Rising Above the Gathering Storm(National Academies of Engineering)
“Education in science, mathematics, and technology has become a focus of intense concern within the business and academic communities. The domestic and world economies depend more and more on science and engineering. But our primary and secondary schools do not seem able to produce enough students with the interest, motivation, knowledge, and skills they will need to compete and prosper in such a world.”
Why are we interested?
Question: Do you LOVE math and science?

IEEE-USA Precollege Education Committee Help improve the quality of precollege education
and to raise the level of functional and technological literacy of United States students by placing emphasis on mathematics and science.
Keep alive the innate curiosity of young children about science as they move into middle school and high school, so that they will continue to study mathematics, science, and technology.
Engineering is more than “You have to love math and science” – curiosity, innovation, creativity, etc.

Teacher in Service Program http://tryengineering.org Global initiative, implemented at the local level Initial training at the Region level
(Region 4: Summer ’06) Designed to flow to Sections, then to individuals
Example: Central Indiana Section activities
Global programs, local implementation
Teacher in Service Program Linked to national standards .pdf with materials, learning goals, age,
learner outcomes… Materials for a classroom of 30 < $100
(usually less than $30!)
Design and Build a Better Candy Bag Materials: scale: plastic, string, tape, rulers,
scissors, paper, pencils… candy Why? Teamwork; problem solving; calculations of
area, volume, weight; art… Basic procedure:
Given a set of materials, student teams design a bag to hold the most volume or weight before failure.
Failure analysis Don’t like candy? Brownsburg Challenger Center
does “Design a Moonrock Bag”
Rotational Equilibrium: A Question of Balance
Demonstrate the concept of rotational equilibrium, by building and testing a Mobile
