Voluntary activity:
Listed as a reviewer in the AGWAT List of Reviewers for 2011(is available at
Science Direct).
Member of the board of the Faculty of Agriculture, Menoufia University, Egypt for
1995/1996, 2001-2004, 2011/2012.
Research interests:
Study on optimizing and recycle the water in agriculture, and on prediction of the
impact that those waters will have on the soil properties and soil productivity.
My research interests emphasize the study of the crop available soil-water in relation
to soil physical properties, salinity, water table, overburden pressure, and soil shrink-
swell. To study the soil water availability and soil water dynamics in root zone, it is
necessary to curried out in relation to the following studies:
* Swelling kinetics and shrinkage processes in alluvial clay salt-affected soils.
* Effect of the envelope (overburden) pressure on the capillary-sorption potential of
water in swelling soils.
*Contribution of shallow water table to moisture in the soil root zone.
* Study of physical properties of soil surface seal regarding soil conservation and
water runoff. In particular, study of the aggregate size and geometry in relation to soil
loss, porosity and surface sealing where the soil erosion is closely linked and
controlled by soil aggregate stability, while surface sealing is a direct result of
aggregate breakdown and detaching soil particles from the surface.
7
On the other hand, pore space in soil and its intrinsic properties such as permeability,
pore size distribution, surface area, roughness, tortuosity, and connectivity are
probably the most important parameters controlling water movement, hydraulic
conductivity, and microbial activity in soils.
It is interesting to study the significance of soil pores regarding water storage and
conductivity and assumed certain formulas that can be use to predict the hydraulic
conductivity in relation to pore size distribution in unsaturated soils. There is many
considerable efforts have been devoted to the indirect estimation of the hydraulic
properties from data that can be measured more easily or are already available. We
examined the soil moisture retention curve as applied to obtain drainable and capillary
pores and unsaturated-soil hydraulic conductivity models as well as to estimate the
irrigation scheduling. Also, water vapor adsorption isotherms are used to deduce the
soil specific surface area (external and internal).
In general my current research work lie within the soil, water, and plant
relationships, crop water requirements (consumptive use), irrigation scheduling,
vadose water and stream flow response to drainage system, water table falling and
crop harvesting. Also, the investigations involve the infiltration (rates and
cumulative), depth of wetting front and profile wetness, hydraulic diffusivity,
sorptivity as a hydraulic parameter expresses the rate of soil moisture movement to
soil particle during the irrigation process, and at steady state infiltration. The studies
of water quality and salinity of surface and ground water in relation to agricultural
expansion in arid lands are also emphasized.

From the Introduction of the Journal of Biologia, Vol.64, No.3, (Forward to the Thematic Issue on Bio-hydrology): Another study in the Middle East by A.M.Amer determined vapour pressure
isotherms, moisture adsorption capacity, surface area, and hygroscopic water content
of soils with differing in texture, CaCO3 and salinity in the west and middle Nile
