IEEE PES Award for Excellence in Power Distribution Engineering
Distribution represents a major utility investment for the transpor-tation of electrical power. It is critical to the quality, reliability and economy of the product. This award was established to recognize those individuals who have contributed to the growth and value of the technology.
Since many people have contributed to the advancement of distri-bution technology, this award is not named honoring one individu-al. It is awarded annually by the IEEE PES to recognize the indi-vidual who has made a remarkable engineering contribution to the field of distribution technology. The selection committee considers all candidates brought to its attention whose work will result in sub-stantial improvements to the effectiveness and utilization of power distribution.
The award is funded by long-term grant commitments received from the Asplundh Co., Chance Co., Commonwealth Edison Co., Georgia Power Co., Kearney-National Inc., Pacific Gas & Electric Co., PECO Energy Co., and the S&C Electric Co.
The award consists of a plaque, an honorarium of $1,000 USD and a travel subsidy to attend the PES Awards Ceremony.

JOHN MCDANIEL has been with National Grid since 2006 in their Electric Operations Engineering Department where he is a Lead Senior Engineer. He is the Tech-nical Lead for New York’s Central Division group, with duties includ-ing: short term planning, reliability improvements, operations support and connection of large customers.
Previous to that, John was with Detroit Edison in their Distribution Planning Department and with Commonwealth Edison, holding various positions in distri-bution engineering, reliability and operations. At Commonwealth Edison, he was the companies lightning expert.
John was chair of the Lightning Performance of Overhead Lines WG. In the position, he led two revisions of IEEE Std. 1410 (2004 and 2010), Improving the Lightning Performance of Electric Power Overhead Distribution Lines. He was chair from 2001 to 2012. As chair of the WG, he was also a corresponding member of CIGRE WG C4.4 (Lightning) and CIRED Joint WG C4.4.05 (Protection of MV and LV networks against lightning).
He is currently the Vice Chair of the T&D Committee, Chair of the Distribution Subcommittee and the Vice Chair of the Distri-bution Reliability WG. He has held leadership position within the Distribution SC since 2001. As the Vice Chair of the Distribution Reliability WG, he recently led the successful revision of IEEE Std. 1336-2012, Guide for Electric Power Distribution Reliability Indices.
John graduated from Michigan Technological University with a B.S.E.E. and M.S.E.E. in Electrical Engineering, majoring in pow-er systems.

IEEE PES Cyril Veinott Electromechanical Energy Conversion Award
This award recognizes outstanding contributions in the field of elec-tromechanical energy conversion. Research and developments on electric motors continued throughout the 20th century and into the 21st to the point that such devices have now become an integral part of our lives. The current ubiquitous presence of the electric motor in everything we do has resulted from the work of dedicated engineers throughout the world. The award is named for the man responsible for numerous practical improvements in the design and application of electric motors over 50 years. Dr. Cyril Veinott made seminal contributions to the devel-opment of polyphase induction motors, 400 Hz aircraft motors, and was a pioneer in the application of digital computers to the design of electric motors. He was responsible for the early measurements and mitigation of electric motor noise. He helped write many IEEE and NEMA standards for electric motors. He was the first person to be inducted into the Hall of Fame created by the Small Motor Manu-facturers Association in 1985. The Cyril Veinott Electromechanical Energy Conversion Award consists of a plaque and an honorarium of $5,000 USD.

CLYDE V. MAUGHAN has had a 63-
year career in turbine-generators. He
worked 36 years with GE in the are-
as of generator design, development,
manufacturing and service. He man-
aged the project to develop the Mi-
capal II stator insulation system, and
contributed to the development of
several present GE design features,
e.g., the Tetraloc end winding sup-
port system, the end winding grading
system, stator slot wedging system. He retired from GE in 1986. He
has since worked 27 years as a consultant on several hundred genera-
tor service problems. His focus has primarily been on the difficult
area of failure root cause investigation of the complex turbine-
generator. He has also provided extensive support in the area of
training younger engineers.
For 15 years he has focused on documenting for the next generations
of generator service personnel the knowledge of his generation of
generator engineers. He has authored 24 technical papers on a broad
range of generator design and service issues. He authored a 210-page,
250 photo CD text on generator maintenance. He presented a 2-1/2
day seminar 30 times to about 1000 maintenance personnel from
utilities and OEMs in the United States, Korea, Australia, South Afri-
ca and Israel.
Mr. Maughan has observed and participated in the huge evolution of
the power-generation industry – the magnificent technological ad-
vancements, the struggles resulting from taking cost out of the gener-
ator, and the sometimes controversial business commercial changes.
He graduated from the University of Idaho in 1950, BS and Union
College, 1967, MS.

The IEEE PES Douglas M. Staszesky
Distribution Automation Award was
established to recognize individuals who
have made a significant contribution to
ensure the practical realization of distri-
bution system automation.
This award is named in honor of Douglas
M. Staszesky who worked with enor-
mous energy and passion to bring new
technologies and concepts to the field of
distribution automation and to promote the value of investments in
such systems to electric utility decision makers. The Douglas M.
Staszesky Distribution Automation Award recognizes individuals
who displayed that same energy and passion and who have demon-
strated success in the implementation of systems that provide real
benefits for electric utilities and their customers.
The funds for this award are provided by S&C Electric Company.
The award is administrated by the IEEE Power & Energy Society.
The recipient receives a plaque and a travel stipend of up to $1,500
USD, and will designate an engineering school to receive a $2,000
USD scholarship.

NOKHUM S. MARKUSHEVICH
has more than 50 years of experience
in power system operations. He
worked for the Latvian Power System
for 29 years, where he developed
methods and devices for normal and
emergency operations and where he
started his work on distribution auto-
mation. He also was an Associate
Professor in the Institute of Advanced
Education.
He has lived in the U.S. since 1990 and has provided consulting
services on Distribution Automation, Smart Grid, and Energy
Management to utilities in North America and South East Asia. In
his projects and publications, he specified and supported the imple-
mentation of advanced distribution automation applications with a
number of innovative functions, such as the integration of Volt/
Var Optimization with transmission operations, Demand Re-
sponse, and Advanced Metering Infrastructure.
Currently, he is an active member of the Transmission, Distribu-
tion, and distributed Energy Resources Domain Expert Working
Groups of the Smart Grid Interoperability Panel. He is also a lead-
er of the writing group in the IEEE 1547.8 Working Group on
Voltage Regulation, as well as a contributing member of the Volt/
Var Control Task Force.
He was a Vice President of Utility Consulting International for 18
years. He is President and Principal Consultant of Smart Grid Op-
eration Consulting (California). He has authored and co-authored
several books and more than 100 papers and inventions on power
system operations, Smart Grid, EMS, and DMS. He is a recipient
of the Appreciation Award for Smart Grid Interoperability Panel.

The IEEE PES Meritorious Service Award is given to PES Member who has made outstanding contributions in leadership, technical activities, and educational activities of the IEEE Power & Energy Society. The selection of the awardee is based on outstanding and meritori-ous service to the IEEE Power & Energy Society. The IEEE PES Meritorious Service Award consists of a plaque and travel subsidy of up to $1,000 USD for recipient to attend presenta-tion ceremony.
WANDA K. REDER is Vice President - Power Systems Solutions at S&C Electric Company responsible for studies, engineer-ing, procurement, project management, construction and field service. In addition, Wanda has held leadership positions at US-based utilities responsible for standards, engineering, system planning, and unregu-lated business start-ups. She pioneered one of the industry’s first large-scale load management programs that advanced what now underlies Smart Grid investments. In addition, she developed one of the first comprehensive Asset Management organi-zations, reducing system outage frequency and cost per customer while bringing customer satisfaction to an all-time high.
Wanda is an IEEE Fellow, was the 2008–2009 IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) President and is currently the Division VII Director-Elect. Wanda has served on the PES Governing Board since 2002 providing leadership to reposition the Society to be relevant during significant industry change, increase the pipeline of power engineering students and foster increased collaboration across IEEE. Some of her accomplishments include:
Launching the IEEE PES Scholarship Plus Initiative
Rebranding the Society to encapsulate emerging themes
Spearheading the IEEE Smart Grid effort

Power electronics and other static control-lers are making a major impact on future power systems through application in transmission, distribution, and small gen-eration. Applications in transmission and distribution include HVDC, FACTS and Custom Power. Since the introduction of the Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) concept, the technology has been moving ahead at an increasing pace. Very significant near to long term benefits of FACTS technology are now recognized

EDSON H. WATANABE re-ceived his Electronic Engineering degree, in 1975, and his Master of Science degree in Electrical Engi-neering, in 1976, both from the Federal University of Rio de Janei-ro. As a son of Japanese immi-grants he decided to pursue the Doctor of Engineering degree at the Tokyo Institute of Technolo-gy, Japan. For this he received financial support from the Japa-nese Ministry of Education. In 1981 he received a Doctor of Engi-neering (D. Eng.) degree at this Institute.
Since that year he is with the Institute Alberto Luiz oimbra for Graduated Studies and Research in Engineering – COPPE at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro where he started as an Associ-ated Professor and is now a Professor. His main fields of interests are Power Electronics converters applied to Power Systems, includ-ing analyses, modeling and design of converters; instantaneous power theory and power conditioning, as well as FACTS technolo-gy and HVDC systems.
Dr. Watanabe is a member of the Institute of Electrical Engineers, Japan - IEEJ, the Brazilian Society for Automatic Control, Brazilian Power Electronics Society, CIGRE and the Industry Application, Power Electronics and Power Engineering Societies of IEEE. In 2005, he was admitted to the National Order of Scientific Merit, by a Brazilian presidential decree. He is one of the co-authors of the book “Instantaneous Power Theory and Applications to Power Conditioning”, IEEE / Wiley, which was also published in Chi-nese.

This award recognizes excellence in classroom teaching, course
development and the promotion of student, local, transnational and
technical activities.
To be eligible for this award, an individual must provide classroom
instruction in electrical engineering at a college or university with an
accredited electrical engineering program or equivalent, be a mem-
ber of PES for at least one year, and be nominated by any PES
member and endorsed by the chapter or technical committee of
which the individual is a member.
The award consists of a plaque and honorarium of $1,000 USD.

For leadership and innovation in the delivery of sustainable energy education
SAIFUR RAHMAN is the founding director of the Advanced Research Institute (www.ari.vt.edu) at Virginia Tech where he is the Joseph R. Lor-ing professor of electrical and com-puter engineering. He also directs the Center for Energy and the Global Environment (www.ceage.vt.edu). He is a Fellow of the IEEE and an IEEE Millennium Medal winner. He is the founding editor-in-chief of the IEEE Electrifications Magazine. He was the founding editor-in-chief of the IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy. He is a vice president of the IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES) and a member-at-large of the IEEE-USA Energy Policy Committee. Currently he is serving as the chair of the US Naitonal Science Foundation Advisory Committee for International Science and Engineering. He is a Distinguished Lecturer for the IEEE PES, and has lectured on smart grid, energy efficient lighting solutions, renewable energy, demand response, distributed generation and critical infrastruc-ture protection topics in over 30 countries on all six continents.
He received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Virginia Tech in 1978. His industry and government experience includes work with the Tokyo Electric Power Company in Japan, the Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York, Progress Energy, and consultancy for the World Bank, the United Nations, US Agency for the International Development and the Asian Devel-opment Bank.

This award recognizes outstanding contributions in the leadership of technical society activities including local and/or transnational PES and other technical societies, leadership in community and humanitarian activities, and evidence of technical competence through significant engineering achievements.
To be eligible for the Outstanding Young Engineer Award, an indi-vidual must be thirty-five years of age or under on January 1 of the year the award is presented, be a member of PES for at least one year, and have a minimum of a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from an accredited electrical engineering program or equivalent. He r she can be nominated by any PES member and must endorsed by the chapter or technical committee of which the individual is a mem-ber.
The recipient receives a plaque and will designate a college or uni-versity with an accredited program in electrical engineering or equivalent to receive a $2,000USD scholarship for an electrical engineering undergraduate.

GABRIELA HUG-GLANZMANN is an Assistant Professor with the Depart-ment of Electrical and Computer Engi-neering and the Department of Engi-neering and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University. She received her M.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering and her PhD degree in Power Systems Engineering from the Swiss Federal In-stitute of Technology (ETH) Zurich in 2004 and 2008, respectively. She also received a diploma in higher education teaching from the same institution in 2007. From 2008 – 2009, she was with the Special Studies Group of Hydro One, Toronto, Canada. She joined Carnegie Mellon University in July 2009.
Her research focuses on optimization and control in electric power systems, the integration of intermittent renewable generation and storage devices, power flow control and the application of predictive control and decomposition theory in the electric power system. Dr. Hug has led and participated in over $6.5M in research funding from industry, utilities and government, with 35 published or accepted journal and conference publications.
She is the Co-Director of the Electric Energy Systems Group at Car-negie Mellon University and the WIE Chair of the IEEE Pittsburgh Section. Dr. Hug is the recipient of the ETH medal and the ETG Innovation Award for her M.Sc. thesis and the ABB research award for her PhD thesis. Most recently, she received the NSF CAREER award.
She is married and has a 1.5 year old and a 3.5 year old son.

This award was created is in honor of Roy
Billinton, Professor Emeritus at University
of Saskatchewan, Canada. Dr. Billinton is
an IEEE Life Fellow, Foreign Associate of
U.S. National Academy of Engineering,
Fellow of Royal Society of Canada, and
Fellow of Canadian Academy of Engineer-
ing. He has published over 850 papers and
8 books, has given tutorials, presentations
and seminars in over thirty countries, deliv-
ered over one hundred short courses on
system reliability, and served on IEEE PES committees and other
industry committees. He supervised more than 120 Ph.D. and Master
Degree candidates who are spread throughout the United States, Can-
ada and other countries.
Areas covered by the award includes modeling, analysis and data de-
velopment to quantify power system reliability, and, assessments to
plan and operate reliable electric utility generation, transmission, distri-
bution systems or interconnected power system grids.
The award is funded by the past students and other associates of Pro-
fessor Roy Billinton and selected organizations. Management of the
funds was approved by the IEEE Foundation.
The recipient of the Roy Billinton Power System Reliability Award
receives a plaque and an honorarium of US $3,000 USD.
RONALD N. ALLAN is Emeritus Profes-sor of Electrical Energy Systems at the Uni-versity of Manchester (formerly UMIST) in the United Kingdom. He was Head of the Electrical Energy and Power Systems Group and also Head of the Department of Electri-cal and Electronic Engineering. His primary interests for nearly 40 years has centred on the development and application of probabilistic methods to the planning, design and operation of power systems, including reliability and eco-nomic assessment of power generation, transmission and distribution. He has been involved in the development of concepts, methodolo-gies, models and evaluation techniques in this area, including both analytical and simulation-based approaches. His research has also been concerned with evaluating the economic impact of system inter-ruptions on customers; a concept now known as customer interrup-tion costs and worth of supply. He has lectured on these subjects at universities and industry in many countries around the world and was a visiting professor to KTH in Stockholm from 1996 to 2002. He is the author and co-author of over 240 technical papers, co-author of three reliability textbooks, and co-editor of an IEEE Press Book. As a result of his research, he was award-ed the DSc in 1987, the IEE Institution Premium in 1996 and the PMAPS International Society Award in 2000. He is a Life Fellow of the IEEE, and a Fellow of the IET and of the UK Safety and Reliability Society.

The IEEE PES Leadership in Power Award was established in 2007
to recognize industry leaders for exceptional contributions to the pro-
motion of the electric power engineering profession. The award is
particularly intended to highlight actions which have encouraged the
development and growth of electric power engineering practitioners
and the recognition of the contributions electric power engineers have
made to society. In this era, electric utility leaders who recognize the
crucial importance of power engineering in the safe, reliable and eco-
nomical generation, transmission and distribution of electricity are rare
and this award is to recognize them for their insight and wisdom.
To be eligible, recipients must be active in the electric power industry
but do not need to be IEEE members. Selection is based on evalu-
ation of accomplishments as revealed by documented testimonials
from industry members. Of particular importance is evidence of the
candidate’s promotion of the importance of the power engineering
profession and the people practicing it. Work in encouraging industry
involvement with university power engineering programs, encouraging
young engineers through mentoring and career development pro-
grams, recognition programs for power engineers, encouragement of
professional activities by practitioners, etc. are also considered.
The recipient receives a sculpture, certificate, $2,000 honorarium and a travel
stipend of up to $2,000.
MICHAEL HEYECK retired June 2013 as Senior Vice President - Trans-mission for American Electric Power. He was responsible for AEP’s 11-state transmission system, including Officer and Board positions for several AEP affiliates. He also held leadership posi-tions in AEP's Corporate Planning and Budgeting Department. He joined AEP in June 1976.
Heyeck founded The Grid Group, LLC in 2013 to provide strategic services for executives in the electric utili-ty industry, tapping his 37 years of service to the industry.
Heyeck served the industry in numerous capacities, including the US DOE Electricity Advisory Committee, President of the CIGRE US National Committee, Chairman of the EPRI Power Delivery & Utili-zation Council, and Board Member for Reliability First Corporation, a regional entity of NERC.
Heyeck earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Electrical Engi-neering at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He earned a Mas-ter’s in Business Administration at the University of Dayton. He also is a graduate of The Executive Program at the University of Virginia’s Darden School. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Ohio, and a Senior Member of IEEE.
Heyeck holds elected office in Ohio as Westerville City Council Mem-ber since 1993, and served as Chairman (2001-2003, 2009-2013) and Mayor (2003-2005). He also served in several community board ca-pacities. He and his wife Fernanda have three adult children and re-side in Westerville, Ohio.

This award, established in 2011, recognizes
outstanding contributions in the field of devel-
oping, utilizing and integrating renewable en-
ergy resources, particularly those that have
minimal carbon footprints, in the national and
global energy scenarios. Feeding the electrical
energy generated from innovative conversion
technologies into conventional utility grids and
operating the combined system satisfactorily,
plus the effective use of locally available re-
newable energy resources in remote and rural
areas to improve the human living environment are major components
in this mix. The need to stimulate and encourage activity towards these
goals is the primary objective of this award.
Prize: Plaque, formal certificate, honorarium of $1,000
Funding: The award is funded through a quasi-endowment fund estab-
lished through the IEEE Foundation and provided by an External
Source/Donor. A corpus of U.S. $50,000 has been endowed by the
Ramakumar family.
Eligibility: Nominees must be members of IEEE and PES with clearly
identifiable and valuable contributions in the field of renewable energy.
VLADIMIRO MIRANDA has a BSc (1977) and a PhD degree in Electrical Engineering (1982) from the University of Porto, Portugal. He is with its Faculty of Engineering since 1980, presently as Full Professor. He is also currently Direc-tor at INESC Porto, the leading institu-tion of INESC TEC – INESC Technolo-gy and Science, an advanced research network in Portugal, and was President of INESC Macau (China, 1996-1997). He is now President of INESC P&D Brasil (Brazil, 2012-).
He has been responsible for many research projects at international level, in Europe, United States and Brazil, most of them linked with renewable energy source integration.
Prof. Miranda acted as institution evaluator for the Ministry of Sci-ence for the Government of Argentina, and is a regular project evalu-ator for government organizations in many countries such as Portu-gal, Norway, Croatia, South Africa, Argentina and Chile.
He also acted as consultant for power companies and manufacturers in Portugal and for the Innovation Agency of the Portuguese govern-ment, promoting joint projects with China.
He has been involved for years in the INESC TEC process of launching spin-off companies and has served in their Administration Boards, including a company in the energy efficiency business.
Prof. Miranda has authored or co-authored over 200 publications, with most of his papers in IEEE Transactions. He is recognized at world level as an expert in Computational Intelligence in Power Sys-tems and was thus elevated to the degree of Fellow of the IEEE.

He has led or participated in numerous IEEE standards, publications, keynotes and panels. Dr. Novosel served as chair of the PES Technical Council and a member of the PES Governing Board. He holds PhD and MSc degrees in electrical engineering from Mississippi State University
and the University of Zagreb, Croatia, respectively. Stan H. Horowitz retired from American Electric Power Service Corp in 1989, having served as head of the System Protection Section, Assistant Head of the Electrical Engineer-ing Division and Consulting Electrical Engineer. He is an IEEE Life Fellow, served as chairman of the IEEE PES Power System Relaying Committee, was a member of the PES Execu-tive Board and member of the PES Fellows Committee. He

Javier Amantegui received his Ph.D. degree from the Uni-versity of the Basque Country University in Bilbao. He joined Iberdrola in 1979 and worked in the areas of hardware maintenance, protection and Power Quality. He manages the Protection and Substation Standardization Department in Iberdrola Distribucion, Spain. Their main areas of interest include the advanced application of Protection within the Smart Grid, standardization of equipment and Substation
Asset Management. He has been involved in CIRED and CIGRE activities since 1988. He has been the chairman of CIGRE SC B5 “Protection and Auto-mation” between 2008 and 2012. He is an honorary member of CIGRE.
Dan Karlsson is a principal engineer at Gothia Power, and provides world wide consultancy services within the electric power area. He received his Ph. D in Electrical Engineering from Chalmers University in Sweden 1992. His work has been in the protection and power system analysis area and the re-search has been on voltage stability and collapse phenomena with emphasis on the influence of loads, on-load tap-changers and generator reactive power limitations. His work has com-prised theoretical investigations at academic level, as well as
extensive field measurements in power systems. Dr. Karlsson is a member of Cigré and a senior member of IEEE.
Shinichi Imai was born in Osaka Japan, on January 11, 1964. He joined Tokyo Electric Power Company after he earned MS degree from the Osaka University in 1989. His current position is vice president of THE power grid solution inc., joint venture between Hitachi and Tepco established April 2013. His special fields of interest include power system protection, SIPS design & operation, T&D asset management, IEC61850 system inte-gration, and smart grid. He is member of IEEE. He has been
involved in IEEE activities such as IEEE PSDP and PSRC since 2004. He is registered Professional Engineer of State of California.
Alex Apostolov received MSc in Electrical Engineering, MSc in Applied Mathematics and Ph.D. from the Technical Uni-versity in Sofia, Bulgaria. He has more than 35 year experience in power systems protection, automation, control and commu-nications. He is Principal Engineer for OMICRON electron-ics. He is IEEE Fellow, IEEE Distinguished Lecturer and Member of the Power Systems Relaying Committee. He is past Chairman of the Relay Communications Subcommittee,

Heide Caswell is Director-Transmission and Distribution Asset Performance at PacifiCorp, in Portland, Oregon and has participated in the Dis-tribution Reliability Working Group for 10 years. She has been actively involved with several working groups and task forces in Transmission and Distribution Committee of PES, including contributing to papers, guides and standards and coordinating the annual IEEE DRWG reliability
benchmark study. She is also a member of the North American Electric Relia-bility Corporations Performance Analysis Subcommittee, which is responsible for developing reliability metrics and reliability context for the bulk power system across North America. She is a licensed professional engineer in the state of Washington.
Vincent J. Forte, Jr. recently retired as a Principal Engineer in Utility of the Future, Advanced Engineer-ing from National Grid. Mr. Forte is a licensed profes-sional engineer in New York State. Mr. Forte has also co-authored papers and articles on customer valuation of interruptions, RF signal transmission over power distribution systems, methods of targeting mitigation for efficient reliability improvement, Distribution Auto-mation, and Smart Grid. He is a senior member of IEEE, and a member of NSPE and HKN. John C. Fraser, P.Eng., IEEE Member since 1972, retired in 2010 from Nova Scotia Power Inc. He gradu-ated from Acadia University and the Technical Universi-ty of Nova Scotia. He is also a 1982 graduate of the Westinghouse Advanced Systems Technology School, Pittsburgh. His career at NS Power, 36 years, encom-passed Transmission System Planning, Strategic Plan-ning and Distribution Engineering. John was on a team that implemented a combined Outage Management and Geographic Information system. John’s accomplish-
ments include the development of an Economic Analysis Model and the devel-opment of a Severe Weather Impact Model, one of the first such models for an electric power utility in North America.
Anil Pahwa received B.E. from BITS, Pilani (India) in 1975, M.S. from University of Maine in 1979, and Ph.D. from Texas A&M University in 1983; all in electrical engineering. Since 1983 he has worked at Kansas State University, where presently he is Logan-Fetterhoof Chair Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engi-neering Department. He is chair of Power and Energy Education Committee, vice chair of Power System Plan-ning and Implementation Committee, and an Editor of
Transactions on Power Systems. He was elected Fellow of IEEE in 2003 and he received the IEEE PES Douglas M. Staszesky Distribution Automation Award in 2012.
Tom Short works in EPRI’s power delivery group and lives near Saratoga, NY. Mr. Short has a Master’s of Science degree n Electrical Engineering from Montana State University in 1990. Mr. Short is the former chair of the IEEE working group on the Lightning Performance of Distribution Lines and led the development of IEEE Std. 1410-1997. Mr. Short authored the Electric Power Distribution Handbook by CRC Press. Tom leads EPRI’s work on distribution fault location, efficiency,
and arc flash.
Mark A. Thatcher obtained his BSEE from University of Missouri – Kansas City in 1982, and his MSEE from Kansas State University in 1998, and has been a licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Missouri since 1987. He was involved in the recent IEEE Standard 1366 regarding Distribution Reliability Statistics and was employed by Kansas City Power & Light, in Kansas City, Missouri for 31 years, serving at times as a System Protection Engineer and as a Senior Reliability Engineer.
Mark is currently employed at Finley Engineering Company in Lamar, Mis-souri.
Val G. Werner (S’88-M’90-SM’12) received his B.Sc. (1990) in Electrical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, WI. He has been employed by Eaton Corporation in Milwaukee. He works for We Energies as a Principal Engineer in the Distribution Protection and Reliability Group. His main area of expertise is distribution reliability collection and analy-sis. He has been an active member of the IEEE Work-ing Group on Distribution Reliability and is currently
the Secretary. He is Co-Chair of the Task Force on Reliability Reporting which produced P1782 “Draft Guide for Collecting, Categorizing and Utiliza-tion of Information Related to Electric Power Distribution Interruption Events”. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Wisconsin.

The Delhi Chapter is recognized as winner of the 2012 Outstanding
Large Chapter Award for its outstanding performance under the lead-
ership of Chapter Chair Mini S. Thomas and the Chapter Executive
Committee.
The Chapter Executive Committee of this joint PES/IAS chapter is
well organized and completed more than 40 wide ranging activities
throughout 2012. The ExComm developed an aggressive plan for the
year. Through the hard work and dedication of this group of volun-
teers, they provided significant value to the PES and IAS members,
students and others in the Delhi power community.
Some significant 2012 highlights include:
- 11 Technical Meetings covering a wide range of topics. Several meet-
ings had over 100 attendees
- 5 Educational Programs and tutorials that supported both PES and
IAS interests
- Public Affairs activities including a career counseling workshop
- Wide ranging support for Student related activities including leader-
ship training and numerous technical tours of power facilities
- Membership Advancement efforts were undertaken throughout the
year, and one member was elevated to Fellow
- Total membership changes have been minimal, however there are
several defined efforts to expand membership. Significant focus was
directed at Student PES membership
- Chapter sponsorship of 2 conferences that attracted large participa-
tion form both industry and academia
- A comprehensive web site that keeps members up to date on chapter
and other related activities

The Kerala Chapter is recognized as winner of the 2012 Outstanding Small Chapter Award for its outstanding performance under the leader-ship of Chapter Chair Muhammed Kasim S. and the Chapter Executive Committee. The Kerala PES Chapter was very active during 2012 with a number of technical, educational, societal, membership advancement and develop-ment programs. These activities paved the way to involve individuals from academia and industries to provide value to both members and non members in the Kerala power community. Chapter membership was an area of focus increased again this year. The Chair and the Exec-utive Committee provide excellent leadership for the chapter and for the benefit of its members and others. Some examples of 2012 activities include: - 4 Technical programs including presentations and seminars on vari-ous topics - 2 tutorials and a seminar including topics to provide value to both students and industry - Wide ranging activities focused on Students. Student support and involvement in a number of the chapter’s activities were seen through-out the year, with high student participation in meetings and events - A public Affairs program focusing on reducing energy usage and bills in homes - Membership recognition was achieved by utilizing the Outstanding Chapter Engineer Award and several other means throughout the year - A focus on membership growth and advancement which has resulted in continuous increases in both for several years. This year the chapter saw a membership increase of 19%. The chapter provided multiple programs on the value of IEEE membership - Chapter involvement with the INDICON 2012, IEEE India Council International Conference held at Rajagiri School of Engineering & Technology, Kochi - A chapter web site highlighting upcoming activities and other infor-mation for members All these activities are especially impressive given the small size of the chapter - about 50 members!
