The Berea City School District is a diverse community dedicated
to inspiring lives ofcharacter, learning, leadership, and
service.WELCOME TO COUNTRY
NUTRITION SERVICESAll of our schools use the Mealtime Point of
Sale System. Parents may put money on account for their students at
any time during the school year. Please make checks payable to the
school cafeteria.
Funds may be dropped off in the school cafeteria prior to the
beginning of the school day. Funds may also be put on your
student’s account using the online. There is no charge from
Mealtime to use this feature or view your student’s account. Plan
on at least 30 minutes for the online payment to show up in your
student’s account. If you would like to know what your student
purchased, this system can provide that information. Students may
also bring their own lunch. The lunch application for free or
reduced meals is available on the district website under “Students
& Parents.”Elementary – $2.20 Grades 5-12 – $2.50

HEALTH SERVICESA registered nurse or a licensed practical nurse
is assigned to each school building. Nurses identify and treat
medical issues and injuries, conduct health screenings, and support
students as they self-monitor and manage their conditions.
When should I keep my child home from school?Do not send a child
to school with a fever or obvious illness. Here are some general
guidelines to keep in mind.
• Conjunctivitis - Red, swollen eyes that itch and are draining
pus or have a crusty appearance. Keep home until student has been
on eye drops/antibiotics for 24 hours and cleared by a doctor.
• Coughing - Persistent, disruptive cough.• Diarrhea - Until
diarrhea has ceased for 24 hours without medication.
• Fever 100 degrees or higher - Until fever is below 100 degrees
for 24 hours without medication.
• Lice or Nits - Until treated and “nit free” (must be checked
by nurse before returning to classroom or bus).
• Rash - If rash is untreated or if student is too uncomfortable
even if treated.
• Strep Throat - Until student has been on antibiotics for 24
hours.
• Vomiting - Until vomiting has ceased for 24 hours without
medication.
Communicable/Contagious ConditionsIf your student is diagnosed
with a communicable disease, keep him/her home until the doctor
clears your child to return to school. Report all cases of
communicable diseases to the school clinic. This would include, but
is not limited to, any physician-diagnosed case of meningitis,
staph (MRSA, VRSA), pertussis, tuberculosis, mononucleosis, and
chicken pox. What happens if my child gets sick at school?Students
who become ill at school are sent to the nurse’s office. If the
student has a fever of 100 degrees or higher, vomits, or has
persistent diarrhea, the nurse or principal will contact the
parent/guardian to come to school to take the student home.
MEDICATION POLICYNo medication, including prescription and non
prescription will be administered in school without orders and
instructions signed by both physician and parent/
guardian. Forms for prescription and non-prescription medication
are available in the school office and on the District website by
clicking on “Health Services” under the “Departments &
Services.”All medication must be in original container and labeled
appropriately with student name, name and dose of medication, and
safe expiration date. Children will not be permitted to share
medication; each student must have their own labeled medication. If
your student has health concerns, has medication that must be
administered during school hours, or if you have questions, please
call your School Health Specialist in your school clinic.
INFINITE CAMPUSInfinite Campus is a secure online tool that BCSD
schools use to track and manage student information. The Infinite
Campus Parent Portal and Student Portal tools are easy-to-use
online resources for both
parents and students. Through the Portal, parents can access
their child’s attendance, grades, schedule, test scores,
assignments, report cards and transcripts. For the secondary
students, access to the Academic Planner helps students and parents
monitor progress toward graduation and explore different academic
pathways. It also serves as an excellent way to communicate with a
student’s teachers. Families can receive important school and
emergency-related information via phone call, text message and
email by updating their contact information in Infinite Campus. How
do I create a user account?Complete the request form at
http://tinyurl.com/icportalsupport You will receive a reply with
instructions for activation. This one-time code will allow access
to log in to the Parent Portal site. Once logged in, the website
will provide step-by-step instructions to guide parents through
setting up an account. Parents who need assistance with their
accounts should contact 216-898-8300 for help.
SCHOOL CLOSINGS AND DELAYSPeriodically, BCSD schools will close
or delay the start of a day due to inclement weather or other
unforeseen events. To receive school closing and delay
notifications, it is important for families to have correct contact
information in their students’ Infinite Campus accounts. This
will
allow the District’s automated messaging system to quickly reach
you, via phone, email and text, with school closing
information.Parents can check the District’s website
(berea.k12.oh.us) or follow the District on Twitter (@BereaCSD) and
Facebook (Facebook.com/BereaCSD) to receive instant weather
notifications. BCSD will also notify local TV and radio stations
with school closing information.New for 2018-19, the use of a
two-hour delayed school opening may be utilized when the additional
two (2) hours would allow for inclement weather to rise to an
acceptable level. With the option of the two-hour delay, we will
more likely be able to have school and avoid using as many calamity
days.A major part of a two-hour delay school opening involves the
transportation of students to schools. Under a two-hour delay
schedule, all schools will begin the day two (2) hours later than
the regular starting time. The school day will end at the usual
time. Students receiving school bus transportation should go to
their normal bus stop location two (2) hours later than their
regular pick-up time.As with school closings, the two-hour delay to
the start of the school day will be announced through the local
media and our telephone message system to parents. If for any
reason the two-hour delay is not sufficient to ensure safe travel,
the District will close for the entire day. If this is the case, a
second call will be made via our telephone messaging service.
TRANSPORTATIONStudents enrolled in the Berea City School
District are eligible for bus transportation according to the
following guidelines:Children living beyond the following walking
limits shall be entitled to bus transportation:
Kindergarten through grade 8 - 1 mileGrades 9 through 12 - 1 ½
mile
How do I find out my student’s bus route or if my student is
eligible for transportation?Call the Transportation Department at
216-898-8903. You can also lookup your student’s bus route or bus
eligibility on our website. Visit berea.k12.oh.us and click on
“Transportation” under “Departments & Services.”
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can I not see my child’s bus stop from the house?Students
may be assigned to a bus stop up to ½ mile from their home and we
encourage parents to accompany their child to the bus stop whenever
possible. This teaches the child safe habits of walking to and from
the bus stop and may give the parent peace of mind. Bus stop
locations are determined by each district’s board of education.
Are sidewalks required for my child to get to his/her bus
stop? No. Many students walk alongside of roadways to reach their
bus stop and in some instances no sidewalks exist.
Can my child wait inside of my house until the bus is at the
stop? No. Children must be waiting at the bus stop prior to its
arrival. Waiting at the bus stop before the bus arrives further
ensures that no one chases after the bus – this is a very dangerous
thing to do.
What time do I send my child out to the bus stop?Your child
should be OUTSIDE at the bus stop TEN (10) minutes prior to the
estimated arrival time. Be prepared and dressed appropriately for
weather conditions to allow for bus delays (i.e. traffic,
mechanical breakdowns, etc.)
What happens if you drop off my child at the assigned time and
place and I am not home? Our responsibility for the safety of your
child ends when we drop the child off at the designated stop. You
and your child should have an alternate plan in case this situation
arises.
What is the maximum time a student may ride his/her school bus?
There is no identified time that districts are obligated to meet.
It is up to each district to manage the length of time students
ride their bus. Ride times vary by traffic, locality and other
criteria; therefore each students ride times can be different.
Are there seatbelts on the bus?No. For maximum safety the bus is
compartmentalized. This means that the seats have high backs and
are spaced appropriately that each seat sections forms a
compartment, which keeps students safe.
