The First Scrutiny: “A spring of water welling up to eternal life” At the 9:00 Mass this Sunday, the Elect will undergo the First Scrutiny, a rite in which the Church draws forth and submits to Christ’s healing power the areas of spiritual dryness that they have identified in their lives. The Scrutinies, like other Lenten acts of purification and enlightenment, are not for the Elect alone. The Church asks all of us to examine ourselves this week and identify the dry places in our lives—places of thirst that only Christ’s living water can restore. During Lent we recognize that the world around us can often appear barren. But we also remember that, through baptism, we have access to a well that never runs dry. When you bless yourself at the baptismal font this weekend, rejoice in the knowledge that Jesus has opened for us “a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” Drew Denton, Director of Faith Formation
