HIS tireless servant in your laboratory will automaticallyIlect any number (up to 200) of rigidly controlled samples

of predetermined fluid volumes. Each collected sample maycomprise any number of drops from one to four hundred. Aseach separate sampling is completed, the carriage automat-ically advances to repeat identical collections consecutivelyuntil the whole fractionation has been made.

All you have to do is to set it up for the conditions of thechosen experiment, short or long, and then leave it alone. The machine will plod along without attention hour after hour, all day (and night) long. When the job's done, it will shutitself off.

The Technicon Fraction Collector has been thoroughlytested in actual laboratory installations, where it has proveninvaluable to busy research staffs. We shall be happy to sendyou details.

Ref. Chromatography of Amino Acids on Starch Columns-W. H. Stein and S. Moore, Jrnl. Biol. Chem. 176, 337,(1948)

' saves time and laborrelieves laboratory staff of the fretful and time.consuming chore of fraction-cutting: releases workersfor other duties.

' triples work outputyou con run it twenty-four hours a day, continuously,to triple fractionation output as compared with an 8hour laboratory day.

gives greater resolutionby collecting a large number of small fractions, rather than a few gross ones, you'll get more datafrom a given fractionation, e.9. a chromatogram, ora fractional distillation.

assures accuracybecause the possibility of human error is automati-cally ruled out. Now fraction-collection becomes astraightforward mechanical procedure.

FROBISHER'S BACTERIOLOGYNEW (4th) EDITION. You are certain tofind this New (4th) Edition more teachablethan its predecessors, because the revision wasmade with that aim always in mind. The entireorder of presentation has been changed with thefollowing resultant improvements: eliminationof advanced terminology from the early chap-

ters; less emphasis on pathogenic aspects; andbetter grouping of material. There are 435illustrations.

BY MARTIN FROBISHER, JR., Sc.D., Chief, Bacteriology Labo-ratories, Communicable Disease Center, U.S.P.H.S.; Lecturerin Bacteriology, the Johns Hopkins University. 936 pageswith 435 illustrations. $5.50. New (4th) Edition.

JORDAN - BURROWS' BACTERIOLOGYNEW (15th) EDITION. One of the truly sig-nificant features of this standard text is its em-phasis on the physiology of microorganisms-a topic that is increasing daily in importancebecause it is the basis of research into chemo-therapeutics. A basically biologic approach ismaintained throughout, and there are many

new electron micrographs among the 264 illus-trations. The excellent arrangement of ma-terial facilitates the preparation of lectures.

By WILLIAM BURROWS, PH.D., Professor of Bacteriology, De-partment of Bacteriology and Parasitology, University ofChicago. 981 pages with 264 illustrations, some In color.$9.00. New (15th) Edition.

MAXIMOW & BLOOM'S HISTOLOGYFIFTH EDITION. In this widely-used textthe student is not only led to understand theminute structure of each human part-he isalso told which cells of that part are responsiblefor each phase of its function, and how theseparticular cells operate. New concepts of tissue

function disclosed by the use of radioactiveisotopes are included. The 562 illustrations arenoted for their vivid tone values.

By ALEXANDER A. MAXIMOW and WILLIAM BLOOM, Professorof Anatomy, University of Chicago. 700 pages with 562illustrations. $8.50. Fifth Edition.

The Plant AlkaloidsThis is the fourth edition of the classic chemical refer-ence book in its field. The material is dealt with pri-marily on the basis of chemical classification accordingto nuclear classification. However, this has beenmodified in cases where extensive series, includingseveral chemical types, occurs in one plant or in closelyrelated plants. Cross references are provided, where a

chemical group is dealt with in more than one place. It is, in essence, a detailed reference of literature on

alkaloids, and as such, an invaluable aid to all thosewhose interests lie in this field.

Revised EditionBy Karl A. Stiles

This revision of .a popular manual follows the same general plan of the first edi-tion, with some changes in the order of the material and several new additions. The book has been revised throughout, now offering a wider range of material butretaining the flexibility of the first edition. Published June 1949. $3.25

General Chemistry-A Systematic ApproachBy Sisler, VanderWerf and Davidson

A text for general chemistry courses, this new book emphasizes the modern princi-ples of atomic structure and the nature of the chemical bond. An abundance ofdescriptive, factual material is provided, organized in terms of the theoreticalprinciples involved. Designed for use in all but the most elementary freshmanchemistry courses, it is particularly well adapted for chemistry majors, engineers, premedical, pre-pharmacal, and other technical students. Published September1949. $5.00

College BotanyBy Hylander and Stanley

This new text is designed for a full-year course in general botany. Part I dis-cusses the individual plant and its life problems, using a woody green plant tointroduce the student to the basic facts of plant morphology, histology, and cellstructure and function; Part II deals with plants as groups in our large vegeta-tion complex. ANOTHER SCORE IN THE

battle of the inchesIt takes many costly buildings to house sourtelephone system. Ever)I inch saved helps keepdown the cost of telephone service. So at BellTelephone Laboratories engineers work con-stantly to squeeze the size out of telephoneequipment.

In the picture a new voice frequency ampli-fier is being slipped into position. Featuringa Western Electric miniature vacuum tube, tiny permalloy transformers, and specialassembly techniques, it is scarcely larger thana single vacuum tube used to be. Yet it is ableto boost a voice by 35 decibels. Mounted in a

bay, only tsro feet Wide and 1 11/) feet high. 600of the new amplifiers do work which oncerequired a room full of equipment.

This kind of size reduction throughout theSystem means that more parts can be housedin a given space. Telephone buildings andother installations keep on giving more servicefor their size - and keep down costs. The new amplifiers. which will soon be used

by the thousands throughout the Bell Systemto keep telephone voices up to strength, are butone example of this important phase of Lab-oratories' work.

The new 5th Edition reflects authority on treatment of fractures-based on thestudy of the physiology of bone and muscle, pathology of bone and func-tional anatomy.

A new chapter is included on the so-called "farmyard"reduction of fractures, covering certain simple methods of treatment that theauthors feel may be used under almost all circumstances. Revisions are made inthe material on compound fractures and on the treatment of wounds, reflectingthe more extensive use of antibiotics and current findings in the immediateclosure of wounds and the use of full-thickness skin grafts.

Detailed information on the treatment of individualfractures together with the descriptions of fundamental procedures make thebook widely acceptable.New 5th Edition. Approximately 600 Pages. Over 300 Illustrations. $7.00
