President's Message

Dr. Mukesh AmbaniPresident,Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University

Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU) has already established credentials throughout India for its academic excellence, quality research and industry interface. The University now aims to prepare its students to become true global students. We are now implementing a curriculum reform in the undergraduate and postgraduate programme in Petroleum Engineering, Liberal Studies and Nuclear Energy which would help the students to develop their skills outside the realm of the classroom. This would be done through a summer internship in one of our International partner schools.

The International Exposure Programme at PDPU makes an enlightening experience in which students will be able to hone skills by studying in a multicultural, international environment; with students from across the globe and some well renowned faculty. This wonderful opportunity would help students to become independent-thinkers and culturally aware indi-viduals who will be able to apply these skills to the dynamic sectors of Oil and Gas Sector, Nuclear Sector and various aspects of Liberal Studies.

This booklet is about the valuable experience gained by PDPU students through the International Exposure Programme which included Indus-trial Visits, Field Trips, Cultural Activities and International Conferences during their visit to the Universities. This publication provides a snapshot of their activities. It is also intended to highlight this aspect of university education to corporates, alumni, parents and prospective students alike.

Enhances Personal DevelopmentStudents who visit foreign universities or get an opportunity to pursue an internship in a foreign university, experience personal growth. It helps the students to increase their self confidence and serves as a catalyst for increased maturity while have a lasting impact on their world view. Pursuing an internship abroad enables students to forge enduring friendships with people from around the globe and enhances their socio-cultural skills. In addition to personal growth it also extends valuable academic benefits. The IEP programme can enhance the value of the student’s graduation goals by giving them access to courses and lectures inaccessible at their home institution. Studying abroad allows students to “study a subject with more depth and breadth”.

Become more Culturally AwareThe international exposure ignites passion for understanding other people and their perspectives. This is one important benefit of studying abroad and it is essential to succeed in our increasingly diverse world. Students with international exposure understand the value of dialogue between people with different points of view. Another benefit is the cultural awareness that the participants gain. Students develop a better understanding of their own cultural values and develop a more sophisticated way of looking at the world. In addition to experiencing the culture of another country the programme also provides ample opportunities to travel.

Get an Advantage in PlacementsInternational exposure is uniquely advantageous to the students’ future career. In potential recruits, employer places a great value on adaptability, flexibility and the ability to communicate well with people from different cultures. Employers’ most important selection criteria in recruiting new staff are interpersonal skills and they opine that these skills are likely to be strongest in individuals who have spent time abroad.

International Exposure also gives an edge to students applying for post-graduate studies. The internship programme gives students a chance to get involved in intellectual life and opportunities offered by a top rated research institution in India or abroad. The demand for international experience amongst employers and postgraduate schools is likely to continue. In the coming years, more students will opt for international educational opportunities as part of their preparation for careers in business as well as the public sector. Top corporate and government companies would want “high performers” who are equipped to think and work on a global platform.

Benefits of INTERNATIONAL EXPOSUREInternational Exposure is a highly rewarding experience. It is a life- changing experience for most students and has a profound effect on their views on the world and their own place within it. It takes students out of their comfort zone and continuously challenges them. As individuals, students will develop independence and self reliance. The experiences and skills that they develop abroad help them mature, both personally and academically and in turn improves their career prospects.

STUDENTS' SPEAK

The Exposure trip comprised meeting with Engineering Faculty, Engineering Seminars, Engineering Labs and Engineering Site visits, Cultural Workshops; Trip to Banff, Waskesiu and Toronto. The IEP'14 has helped me in developing my personality. We learned to respect the cultural values of one, the minor changes that come in everyday

life from one country to another. The program taught us to identify different areas of study and research. The program also gave ideas how engineering is approached in Canada. It also taught the importance of punctuality and discipline in life. This program helped me get acquainted faster with changing technology in the sector and it has built my confidence to work in a different culture and with people of different nationalities.IEP played an extremely crucial role in the overall development of my personality. It was a great experience and it improved my way of living and affected my personality to a great extent.

Manshil Sonagara

In general it was a really good experience and a rare opportunity one can get during this age. As the name suggests "Exposure program", it was a perfect program giving me a lot of exposure to new technologies

and new culture. It was a perfect blend of technical as well as cultural aspects in one's life. The visit to the university was the best part, as I got to know the education pattern and various methodologies of how students are educated back there in Canada. Also, visits to various industries exposed us to the latest technologies and manufacturing processes prevalent there. There was not a single problem in the facilities provided during the whole trip.

The program as a whole was a huge learning experience for me and all the participants. It made a lot of changes in my view towards my career and life as a whole. The whole experience was a once in a lifetime opportunity not only for me, but also for all the participants. Even today, after 5 months I am still reminded of those days and I still can visualize all those roads of Saskatoon and rooms of Mohyla Residence and I guess I will never be able to forget those moments.

Vidit Yogeshkumar Patel

First of all thanks a lot for giving me the opportunity for giving me a chance to visit The University of Saskatchewan as part of the International Exposure programme 2014. The exposure programme gave us really a nice idea about how university of different countries work and their culture differ from universities in India. The interaction with professor's and staff members give us brief knowledge about their research projects. Trip to places like banff, Wasksuie, Toronto etc was one of the biggest and best trips that I had gone through. IEP 2014 was really helpful to guide my career towards my goal in future.

Harsh Koradia

IEP 2014 was a perfect blend of technical and cultural exposure. I got the experience of what the student life was all about in Canada. Apart from that it was a privilege to visit and work in state of the art laboratories and interact

with professors, students, engineers for such an extended period of time.

However this trip was not all work. The best part were the weekends where we got the opportunity to visit the world famous hill station Banff, Waskesiu national park and the legendary Niagara Falls. We also got the opportunity to interact with students of many different countries. We played treasure hunt with students of Japan and Ukraine, we celebrated Canada Day with students from Brazil and had many such amazing opportunities to make many awesome international friends.

Ankit Prashnani

The IEP 2014 conducted by OIR-PDPU was a great success. IEP is a once in a life time experience. One can get to know different cultures, how they function and how they differ from our culture.During the programme one needs to

adopt new culture and has to acclimatize with it.You get an opportunity to learn from some of the best faculties in the world and can have hands on experience on some the most advanced testing machines in the laboratory. So overall IEP can be considered as the perfect blend of cultural and technical activities, a blend which is nourished with all the aspects which an engineer should feel. So without being skeptical one should definitely give it a shot.

FACULTY SPEAK

It has been a great experience and advantage to me joining and mentoring International Exposure Program (IEP) 2014 for the students of PDPU at University of Saskatchewan (U of S), Saskatoon, CANADA during 15th June to 15 July, 2014. The contents are extremely well structured to both theoretically and practically bringing students to a high level real world class field knowledge by very famous Professors within the specific field. During this program, students were given in-depth exposure to cultural differences and challenges facing international students in the cross-cultural environment. The multicultural group work has proved challenging at times and really made the participants realize where their strengths and weaknesses lie. On the weekends, there were a number of activities arranged, such as sightseeing trips to Saskatoon cities and the art galleries. Programs equip students not only with essential cultural and, in many cases, language skills, but also with a deeper awareness of and sensitivity to global issues shaping the diverse communities and regions they visit. Students explore the host country through hands-on experiences in local communities and through the lens of a specific theme. As a faculty member, I came across world-class research facilities at U of S and interacted few faculty members of my research area. Due to this program, the research collaboration between PDPU and U of S has initiated; and in the manufacturing field, it has materialized. The programme was fabulous in all aspects and also a wonderful experience. I highly recommend the IEP 2014 to U of S.

Jatin PatelAsst. Professor, Dept of Mechanical EngineeringSOT, PDPU

International Exposure Program, IEP 2014, was really remarkable; in terms of establishing research collaboration. This program has helped me to establish solid research linkage with Prof J A Szpunar, Canada Research Chair- in advanced materials for clean energy, University of Saskatchewan. Interaction with Prof Szpunar’s and his research team mainly Dr Ritwik Basu and Mr Joseph Omale, was very much fruitful. Additionally it was a really great experience of sharing ‘Welding Research at PDPU’ , an invited talk was delivered to Ph.D students and faculty members at UoS. Interaction with Prof . Akindele G. Odeshi, Associate Professor, Mechanical Engineering, UoS, and a visit to his research laboratories was excellent. Due to this joint collaboration developed under, IEP 2014, we are in a position to communicate one joint research paper between PDPU and UoS at Journal of Manufacturing Processes, Elsevier. Such international exposure opportunity may help the faculty member and PDPU to develop ‘research led university’.

Vishvesh J BadhekaAssistant professor, Dept of Mechanical EngineeringSOT, PDPU

For me International Exposure Program, IEP 2014, was really a great opportunity in terms of visiting a western university and establishing research collaboration. Through this

program, I was able to meet Dr Won Jae Chang, Dr Ian Fleming etc. and in a process to do joint research work. The laboratories we visited also gave me a great idea about conducting experiments, practical utility of those experiments for the local society and the world as a whole, and safety criteria followed to make the laboratories accident free. From students point of view it is a great experience being exposed to cultural differences and challenges faced by Indian students in the western university environment. The multicultural group, which was coordinating the program had really worked hard in creating the schedule and tasks which challenged the participants every time and made them realize where their strengths and weaknesses lie; and forced them to improve upon it. In the weekends, they managed to take the students to different places in and around Saskatoon and attend cultural programs, which is a beautiful way to unwind and learn about the local culture at the same time. This Program equips students with an ability to handle the existing cultural barrier and, quickly settle to the environment of a foreign university and country; and it will be a great help in their future endeavour.

STUDENTS' SPEAK

Staying in another country for one month, a country providing us with a cultural shock initially and making us forget about home eventually, one comes to realize and appreciate all the little and the few bigger lessons acquired. Academically, we acquired

critical thinking skills, it made us think and ponder over issues that we have observed in our lives, but never attempted to look closely.

Overall the program was a great success, and what we as students learnt in one month could not have been taught in an entire year of classroom education. "

Anokhi Gandhi

The exposure at University of Wollongong was a life experience which really made me understood the intricacies of academics, research and cultural facets at a global level. Thanks to PDPU and Uni. of Wollongong for organizing the program in a structured way which has

contribute to our learning in an immense way.

The host family concept of accommodation was also a worthy experience. IEP 2014 at University of Wollongong was a great learning experience. The specific sessions, the classroom interaction, exposure visits really helped shape our critical thinking and analytical approach of solving a problem.

Shrey Jain

International Exposure Program 2014 to University of Wollongong, Australia has been the best and the most memorable trip of my life with the two esteemed faculties Mrs. Niyati Shah and Dr. Ritu Sharma along with some college friends. The entire month was dedicated to gathering,

understanding, exchanging and exposing the culture of each other's country. Though 30 days sounded a big deal before reaching but were very less while getting to the end of the program. Thanks to SLS, PDPU for giving us such a great opportunity.

Riddhima Solanki

IEP experience is beyond what words can ever describe. It’s like that one month of June was paradise, it was a dream. Blink and those beautiful days are gone! The beginning of this one month journey was packed with apprehension and excitement. God knows how I felt then but With the touchdown of our flight in Sydney, I never would’ve imagined what these 30 days would mean to me. We were warmly received by our homestay families, mine was Patricia! She’s now my Australian Mom! Staying with the local families teaches you not only about their culture but certain aspects that you fail to learn in your environment. From having meals together (oh and we made Indian food for our families too) to sharing the experiences of the day to the predictable dialogues, we found our home overseas in Australia. Wollongong, with

mountains and numerous beaches (one for each suburb), to our surprise, turned out to be an extremely beautiful place. Aussies, stranger? So what. You can always greet one another. That’s what we learnt from them. Even strangers there would pass a smile or greet you with “how’s your day?” They were very warm, friendly and of course very approachable.

The university was magnificent. The campus was huge, lots of wildlife, ponds, greenery and at every corner of the university , there was a café! The stark contrast in our cultures was clearly visible there and believe you me, it was a good difference. Our teachers at the university were extremely interactive. There was never a wrong answer , there was never a silly answer and there was never a stupid question . We were never reprimanded. We would actually look forward to the classes! it really changed our perspective . Each session had something new to offer to us. English Academic writing focused on research proposals and with all the students being involved, we learnt how to brainstorm a word , literally a word and squeeze out numerous perspectives to it. Similarly, the sessions involved watching movies, YouTube clippings and other creative methods that broadened our thinking and changed our mindset. We began to think more openly, got out of our comfort zones and succeeded in achieving something that we never could’ve achieved by staying home and not taking up this beautiful journey.

Apart from this, in the evening , we , at times had the freedom to go around and explore the town. With transportation being so very convenient, I cannot think of even one day when we had any inconvenience with the transportation. On Thursdays, the university would arrange for us to visit the tourist places. To our joy, Sydney was just 90 minutes from Wollongong, we would go there usually on Saturdays .

There is so much to learn, not only academically but also for your own personal growth. I learnt to be independent, to manage my own expenses, to get out of my comfort zone, to interact with different people, to adjust with your group and so much more! The bond that we shared as a group of 14 , including the teachers – Ms. Niyati Shah and Dr. Ritu Sharma, is unmatched. Nothing can ever replace those moments. Kudos to the IEP team!

FACULTY SPEAK

It was a fantabulous experience I ever had what as a student I learnt from a trip to Israel(Entreprenuership Development) is trust in people by Government and companies which we should also inculcate in India. To encourage Entrepreneurship in India and I strongly feel that this program should be continued for further

batches. So, that out of them one big idea may come which can turn around the world.

Kavish Kejriwal

Fantastic!!!A must place to visit for Serious Entrepreneurs!! and urge PDPU to continue this program in years to come...so as to develop Enterpeneurship in University!!It was a memorable experience. Had a great opportunity to learn from Israelis on Entrepreneurship and Management. This will help

me in my academics as well as for personal growth.

G Sudarsan Sai"The program organized jointly by PDPU and I-Create will be beneficial to all students to have full exposure about Entrepreneurship in a country like Israel. Now all students are elevated with new thinking of creating jobs rather than finding them after study. As a Faculty member my experience was quite delightful compared to students. It has been a wonderful experience to see a country which has grown like a developed country without having any natural resources (coal, crude oil, natural gas etc.). The country like Israel has peaked its destination just by adopting the concept of Entrepreneurship, i.e. (The Start Up Nation). I was just amazed by seeing the tremendous growth of this country as well as very supportive nature of its citizens throughout the trip."

Mr. Himanshu ChokshiLecturer, Chemical Engineering

Well, I must say that the International Exposure was a life-changing experience, at least for me. It helped me introspect myself which I believe was very essential for me at this point of time, as it made me aware of my strengths which I never knew I had, and also gave me an insight of my weaknesses which I shall try to work upon and overcome. The lectures held at the Technion were extremely informative, while inspirational at the same time. We got to know how a small country with a population almost the same as that of our Ahmedabad, with hostilities on all sides of its borders, and with no proper/sufficient natural resources, managed to prosper so well and is now a developed country as against India still being a developing country, even though Israel got its independence one year later than India. Overall, the programme was once in a lifetime opportunity for me because I am not sure I would have ever thought of visiting Israel in the near future, because of the stereotypes I had about the country, which I fortunately got rid of now and I am extremely thankful to PDPU, iCreate, Technion, OIR, and each and every single person who was a part of the programme and who made it possible.

Devik Sodha

The International Exposure was a life changing experience for me, which not only helped me hone my Entrepreneurial Skills but also helped me develop a Global Mindset and made me overcome my stereotypes about Israel.

FACULTY SPEAK

This was my first foreign visit as a faculty member from Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University, but I would rather prefer to say as a student because of great learning experience I had there. I was really excited to visit the “Country of Dreams” and I must say that the whole experience was unforgettable.

We reached Texas A&M University on 20th June after a long haul journey from Ahmedabad. We were welcomed by Prof. Paul Nelson and Dr. Sunil Chirayath at College Station airport, the city where Texas A&M University is situated. This visit was actually planned to get PDPU students and faculty members involved in Nuclear Security Training Series. The duration of our stay was two weeks and during that we had been through many interesting lectures and table top exercises by the faculty of Department of Nuclear Engineering, Texas A&M University (TAMU). We have also visited various state-of-the art laboratories, AGN 5W nuclear reactor and a huge central library.

TAMU has a gigantic campus sprawled over 5500 acres of land, it is like a city inside a city. We took a campus tour and visited various departments, centers, baseball stadium and, many other establishments inside the beautiful campus. Apart from classroom lectures and discussions we interacted with local residents and knew about their customs, tradition and food. College station is not a very big city but it has everything a city must have and the most loving part is its peaceful and green ambiance. The stay was so comfortable and full of interesting learning activities that when two weeks passed I did not even realize it. Last but not the least I am very much thankful to PDPU who gave me this wonderful opportunity.

Vikram RathoreLecturerDepartment of Nuclear EnergyPDPU

The two weeks spent in TAMU was very enlightening to the students. The Two weeks consisted of lot of lectures on Nuclear Security. Apart from the lectures the students visited various facilities of TAMU. These include the visit to TAMU’s 5W AGN reactor, 1MW TRIGA reactor and Nuclear Fuel cycle laboratories. TAMU also sponsored a visit to NASA’s Johnson Space center at Houston, Texas during a weekend. That was so exciting to students and faculties. Students and faculties also got to know about US way of celebrating their Independence Day on July 4th. All of PDPU team visited the George Bush Memorial library and Museum on that day and enjoyed the celebration by watching the firework display.

Vaitheeswaran G

In July, I had attended the Summer Certificate in Nuclear Security Program. Sponsored by the US State Department's Partnership for Nuclear Security (PNS), the certificate program was an eight-week intensive course designed to produce nuclear professionals who will lead efforts to reduce the security risks associated with nuclear and radiological materials, while ensuring the peaceful use of nuclear energy is available to all.I have earned academic credits by completing three university courses taught by NSSPI faculty. The program also included tours of nuclear and

radiological facilities, executive seminars, and security-focused simulations. The course was intended to raise the awareness of nuclear security as a key requirement for all nuclear and radiological systems and instill a culture of nuclear security in nuclear professionals working in industry, research facilities, government, or academia.Following the program at Texas A&M University, I traveled to the Institute for Nuclear Materials Management (INMM) 2014 Annual Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia from July 20 to July 25, 2014. At the INMM meeting, I built relationships with international nuclear security experts and shared best practices for promoting nuclear security culture and the safe and secure management of nuclear materials. As a result of the program, I gained a strong appreciation of the need for a robust nuclear security culture and a desire to implement lessons learned at PDPU and India. I am highly grateful to PDPU for providing me such a valuable opportunity.

I use to be there at the University at 9 in morning and work in the lab till 4, during which I o had meetings with my Professor, studying,, analyzing etc. Some days it use to be very easy to go ahead in my research and sometimes were times when I used to work for hours but remained stuck at some point, trying s to figure out what next. This thing made me realize that Research demands a lot of patience. My stay there of 2 months became more interesting as slowly I became aware of Winnipeg city. Which made it easy to manage going out and exploring the culture of the city. I tried to make the best out of my stay by visiting cultural, recreational, construction and architectural places at Winnipeg The detailing in their infrastructure for disabled people and the peoples spirit of living in multicultural society touched me. The library of UoM was an awesome place; It was fascinating to find the journals, conference proceedings from 1980’s and a huge collection of Books. After the experience I feel independent and grown up by years in understanding life

About AIESECAIESEC is the global youth network impacting the world through leadership development experiences. AIESEC has been facilitating youth leadership activities as well as international internships & volunteer experiences for over 65 years, developing a global learning environment across 124 countries & territories.

INTERNATIONAL EXPOSURE PROGRAMME 2014 | 9190

AIESEC – Outbound

AIESEC is being promoted by the University to facilitate global student leadership experiences in PDPU students. AIESEC , PDPU last year had sent 22 students in 13 different countries for one month duration and this year 30 students from various schools of the University have undergone 2 month AIESEC Internship experiences in Mauritius, Egypt, Russia, China, Malaysia.Hence a De-briefing session was organized wherein students shared their experiences and learning from global internship experience.

AIESEC – Inbound

PDPU has been promoting student leadership by promoting AIESEC activities at campus. Through AIESEC last year PDPU hosted 120 international interns belonging to 30 different countries and in 2014 PDPU is playing host to 30 interns of AIESEC Ahmedabad from all around the world - Egypt, China, Taiwan, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Indonesia, Costa Rica, and Portugal for one month duration and these interns will be providing community service to various NGOs like Blind Peoples Association, Manavsadhna, Shashikunj to name a few. They will also be visiting various municipality schools in and around Gandhinagar and will be teaching subjects like mathematics and English.

STUDENTS' SPEAK

I would recommend this internship to everyone. It is always good to get out of your comfort zone and interact with people and open up. And going international can help you the best if you want

to get it out of you to do so. It can help you in wonderful ways to overcome your fears. And if the internship is meeting your preferences then it is just like a cherry on the cake. It will only increase your knowledge, add more flavour to your CV/Resume. The internship will not only help you explore new places, people and traditions, it gives you a chance to explore and discover the talents within you. Even if someone is not sure about their future, the internship will certainly teach them some basic life skills that everyone should know to have a successful life. This is the best way to learn and get experience. And everyone who goes on an internship learns something. The internship is worth experiencing. It is all about taking the opportunities life gives you.

Anaya Vithalkar

I wouldn’t stop anyone from trying something new. It’s good to try something new on for size. It is always good to get out of your comfort zone and interact with people and open up. Now, if the internship is meeting your preferences then I suggest there is no harm in taking. It will only increase your knowledge, add more

flavour to your CV/Resume, because you get a certificate from that university describing the work you have carried out and the outcome. For instance, if anyone interested in environment and environment protection, Green Power Now is the best option. If you take the opportunity you will get to know about the country, their culture, traditions, their lifestyles, you can explore new places, etc. I believe this is why AIESEC offers such opportunities for the youth. Even if you are struggling in thinking about your future plans, then also you should take an AIESEC internship because you never know you may find your interest out there and dedicate your life towards it. This internship has made me more focused and dedicated in pursuing my goals. It was a great experience and I encourage others to do the same. Take this opportunity that AIESEC gives and go for an internship because its the experience that matters. You will realize your potential and abilities when you are on your own and you will come out of your comfort zone and eventually will open up. You will feel more confident and will get to know some basic values of life. You will get a chance to interact with people from different countries, you gain knowledge, you share knowledge and ideas, you represent your culture and know about others’ cultures, etc. This is the best way to learn and get experience.

Yash Patel

Travel. Learn. Discover.

The three words mention above are the mantra for growth and development of the youth. It is only once we step out of our comfort zone, walk into an unknown zone and have to face the trouble without a cushion to fall back on, do we ensure that our fall isn’t too hard.Travelling to a new country, living with a group of people from various different countries, without any known people around for 6 weeks is a form of empowerment. Personality development, responsibility, maturity and overall growth and development of an individual happens subconsciously. For 6 weeks, one becomes the brand ambassador of his/her country and that is a lot of responsibility to shoulder. To add to that, one is working in a corporate/community development environment, so leadership is something that doesn’t remain a choice anymore. It is the actions that we take, the tasks that we achieve and the lives we impact that mould us into who we are than what we learn from textbooks and in our own comfort zones. Now, the reader must argue that travelling to a new city within the National boundaries, where one has no friends or relatives is also stepping out of one’s comfort zone. Not really. Travelling to a new country means going to a place where you don’t spend in their local currency (which teaches us the value for money), you don’t speak their local languages or eat their locally available food. One has to make adjustments and improvise based on the situations and conditions there, without the help of mom and dad. That’s where the real challenge lies. That’s when we start growing up.

Hence, AIESEC is an experience of a lifetime.

Vianca Damani

I chose international internship because local internship won’t allow me to be independent; in AIESEC we used to work with other interns from counties (50 interns from 9 different countries in my project).I think international exposure is a must nowadays, getting to know the global problems going on rather focusing on our own country. And learning different ideologies, methods of improving social, economic causes etc. which could help my country or my locality or even my college.I would recommend this to all who want to know about different cultures, get to know about global world and problems going on, and also to those who haven’t been in such an internship which can change them from what they are now and help them in different fields of competencies. Such an internship will always benefit you in future, because you will learn so many new things apart from your internship as well. Most importantly it’s not only about studies of subjects but it’s more of a practical task with different learning.

I wish to go on an AIESEC internship again.Thank you AIESEC.
