Bio 3 and Bio 5 courses are full this semester. I’ve attached the new course request form. I’ve also attached the SP18 schedule with staffing for all our full time instructors and a few adjuncts, so most of the courses are now staff. Arla will start working with the adjuncts to staff those courses, but some of the Bio 20 will go to the one-semester full time temp that will take Arla’s place when she is on sabbatical. I also changed the times for Bio 11A so it does not overlap with two chemistry blocks. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks. Ann Dr. Ann P. Fallon, M.D., M.P.H Biology Department Clovis Community College, Room AC2-212 10309 N. Willow Fresno, CA 93730 (559) 325-5297

So it will need to be an 8-11 AM lab on Friday. Derek
P.S. we should work on a way to anticipate these problems before students start registering.

Our 11A students have a choice between lab on M or W, either one will create a conflict with either the Chem or the Math courses. We discussed the possibilities and the easiest solution is to keep the Biol 11A lecture and the Mon lab as-is, but move the W lab to Friday. I am ok with this idea as long as Stephanie is ok with it. We do have space in 277 to do this. Since students are registering now, we need a decision on this ASAP. I realize that this is likely undesireable for both the students and for Stephanie, but among the three of us we didn't have any other solutions. Math cannot change their schedule because of the room schedule, and chemistry can't add sections because they can't get instructors. OK, I think I got that all right. Derek, let everyone know if I missed a point. (Vicky: attached is the latest schedule in terms of staffing; I am still working on staffing while we wait to fill the temporary full-time position). Arle and Ann, We are considering adding another section of precalculus (Math 4b) and Calculus (Math 5a) to meet the demand for these overflowing courses. I looked at the master schedule. It looks like TTH 9- 10:50 will work for either? Is this correct? What about Math 5a 11:30-1:45 (this is the only open window with physics and engineering on TTH)? Also, which bio courses should a bio major be taking if they are taking Math 4b? Math 5a? Ok, great. To answer an earlier question. Yes Pre-Professional student need to take PHYS. They can take the PHYS 2 series but we always suggest the PHYS 4 series. We might need to look at the schedule because this semester PHYS 4B conflicts with O-Chem and now next semester PHYS 4C will conflict. Currently we have several students driving over to FCC to take their PHYS. Thanks for all the feedback. Shawn

Hi Shawn – It will conflict with both the PHYS 4C lab and the ENGR 6 lab in the T Th format. The MWF format conflicted with nothing. It is up to you. I don’t think that many students would take ENGR 6 and organic. They may want organic and PHYS 4C however. You would know better the chem major and pre-med major requirements. Chris

Jason,    I explained to Tom that if I worked at a company 8 hrs/day, 5 days/week, that means I am putting  in 40 hrs/wk ( I included that for Tony’s benefit).  If Labor Day occurs on Monday, and then the  company makes me work 10 hrs/day on Tuesday through Friday, I have still put in 40 hrs that week,  so I did not receive a paid holiday.  What the admin is doing is the exact same scenario, but instead  of adding 2 hrs/day to my 4 day work week, they are doing it in 5 minute increments.  That means I  am not getting a paid holiday for Labor Day, which violates our contract.  He did not have a  response to that argument, which I would like to think means he would back off on this stance.  Bill

I'll suggest what I said earlier: from the scheduled days and times that each department submits for a course calculate the number of hours the class is proposed to be in session (I believe they already do this). Then, compare this proposal to the average of the max and min hours allowed for each course. The average is a more reasonable scheduling target than the max alone! If holidays cause the proposed hours to drop below target, then time could be added -- but they should work with the departments to make sure crucial course conflicts are avoided. In some cases avoiding conflicts may be a higher priority, so it may occasionally be necessary to schedule a course to run slightly below its target hours (this would probably happen rarely, if ever). As you suggested, subs could be used to reduce time lost to instructor absences. Subs should be discipline experts whenever possible, with library or counselor presentations being secondary possibilities. As for 10 minute passing periods, I think we already do this in most cases. I wouldn't worry about this, however, until we find out more specifics (ie, what any proposed rules on passing periods actually are). My two cents... Tony

Jason, Ann and I feel strongly that we should not be creating scheduling conflicts for our students. Not to be overly dramatic, but such a situation is potentially delaying their whole life trajectory. If an instructor is absent, we should move heaven and earth to get someone into the classroom, even if it's a counselor

Jason:
First, great job at presenting our concerns and convincing admin to be flexible on this issue.

Jason, Ann and I feel strongly that we should not be creating scheduling conflicts for our students. Not to be overly dramatic, but such a situation is potentially delaying their whole life trajectory. If an instructor is absent, we should move heaven and earth to get someone into the classroom, even if it's a counselor showing an instructional video. Dr. Arla G. Dear all:
Ignoring the Chem 1B that Shawn says is full (TuTh 8:30-12:50) and the night Chem 1B that she implies is undesirable, I have found the following: students enrolled in the Chem 1B that runs MW 8:15-12:20 and F 8:15-9:05 could take Phys 4B or Phys 2B with no conflicts, while students enrolled in the TuTh 1 - 5:20 Chem 1B could take Phys 4A with no conflicts.
Thus, students could take Chem 1B and either Phys 4A, 4B, or 2B (unless another Chem 1B has recently filled).
The only other physics class offered next term is Phys 4C, and these students would have to take either the filled Chem 1B or the night Chem 1B to avoid conflicts. However, I asked these prospective Phys 4C students (who are currently enrolled in Phys 4B) about this issue today and none needed both Chem 1B and Phys 4C next term.
So, right now I can't find a fatal scheduling conflict between Chem 1B and our physics offerings.
Shawn, can you ask the students in question for more info on their scheduling problems? We need to know what physics class(es) they need that conflict with Chem 1B. If we can find out more details soon perhaps there is a way we work around their problem and accommodate them.
Tony

Hi Shawn - Which physics class is causing the conflict (you didn't say)? Is the reason for the conflict because of the added 20 minutes to the physics labs to make up for holidays? Also, what math classes are needed in the afternoon and when in the afternoon? Math 5A, Math 5B, Math 6, and Math 17 all have sections that start after noon at 12:30 on MWF. I am happy to meet again. This is perenially a "can of worms." As we grow and add sections it is impossible for all sections to not coflict with anything (for both on and off-track students). We do want to do the best that we can however. Chris

When the CHEM 1A and CHEM 1B are taken at different locations
it usually is not a problem but for some universities the students registration is blocked until they can provide documentation that the curriculum both here and FCC are similar. It is difficult to say without more detailed information, but perhaps one solution would be for 5-6 affected students to attend the lecture for one Phys 4A section and the lab from the other Phys 4A section. We could do this by filling out "course conflict form" that I have completed many times in the past for students in similar situations. I am happy to do this again for the 5-6 affected students if this would solve their problem. Alternatively, perhaps similar arrangements could be made in chemistry if that is what is necessary to help them. Tony

Hi All, Sorry to bring this topic up again but I just wanted to let you know I am getting complaints about the
schedule again. The CHEM 1B 8:30AM – 12:50PM class was full by the 4th day of registration. According to the students that is the only CHEM 1B class that does not conflict with Physics unless they take the night class. Next semester the BIO 11A is offered on MW therefore they also had to take the TTH CHEM 1B class, I believe that is why it filled so fast.

I think we should give it a year since the prerequisite of Chemistry 1A went into effect during the Fall 2014 term. It’s difficult for me to predict but as we grow I do think we would be able to fill two sections of Biology 11A during the Fall term and Biology 11B during the Spring term. But, maybe that’s me being excited about more sections of Biology 11A and 11B J The second option you have listed below should be adequate for now. Thanks for checking. I am wondering if we should move forward with offering two sections of both Biol 11A and 11B every semester or not. We used to have two sections of 11A in the fall and two sections of 11B in the spring. We wanted to add sections, so currently, we have this:
Course Fall Spring Biol 11A 2 sections 1 section Biol 11B 1 section 2 sections However, Biol 11B didn't fill this semester, probably because of the Chem pre-req changes. It used to fill and have a waitlist. We discussed having two sections of both courses every semester, but maybe that's a bad idea. We could do this, essentially reversing what we have now: Course Fall Spring Biol 11A 1 section 2 sections Biol 11B 2 sections 1 section Let me know your thoughts. Dr. Arla G. Hi Arla, Most of the honors students are taking Biology 11A this semester. Since we implemented the Chemistry 1A prerequisite during the Fall 2014 most of the honors students will be taking Biology 11B during the Fall term with OCHEM. I think there are two honors students taking Biology 11B because they took Chemistry 1A over the summer term. Hi Ann and Brent - I am writing you to make sure that I still have the use of AC1-114 and AC2-178 that I currently have for next spring (2016) as well. Attached is what I plan for CSCI and ENGR for next Spring. The CSCI part affects rooms that your disciplines own. There are no day/time/room changes in my plans in going from Spring 2015 to Spring 2016. Thanks, Chris <Spring 2016 Schedule development for CSCI and ENGR.docx>
