Infrastructure and transport►This is the built environment of an area such as transport links,

schools, factories, services (gas and water etc.)►Businesses usually rent or buy an already existing unit so that

you don’t have to worry about getting these things installed►Location of motorways and transport links is essential to most

businesses



Labour►Need to set up in an area with a suitable labour force►Old industrial areas for mining and shipbuilding etc tend to

have a surplus of labour►It’s good if the labour force can provide the skills that you are

looking for



Cost►Price of land and buildings can vary throughout the country►If the location is a high price it will impact on the price of the

finished goods►Land in the South-East tends to be the most expensive



Climate and physical geography►Some areas of the country are more suited to particular

activities than others, especially important in agriculture►Example is that East Anglia is flat and very suitable for crowing

crops

Access to market►Some businesses need to be close to or within the markets

they serve►Especially important for the service industries►An example is the location of out of town supermarkets very

close to housing estates

Availability of raw materials►If the cost of transporting raw materials are high you are best

to locate at the source►Often the raw materials are more bulky than the finished
