Introduction
Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University SEG student chapter was established in 2013
and it is an active group, which attempts to take an attention on economic geology and
equip students with knowledge, skills and field oriented experiences that are valuable
when it comes time to enter the work force or continue on for further academic career.
Turkey, especially western Anatolia is home to a variety of Epithermal,
Porphyry, Skarn and Magmatic Segregation (Cr – Ni) deposits, geology, and geologists
with both wisdom and experience. The chapter’s proximity to these presents great
opportunities for students.
In the 2015-2016 academic year that Mugla Sıtkı Koçman University SEG
Student Chapter continued to foster the education and professional development of its
members through lectures, workshops, short courses, fieldtrips, and networking
events.
In addition, this year we were able to successfully complete “SEG 2016
Conference: Tethyan Tectonics and Metallogeny” in Turkey as a part or Organizing
Committee. The invaluable experience our members gained this year was made
possible by support from the Society of Economic Geologist (SEG), Turkish
Association of Exploration Geologists (MJD), and by several fundraising efforts
organized and executed by our student members. This annual report details the
activities of the MSKU SEG student chapter over the past academic year and briefly
outlines our plan for another successful year in 2016-2017.
Table 1 is representing members of MSKU SEG Student chapter – both SEG
student members and student non-members. There are 36 students – 1 PhD., 6 MSc.,
30 BSc. In list and 14 students are also SEG student member. Student chapter
presidential, academic / industrial addresses are also listed in Table 1.

1. MSKU - SEG Student Chapter Bi-Monthly Meetings
Bi-monthly meetings were held during the Fall and Spring semesters at the Muğla
Sıtkı Koçman University. Topics covered during meetings included: SEG chapter
business, upcoming field trips, volunteer events, fundraising activities, and
professional networking events. Especially as a new chapter, we are more dealing with
advertising and gathering new memberships.
2. MSKU - SEG Student Chapter Field Trips
The 2015 - 2016 MSKU - SEG field trip is as follows:
2.1. Stream Sediment Workshop
As a MSKU – SEG Student chapter, we organize a stream sediment workshop
every year in Ula – Muğla. Almost all student members have been participated and
learnt the systematics and procedures of stream sediment sampling.

2.2. Efemçukuru – Kışladağ Field Trip
As a MSKU – SEG Student chapter, we perfectly organize 2-days field trip to
Efemçukuru IS and Kışladağ Porphyry Au deposits thanks to The SEG Stewart R.
Wallace and MJD (Turkish Association of Economic Geologists) funds.
24 student members had joined and gained wide experience about Internediate
Sulfidation and porphyry type deposits. Especially students were very excited and
interested in underground mining activities. For detailed information and more photos,
please refer to Field Trip Report.

3. Organized or associated workshops, conferences
3.1. SEG 2016 Conference: Tethyan Tectonics and Metallogeny
SEG 2016 conferences that the Society has organized for some years, given its
location and focus on the Tethyan metallogenic belt, and the metallogenic focus would
also embraced many more terranes worldwide. The technical sessions were on track
to being sold out and participants would enjoy a very full program of topics covering all
aspects of metallogenesis, mineral exploration, and mining, with international keynote
speakers for each thematic session.
The extended program included a considerable number of pre- and post-
conference participants the opportunity to explore this beautiful and culturally diverse
country. The conference had the complete support of the local commercial sector and
the secure environment to enjoy the proceedings.
Ilkay KUSCU (Academic Supervisor of MSKU SEG Student Chapter) were a
chair in technical program and Ali ALUC (President of MSKU SEG Student Chapter)
were a vice-chair in student programs within a part of organizing committee.
Erde BILIR and Safak SONMEZ (Executive Committee members of MSKU SEG
Student Chapter) had a poster presentation in corresponding session of SEG2016.
Almost ten of our student members joined the conference and got memorable
experiences.

4. Fund-raising Programs
We continue to sell MSKU SEG Student Chapter glasses and other
merchandise. Funds raised went to SEG student chapter activities throughout the
year, including career days and lectures for the chapter at meetings. The chapter
plans to sell geological equipments, which has our logo like wests, field books,
hammers, etc. to help raise funds for the Chapter.
The MSKU SEG Student Chapter consistently sends out letters for sponsorship
for planned field trips and short courses.

5. Future Plans (2016 - 2017)
Plans for the upcoming year in SEG include a bi-monthly lecture program as a
workshop from specialist geologists from industry. As always we are planning multiple
mine tours and field trips to nearby districts, but we could not provide last year due to
the fact that mining industry was not perfect. Again this year, we are trying to have
small mine tours to Kışladağ and Efemçukuru gold mines probably in December, 2016.
