Women led the movement with groups such as the WOMEN’S CHRISTIAN TEMPERANCE UNION and the ANTI-SALOON LEAGUE.

One of the most famous female prohibitionists was CARRIE NATION.

Wielding an axe at six feet tall and 180 pound, she was a formidable force!

FRANCES WILLARD was the founder of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. She urged women to work on the local level to achieve the vote. She also convinced many to work for the vote to influence the moral character of America.

Worked for: equal pay, 8 hour day, protection of women & children in workplace, jail reform

uniform marriage & divorce laws, —also started shelters

and free kindergartens
