2) A horizontal beam AB is freely supported at A and B 9m apart and carries a uniformly
distributed load of 20kN/m run (including its own weight). A clockwise moment of 180
kN-m is applied to the beam at a point C, 4m from the left hand support A. Calculate the
reactions at A and B, and sketch the bending moment diagram for the beam, stating
principal values. Calculate the slope and deflection of the beam at C if E.I. = 15×104 kN-
m2.

3) A coloumn fixed at both ends is initially curved whose equation of curve is given by y =
0.5 sin It is subjected to an axial load of 50 kN in compression at 1.5 cm eccentricity.
Determine the maximum stress induced if its cross section is 6m × 8m. E = 200 GPa.

4) a) A Cantilever of span 4m carries a udl of 3kN/m from free end to the mid point of the
beam. Calculate the slope and deflection at the free end by moment area method.
b) A simply supported steel beam having uniform crosssection is 14m span and is
simply supported at its ends. It carries a concentrated load of 120 kN and 80 kN at
two points 3m and 9.5m from left and respectively. If the moment of inertia of the
section is 160 × 107 mm4 and E = 210 Gpa. Calculate the deflection of the beam at
loaded points.

5) Determine the deflection and slope under the beam shown in figure below by conjugate
beam method. E = 200 GPa and I = 15 × 104cm4.

6) A gun metal cylinder 12cm external diameter and 7.995cm internal diameter is forced onto
a steel cylinder 8cm external diameter and 4cm internal diameter. Calculate the maximum
resulting stresses in the steel and gunmetal. Esteel = 200GPa, Egunmetal = 100 GPa Poisson’s
ratio is 0.35 for both metals.

7) A ring is made of stock with a circular crosssection 8cm in diameter. The inside diameter
of the ring is 10cm. The load P is 20 kN. Calculate the stresses at A & B.

8) A built up ring consists of an inner copper ring and outer steel ring. The diameter of the
surface of contact of the two rings is 60cm. Determine the stresses setup in the steel and
copper by rotation of the ring at 2500 r.p.m. Both the rings are of rectangular crosssection
15mm in the radial direction perpendicular to the plane of the ring.

9) A hollow cylinder of 40 cm external diameter and 20 cm internal diameter is rotating
at 3000 r.p.m. Determine the distribution of radial and hoop stresses in the cylinder.

If the cam rotates at 540 rpm anti clockwise, find the maximum velocity and
acceleration of the follower during ascent.

respectively. They engage with a compound planet wheel consisting of two gear wheels 3

wheels 3 and 4 have 26 and 22 teeth. The gear 1 is keyed to the driver shaft while the
wheel 2 is fixed coaxial with the driven shaft. The planet wheel is carried on an arm from
the driving shaft which is co-axial with the driven shaft. Find the velocity ratio of the gear
drive. If 1 KW of power is transmitted at input speed of 100 rpm. What is the holding

the stress produced for 1/8th turn of the nut. Esteel = 210 GN/m2 and Ew = 110 GN/m2. Find
the change in the above stresses if a tensile force of 20 kN is applied to the ends of the
bolt.

3) A hammer weighing 100 N falls 1.25m on a 5 cm cube iron block before coming to rest.
Find the distance the block will be compressed and the instantaneous stress induced in it.
Also determine the velocity with which the hammer will strike the block. E = 200 GPa.

a) i) Modulus of elasticity and shear modulus.
ii) Modulus of elasticity and bulk modulus and hence derive the relation among the three elastic constants.
b) A hollow shaft of diameter ratio 3/5 is required to transmit 800 kW at 110 r.p.m., the
maximum torque being 20% greater than the mean. The shear stress is not to exceed
63 MPa and the twist in a length of 3mm is not to exceed 1.4 degrees. Calculate the
minimum external diameter satisfying these conditions.
OR 5) a) At a point in a material there are two direct stresses of 80 MPa tensile and 60 MPa
compressive acting at right angles to each other. The greatest principle stress in the
material is limited to 125 MPa in tension. To what shearing stress may the material
may be subjected on the given planes and what will then be the maximum shearing
stress at the point.
b) A cylinder is 3cm long, 0.75 m in diameter and 12.5 mm thick at atmospheric
pressure. Calculate the dimensions when subjected to an internal pressure of 1.5
MPa. What is then the maximum shear stress in the shell. Assume E = 210 GPa; =
0.25.

6) Draw the shearforce and bending moment diagrams for the beam shown in figure below.
Indicate the numerical values at all the important sections.

7) A simply supported beam carries inclined loads of 1 kN, 2 kN and 3kN inclined at 30o, 45o
and 60o to the vertical as shown in fig. below. The loads act at 1m, 2m and 3m from the
left support respectively. If the span is 4m, draw the bending movement and shear force
diagrams and calculate their values under the loads.

b) A bar of 100 cm in length is subjected to an axial pull such that the maximum stress
is equal to 150 MPa. Its area of cross section is 2 cm2 over a length of 95 cm and for
the middle 5 cm length; it is only 1cm2. If E = 200 GPa, calculate the strain energy

them.
b) Define and explain Kirchoff’s laws. Also prove them by taking an example of simple

3) Enumerate all the parts of a DC machine. Indicate their functions and state the materials of
each part.

4) a) Explain the principle of operation of a three point starter with the help of neat
diagram.
b) A long shunt compound motor takes a current of 24 A from 240 V mains. Determine
the overall efficiency if the resistances of armature, series field and shunt field are
0.1Ω, 0.08Ω and 60 ohms respectively and stray losses are 628 W.

5) a) Develop the equivalent circuit of a 1-ø transformer.
b) Find the primary and secondary turns of a 3300/300v, 1- ø, 50 Hz, 30 kVA
transformer if the flux in the core is to be about 0.06 Wb. Also determine the primary
and secondary currents if the losses are to be neglected.

2) What are the various methods of improving performance of a Rankine cycle? Explain
reheat cycle with help of neat sketches of lay out and T – S diagrams. Derive the
expression for efficiency of reheat cycle and compare with Rankine cycle.

3) a) What are the factors that affect the boilers efficiency?
b) A boiler is provided with a chimney of 24 m height. The ambient temperature is
25oC. The temperature of flue gases passing through the chimney is 300oC. If the air
flow through the combustion chamber is 20 kg/kg of fuel burnt, find
i) The theoretical draught in cm of water and
ii) Velocity of flue gases passing through the chimney if 50% of the theoretical
draught is lost in friction at gate and passages.
UNIT-II
4) a) Define critical pressure ratio of a nozzle and discuss why attainment of sonic velocity
determines the maximum mass rate of flow through steam nozzle.
b) Steam expands isentropically from the state of 8 bar and 250oC to 1.5 bar in a
convergent – divergent nozzle. The steam flow rate is 0.75 kg/s. Find the velocity of
steam at exit from the nozzle and the exit area of nozzle. Neglect the inlet velocity of
steam.
OR
5) In an impulse turbine, mean diameter of blades is 1.05m and the speed is 3000 rpm. The
nozzle angle is 180o, the ratio of blade speed to steam speed is 0.42 and blade velocity
coefficient is 0.85. The outlet blade angle is 30 less than that of the inlet blade angle.
Steam flow rate is 20 kg/sec. Obtain
a) Tangential thrust on blades.
b) Axial thrust on blades.
c) Resultant thrust.
d) Power development.
e) Blade efficiency.
UNIT-III
6) a) With a neat sketch explain working of evaporative condenser.
b) What are the various sources of air leakage into the condenser? State the effects of air
leakage.
OR
7) In a gas turbine cycle, the pressure ratio is 6 and maximum cycle temperature is 650oC.
The efficiencies turbine and compressors are 0.85 and 0.82. Air enters the compressor at
15oC and flow rate of air is 12 kg/sec. For compression process, Cp = 1.005 kJ/kg-K; =
1.32. For combustion process, Cp = 1.11 kJ/kg.K. Determine:
a) Power developed
b) Thermal efficiency
c) Work ratio
UNIT-IV
8) a) Explain with neat sketch the working of vapour compression refrigeration cycle.
b) A heat pump is used to maintain an auditorium hall at 23oC when the atmospheric
temperature is -6oC. The heat load is 2300 kJ/min. Calculate the power required to
run the actual heat pump if the cop of the actual heat pump is 25% of the Carnot heat
pump working between the same temperature limits.
OR
9) Atmospheric air with barometric pressure of 1.013 bar has 38oC dry bulb temperature and
28oC wet bulb temperature. Determine
a) Humidity ratio
