Hello, my name is Lucero Silva and I am extremely excited to start a new chapter in my life as the Adminis-trative Assistant at St. John the Baptist Catholic School. I have been living here in the Milwaukie area since 2010 and am a member of St. John's. I grew up in Hood River where my parents still live. I love the Gorge and visit as much as possible. I have two children with whom their father and I enjoy doing outdoor activities. My oldest will be attending kindergarten this year here at St. John's. I have worked with families and children in a previous job as a Family Service Worker. Confidentiality is one of my core values. I am looking forward to working with all the families at St. John's. Thank you in advance to all the families for being understanding with me in this new ven-ture. Thank you! Lucero Silva

In Scripture, fire is a powerful image. Spiritual writers speak of a fire of love, of a passion for the work of the Gospel burning within the hearts of the faithful. Today’s Gospel Jesus tells us that he has come to set the world on fire. For him the world is the people of God and the fire is the energy of his mission. John the Bap-tist had proclaimed that one was coming after him who would baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire, inflaming his disciples. Jeremiah despite constant danger trusted in the Lord and faithfully spoke God’s words. While constantly challenged in his ministry, Jeremiah continued to trust in the Lord and in today’s passage, God once again saves Jeremiah to preach again. How do you handle opposition and rejection for believing and trusting in God? The author of Hebrews speaks of Christ’s whole hearted dedication to the mission, a level of conviction that eventually led him to the Cross. Jesus acknowledges that his message will likely bring divi-sion between those who accept it and those who do not. The issue of justice and acceptance and equality were often contentious in his time; and they often cause division in our own day. Jesus knows that his mis-sion and ministry will bring opposition, rejection, and suffering. We Christians sometimes feel we should always be agreeable. But often we are called to utter uncomfortable truths, like a prophet or Jesus himself. Whether it is defending unborn life, calling for economic justice in our neighborhoods or being critical of fighting a war, our faith sometimes calls us to rock the boat. By virtue of our own Baptism, we already share in Jesus’ mission. Maybe that attitude of the disciple is to be ever ready to catch on fire with Jesus’ love. The coming judgment forces us to look at the implications of our commitments. As Jesus warned in last Sunday's Gospel, a commitment of faith requires us to change our attitude toward material possessions and to take even more seriously our moral responsibilities. Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (this year it is not a holy day of obligation) is celebrated August 15th. Even though this year we are not obliged to attend we might consider attending the morning Mass to pray to our Lady, Our Mother for her guidance as we struggle to live as disciples of Je-sus. She is the perfect example for us to follow. On this solemnity, we profess our belief that Mary has gone before us, body and soul, into heaven. On this summer Marian solemnity, we celebrate that Mary was assumed, or taken up, into heaven. The assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into heaven has long been held as an important Catholic belief. The belief was not defined as dogma, however, until 1950 by Pope Pius XII. The dogma teaches that Mary, who was without sin, was taken, body and soul, into the glory of heaven. The Gospel for this day reminds us that Mary's Assumption into heaven is best understood with regard for the full spectrum of Catholic beliefs about the person of Christ and the person of Mary. Only Mary, who was born without stain of original sin—the Immaculate Conception—could give birth to Christ, who is fully God and fully human. This is called the Immaculate Conception. Because of Mary's role in God's plan of salvation, she does not suffer from the ef-fects of sin, which are death and decay. Mary is the first to receive the fullness of the redemption that her son has won for all of humanity. The Church, therefore, recognizes Mary as the sign of the salvation prom-ised to all. The Gospel highlights Mary's faith. Mary's faith enabled her to recognize the work of God in her people's history and in her own life. Her openness to God allowed God to work through her so that salvation might come to all. Mary is a model and symbol of the Church. May we be like Mary, open and cooperative in God's plan of salvation.
Merciful like the Father
Don't forget that this is the Year of Mercy. God's mercy is for everyone! It's for the hardened hearts of our ene-mies, for the lost and forsaken, and for the confused and fallen away. And we must be fervent in prayer that we allow His mercy to reach all of us. Walk through the doors of mercy and leave your fears and concerns at His feet, in a spirit of trust. It is time for us to have a new vigilance in prayer. Every time we turn around, it seems that some new tragedy has taken place in our world. Unsus-pecting people become victims. Darkness seems to have the upper hand. True evil is showing itself to be very real. And because fear is crippling, our hearts are burdened. But this is not the time to lose hope. The mercy of God is a light in the darkness, even when His plan in all of this is a mys-tery to us.”
