Wonderful world of toys
From the beginning, children have always had their toys, something of interest for them in order to avoid disturbing their parents, who are occupied with various concerns for the survival of the species. The first toys were made from the materials available in the area where people lived.

They were and still are of a great help in the development of children. Various social and board games helped them in developing a number of skills, to be used in hunting, for example, once they grew up. The time in which a certain toy appears and the materials from which it is made reflect the cultural milieu and are a reflection of society. From prehistoric times to the present day toys have been made of stone, wood, bone, clay, straw, reed, bamboo, leather, wax, alabaster, bronze, silver, gold, porcelain, paper, polymers and PVC, pasta, sugar ...

Prehistoric toys were inspired by objects from everyday use. In Bab-ylon 5,000 years B.C. children played with rattles made of clay, filled with tiny pebbles. Chess is one of the oldest games in the world and backgammon was played 3,000 B.C. Near the location of Stonehenge (England) archaeologists found a stone toy of an animal 2,000 years old but are still not sure which animal it represents. A toy in the form

During the Middle Ages in Europe there was produced the first white clay finger-sized doll and the first wind-up toy was invented in Ger-many (inventor Karel Grod) and by Leonardo da Vinci in Italy. Chil-dren also played with wooden dolls accompanied with accessories and miniature furniture. In the eighteenth century dolls, animals and masks made from the paper were popular, or only parts of the toy were composed of paper and then glued or sewn onto a stuffed leather torso. In the second half of the eighteenth century animals, medieval knights and mythical creatures were manufactured from tin. Popular were cubes with the alphabet and sailboats. The first puzzle was pro-duced in England in 1876 and Noah’s ark. The board game Home you go! was patented under the name of Ludo in 1896 in England as well, one of a series of games originated from the Indian game Pachisi. The

By the time of the Industrial Revolution toys had become affordable for many children. But there was still a big difference between the rich and poor children in their possession of toys. The ingenuity, imag-ination and skills of adults in their environment help with creating educational and good handmade toys, such as flutes, whistles, whip-ping-tops, bows and arrows, slingshots, rattles, miniature utensils, rag balls, dolls carved or made of various materials.

In Japan, Hinamatsuri also called Doll’s Day or Girl’s Day is cele-brated each year on March 3rd. Families display a set of ornamental dolls representing the Emperor and Empress, attendants, musicians (courtiers) in traditional court dress of the Heian period. As the day of the festival ends, families take the dolls down, and put them into their boxes. Tradition says in the past the dolls were made of straw and let float on the river or the sea, to pray for the safety of children.

Stuffed animals were invented by the ancient Egyptians, great admir-ers of animals. They were not as soft and fluffy as are nowadays. In 1880, the production of soft plush toys was launched in Germany, and as a matter of fact they were really nice and soft pads for pins, which children loved to play with. The first teddy bear was created at the beginning of the twentieth century parallel in Germany and the United States where it gained in popularity after the anecdote with President Theodore Roosevelt, who spared the life of a bear cub while hunting. Since then the stuffed bear toy in the United States is known under the name of Teddy bear .

ESCO Representative List of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2010. Tied to the religions, we inherited the toys made of sugar, which often come in the form of angels. Easter eggs were made of different materials and carefully decorated according to many ancient cultures and children are allowed to play with them. The toy ornaments for Christmas trees in Russia tell the history of that country but also have a series with the motifs from fairy tales. In the 13th century, in Italy was created the first “barn” with the figures in front of a cave or barn with the newborn Jesus as the central figure, the figures being made of a number of materials.
Wooden toys of the Croatian Zagorje (region behind a mountain) are tra-ditional Croatian products originated in the 19th century and inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Heritage of Hu-manity. There are about 50 models of these wooden toys such as pipes, clappers (birds or butterflies with wheels and pushed with the stick), tambour (musical instrument with four strings), wooden animals, most-ly horses, whistles, models of cars, trucks, trains, airplanes, furniture for dolls. They are made of wood from the immediate surroundings mostly willow, maple, beech and linden trees in the Croatian Zagorje.
