Management) Bangalore, and after
having been a Professor at XLRI Jamshedpur, Dr. Chaudhuri took over as Research Professor
and founder Director of IIPM in 1973. Incidentally, Dr. Chaudhuri has also been the founderdirector of management courses at IMT Ghaziabad. At IIPM, the first residential full-time Post-
Graduate Diploma Programme commenced on 12th August 1974, with students selected through
admission tests and interviews held in New Delhi, Calcutta, Bombay & Bangalore. IIPMpioneered the all India admission procedure by holding admission tests and interviews in 15
(Calcutta), Chandigarh, New Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Lucknow, Chennai, Patna &Trivandrum. The institute has, through the experiences of the past decades, accumulated a vast
and massive base of knowledge and learning. It has grown in the areas of activities, at the same
time maintaining a close connection with various competencies that have working synergies with
the core management education area. IIPM's activities now range from education & ruraldevelopment programmes to management consulting, public relations, marketing consulting,
research, training & development, human resources consulting & media consulting.
Miision:
The Indian Institute of Planning and Management has set before it the twin tasks: (1) to reorienteducation and research towards the needs of both the private and public (government) sectors
and (2) to establish the link between the national economic planning and the development of
private enterprises in our country. The Indian Institute of Planning and Management aims at
initiating training and research on problems of development that must be solved for realizing
planned national objectives. Unfortunately education in India has still remained primarilyoriented towards the needs of the private sector and has overlooked the specific requirements of
the public sector. India has even failed to do justice to the private sector by not properlyformulating the basic framework within which they should operate. The scope and role of the
Indian private sector, in the context of national economic planning, is quite distinct from that of
the foreign private sector firms operating in free market economies originally developed through
colonial exploitation.
Problems of development of the private and the public sectors are, therefore, to be studied and
analyzed carefully in the background of national economic planning. Otherwise, India would notbe able to translate the laudable goals of plans into physical realities, however sophisticated the
planning models may be. Despite the basic differences that exist between the private and thepublic sector, once the strategy for planned development has been formulated, both the sectorsmust draw up their operational plans in a complementary way to realize the planned objectives.
Otherwise, India may find the public and the private sectors working at cross-purposes.
Undertaking objective commitments towards these goals, IIPM has set up various Centers to
objectively support these goal oriented commitments. Foundations like the Great Indian DreamFoundation also are examples of the effectiveness that such movements can bring about.
As an educational institute, IIPM aims at developing a three dimensional personality in our
students. (1) Pursuit of knowledge, (2) commitment to economic, social and cultural uplifting of
masses and (3) cultivation of taste for literature, fine arts etc. IIPM's success is seconded by our
turning out leaders and entrepreneurs year after year who are committed to the Indian masses andare so urgently needed by the country.

Dean's Message
Professor Arindam Chaudhuri, renowned management guru & economist; Dean, Center
for Economic Research & Advanced Studies
We need to understand that sustainable growth can be achieved only by committing ourselves to
macro level growth strategies that would encompass the bottom 80% of the population and not just the top 20%. This conscientious approach would make a growth rate of 12% per capita per
annum possible. In the light of globalization of the Indian economy and capitulation of Indian

brands, it is imperative for tomorrow's leaders to be aware of the above mentioned facts, so that
they can face the emerging global challenges of international markets with confidence, whileremaining committed to remove massive poverty of Indian masses within a generation. While
some wealthy nations enjoy the luxury of material of plenty, the fact remains that more than
twice the number of people killed in the 2nd world war die every year of hunger and curable
diseases. And yet we fail to realize that unrestricted satisfaction of all desires is not conducive tohuman well being! Nor is it the way to happiness, or for that matter, even maximum pleasure!!
When the wealthy nations today talk of 'being one' with the rest of the world, and of concepts of
global village, their talks simply border on hypocrisy. The time has come for India to lead theway in showing that this carnage can be stopped with the help of determined leadership and long
term committed vision. The Indian managers need to develop a strong vision for their companies,
and most importantly, for the people who work for them, apart from having a terrific sense of commitment for the country, great motivational skills and leadership qualities. A growth rate of
12% per capita per annum would imply that India can beat U.S.A. in terms of purchasing power
parity within the next 25 to 30 years and become economically the strongest country in the
world. For this, the Government of India needs to support the Indian organizations with suitable
pro-people & pro-India policies, which would help Indian organizations in becoming stronger tocompete in the world market successfully. Future leaders must be aware of this and not remain
intellectually handicapped. IIPM strives for these commitments and continuously endeavours toeducate its students and clients on these issues with the belief that sooner than later, structured
economic independence can be achieved through a coordinated effort...
IIPM Academics > Faculty

The IIPM programme is today regarded as the only course with a wider coverage than MBA courses
taught anywhere else in the world because of its integration with National Economic Planning and a
compulsory Marketing Specialization making it the most intellectually stimulating course in India. In the
light of globalization, IIPM aims to create a new generation of entrepreneurial managers, who can face
with confidence emerging challenges of international markets, while remaining committed to remove
massive poverty masses within a generation. For this, we must achieve a growth rate of 14% and more
of the national economy and engineer market extension and social entitlements favouring the bottom
80% of the population. This is essential for corporate growth rate of the same order & more. Future

2-year full time Programme in National Economic Planning and Entrepreneurship
(leading to the award of the MBA degree from IMI)
This is the renowned two year full time Master's residential program that leads to the award of the MBA
degree from the International Management Institute, Belgium, one of the Europe's leading business
schools. Offered currently at the Asian (New Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Chennai, Ahmedabad &
Hyderabad) campuses of IIPM, students have the option of transferring their credits to IMI Belgium and
continuing their studies there. Students study core subjects in the first year related to various areas like
economy. That is why business expands much more rapidly in China compared with expansion of
business seen in India in the past. Knowledge of national economic planning potentiality will encourage
the owners of capital to demand collectively the raising of living standards of the people at the bottom.
IIPM’s Entrepreneurship program is superior to standard MBA programs as it also develops certain
entrepreneurial qualities in program participants. These helps to remove aversion to calculated risk
taking, imbued with ambition beyond normal career growth. Personal ambition in tune with social vision
makes an entrepreneur reach out beyond boundaries again and again. Work remains no work, but
hobby. Failures are looked upon as inevitable intermediate stages to success.
The IIPM programme further includes a compulsory specialisation in Marketing- wherein all the the 20
plus papers of Marketing are compulsory for all students. Adittionally students chose another elective
like Finance or H.R. etc. This stems from the firm conviction that IIPM holds that BUSINESS IS
MARKETING. This has also resulted in IIPM bringing out the best selling magazine 4Ps Business &
Marketing- which has the same punch line i.e. Business is Marketing.
What perhaps is the most difficult part of the IIPM progaramme to be explained in words is the
tremendous change in personality and life on the whole the IIPM course brings about thanks to its
special focus on Executive Communication which is a 4 credit per trimester course running throughout
the course duration. As a part of this course students typically have to participate compulsarily in more
than 40 competitive debates and extempores under the eagle eyes of IIPMs world-class communication
faculty members. The end result is a supremely confident and exstremely smart personality which can
speak from any public platform fearlessly.
IIPM also offers a unique Global Opportunity and Threat Analysis (GOTA) program, through which
students are taken abroad for a period of 10-20 days, wherein the students get to attend lecture
sessions at leading academic institutions and organisations like World Trade Organisation, United
Nations, World Bank, Credit Suisse, Nestle, etc. This allows them to widen their horizon in understanding
various forces of globalisation through experiential learning.
Further, under the Global Outreach Program, IIPM invites distinguished faculties from leading global
institutions like Harvard, Wharton, Columbia, Chicago, Yale, London School of Economics, Oxford,
Cambridge, IMD Lausanne, INSEAD, etc., to come down to India to interact with IIPM students. All this
put together make the IIPM course better than any other course of a similar nature in India.
